Naming what GPT does: from 'genshit' to confabulation

playing around with GPT is making me think maybe we need a new term for the sounds-good-but-isn't-coherent stuff it says it's not quite "bullshit", since bullshit is a bit more motivated & distracting from what's relevant "babble" is kind of it but it's too senseful for that…

"-shit" might be the right suffix tho machineshit aishit neuroshit senseshit langshit genshit I feel like "genshit" is it.

let's see if it catches on. maybe I'll get famous for coining this word #neologizing

"genshit" = the kind of almost-coherent stuff GPT comes up with when it doesn't quite know what's going on not all generated text is genshit! if it's: - factually answering a question - accurately summarizing something - reasoning appropriately that's something else twitter.com/Malcolm_Ocean/…

ahh genefluff is also good

@Malcolm_Ocean I think fluff or genefluff is a good term. It’s not malicious like bullshit, just low actual signal. It’s probably a really key concept and it would be good to optimize for the opposite. Hallucination is also very useful term I wish there was shorter word for

I seriously dunno how tf I didn't think of this myself but this is what it gave:

@Malcolm_Ocean Ask it to generate possible terms

Aha! Thanks @RichDecibels & @jillnephew what GPT is doing is ✨ confabulation ✨ not a coincidence: both the AI & the left hemisphere of a split brain patient are disconnected from reality, so so is what they say, no matter how articulate!

Reading this post by @JanelleCShane and I'm like "oh man, our current ai bots are basically left hemispheres". > "When confused, it tends not to admit it" aiweirdness.com/post/175110257…
