@jessicamalonso nah the audio spike is the only thing you can easily find later because you can't look over all of video all at once anyway, this approach makes sense for podcasts where you want it to be cleanly edited, but for more casual stuff it would be nice to just rough-cut it with 1click

@jongold that's still the difference between HAVING TO EDIT IT LATER AT ALL vs NOT so now there's new waiting steps in the middle: - whatever it is has to get uploaded to whereever - then you maybe have to wait for it to export after you've removed the clip

any workflows that involve an experience of waiting (eg for something to load) feel fundamentally different than ones that don't

fun fact: the Law of the Excluded Middle (for any proposition p, either p is true or not-p is true) only holds when you know exactly what you're talking about which is true in logic & mathematics, and sometimes in other narrow or well-specified domains but not by default!

@meekaale @metaLulie @xuenay @m_ashcroft @jambarree @ryansarahk @meaningfulideas @astupple hot take: if you're holding him down but not trying to get him to *behave* in any particular way, it's not coercion (it might still cause tangles, and in the context of adults it's violent because violent escalation is implied, but it's not *coercion*)

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@meekaale @metaLulie @xuenay @m_ashcroft @jambarree @ryansarahk @meaningfulideas @astupple actually no, in the case of adults, the implied escalation to violence if someone resists does function as coercion more clearly: just shooting someone & taking their money is not coercion, it's murder & theft; "your money or your life" is coercion ("do as I say or else!")

something many people probably don't know is that I've been oriented to "shifting from a coercive mindset to a collaborative one" since 2012 I say this in part because there's a lil cred 😛 but mostly to point at how long the journey can be! this is FAR from an overnight project

I think that the fact that there are now dozens-to-hundreds of us talking about noncoercion here in public is an asset and a liability it was WEIRD in 2012—almost nobody understood. very cool to have it kinda normalized on the flipside though, normalization creates pressure

part of the puzzle with the whole thing is that "don't coerce" is either self-evident & unnecessary, or a paradox/koan either you already aren't coercing 🙃 or you are, and the only way to follow the instruction is to try to coerce yourself into not coercing, which won't work 🤦‍♀️

Accepting that something is a problem does not require accepting any proposed solutions. 99% of described problems are real and important, at least in some sense. 99% of proposed solutions are at best irrelevant and at worst actively would exacerbate things.

3 likes 0 RTs

I guess this is somewhat of an overstatement one of the main issues with proposed solutions is not per se that they'd make things directly worse (although that is a thing!) but that they'd cause problems for someone else who would then set about to reversing the "solution"

Thread · Untangling aversion to marketing and two kinds of fakeness

further progress on this emotional coherence work today, trying to untangle my concepts of what "marketing" is/means I'm enjoying tweeting about my process here in public so I'm going to do that here too! some cool insights + a new model of "fake" in this thread

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

"It's so important to me to not be trying to get people to buy my stuff, since it's bad to market your own stuff. It's fake—cheating. So I can't really do any marketing at all. I don't even want to! I just want to wait & get lucky, even if that means not making much money rn."

6 likes 0 RTs

at some point last week, maybe while writing this thread 👇 I noticed some aversion to some sort of marketingy activity and got a lot of delight from just revisiting my index card and going "wait, why am I marketing? I don't want to" and welcoming that

as I felt into that in today's Coherence Coaching session w @AskYatharth, I noticed a feeling of relief associated with consciously not marketing I think it was partially intrinsic to honoring my resistance, & also partially about these other schemas:

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

reasons (learned via coherence work today) why my system prefers feeling powerless in relation to figuring out good marketing for complice.co:  💪 "I don't want to be controlling people"  🤑 "then I'd have to decide how wealthy I want to be"  💁‍♀️ more demand on my time

2 likes 0 RTs

then I noticed something like "if I do marketing, people will SEE ME as fake, they'll judge me, they won't trust my motives" which is a judgment I've definitely had about people! (though not always—some marketing feels good. so that's interesting!)

3 likes 0 RTs

I realized there are two kinds of fakeness when it comes to marketing: overt aggressive salesy marketing nervous-hiding-creepy marketing

3 likes 0 RTs

I'm not worried about doing the overt aggressive salesy marketing. I know I hate those godawful landing pages that try to frame it as if only an idiot or person who hated themselves wouldn't immediately buy the product. I'm not gonna do that.

2 likes 0 RTs

But, maybe because I wasn't always so confident I wouldn't do that, I've learned an opposite pattern! (which is also fake!)

Just tried riffing off this and it was glorious Amazing how much I can get out of me if I just give parts of myself a different colour pen and let them group-chat it out. Who needs more rest? Who needs more support from whom? Who can take the lead? Who needs a voice?

such prompts could be good for getting unstuck or just increasing the sense of engagement like sometimes you bounce away from a chat but you come back when the person replies. this could do that if you leave for a minute without ending the session! I think that'd be v powerful

@jambarree @reasonisfun @meekaale @metaLulie @xuenay @m_ashcroft @ryansarahk @meaningfulideas @astupple it's based on Perceptual Control Theory: "behavior is the control of perception" as one of the book titles puts it coercion is an attempt to control someone *else's* behavior by holding one of their perceptions hostage to get them to *do* or *not do* something

One thought that came to mind today is something like, the government has things it's supposed to care for that it can make some headway on using powers it has, but it doesn't have the wisdom nor legitimacy to use those powers properly. This is a pickle.

