want a tech recommendation: wireless earbuds, really good battery life, functional for hands-off phone calls, don't care that much about audio quality, can stay in with a medium about of movement (jogging around), i don't want to spend more than i have to

@natural_hazard I got these (link below) awhile back. They were cheap (~$40) and fine. I forget what the battery life is. They're not currently for sale, idk what the new version is. I gave them to a friend when I found my $150 Jabra ActiveElites which I'd lost. amazon.com/gp/product/B07…

@natural_hazard Based on Wirecutter reviews, it seems like this budget pick with a 5h battery life per charge might be your guy. I only get 3h with my Jabras, though usually I want to rest for a few minutes after that anyway, and they recharge super quick. amazon.ca/dp/B0857JLRFJ?…

Are there any insights from the ‘science of sleep’ besides 1) you need enough sleep 1b) sleep helps you heal 2) there are sleep phases like REM No fake insights please

@michaelcurzi did you know there's a sleep phase that is so unremarkable that it doesn't even have its own wikipedia page (though it's pretty obvious what it's for, and it's something humans don't need any more because we have secure shelter)

Been saying this for years. Light sleep, despite being one of the most common human activities (~4h/day for almost everyone) doesn't even have its own wikipedia page. Oh interesting move from @SoundCloud. Talked about this exact thing around fair royalties w @Beehtrix last summer. Still a ton more stuff needed from streaming services in order for them to be better than Winamp + 40M songs. See my thread below:

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Design Rant time! Today: audio streaming services. Why are they all the same old boring things and stuck in the same old metaphors of "playlists" and "radio"? Virtual ports of old music-library managers. Lots of improvements to be made—in particular, tags! #ThingsIWantToExist twitter.com/Malcolm_Ocean/…

1 like 0 RTs

Seems like an obvious next move is to allow fans to pay more. Similar to patreon tiers, except—OH! Holy shit, okay this is neat. The $ is automatically distributed based on how much you listen to each artist, but an artist could have perks that get unlocked at a certain $ amount.

1 like 0 RTs

So what this means is that if an artist makes a $7 tier, then if you mostly listen to them, your $10/mo subscription will get you access to that tier. But if they're only 20% of your listens, you'd need to have your monthly amount be >$35/mo total in order to be at their $7 tier!

1 like 0 RTs

This might be a bad idea, but it's honestly kind of a cool one. I originally wasn't imagining per-artist tiers at all, I was just thinking like, the bigger your monthly contribution, the more your fav artists get and also maybe you get an overall profile badge for it. But idk!

I feel like it should cost *more* money to own a domain if you don't have anything meaningful on it. Like some cities tax houses more if vacant. (I have no idea whatsoever how to possibly enforce that; way to easy to make ad aggregators etc)

17 likes 0 RTs

Replying to Richard Ngo @RichardMCNgo ·

@Ceasar_Bautista @Malcolm_Ocean Switching costs are too high, this just ends up being a tax on entrepreneurship. E.g Google won't give up google.com for a billion dollars, so they'll pay at least that in rent every year. But it's only valuable because they made it that way.

@RichardMCNgo @Ceasar_Bautista Yeah, this doesn't work for exactly this reason plus another reason: it would mean anyone could basically steal someone's domain if they have more money. Important to be able to say "this is not for sale".

@m_ashcroft I have billing set up through Stripe (using Complice but there are other ways) and so I just push a button when it's time to bill, and it goes on their credit card. No need to send an invoice or follow-up or anything like that unless the payment fails. Definitely the way, imo.

Friend, n. Someone with whom one has mutual comfort suggesting spending time together with no particular justification or reason, no agenda or topic, and no time limit.

(There are other definitions of friend, ofc, but this one is really elegant in many ways and seems native to my system.) (And there's also something more like "close friend" which might be someone who'd actually have your back, or someone you can call out of the blue crying.)

Also obviously my definition includes that lovers/partners/spouses are *also* friends (although there's a stage where you get so fucking close you have to come up with reasons to take space 😂) And some family are friends, but not all!

I used to lament that things were so poorly designed. (I have the eye—I can't not see it. It's a gift and a curse.) But then I realized that it's much more accurate to say that most things weren't designed at all.

20 likes 1 RT

Even your computer, and software you use every day, that had dozens of designers supposedly working on it. Sure, some *elements* of the app were designed. But on every level of abstraction, nondesign crept in with hundreds of unquestioned assumptions.

