Roam stub-pages dissolve the need to finish everything first

Had an xch with @fortelabs 2y ago 👇 where he talks about his need to finish everything he works on, and I lament the intertwingularity. I feel like my roamblog is now basically solving this issue: I instantly create stub-pages while writing publicly. #roamcult @conaw

I now think "I need current block [A] to be finished to be able to build on it [in block B]" is only true in a world where all of the following are true: 1. B makes no sense without A 2. everyone who wants to read B will read A first if you tell them Unfortch, #2 is rarely true.

In practice, what you actually need is the ability to let people know "this term/phrase is a placeholder for something I have more thoughts about" & then to be able to expand on those thoughts as you feel drawn to do so. Roam is fucking perfect for this.

@vgr @QiaochuYuan I'm experimenting with writing publicly on roamresearch.com, and its graph features seem to be solving some core challenges: 1. wanting to be able to reference ideas I haven't written a full post about 2. not wanting to post about something before my post is 💯

The lack of ability to edit on twitter is one of the things that makes it most limiting for this use-case.

Tweets shouldn't be editable: their static, dated, snapshotness is beautiful. (Maybe a 1min grace period for typos) However! Threads *should* be editable! Ability to remove, reorder, and most importantly *insert* tweets.

Referring in one tweet to other thoughts of mine requires me to first tweet those other thoughts, & then I can't edit them easily. In my meta-thread re McGilchrist's brain hemisphere model, I made the first link be to an "intro" ...yet to be written!

@Aryeh___ @divided_brain Haha nah it didn't get published (I was writing it in parallel with the meta-thread) Still planning to come back & finish it at some point, based on this podcast (metalearn.net/podcasts/ml41-…) and this interview 👇 For now, either of those is a great intro🧠 youtube.com/watch?v=fI1ngq…

Anyway, this 2min section starting at about 52mins of the Tiago/Conor interview/debate highlights the shift that Roam is making. Transcript of this section in next tweet. youtu.be/Hw2kJF_kxjE?t=…

Tiago: I'm working really hard to say "the tool doesn't matter." Conor: You were right, 2 years ago. You were completely right 6 months ago that the tool doesn't matter. The thing is, now the tool matters because now there's a better tool! Soundbytes 👆 Full transcript👇
