How the Goal-Crafting Intensive evolved toward metasystematic, non-coercive coaching

Our Goal-Crafting Intensive workshops have organically evolved a lot over the years. In fact, we're considering overhauling the landing page bc it still reads as fairly mainstream systematic, whereas at this point all of our coaches are metasystematic & consciously non-coercive.

As one past participant said, "if I'd just seen the landing page, I wouldn't have been interested... but seeing the landing page and knowing it was run by you—I was very intrigued." And he got a lot out of it! (I think this was @orpheaskk)

oh man, strongly recommended – best place to get help in crafting internally aligned, non-coercive goals

quoting @Malcolm_Ocean: Tickets now available for our yearly Goal-Crafting Intensives, a unique online workshop that doesn't exhaust you with hours of zoom, but instead gives you space to work on sorting out your life, plus a private channel with coaches to get unstuck or advice! https://t.co/DJW9pTTlJV

That's partially an evolution of my own thinking process—when we first launched the GCIs 4 years ago, I had only just started reading @Meaningness and was still very involved with the CFAR rationality community—I literally did 1 of their instructor trainings 3wks before GCI #1

Having said that, the philosophy for Complice & GCI has been remarkably meta-systematic the whole time… it's not based on trying to execute plans perfectly (tho GCI has an Execution module) but on improvising towards a purpose that can never be perfectly articulated.

So I think in some ways the evolution of the workshop can be thought of as it becoming the sort of thing it wanted to be in the first place, as the people hosting it matured & developed. Anyway, some specific examples of changes:

1: we're more likely to encourage people to integrate resistance now, vs trying to encourage them to use something like Beeminder or some other discipline-based approach. There's still value in those approaches sometimes tho! As one of our coaches notes:

Trinley Goldenberg @mattgoldenberg ·

It's my estimation that people who have always done the non-coercion thing should spend 100 days forcing themselves to do scary things. People who have always forced themselves I recommend spend 100 days not forcing themselves into anything.

2: relatedly, a bunch of the coaches have now studied emotional processing techniques and frameworks like Coherence Therapy, and we bring a bunch of those moves in, eg encouraging accessing unconscious emotional truths by getting people to speak out loud

QC @QiaochuYuan ·

@FioraAeterna you can try two sentence stem completions: first, say out loud "i should want..." and let the sentence complete itself as many times as you can, notice how your body reacts to each completion. next the same for "i actually want..."

3: last year for NY 2020, @SarahAMcManus & I added a new whole "long-term / decade" module to the course content, with content on topics we wouldn't have thought of 4 years ago: - Vision & Values - Navigating Uncertainty & Complexity - Becoming Resilient

Sarah McManus ✨🍲 BOLD SOUP🍲✨ @SarahAMcManus ·

@themarcusnewton @GoodGriefNetwk @cognitivepolicy And there's a whole vast landscape of other crucial toolsets for resilience - around emotional wellbeing, communication, relationships, conflict facilitation, meaning, physical wellbeing, practical infrastructure, decision-making - this is just a tiny subset!

GCI will evolve more, and we're also excited to help people host events on other topics using the same unique course structure we've developed, of choose-your-own-adventure content+exercises, coworking, & text-based live coaching. DM if interested.

13/ Yesterday, I attended the [[@CompliceGoals]] Goal Crafting Intensive workshop. It was a revelation on what an online training could be. On top of the Mastermind I mentioned above, I'm totally stealing their online workshop style. Join the beta v2 run: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAI…

And if you want to learn more about the event or sign up, you can do so here! As I said above, we have the capacity to go *way* deeper than you might imagine just from looking at this landing page. Feel free to show up and ask me/us about whatever! complice.co/event/plan2021…
