Value collapse from goal tracking, and framing goals without metrics

"value collapse" is something I've noticed somewhat with myself and others, using the @CompliceGoals app to track their goals ...the system works a bit too well! if you don't put in a social goal, you can find yourself neglecting your social life, etc

Next Monday, I'm giving the Royal Institute of Philosophy Cardiff Annual Lecture, via Youtube livestream. It's about "Value Collapse" - exploring the possibility that making our values highly explicit and clear can deaden them. cardiff.ac.uk/community/even…

ultimately this is a pretty cool thing, and Complice is good at keeping your goals fluid and evolving

1c. Know what you want Goals evolve over time; the point isn't to figure it out all in advance, but to have a decent waypoint to navigate towards. x.com/Malcolm_Ocean/…

like insofar as metrics cause goodharting and narrow-mindedness, Complice is pretty good on that front

Abstract: Something seems to go wrong when we take on, as our goals in life, some extremely explicit metric. As individuals, the metric might be making a lot of money, or getting the best grades, or getting into the top-ranked law school.

here's our concept of goal. no metric required!

Goal = recognizable desired state in the future, that causes you to act differently in the present so as to realize it. If... 🛣️ no recognizable state = "trajectory" 😣 not desired = "should" 👀 not future = "regret" ☁️ no action = "dream" 🤠 actions just for show = "signalling"

Complice invites you to frame goals in ways that evoke a feeling that you can cultivate more of by orienting towards the goal

Realization: the way I relate to my goals on complice.co is… kinda like ritual magic. Basically by naming & enumerating the main careabouts I'm moving towards, I create affordances for invoking them as sources of motivation & clarity. 🧙‍♂️✨ Thread on naming goals 🧵

and the misc or overall sections of the weekly review can be used to balance things out eg I don't have a health/fitness goal or a money goal right now, but I have a couple of questions related to that that I check in on weekly

as with systems-vs-goals, it seems like there's a similar thing here, where clarifying goals/values is useful but can have drawbacks, and there's ways to mitigate those

The term "pre-success failure" from @ScottAdamsSays' book is a gem. His related idea that you should have systems and not have goals is absurd. (have both!) Scott cites Olympic athletes as examples. 🤨 Take 3 guesses what goal an Olympic athlete has... 🥇🥈🥉

I think it's possible to be living a life that's very vividly moving towards what you want, while having those wants be very open-ended but it might be easier for some people to go from daydreamer to hitting explicit goals (eg @bmndr) than straight to pursuing nebulous desires

for those who haven't explored the Complice approach yet, check it out here and let me know what you think and how it might be able to thread this needle even better! complice.co
