@this_is_silvia argh hm I am confused! I recorded an epic demo of the chorus in 5 part harmony in G but then I notice that I seem to want to sing the melody in the key of D (and it sounds way better in my voice) but I can't hit the bass harmony in D! 😣

hmmmm... have I a friend on here who can sing a D2? it's not that low, but it's low. @MasterTimBlais seems like more of a baritone, but maybe one of his pals, like the guy who sings Pegasi in the Aladdin Exoplanetology medley... hmm.... (obvi could just retune, but...)

was all stoked to make a lil project on bandlab.com (online DAW) for folks to add their harmonies to but they only support 1-6 as numerators for the time signature, and this piece is in 12/8 can probably set it up as 4/4 with a triplet feel but @BandLab fix plzzz

@RomeoStevens76 wait waaaaaat? I haven't seen the movie but I read the book as a kid and it was excellently trippy and it seems to me that if you end it halfway then it fails at its one job of being a neverending story 🤨

the tracks in there are exported from bitwig, where they sound way better with a ton of reverb, but I left the exports clean for idk reasons (also the thing SHOULD be in 12/8 time @ 78bpm (per quarter note) but since @BandLab doesn't do 12/8 time it's 4/4 @ 52 bpm instead)

also also there's a part in the bandlab labelled "silly fake descant" which was a bit that instead of tuning *down* a fourth to get from G to D, I tuned it UP A FIFTH, so it sounds a bit alvin-and-the-chipmunksy 😂 cool notes tho! ...just needs a soprano to sing it instead

People use consent to mean (at least) two things: a tool, and the thing the tool is supposed to accomplish. I think we need different words for the two things, and suggest "consent" for the tool and "participation" for the thing it's for.

I'll leave the implementation details as an exercise for the reader, but there's a bell curve meme to be made around the use of explicit verbal consent—particularly anything permissiony—as the *primary* tool in navigating how to have sexual interactions that are great for all.

One reason I'm a bit sympathetic to people who don't really trust science is that almost nobody actually working in science "trusts science" in a general sense. Especially post replication crisis, most scientists have a complex mental model of what they trust and don't trust.

@mattgoldenberg @m_ashcroft @MarieKondo @pjeby Insofar as you know me and didn't tag me, I'm sincerely curious in what ways you think I don't get this right! I'm not asserting I certainly do, but I broadly resonated with what you wrote here. Maybe mostly bc my main offering is an app? 🙃 (app predates me grokking this fwiw)

2 likes 0 RTs

@mattgoldenberg @m_ashcroft @MarieKondo @pjeby I've also found, both w Complice & simpler workflows, that sometimes a tool can solve the problem in a sort of straightforward way, & it's worth trying that. eg if someone is bouncing around because it hasn't occurred to them to try "pick a next action"… there are tools for that

2 likes 0 RTs

@mattgoldenberg @m_ashcroft @MarieKondo @pjeby but then if that encounters resistance, on whatever level including ~mysteriously~ they stop using the tool, that's a sign that they're overriding some other careabouts, either by how they're using the tool or by the choices of things they're trying to do. then it's emotion time!

@mattgoldenberg @m_ashcroft @MarieKondo @pjeby Ahh gotcha, makes sense. Yeah, the GCI course I guess isn't emotion-first in terms of its content (reflects where we were at when we first made it) but it does function as a gateway drug for people who are looking for tools/cogstrats to get introduced to emotions by coaches 😜

Thread · Perceptual Control Theory inverts the logic of reinforcement

Reinforcement learning is backwards because it implicitly says "when reward, behavior change" when actually, change is the *default*, and the thing being called "reward" says "stop changing, you found it" This figure-ground inversion is key.

16 likes 0 RTs

The whole concept here of PCT (Perceptual Control Theory) is that brains are in some state of organization that is set up to produce a set of controlled perceptions, like getting money to buy food to not be hungry, or telling jokes to make people laugh to feel connection.

5 likes 0 RTs

When something is perceived to be at an unwanted level (eg hunger, safety, connection, thirst, sex, meaning) the system goes into a state of reorganization, inhibiting old strategies and trying new ones. Once the error is resolved, the music stops and the organization stays.

6 likes 0 RTs

This is independent from whether the new strategy is actually the thing that solved the problem (which is where superstitions come from).

4 likes 0 RTs

There's also a question of what happens when two strategies for two different needs conflict. Often this produces oscillatory tug-of-war dynamics, but if you can gently hold all of the desiderata at once, there's usually some sort of win-win to be found.

