hey twitter i have a question about dropping out of college from one of my former summer camp kids i wanted to get your take on! what do you think?

@QiaochuYuan for another month, seems worth it but accept the meaninglessness and reframe all remaining schoolwork as irrelevant paperwork you need to file so the bureaucracy will hand over your degree and don't worry about getting good grades just do the minimum you need to to pass

@QiaochuYuan I did this in my last year of school (also in part because the schoolwork seemed meaningless compared to my company, complice.co) and it was profoundly clarifying the important thing I had to unhook was the idea that my profs' opinions mattered to anything except 🎓

@QiaochuYuan getting really clear that those grades were not a reflection of my intelligence, or my willpower, or my overall competence, or anything like that. I wasn't there to be assessed. they just needed to see that I could complete the paperwork. I did, so I got the grad certificate.

@QiaochuYuan worth also tracking that that paper can be useful for things other than getting future jobs—where again, there are usually better ways to prove your competence to those whose respect you'd care to earn such as immigration that was one motivator for me

@QiaochuYuan If you want to read more of my story of satisficing on schoolwork, I've written about it here. This story mostly takes place a year before the further reframe to "this is just paperwork". It includes the time I never even started a term project worth 25%. roamresearch.com/#/app/malcolmo…
