@visakanv as usual i’ll chip in with: trauma has a lot to do with it. simple ex. is people who got bullied for being honest about what they liked growing up and now feel unsafe talking about it trauma means people living in different worlds, made of the worst parts of their childhoods

@QiaochuYuan @visakanv My latest frame for this: everyone is basically living in a dream mashup of their current external situation and their old emotional meanings. Like dreaming you're at school but it's also on a boat somehow. & as in dreams, somehow the weirdness of this mashup goes unnoticed

Reminder to tomorrow-Visa to make a thread about how this video changed my life (approach to mistakes and failure, and the expectations and feelings around them)

quoting @visakanv: this is true regardless of how you choose to define success; whether we're talking abt climbing the corporate ladder or being an artist. I'm reminded of Vic Wooten talking about how he deliberately practices wrong notes (worth watching even if non-musical) https://t.co/5cywxUyepm

@visakanv Herbie Hancock describing a similar realization he had early on playing with Miles Davis, and "right in the middle of Miles Davis' solo, I played the wrong chord. Sounded like a big mistake! ...and Miles paused for a second... then he played some notes that made my chord right."

What phrase signals that the person using it doesn't understand your field? Example: "Computer error."

@paulg I'm gonna say people who talk about "human error" mostly don't understand human factors / design. See eg this thread talking about a naval disaster that was blamed on the operators but was obviously downstream of poor design once investigated.

ProPublica @propublica ·

In the early hours of Aug. 21, 2017, the USS John S. McCain took an unexpected left turn & collided with a tanker. 10 sailors lost their lives. In an internal investigation, the navy blamed the destroyer’s crew. But that’s not the whole story. Not even close. (THREAD)

Why’s it always seem like the people that get burnt out are sitting in an office working maybe 5 actual hours, and the people that are on their feet doing real work 8+ hours a day never do?

@BecomingCritter Burnout is largely about a sense of work being impossible/intractable and of unclear value ...which is less common with physical work since feedback loops are clearer and it's generally better defined and more obviously useful. Stressors there are simpler (tho not per se better)

quoting @ESYudkowsky: Apples and potatoes are basically the same plant, we've just bred apples to be sweeter. So why is one a fruit and the other a vegetable?

@ESYudkowsky when I re-read it & imagined that the first part was suggesting they were literally the same plant in the same way cauliflower, broccoli, kale and brussel sprouts ARE in fact... then I found it quite funny, because then the joke is that the fruit is a fruit because it's the fruit

Consider the failure modes - someone is enjoying a cigarette or a bad movie and joking about how terrible it is, while their internal consensus + extrapolated trajectory is; they’re gonna smoke and watch trash till they die. The optimal interaction strategy depends on your goal

@visakanv This related early @existentialcoms strip produced a profound insight for me related to internal conflict. Not sure I can articulate that insight—it was more embodied than conceptual. My tip is to seek a way to transcend the argument in this comic: existentialcomics.com/comic/13
