How information flows. Your choices to tweet & retweet things are part of the collective human conversation that is making sense of what we collectively know & don't know.

An amazing *randomized trial* on Twitter+academia: 112 papers were randomly chosen to be shared on twitter by a group with ~58k followers or to not be shared. Papers that were tweeted accumulated 4x more citations compared to non-tweeted papers over 1yr. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32504611/

Leverage Point #6 - who has access to what information academic paywalls are part of it but in order to access something you also need to know that it exists and how to find it in the first place!

Leverage Point 6: structure of information flows (who does & does not have access to information) usually the leverage point here is in restoring the flow of information that has been blocked to avoid accountability eg companies may pollute less if required to publish emissions

Consider that if this applies to scientific papers it might also apply to the rest of memeplexes developing. Your tweets & retweets have a tiny but nonlinear impact on others' thinking, around the world.

@QiaochuYuan @Malcolm_Ocean @yoshikischmitz @joyurge We should all act as if each of our actions could potentially have such crazy outsized impact on others, and yet simultaneously not take ourselves too seriously (Visabrain: that is how we win) STOP IT

You'll never know the impact of all of your actions. Sorry utilitarians. Things are way too intertwingled, and counterfactuals are inaccessible: can't rerun universe But you can consider what sorts of things your actions might be causing to evolve.

With everything you do, ask yourself: What am I feeding? What am I incentivising? What am I adding energy to by paying attention to it? It's not always obvious. It requires learning to ignore what you don't want & exalt what you do want. twitter.com/visakanv/statu…

Memes are ultimately a long game, and involve both persistence & creativity on the part of the meme-spreaders, as well as quality of the underlying source. If underlying quality is high enough that many people become superspreaders (eg roam) then 🚀📈

This wasn't sponsored or anything It's just rare that I have a "magic moment" with a new product these days, especially with software Happy to promote the #RoamCult

Another example is Iain McGilchrist's work on 🧠, which now over a dozen people have engaged with due to my persistently talking about the value I get from it. And that's still growing!

@liminal_warmth This was basically me in 2019 but for brain hemispheres, and I think I've done a decent job of that! Mostly by tweeting excitedly and relating it to other things. Will take another few years to really percolate, but gradually more & more people are reading McGilchrist now!