One should meditate all the time. Take this not as an instruction but as a definition for what meditation must necessarily be in order for that to be true. [channeling @meditationstuff—I wouldn't personally call this "meditation" and I'm not at all certain it's wise to do so]

@Malcolm_Ocean I don't say this! I'm more like, when you meditate, meditate; when you're living life, just live, get lost in life. Roughly speaking. Perhaps the two will blend on their own, perhaps they won't. But it happens in its own time, with correct practice.

@nickcammarata the basic thing about “interest in things vs interest in people” and the “systemizing male brain” also seem relevant; it’s like you’re talking about treating oneself as a mechanism to enjoy systemizing, which might be counterintuitive

@meekaale @nickcammarata Yeah I think it's probably: computers are logical tools readily graspable by the left hemisphere that wants to grasp tools. Trying to do same thing with *that* attitude to your own psychology (✨mind hacks✨) works okay but less legible & tends to generate opponent processes.

@metaLulie ahhh—we need to distinguish between confidence in the sense of "conviction of the content of what I'm saying" and confidence in the sense of "groundedness & expansiveness & sense of self-worth etc" can overshoot the former can't overshoot the latter but faking it can be awkward

@CruzCalvo depends on how elastic the demand is for artist merch I really don't have a good sense of that! are there X mil ppl who want to spend $Y/yr on merch, from <whoever their fav artist is> or does incredible music inspire people to buy merch who otherwise wouldn't? (/buy more)

People sometimes ask me how I know patients are telling the truth. The answer is that objective truth doesn’t matter (as though there is such a thing). What I’m there to understand is what’s true for the patient, because that’s what their feelings & choices are based on.

@dremilyanhalt I've found the concept of "pseudomemory" helpful for this. Treat it as a memory for doing meaning-work, but not as a claim about anything that happened in the world that others ought to also remember or that necessarily implies external consequences.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Thread · Searching for a better word for "PCT error"

I want a short word that means precisely "PCT Error", ie "the gap between a reference level and a perception, for any ontum at any level of the control system hierarchy." "Error" has "mistake" connotations "Desire" sounds too inherently-meaningful

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

ontum = a unit of ontology Using a PCT lens, each of my perceptual control systems is responsible for perceiving & regulating exactly one ontum, and the set of all such onta in my system *is* my ontology.

7 likes 0 RTs

"Urge" comes to mind. I like the connection with how the Coherence Therapy folks talk about how any symptom is "urgently needed" by the client in the context in which it is produced, as they're construing that context.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

> "You won’t fully grasp [Coherence Therapy] until you grasp the nimble, active genius of the psyche not only in constructing personal reality, but also in purposefully manifesting any one of its myriad possible states to carry out any of its myriad possible purposes..."

0 likes 0 RTs

"Want" is also close to "PCT Error", but is confusable for the concept of the reference level itself. Maybe less so historically, when "want" often meant "lack", as in the Selkirk Grace:

0 likes 0 RTs

But "want" still connotes umm... okay so like a "goal" is another way to point at "reference level". I guess by definition a goal is something you want to achieve. But there's a diff between a goal you feel stuck on vs one in a state of smooth flow.

Intend (12/100 threads) @IntendApp ·

Goal = recognizable desired state in the future, that causes you to act differently in the present so as to realize it. If... 🛣️ no recognizable state = "trajectory" 😣 not desired = "should" 👀 not future = "regret" ☁️ no action = "dream" 🤠 actions just for show = "signalling"

0 likes 0 RTs

Hmm, part of the issue here is that there's a relativeness. For an error at a given level in the PCT hierarchy, the level above is the "why", and the level below is the "how".

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Fighting = trying to achieve different ends in a way that contradicts. eg a person who is late driving somewhere: 2 high-level goals "friends not mad at me", "don't get arrested" ↳ 2 medium-level goals "don't be late", "don't speed" ↳ 2 contradicting 🚗 speeds: 86mph, 60mph

1 like 0 RTs

@pjeby explores calling this "energy" instead, but that has a bunch of other connotations ranging from the idea that it should be conserved to the thing hippies mean when they talk about somebody's energy. Plus sometimes it's stuck; more like opposing forces than energy.

