I guess it's basically time for me to nake, since I'm about to head to bed and I sleep naked.

Taught Middle English verbs today and got to tell my students that English used to have a verb version of "naked": "naken" [to get naked]. Past tense "naked" I nake! I naked! He naketh! And, ofc, the imperative: "Nake! Right now!" #MedievalTwitter

I like the idea of naking (wait, nakening? hm) as a pure verb, rather than the other synonyms we have which largely involve a negation: - undress - disrobe - unclothe - expose - take one's clothes off These are okay, but don't feel as pure still: - strip - peel - bare

I've been thinking more recently about nakedness as the natural state. A friend was arguing on facebook against laws incriminating naking even in one's own yard, & ppl analogized "what if you wanted to show GORE?" & he retorted "but it's not gore, it's just ME."

And that's stuck with me: the simple me-ness of my body, naked. Nakedness is a kind of home.

"home" as "where you know you'll return to"

My initial inclination was to QT that first tweet and say "we should bring these words back!" and then my inner @LordChisholm was like "Normalize it yourself you coward" and I was like... tru. So I wrote this instead.

this isn't quite right, what I meant was, Normalize it yourself you coward. do/be it like it's the most normal thing in the world

Update: in the year ish since this thread, I've continued to remember the word "nake", and I've used it a handful of times, but I haven't done much towards making it a thing