Nick @nickcammarata ·

@coyotespike @visakanv @metaphorician @metaLulie Usually the answer is creativity. In a high dimensional space there’s (almost) always an easy win in some dimension, and these parts don’t want just one thing each. They’re complex and have their own worlds. It’s very high dimensional

4 likes 0 RTs

One important implication of this whole thing is that you can only motivate/train someone with reward *to the extent that they are otherwise deprived of the thing* and they don't have a better alternative to doing what you want so you give them the thing

BATNAs are underrated

When I learned this model, I still had a lot of questions. One of them was something like "then why do people get stuck? why don't they just reorganize out of stuckness?" So far I think the answer is something like "very sticky memes":

QC @QiaochuYuan ·

@AdeleDeweyLopez i asked @Malcolm_Ocean a version of this question once and he responded with a hypothesis by @DavidDeutschOxf that basically we have ancestral trauma that is good at reproducing itself (in a cycles of abuse kind of way) but not necessarily good for its individual human hosts

5 likes 0 RTs

Something I don't yet fully understand theoretically but feel an embodied impression of is like, once all of someone's basic needs are met—a tall order not just due to physical constraints & scarcity but due to internal conflicts produces contradictory self-sabotaging strategies—

2 likes 0 RTs

…once all of someone's basic needs are met… what then produces reorganization? I roughly sense that people have other drives such as wonder, compassion, grandeur, and so on, that mean even if they're in some sense totally satisfied, they still have things they want to achieve.

3 likes 0 RTs

People often protectively try to avoid "reinforcing" people's strategies that they see as coercive or unethical, but that's backwards. Sure, as long as that strategy works they'll keep doing it, but the bigger issue is not having another strategy that works BETTER.

3 likes 0 RTs

From a personal standpoint, what I try to do is instead of trying to shift others' behavior, I let them know what's working or not working *for me* about their behavior, and what I'm prepared to do about that (eg take space in relationship) and let their system reorganize.

5 likes 0 RTs

This is oversimplified & probably my instructions above won't be compilable on most peoples' cognitive runtimes atm, but I wanted to get out a rough sketch of my thinking here. Grokking the backwardsness of "reinforcement" is vital to noncoercive behavior change in self & other.

@metaLulie I have no idea. I am profoundly incapable of producing almost any work that doesn't feel original. I've had lots of inspirations, ofc, and I cite them, but I can't write a book summary for the life of me. Almost-exceptions are 2 tweetstorms—this one:

Thread · Redesigning Twitter DMs as private tweets

I could rant about all the problems I'd fix: - tweet/link previews above instead of below - can't see history if added to group DM - loading issues - no threading or specific-message-replying - no search - & countless more BUT! My man @hormeze demanded a total ground up version.

5 likes 1 RT

Okay so look guys, this is twitter. Why are the DMs even messages as opposed to just-between-the-two-of-us tweets? That seems like the starting point for ground-up redesign. Take advantage of epic threading & replying & resurfacing capability, & search comes for free!

12 likes 0 RTs

Then could add all sorts of cool shit like the ability to later *publish* certain of the DMs that you wrote (with context obscured) or even mutually agree to publish a whole segment of conversation as ordinary tweets!

9 likes 0 RTs

However! It's not that simple. In addition to DMs making it easier to express your thoughts by being private, they *also* make it easier to express your thoughts because you can publish (to the convo) simply by pressing *enter*. FB did that with comments to reduce friction

7 likes 0 RTs

Plus of course there's a simplicity to just being able to type back & forth. And how do you handle parallel replies? I think you'd need a whole different tweet composer, basically, to solve this, that would turn out to be huge for ordinary tweeting too.

5 likes 0 RTs

A tweet composer where enter is send (and shift-enter is newline). Not ideal by default outside DMs but a cool mode. And then maybe some way to indicate which specific message you're replying to, because everyone knows that good chat convos get 2-3 topics in parallel. "Tracks?"

What's your best* theory for how *gestures broadly* is going great? You're not allowed to attribute it to broad theories (e.g. don't just say "capitalism"). Be specific. * Interpret as you wish. Both "most plausible" and "most interesting" are good.

@DRMacIver Memes are starting to do the consciously-truth-seeking thing as opposed to the propagating-blindly thing. We've gotten worse at this in some ways in recent decades, but overall we know increasingly more about it over the last centuries, which is itself an example of the thing!

