Thread · Transcending regret and the do-over koan · 2 of 4 tweets

I wrote a long-form post on Transcending Regret, Problems, and Mistakes, exploring this ~koan: > "If you had a chance for a do-over, would you choose for everything to go exactly the same? > If not, you have not yet surrendered." malcolmocean.com/2017/11/transc…

Shoutout to @Meaningness, whose writing on the fluid mode was part of what helped me figure some of this stuff out. I think that my post itself is also a contribution to the ongoing quest to articulate meta-systematicity.

@vgr & @sarahdoingthing, I recently wrote a couple of longform (~4k word) posts for my own blog. Are these the sort of thing you would like me to pitch to ribbonfarm in future? malcolmocean.com/2017/11/self-r… malcolmocean.com/2017/11/transc…

@Connoropolous Yup. My main technique for avoiding this is to give myself 5 minutes to think of a thing and after that I just have to do my top thing. Sometimes thinking done with eyes closed, sometimes in writing (see malcolmocean.com/2017/11/captai…)

Joke: universal basic income. Woke: universal basic quests.

@meaningness I feel like I've heard (maybe from you!) of a group of people who held a stance that each word does/should have a precise meaning, with no nebulosity. Seems adjacent to (but distinct from) logical positivism. Any ideas?

@Malcolm_Ocean The logical positivists did think more or less that (with some nuance and internal diversity of views)

@Meaningness I appreciate the quick reply! It's in my blog post now: malcolmocean.com/2017/12/unders… (with a link to your page on nebulosity)

@Meaningness @juliagalef Since reading your post awhile ago, "Dr Bronner's Monist Soap" is just what this product is called in my head now. No regrets.

@KevinSimler & @UseIntent: can you make my day not start at midnight? I think this is an important part of user experience: fitting with my actual daily rhythms, not just timestamps. (On @CompliceGoals, I give users a "day start time" setting)

"The Drop" is the moment of comprehension as a physically (i.e. rhythmically) illegible musical segment suddenly becomes legible.

@simpolism Hey @fortelabs this is sort of an answer to your question:

Presenting...the 20 Commandments of Building a Second Brain. Designed for alumni to remind them of key principles, but I'm curious whether newbies get anything out of it dropbox.com/s/uuszpbccvsgn…

@fortelabs This is good. I'm still hiatus'd half-way through the course, so maybe it answers this, but the short bursts + feedback one is opaque to me. How do I get feedback on a few hours of writing disorganized words towards a blog post? (The prospect is very appetizing!)

@fortelabs Maybe this is what tweetstorms are for? But I suspect there's more to it than that.

@Malcolm_Ocean You create milestones, convergence points at points that are legible enough to get feedback. Like releasing software with enough changes to gather user feedback, but not so much the signal gets lost

@fortelabs Ahh, okay. I think I may have interpreted "short bursts" too narrowly, ie as if referring to a single work session. I gather it's fractal, and a short burst could also be a few days of writing or something? But I still seem to be slightly confused.

Is there any way to “go offline” for the holidays while keeping phone to communicate with loved ones? I have all app notifications turned off but don’t want texts and other messaging apps about work coming through

@fortelabs Semi-extreme options: - get special chat app for select few loved ones; uninstall the other apps for the holidays - buy a new SIM with new #; turn off data and only give new # to loved ones for sms

I'm sad there aren't more precise controls for stuff like this. My phone is on airplane mode 30-60% of the time, and on silent 99% of the time. I'd like to be able to do things like "stay offline except to [send this email] / [download this ebook]"

@davidschneider Yep! That's when the journalists looks back to the camera with a smirk. The whole thing is farcical to the end

@sunny_hundal @davidschneider This smirk makes sense in the context of the people who will actually be watching this journalist. But it misses the gravity of how many people *do* just accept all of these claims at face value, which is part of how we ended up in this mess. See theatlantic.com/magazine/archi…

@sunny_hundal @davidschneider I would be curious to hear what those people would say if they watched this clip though. Would they claim the clip was fabricated? Within 5-10 years, that'll probably be easy to do. Would they suffer sudden amnesia? Would they say "this is just one thing, it doesn't matter?"

great graphic illustration of exactly how vague vague-verbiage forecasting is. But it under-states the problem: watch out for those fat-tailed phrases

@PTetlock I'd like to see this next to a calibration chart... so it would also indicate for instance that people say "99% sure" when they mean "80-95%", and similar things!

Are (most all?) people "experts in their own lives" at getting their System 1 needs met, and only appear irrational or crazy from the outside when the observer's own craziness is of sufficiently different flavor? Or am I just rationalizing?

@garybasin Perceptual Control Theory strongly supports a view similar to this. Each person's control hierarchy has various reference levels (some of which are ~hardcoded, eg temp, hunger, meaning) & at any moment either the reference levels are ✓ or their ctrl hierarchy is reorganizing

@garybasin I suspect this is often a very fruitful perspective to take. Q: What are some examples of System 1 (or 2) needs? (I’m familiar with the S1/S2 dichotomy, just not in the needs department.)

@KevinSimler @garybasin Probably a better mapping is "unconscious"/"conscious" instead of S1/S2. So an unconscious need is something that your system will in fact act to ensure it gets, whereas a conscious need is something that your conscious mind thinks it needs (which you might not actually seek!)

@vgr @Meaningness @TaylorPearsonMe @mistermircea @KevinSimler Hmm ya. We are trying to reason about ecologies, after all. I do still find it curious that sometimes data immediately leads to behavior change and other times it takes repeated exposure. Habit as attractors -- glider guns in CA - of varying stability?

@garybasin @vgr @Meaningness @TaylorPearsonMe @mistermircea @KevinSimler I think that understanding the role of internal conflict is really important here. Reading about Perceptual Control Theory helped me a ton with this. I highly recommend checking out this book amazon.com/Making-Sense-B… or B:CP if you wanna get technical: amazon.com/Behavior-Perce…