1 like 0 RTs

Force... Robert Fritz's term "creative tension" is almost exactly pointing at the right thing, but first of all it's too LONG. Oh! Second of all, his concept of "oscillating tension" approximately refers to one mode of two PCT Errors being in conflict.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@context_ing @garybasin @QiaochuYuan @fortelabs @ben_r_hoffman Relevant to this whole thing is Robert Fritz's concepts of Oscillating Tension & Creative Tension, but I'm not sure where a good intro is. At a glance, this article seems decent and can be read as a basic application of the PCT model I described above. productiveflourishing.com/a-users-guide-…

1 like 0 RTs

That suggests that "tension" could itself be the word. There's something there! Though ofc connotes muscle tension, stress, etc. There is indeed a kind of pulling. And it highlights how oscillating tension is in some sense still towardsness, not awayness

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@cosimia_ Part of the issue is (and this is why I say positive vs negative motivation are different in all systems) you can't AIM awayness based motivation. In 1-dimensional systems, this is fine because there's no aiming to do (as long as you don't go past the repulsor)

2 likes 0 RTs

I'm thinking that a word building on "tension" could be the way to go. We also already have "intention" & "attention" which are very relevant. "Intention" is actually nearly literally the thing! But again, too many connotations or something.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@QiaochuYuan @andy_matuschak & while it has an "intention" list instead of a "task" list, they're still structurally/functionally very similar to tasks so it's easy to fall back into old patterns. 1 like 0 RTs

Though "inclinations" is not quite right either, maybe. The obvious downhillness of doing what your control systems intend is cybernetic and loopy, not like actual gravitation which just goes until it stops and doesn't actually fight opposition. malcolmocean.com/2016/06/you-fl…

The term "pre-success failure" from @ScottAdamsSays' book is a gem. His related idea that you should have systems and not have goals is absurd. (have both!) Scott cites Olympic athletes as examples. 🤨 Take 3 guesses what goal an Olympic athlete has... 🥇🥈🥉

4 likes 0 RTs

Speaking of which, what even is a goal? Here's the definition we use: (this tweet just below is not really a thread, but contextualizes the following thread)

2 likes 0 RTs

And here's a thread that goes into depth about what happens when you remove one of those key ingredients, inspired by people demonstrating what happens to cookies when you change the recipe:

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

1🛣️ no recognizable state = "trajectory" This one is kind of odd to start with, because moreso than the others, it doesn't necessarily lead to wasted effort. In fact, if you want to explore, whether a new city or a new industry, simply following your appetite can be lovely!

1 like 0 RTs

Meanwhile, there are a few components you *don't* need in order to have a goal, as far as we're concerned. (this tweet is actually from the systems-vs-goals thread already linked, but contextualizes the following thread)

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

This is a very spacious meaning for "goal". It doesn't require:  📅 a due date (usually embarrassingly over-optimistic)  #️⃣ a numerical metric (which is just a proxy for what really matters)  🏁 a state of finality (it has to be in the future, but it can be ongoing)

1 like 0 RTs

And this thread takes each of these:  📅due date  #⃣numerical metric  🏁state of finality and for each one, asks these questions:  • why do we think we need this?  • how can it mess you up?  • when might you want it anyway?

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

This thread is in large part about infinite games ♾ Goals are kind of like games you play with yourself. That sometimes includes finite, bounded games with wins & losses, but the whole thing is a lot more fun if held within a container of infinite games. From Carse's book:

1 like 0 RTs

Here's another thread expanding the concept of goal (is goal even the best word? what else might we call them?) which wasn't written to point people at our workshops but is definitely relevant:

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Realization: the way I relate to my goals on complice.co is… kinda like ritual magic. Basically by naming & enumerating the main careabouts I'm moving towards, I create affordances for invoking them as sources of motivation & clarity. 🧙‍♂️✨ Thread on naming goals 🧵

1 like 0 RTs

Relatedly, a thread about how easy it is to not complete courses you sign up for, that reflects on how that implicitly went into the design of GCI, having it be all at once so you either go or don't, and with time to work while there rather than homework.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

The number of online courses I have signed up for & not actually completed is absurdly high. Especially self-paced ones but even like… I dropped out of @fortelabs' BASB halfway. Watched a lil of @nateliason Roam course. Early backer on @m_ashcroft's AT course, haven't touched.

Anyway, one of the unique things about GCI is that you get DEEP coaching via chat from multiple coaches at once. This isn't just protips: we can untangle major internal conflicts & help you find your learning edge.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

In this thread, Malcolm is gonna hype up the many coaches we've got coaching at our Goal-Crafting Intensives next weekend & in January. If you come to the event, you get a channel with 6-12 coaches in it answering your Qs in parallel. Let's go! 🔥🤩 complice.co/event/plan2021…

My guess is that I can realistically keep track of less goals than I can count on two hands.