Realizing that part of why I have trouble summarizing things is that I want others to love the originals as much as I do and am worried that my summary will result in people rejecting the thing for reasons I don't think it deserves rejection. & be like "nooo he addresses that!"

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@metaLulie I have no idea. I am profoundly incapable of producing almost any work that doesn't feel original. I've had lots of inspirations, ofc, and I cite them, but I can't write a book summary for the life of me. Almost-exceptions are 2 tweetstorms—this one: twitter.com/Malcolm_Ocean/…

Curious where this belief comes from, specifically. I do remember when I was stoked about PCT in 2017 fearing rationalist skepticism about it, and also seeing that someone had already written some summaries on LW.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@metaLulie This has sometimes been frustrating, since sometimes I get excited about a book and want to hype it up but I get bogged down trying to write up a summary. Happened with PCT in 2017. Found alternative for McGilchrist in 2019: I just excite-tweeted "omg this relates to X, Y, Z"

0 likes 0 RTs

Maybe part of what's going on here is a kind of *attachment* to the outcome of others reading & liking the original, which puts me in an argumentative mode rather than a more exploratory/curious mode.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

New 2×2 I'm exploring. It's important in any convo to be able to: - report reality as one sees it - find out what others know Whether you do that in a sensemaking mode or controlling mode will affect what's possible emotionally, relationally, AND on the information level.

The curious mode is definitely a lot more like what my twitter threads about McGilchrist have been like. Even though they have moments of conveying something like a "response to potential rejection"

@michael_nielsen @stewartbrand Huh, struck by how well designed the set-up was—the person is leaning forward so far that they *have* to be be struggling to pull/push/(carry, ish) something, otherwise their center of gravity would be off and they'd fall over. Which suggests a whole situation.

2 likes 0 RTs

@michael_nielsen @stewartbrand Oh! Another option—struggling against wind (visible via tumbleweeds) Surprised nobody (at least in the 4mins I've watched so far) found the other solution to the center-of-gravity puzzle, which is to rotate the whole situation so person is walking uphill.

Thread · The Sacred Band, ancient sexuality, and depths of male friendship

What a mess of a thread & replies. Everyone talking past each other. I want to try essentially steelmanning what I understand the main thread to be saying. Note that I'm a very different guy than this guy, and I'll be saying what seems true *from my perspective* t.co/K989HesPVs

2 likes 0 RTs

The men in the Sacred Band of Thebes were definitely fucking. In fact, they were all pairs of lovers of some kind. This is not in dispute, including by the guy writing the thread! He wrote here about ancient greek male power+sex relationships patheos.com/blogs/inebriat…

0 likes 0 RTs

Those pederasty relationships were very different from contemporary "sexual orientation" and romantic homosexual relationships. Most of those men also had wives. The entire cultural concepts of sex & love (and who had the right to do it) were profoundly different.

0 likes 0 RTs

(As an aside, wikipedia suggests these relationships almost never had anal sex, which was considered shameful, but mostly had "intercrural sex" which is a fancy way of saying "fucking between someone's thighs". Idk if gay men do this today but if so I've never heard of it.)

0 likes 0 RTs

Thus, the mapping of "homosexuality" onto erastes-eromenos relationships is misleading, very similar to how mapping modern western romantic marriage concepts onto pre-romance marriage concepts or arranged marriages or whatever hunter-gatherers do is misleading.

0 likes 0 RTs

In parallel to this, there's also a phenomena we might call friendship. Friendship is fucking cool. And it can go way deeper than many people ever have the chance to experience, unfortunately. And surely it has also evolved in many ways over the millenia of human culture.

1 like 0 RTs

There are depths of friendship that most people don't experience because they assume that intimacy necessarily involves sexual or romantic elements. This means if one or both people don't want a sexual or romantic relationship, they can't have intimate friendship.

2 likes 0 RTs

Hence the classic maxim "men & women can't be Just Friends". In practice, this is often true, but it's not inevitable, it's a result of the same assumptions that keep men from being close friends because they don't want to be or seem gay. (There are other factors too)

0 likes 0 RTs

I've had multiple very close male friendships in my life, including my childhood best friend—when I wanted to go to a boarding school, he chose to go too, because it would have been too painful to both of us to part. I've said "I love you" to >5 male friends in the last 2y.

0 likes 0 RTs

Here's where I really diverge from the other guy's thread. I'm mostly straight, but not entirely. So I can say: I've had lots of close intimate friendships with men and they all feel totally different from the homoerotic spark I've *also* felt a few times with *other* men.

