@jambarree @reasonisfun @meekaale @metaLulie @xuenay @m_ashcroft @ryansarahk @meaningfulideas @astupple it's based on Perceptual Control Theory: "behavior is the control of perception" as one of the book titles puts it coercion is an attempt to control someone *else's* behavior by holding one of their perceptions hostage to get them to *do* or *not do* something

@jambarree @reasonisfun @meekaale @metaLulie @xuenay @m_ashcroft @ryansarahk @meaningfulideas @astupple this situation that shows up with infants & young children, where you could use overwhelming force without hurting them or needing a threat of further violence (ie any behavior they might attempt to make is totally welcome) is an edge case that's ~impossible among adult humans

@jambarree @reasonisfun @meekaale @metaLulie @xuenay @m_ashcroft @ryansarahk @meaningfulideas @astupple I'm not saying it wouldn't potentially also cause tangles for the kid but if I had to pick a parent from: A holds me down to change my diaper but is totally welcoming of all of my feelings & behaviors B tries to get me to do things via causing problems if I don't …A every time

@jambarree @reasonisfun @meekaale @metaLulie @xuenay @m_ashcroft @ryansarahk @meaningfulideas @astupple I also want to acknowledge that I'm not a parent or kid-carer and so I am in some sense profoundly unqualified to have this conversation 😂 ...which doesn't mean I shouldn't try to have it! but it seems important to express a lot of humility here

@jambarree @reasonisfun @meekaale @metaLulie @xuenay @m_ashcroft @ryansarahk @meaningfulideas @astupple also also the reason I'm kinda argumentative here is because I don't feel like my point has been understood, not because I'm certain it's right I'm trying to point at a precise *something* and I feel like other people haven't seen it (even if they would disagree about it)