@Conaw @thepericulum Seems the main security reason is clickjacking, and in principle if there were other domains that were trusted, they could perhaps be whitelisted by not sending the X-Frame-Options header to requests from those domains... Could maybe also just like, disable settings when framed.

For those curious, these were the inspirations for this experiment: knowing our position within a book by the thickness of pages to either side, and also the way the world curves back in animal crossing to reveal more of the world than you would've seen otherwise

[2 more photos]

@azlenelza ahhhh this is so cool I've also reflected on this being missing from digital reading experience, and have mused briefly about having an e-reader device with 2-3 foldable screens that can ~bookmark & flip between them to cross-reference diff books or within book.

@RichDecibels I think profoundly The power dynamics between adult & child map onto many other power-over dynamics such as race & gender. Without going into detail, I present for your examination these two words and how they are used from one adult to another:     "boy"   "girl"

Is there a simple historical explanation for why medicine (esp psychology) doesn’t care about you feeling extremely well, and just tries to prevent you from feeling too unwell I’d expect the societies that optimized wellness to far surpass ones that didn’t?

@nickcammarata Argument from exploitation, which I present here in its basic form absent affordances: if you are unwell you can't work for the man if you are extremely well you WON'T work for the man Game A hierarchies necessitate limited wellness. Only during transition does this seem weird.

Thread · Reframing final-year schoolwork as bureaucratic paperwork

Replying to QC @QiaochuYuan ·

hey twitter i have a question about dropping out of college from one of my former summer camp kids i wanted to get your take on! what do you think?

@QiaochuYuan for another month, seems worth it but accept the meaninglessness and reframe all remaining schoolwork as irrelevant paperwork you need to file so the bureaucracy will hand over your degree and don't worry about getting good grades just do the minimum you need to to pass

21 likes 0 RTs

@QiaochuYuan I did this in my last year of school (also in part because the schoolwork seemed meaningless compared to my company, complice.co) and it was profoundly clarifying the important thing I had to unhook was the idea that my profs' opinions mattered to anything except 🎓

8 likes 0 RTs

@QiaochuYuan getting really clear that those grades were not a reflection of my intelligence, or my willpower, or my overall competence, or anything like that. I wasn't there to be assessed. they just needed to see that I could complete the paperwork. I did, so I got the grad certificate.

6 likes 0 RTs

@QiaochuYuan worth also tracking that that paper can be useful for things other than getting future jobs—where again, there are usually better ways to prove your competence to those whose respect you'd care to earn such as immigration that was one motivator for me

@QiaochuYuan If you want to read more of my story of satisficing on schoolwork, I've written about it here. This year, I'm writing a check for nearly 50% of what I earned in 2020. I have it saved up in account, and I'm paying it in one lump sum to the government. It's a fucking brutal check. Imagine having 50% of your total yearly earnings in a bank account you have to give away.

@Aella_Girl As a fellow self-employed person, I feel you. It's huge. Can see why people seek out loopholes. CRA (=🇨🇦IRS) finally started wanting quarterly instalments from me though, so that'll be the end of the single lump sum, which will probably make budgeting more clear for me too.

Having said that: It does seems relevant to point out that the someone taking it from you is the same one that gets to mandate that the money has value in the first place and that you as a physical being = owner of this bank acct.

5 likes 0 RTs

@Aella_Girl @Crimsonak1 Which is not to say that it's right/fair/whatever for them to take it! "would there still be taxes in eutopia?" I've been pondering this question sometimes, in light of the famous quote: "’Tis impossible to be sure of any thing but Death and Taxes" My hunch is "yes in some sense but they'd look very different."

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Eutopia is, by definition, the answer to the question "where are we when we ask if we're there yet and everyone says yes"

11 likes 0 RTs

That quote about death & taxes seems to express a deeper systems truth: • all things must end • all things, while they maintain, must maintain an environment And these would continue to be true in eutopia.

8 likes 1 RT

Parts must maintain the order within the wholes they are part of, for the parts to continue to survive & thrive. Taxes are a super crude way to do that, especially when the systems that are in charge of figuring out how to use the resources are bad at sensemaking & dialogue.

4 likes 0 RTs

But insofar as for various reasons whole-managers are needed (which, beyond coordination problems, are often for interfacing with that-which-is-outside-a-given-whole—this is why we have a self, and why burning man needs an org) they need support of various kinds.

4 likes 0 RTs

Interestingly, companies work kind of the opposite of this: the employees need to do work to support the whole (which is the taxes) but then money flows from the whole to the parts. Likewise with eating food & breathing air, and it getting distributed to every organ & cell.