I guess it's basically time for me to nake, since I'm about to head to bed and I sleep naked.

Dr. Erik Wade -- CEASEFIRE NOW @erik_kaars ·

Taught Middle English verbs today and got to tell my students that English used to have a verb version of "naked": "naken" [to get naked]. Past tense "naked" I nake! I naked! He naketh! And, ofc, the imperative: "Nake! Right now!" #MedievalTwitter

I like the idea of naking (wait, nakening? hm) as a pure verb, rather than the other synonyms we have which largely involve a negation: - undress - disrobe - unclothe - expose - take one's clothes off These are okay, but don't feel as pure still: - strip - peel - bare

0 likes 0 RTs

I've been thinking more recently about nakedness as the natural state. A friend was arguing on facebook against laws incriminating naking even in one's own yard, & ppl analogized "what if you wanted to show GORE?" & he retorted "but it's not gore, it's just ME."

There's definitely a naive postmodern-ish version of "everybody's perspective has something meaningful to it" that misses the bandwidth thing & related things. Similar error to refusing to not just have taste in art but be willing to say "this is world-class art; that is not"

@EpistemicHope The "scaled down" part is interesting... you aren't just short but also have a small head I think? Like some people who are 5'4", if you scaled them linearly to be 5'10", would look really weird, but I think you'd still look proportioned. I've noticed some scaled-up people too.

@EpistemicHope Reading "I'm pretty short... though I am fit and muscular" my first thought is "show, don't tell". Quite precisely, my advice: Learn to do some impressive-looking acroyoga poses and include photos of you doing them shirtless with someone who's taller than you but less in shape.

1 like 0 RTs

@EpistemicHope Eh, not actually important the other person be less in shape. The point is that you're *showing off your body* while also communicating its size as a side effect. Idk how good your balance/coordination is but you might be able to get to some of these in <10 hours of practice.

1 like 0 RTs

@EpistemicHope Acroyoga came to mind because being smaller has advantages as a flyer, so some impressive poses would be lower-hanging fruit for you in particular. Though you could also base! I've based folks who weigh 50lbs more than me in some poses. Oh! Speaking of easier-if-smaller—FLAG.

@AskYatharth same reason a game tactic stops working if you keep using it—opponent outsmarts & blocks it guessing what's going on is some part of you doesn't trust the technique or how you're using it broadly, solution is to find a way to get all parts bought into iterating tech to suit

Thread · Why Fahrenheit beats Celsius for weather, and a better scale

people are saying this guy is just saying that because he's used to it but as a Canadian who decided to learn Fahrenheit at least somewhat (and am still not that familiar with it) I agree it's way better for describing weather than Celsius is

Sean T at RCP @SeanTrende ·

I will give you meters, kilograms and liters. The superiority of Fahrenheit for day-to-day life is a hill I am willing to die on. "0 is really cold, 100 is really hot" makes a lot more sense than 0 is getting to be pretty cold, 100 ends life as we know it."

5 likes 0 RTs

what makes Fahrenheit better is not that "0 is really cold, 100 is really hot"—that's it arguing in Celsius's terms 🤦‍♀️ what makes Fahrenheit better is precision: "low 60s" describes a natural size of range that Celsius must call "16-18" "high teens °C" is too broad to dress by!

0 likes 0 RTs

Having "temperature at which water freezes" as an obvious anchor point in Celsius is honestly pretty great for day-to-day life anywhere that freezes in winter, ngl. Were I starting over, I'd create a temperature system that has 0=water freezes, 200=water boils = best of both!

1 like 0 RTs

This system (literally Celsius×2) would have slightly larger degrees than Fahrenheit (which are Celsius×1.8). Unlike other excellent decimal metric units like kg, m, etc, the 0-100 scale doesn't do anything useful since you can't multiply or divide shit anyway!

0 likes 0 RTs

I'm guessing that if the creators of Celsius had REALLY thought about the UX of their scale outside science, and simulated trying to use it in that context for a bit, they would have come up with the same thing I just did but alas,

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Almost nothing is actually designed.

0 likes 0 RTs

ironically in Canada the main thing we still use Fahrenheit for after switching a few decades ago is cooking, which is chemistry and would be better handled with Celsius! like water-boiling temperature is straightforwardly relevant there, & differences of 2 degrees rarely matter

0 likes 0 RTs

Replying to Kevin Mind @Kevinmeinhardt ·

@svenosaurus @SeanTrende Anything over 50 doesn’t really happen outside in the real world so to get the same level of precision you need decimals. It’s the same issue with measuring human height, furniture, and clothes.

