How a leader's blindspots become the group's blindspots

to the extent you have social power, your inner Tyler Durden shares that power that is to say, your unconscious aims will naturally use your social power to achieve their various ends

mental blindspots, by their nature, purposefully hide themselves from your view, & they like to hide themselves from others' views as well thus, by Tyler Durden power, the leader's blindspots become the group's blindspots even if consciously the leader doesn't want this!

this is kind of what the Guru Papers is about—how even very well-intentioned leaders end up finding attractors towards having their blindspots magnified

I don't have a clear solution to this! I remember realizing unnervingly that this collective blindspot phenomenon that has frustrated me multiple times would, by default, happen to anything I might lead as well.

I do have some parts of an approach though, some of which are contained in this thread (and in general my entire NNTD framework is about this puzzle)

And yet... blindspot feedback is hard. It usually creates tangles for one or both parties involved, and little net benefit. A thread of some of my realizations about this over the last year. twitter.com/atlaz_chugged/…

oh and I suppose this happens with families, too! (obvious once I considered it) parents' blindspots become the children's, and so on (tho only sometimes; sometimes it oscillates by generation)

@astupple @jambarree @reasonisfun @meekaale @metaLulie @xuenay @m_ashcroft @ryansarahk @meaningfulideas obviously emotional mirroring & resonating isn't enough, you also need to actually be able to find pragmatic solutions (ideally win-wins) to whatever conflicts have arisen but in the meantime, it makes a huge difference whether you can remain expansive & meta-okay with someone

Nothing quite like that moment as a CEO when you realize your own personality flaws have become the company culture and you are effectively personally at fault for the struggles the company may have

oh man I have no idea how I didn't link this earlier part of what's crazy about this is that your subconscious/unconscious aims are willing to make certain kinds of move that you aren't. so it can outmanouver you

Your subconscious drives are reorganizing your mind to try new strategies til one works, and since they aren't conscious, they aren't constrained by: • what you think is okay • your own… belief… that you're not allowed to fuck around and find out?!? 🤯