5 likes 0 RTs

Then we get into ~game theory~ because ofc there's such a thing as a person who drives on roads but pays no taxes, or an employee who collects a salary but does no work (or sabotages). freeloading is a thing. but it's only a good deal in meh circumstances

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Now that COVID is over, markets are about to take a dump. People will sell their fake digital money to buy vacations and shoes. It’s the law of the markets.

@garybasin hm, something about this initially read as plausible to me, but then I considered the overall size of the markets and the amount of selling needed to take a vacation or buy something to show off, and it seems like it would be a teensy % vibes w this tho:

Here's a simple technique that tells you when to sell your investments Never sell! Don't liquidate unless you need the money. Only buy assets that you believe in enough to hold forever.

I've thought about this many times since I read it and found it a really useful critique for my thinking about investing, though it's not my only heuristic.

@julianweisser small, yet beautiful towns organized around a loose shared hobby/interest. The “membership dues” to the group = rent. Too much housing demand, not enough supply. You need to be in the know to find a place to stay. Once you’re in, you’re in until you give up your spot.

@nathanfray @julianweisser I'm kinda interested in creating something like this, although simultaneously recognizing that's probably a bit like intending to create a scenius—kind of naive 😜 But nonetheless, would be interested in talking with you about what you know about such towns!

not to be melodramatic but i think we've been deeply failed by our stories in a really fundamental way. hardly any stories explore what to me are the real sources of conflict. almost nothing gets past "identify and beat up the bad guy" as the primary conflict resolution strategy

@QiaochuYuan the Steerswoman Series by Rosemary Kirstein is one that comes to mind as having richer conflict resolution, although it certainly starts by having the appearance of bad guys, which then unravels and becomes very complex & confusing also good example of Kegan 4-5 transition

chainsmokers songs are good poetry, with rhyming (including internal rhyme) more like what you'd expect from rap and they have a concrete situatedness: a terrace in Paris that Blink-182 song that we beat to death in Tucson

@QiaochuYuan @quotidiania I like to say that the presence of the intense emotion IS situated and not incidental, but neither its size nor shape are per se about the situation so much as how I'm construing it. Tryna fix a bug with the complice.co linkifier module (turns urls into links), and I nearly downloaded a 19kB (minified!) library with 100s of hardcoded TLDs (eg .com) before I was like wait, I don't need to police this! New regex: \b(https?:\/\/|www\.)\S+[.:]\S+

1 like 0 RTs

This new regex says "look, if you put https://thing or www.thing, imma let you click it! not my job to tell you if the domain is a valid TLD or whatever!" It'd be nice to match eg plain complice.co with no http or www, but tbh that's rare in Complice context anyway.

I'm legit super confused about how a bunch of people think this opens up channels for harassment. It's just an email client. It's an email client. You put in a recipient email, you send a message. Thread · Why racialized emoji were a unicode design mistake

Watched this at 1.75x speed. Was kinda helpful. I'm pissed at Apple for violating the unicode guidelines & making white emoji. Also pissed at whoever thought the solution was to add other races rather than acknowledge that the categories of unicode are not the place for that.

jennifer daniel @jenniferdaniel ·

This was presentation really hard to write but what I love about doing talks is that they force me to zoom out of my tiny world and see how we're in the middle of the development of emoji, not at the beginning, not at the end. youtube.com/watch?v=kaucJc…

I also think making yellow peoply people was a mistake emoji-wise. As soon as they have hair, you've lost it. Ok: 🤠 Not ok: 👮 Yellow hands should have been kept to go with the yellow smiley color which I'm pretty sure was chosen because yellow is considered a happy color.

4 likes 0 RTs

Comparisons with the simpsons only arise when you start having peoply people, at which point yep, yellow is white, because there are a few racialized characters on that show who are literally racialized by having their color *accurate* instead of *yellow*.

6 likes 0 RTs

As a long-haired man who loves all colors but purple especially, I default to this emoji 🤦‍♀️ instead of 🤦‍♂️ or 🤦, but I shouldn't have to pick a hair length and shirt color in order to facepalm! That's irrelevant to the meaning of the gesture.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

PSA: I almost always use the woman emoji on here 🤷‍♀️ because she's likes purple and has long hair, like me. We need to talk about underrepresentation of long-haired men in iconography. 🙅‍♀️ ...I'm not actually wanting to open that convo up in its usual form 🤦‍♀️ This tweet = parody.