@KevinMeinhardt2 @svenosaurus @SeanTrende I went and wrote a whole thread on this and I'm still not totally sure why (I'm a Canadian and I ended up concluding we should just multiply the Celsius scale by 2 and have the best of both worlds)

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@SarahAMcManus @CurziRose That's the book that talks about it and it's a great book but I'm not sure it really thoroughly lays out a model of what dignity *is*. Seems important to do and I will probably do it at some point, as a dignitarian myself.

@SarahAMcManus @CurziRose One source I would draw on in seeking to properly model what dignity is is @Chris_arnade's book called Dignity, where he goes and sincerely meets people in many of the "worst" neighborhoods in the USA. @SarahAMcManus @CurziRose the TL;DR of dignitarianism is reframing all discriminatory isms as rankism and saying "while there may be patterns related to race, gender, etc... the underlying issue is that we EVER consider it acceptable to use one's rank/power to deny someone else dignity"

Thread · Feeling superior to both sides as a way to bust false dichotomies

I've noticed a useful shape recently which is when my own thinking is doing this "found a way to feel superior to both" thing. It seems to be a great response to false dichotomy questions that try to get you to take sides; by being playfully arrogant, it avoids both-sides-ism

This feels like an excellent metamodern move. It's satisfying in part because by (self-)owning your own sense of feeling superior (rather than just talking from a feels-superior frame) you're clearly not taking your own thinking too seriously.

3 likes 0 RTs

It's also metamodern in that it acknowledges a sense that viewpoints can be superior to others. @HFreinacht writes in depth about how po-mo has a paradox of using a "po-mo is best" frame while simultaneously flatly rejecting all claims of superiority in the name of relativism

2 likes 0 RTs

Of course, another key piece of metamodern thinking is being able to listen to people you disagree with, and steelman their perspectives. It's just... the time to do that is not when a frame needs busting and a question needs unasking.

3 likes 0 RTs

In general basically everyone has something to contribute to understanding what's broken, and it's honestly pretty easy to discern as long as you can remember that someone being able to point at a problem doesn't mean that their solution is any good

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Accepting that something is a problem does not require accepting any proposed solutions. 99% of described problems are real and important, at least in some sense. 99% of proposed solutions are at best irrelevant and at worst actively would exacerbate things.

27 likes 2 RTs

The emotional brain is experiencing something totally real—just as your high school is real. The part of you that’s taking in reality is experiencing something totally real—just as boats are real. But there is no real “my high school, except on an boat”.

26 likes 2 RTs

People experience these mashups in relationships as well, emotionally experiencing their friends & partners as if they’re a parent, teacher, sibling, or bully from childhood, or an earlier friend or partner. Or, as adults, they project authority on their parents they had as kid.

Pete outlines over a dozen creative responses to the flashbacks, most of which are transformational and a few are counteractive. Using some counteractive approaches alongside transformational ones can produce short-term empowerment that fuels further transformation.

11 likes 0 RTs

What do I mean by counteractive & transformational? The distinction comes from Unlocking the Emotional Brain, an excellent book you can read an excellent summary of here: lesswrong.com/posts/i9xyZBS3…

17 likes 1 RT

Counteractive approaches to behavior change are based on trying to train/convince oneself to do X instead of Y. Ok for simple mechanical habits but for anything emotion-based requires ongoing maintenance to perform some new consciously-desired behavior in spite of one's urges.

13 likes 0 RTs

Transformational approaches are based on understanding what’s generating the behavior in the first place—how it’s understanding the situation such that it’s doing what it’s doing and it makes total sense to do that thing. Then the part doing X can *see* if Y makes more sense.

What to do if you notice you’re dreaming? As anyone who’s tried to lucid dream can attest, noticing you’re dreaming is at least half the battle in the first place! Emotional untangling techniques like Bio-Emotive can make the move more accessible, internally AND culturally.

17 likes 2 RTs

Here's a way I like to go about disentangling two key dimensions of things. If I'm on my game I can notice I'm having a strong emotional response to a situation that doesn't directly threaten me, and get curious and maybe reveal "I'm activated/projecting"

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

While how I’m feeling is always a response to what’s happening, the size and shape of that response have more to do with my history than the particulars of the situation. Important to honor the role of both the external situation and my internal context of interpretation.

9 likes 0 RTs

What to do if you notice someone else is dreaming? I used to think it was the job of the person having the flashback, to notice & pull themselves out. That’s great when it works, but as I’ve mentioned, it’s really hard to notice.

