Noticing conversational bandwidth without dismissing perspectives

I talk to lots of smart & self-aware people. Sometimes I talk to some who reflect that they don't get to talk to such people often. Sometimes I'm like "really?" I just checked out some rooms on Clubhouse and jfc there are a lot of people not on this level.

Annoying nudge from @vgr to use my own self-awareness on this situation 😝 A steelman of what I'm saying here is something like, it's not just that the content is boring to me, but I feel like I can tell the bandwidth of what's being said is really low.

@Malcolm_Ocean Umm... this seems rather self-congratulatory. Nice that you've got your thing going but I'm not sure you can conclude other people don't have their own things going that you can't see or appreciate.

Maybe my assessment of that is off! It's certainly possible to be off about such things. But it's interesting to have these perceptions and acknowledge that I'm having them.

I've also been very much moving in a direction over the last year of "everybody's perspective has something meaningful to it" So it was interesting to notice myself having some thought that has nearly the opposite valence.

There's definitely a naive postmodern-ish version of "everybody's perspective has something meaningful to it" that misses the bandwidth thing & related things. Similar error to refusing to not just have taste in art but be willing to say "this is world-class art; that is not"

Ah also this.

I have something to learn from everyone. But that doesn't mean that a given situation is going to afford that learning.

Also there's a capacity to notice that other people aren't really learning either. I *did* refine that skill somewhat in the course of my schooling, watching the teacher fail to understand a student's question, and the student acquiesce to a bad answer.

One of the most important things to be able to notice is when a situation isn't a fit for your learning process right now. Of course, school all but beats that out of people. twitter.com/Malcolm_Ocean/…