5 likes 0 RTs

There are sorta two layers here: A) the nature of the protest being made B) the demands the protesters are making If the protest were very violent and the demands were something 99% of people disagreed with, the govt would have a clear mandate to do whatever it could to stop it.

4 likes 0 RTs

Instead, the protest is obnoxious & costly and the demands are something that maybe ~70% of cdns disagree with. Hm. Part of the issue here is... how does the government go about knowing that it's right about what policies are correct? How do those 70%? We've all been wrong.

@natural_hazard @Malcolm_Ocean ... at which point, the concept of one person steering another does not even apply. But one person steering another is usually the point of punishment, and it doesn't work well, and often backfires.

@FluidityAudio @natural_hazard totally I think we also don't acknowledge the extent to which punishment in a context like [harsh words between spouses] isn't directly intended to change behavior but is trying to say "hey! Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@cosimia_ > difference between negative and positive motivation? Have thought lots about this. Seems there is, both inherently to any feedback system and specifics to human psychology implementation. It's adaptive for fear to overpower desire: those who don't flee don't survive.

been thinking about this more, in conjunction with @visakanv's "focus your time and energy on what you want to see more of" which i increasingly believe is the most important talking point on twitter atm gonna thread several thoughts working towards a rough model of depression

quoting @QiaochuYuan: when people say they don't want to be inundated with "negativity" what they mean is that they don't want to feel powerless. it's confusing terminology tho because in this sense the opposite of "negativity" is not "positivity," it's action

@selentelechia @DiamonDie @BasedBeff I normally assume that when someone has done mdma (I haven't) that they will most likely be v empathetic too

@orpheaskk @selentelechia @DiamonDie @BasedBeff someone studied mdma + iterated prisoner's dilemma and the people on mdma were just as capable of punishing defectors but better able to forgive after breaches pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30455187/

oooh I had this with my Dream Mashups post! if I'd written it up when I first came up with the dream mashups analogy, it would have reified a bunch of subtle confusions I had at the time (before I understood non-naive trust-dancing) instead it reveals and untangles those

Creative procrastination is when you feel deep internal urgency to do a thing, but manage to delay and delay because your approach doesn’t feel right. When you finally find the right approach, the first reaction is utter relief that you didn’t succumb to earlier sense of urgency.

@magghu interdependent origination; much like abundance, scarcity doesnt seem as much a mindset as it does the result of complex factors such as SES. not to mention scarcity is by structural design of the economy (housing, food, healthcare not guaranteed, even though they could be)

@alex_here_now @magghu have you checked out Land Value Tax? it (+UBI) seems like one of the best ideas I've seen for actually sorting out material scarcity astralcodexten.substack.com/p/your-book-re…

@Malcolm_Ocean @daemonhugger yea already leaning this way. "can't be bothered" has been intensifying lol

@harveykrishna_ @daemonhugger and you can get certification at specific techniques if you want to make sure that you have those capabilities I'm in a process for that right now with Coherence Coaching

@QiaochuYuan @Malcolm_Ocean on consent vs “consent” (something like participation), would be useful to think about wrt NNTD

@AskYatharth @QiaochuYuan yeah I love that thread feels like it's already how I'm thinking about things in general, not sure what more there is to say except with reference to some specific situation under consideration sufficiently good trust-dancing solves the consent problem

@norabean @lexfridman (hey Nora, it's been awhile!) that's not the differences in perspective I'm talking about 😝 I'm talking about people's frames on why this is happening in the first place, what it means, who's responsible for what, and what it would take for a resolution to occur.

huh this was actually cool, I was able to see some of the subtler differences between English & Australian accents (I'm aware there's tons of regional variation too, but still) youtube.com/shorts/51cDyE_…

@temujin9 Holy crap I was totally unprepared for this comparison and it floored me - had to go and check with a calculator to make sure 🤯

@danieljthomason @temujin9 me too, yeah! if anyone's curious... it's about 2.5B math:   525,600 minutes/year (thanks RENT) ~= 31M seconds/year ~= 2.5B seconds/80years

continuing to work on this and I now feel like I've got basically all of the pieces there but it's repetitive and out of order (and has at least 6 appendixes 😅) so now I'm like fuq, gotta refactor & reorganize the whole thing I feel a bit like @visakanv with his book

I am writing a beautiful piece called "How we get there" after my friend pointed out that a vision doc of mine he'd read was uhhh lacking a plan. It needs some examples though; it's currently hilariously abstract. Maybe I'll read it through with someone and articulate some live.

I'm about 15k words in, for reference. this writing piece just pulls words out of me. it's v exciting. even what I've written feels in many places like a very high-level summary of something I can see in much greater detail, like a map with only the major roads or something.

@Malcolm_Ocean I recommend switching things up and making a video where you talk about what you’ve written, I wish I did that more in hindsight

@visakanv I went and made a diagram of the whole thing and that helped a bunch I've done a decent amount of talking about the subject of what I'm writing, and to some degree talking with colleagues and saying "this is something I'm touching on in HWGT" did some roam outlining too

as I get back into wearing underwear I'm having trouble finding what I want most guy's underwear is either  • loose but made of linen etc  • or stretchy but tight & form-fitting (sexy & good for running, but day-to-day my parts need more freedom) I want loose AND stretchy!

finally finished v1 of this—20k words (7k is appendixes) by far the longest thing I've written. I could imagine it becoming a book, tbh slowly sharing it with people close to me, maybe will share more broadly eventually