10 likes 0 RTs

I also used to think that if I noticed someone else was in a flashback, the thing for me to do is to point it out to them and try to get them to wake up. Sometimes this works but in my experience it tends to backfire because it’s an attempt at controlling them.

12 likes 1 RT

It works better if I’m able to respect the intelligence of the other person’s emotional cognition. Rather than saying “wake up — be present with me”, acknowledging that on some level they genuinely are having trouble telling me apart from someone who has (and would) hurt them.

17 likes 1 RT

Then I try to take on a playful improvisational stance that asks “how can I become an invalid target for whatever they’re projecting on me?” I might fail, but the important thing is I'm actually trying to give them new data to grok as opposed to demanding they reinterpret.

24 likes 0 RTs

As I said above, the size and shape of an emotional response has more to do with the person's history than the particulars of the situation, but all the same, *something* in what I was doing resulted in them having had that response, in that moment, not a different one.

9 likes 0 RTs

In general, creating safety for everybody is the aim—and if creating safety for the other person feels threatening or like it would make me unworkably vulnerable, I need to start by creating safety for myself.

8 likes 0 RTs

Someone close to you going into a flashback sucks. It feels disconnecting. That's natural and you don't have to like it. I've noticed there's a difference between the intrinsic disconnect though vs my own attachment fears being triggered. If so, any "wake up" comes from panic!

10 likes 0 RTs

Instead of trying to wake the other person up, soothe yourself and affirm your own experience of not liking what's happening.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

In my experience, people trying to wake each other up directly, whatever that means, and no matter how spiritually wise they feel in that moment, tend to be doing it in part out of discomfort with being with the "asleep" person. I've been on both sides of this countless times.

9 likes 0 RTs

(Man. I try to write these posts/threads in first person perspective about how I approach things but it's so easy to lapse back into imperative case. Probably partially because using "one" in English is awkward, so one ends up with general-you, and then from there into advice.)

7 likes 0 RTs

Btw, what's happening here isn't a biological flaw. It's the brain working effectively to rapidly generate a model of what's going on and what to do about it. Same hardware that lets you "pick up like it was just yesterday" when you meet an old friend you haven't seen in years.

15 likes 1 RT

Also the same cognitive process that allows a firefighter to rapidly recognize something suspicious about the temperature of the house he's in and get his team to safety before the floor collapses—a specific case study from this book:

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@Plinz @tcooney8 Check out the book Sources of Power, which has a detailed model of how decisions actually get made in high pressure situations when there isn't time for rational approaches that enumerate multiple options. Model is called "recognition-primed decision-making" Very cool shit.

In the original tweet Qiaochu wrote that I responded to with the dream mashup metaphor, he's talking about not just strong acute trigger moments but ongoing worldviews. Dream mashups are basically the default mode!

QC @QiaochuYuan ·

@visakanv as usual i’ll chip in with: trauma has a lot to do with it. simple ex. is people who got bullied for being honest about what they liked growing up and now feel unsafe talking about it trauma means people living in different worlds, made of the worst parts of their childhoods

7 likes 0 RTs

The only reason they even seem bizarre is that the generalizations tend to get stuck. And it's not just big-t Trauma from abuse! Even if you had a pretty good childhood, there's still lots of learnings that you inevitably picked up that were true then but aren't as an adult:

9 likes 1 RT

And, unless you were homeschooled by incredibly integrated parents, or enrolled in an excellent Montessori school or something, you probably also picked up some learnings like these: (plus others from avoiding your peers making fun of you)

17 likes 2 RTs

These learnings aren’t made out of words; they’re an embodied sense of the way the world is. But, we might ask, why don’t people immediately unlearn these generalizations as soon as they’re no longer relevant?

10 likes 1 RT

Shame, mostly—in part due to some of these very learnings. Untangling these learnings requires curiously exploring what they are & how they got there, which requires acknowledging that you don’t actually know why you’re doing what you’re doing. …Hard when ppl want u to justify.

13 likes 1 RT

Another stuckness factor is that whether shame or fear or sadness, most people learn in childhood that there are a lot of feelings it’s not safe to feel. The feelings themselves come to feel threatening, if expressing them means freaking out our parents.

Instead, we have the impression that we are simply being irrational and should snap out of it. These are deep confusions; waking up from them *ongoingly* requires a thorough reorganization of our thinking, not just a jolt into presence (which may help for a moment).
