How naming a problem can reinforce it

people usually frame challenging situations in ways that reinforce those challenges

@Malcolm_Ocean I think of it as like it doesn’t help solve the problem and I suspect the problem would be more solvable if it weren’t framed the way it is same for “incel” too the problem is not the lack of sex the narcissist’s problem is not the self-fixation, that’s more of a symptom

this can happen from the frame of the person with the problem (eg "incel") or can be the result of the problem being framed from the issues it causes others (eg "ADHD")

@ADHD_Alien been thinking lately that ADHD is better framed as obedience deficit disorder

arguably "incel" is actually inside out too, in a different way—the focus on one's own inability to get sex is like a teacher focusing on their inability to get the "ADHD" student's attention/obedience

another statement of this, maybe slightly stronger & more actionable:

People explain why they're having the problems they're having, via the metaphors they use.
