Why conflicting priority orderings make us do the least important thing

A glitch in prioritization I've seen in myself & others: - by one criterion, A > B > Z - by another, B > A > Z - conclusion: do least important thing Z Why? Removes the tug-of-war. Lack of skill navigating internal conflict means ppl avoid at high cost.

@garybasin @QiaochuYuan @fortelabs I think that when people think they're pursuing happiness, what they actually mean is "I WANT OUT" from the endless internal conflict where nothing they do satisfies all of their strategies. twitter.com/RealtimeAI/sta…

These differing perspectives with different priorities could be all sorts of things: - wanting to please two different people - tension between two self-concepts - uncertainty about risk-tolerance - Near vs Far mode - Fear vs Desire navigation

@cosimia_ (In case it's not clear, my use of desire & fear = shorthand for any sort of "towardsness" & "awayness" experiences, whether thoughts or feelings.) Emotion-wise: towardsness includes desire, lust, curiosity, beauty, play, 😋 awayness includes fear, disgust, contempt, anger, 😨

Or something to do with the profound differences in how the left & right hemispheres of the brain perceive the world.

Most of the corpus callosum (L & R hemisphere connection) is inhibitory connections. I keep going on about internal conflict & I suspect that L↔R interaction represents a lot of that conflict. x.com/Malcolm_Ocean/…

I wrote about a very-similar dynamic in internal game theory years ago, which I described as Vicious Rock Paper Scissors Article: malcolmocean.com/2014/09/viciou…

I've also written extensively about internal conflict from other lenses: "Towards being purpose driven without fighting myself" is also about how sometimes we scale back our ambition to reduce internal friction.
