Most of the people in my bubble know about fluid thinking and metacognition, but how do you reach the people lost in their reactions? Are there mechanisms to open the meta sphere, or is it always an unintentional byproduct?

@ShapesOfEmpathy An introspection-oriented chatbot like @MyReplika/ replika.ai might help with this, especially if it were set up in such a way that people found themselves flirting with it. People tend to adopt thinking habits of those they want to impress. (Unsure this = good plan)

Thread · When willingness to leave a relationship functions as coercion

Replying to Lulie @reasonisfun ·

Counter-intuitive fact about commitments (job, relationship, etc.): Being prepared to leave if things go wrong makes it less likely that they will.

@reasonisfun Mmm, important difference between being committed to caring for your own needs and threatening to ditch the relationship if something makes you uncomfortable. The latter structurally functions as coercion, even if not intended as such.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@SamoBurja On further reflection it was apparent that that non-attachment concept was clearly enabling ways in which I was putting our relationship at stake to get what I wanted. My current sense of integrity is that I wouldn't continue to be in a relationship I was willing to do that to.

7 likes 0 RTs

@reasonisfun I say this as someone who a few years ago would have resonated strongly with your original tweet, and part of my resonance was related to this coercive pattern. AND, I still resonate with a core thing in what you're saying. I'm just wanting to point out that it's complex.

5 likes 0 RTs

@reasonisfun I think part of my situation was that there was an asymmetry in our mutual willingness to leave, and so I was able to say (implicitly) "I'd rather end the relationship than have this conversation" and that meant the convo never happened. (this was somewhat a bluff, somewhat not)

2 likes 0 RTs

@reasonisfun If my partner had been more willing to leave, then they might have been like "fuck this, I'm not persisting through this." NOTE: that from my blindspotted perspective it seemed like things were effectively not going wrong because I was prepared to leave. But it was illusion.

3 likes 0 RTs

@reasonisfun It's equivalent to how if you chew out anyone who gives you feedback you don't like, you will soon get less feedback you don't like. Success! .......err. No feedback means you don't actually find out what's going on.

1 like 0 RTs

@reasonisfun Relatedly, part of the whole point of committing to a relationship such as a marriage is that you have the security to know that if either of you encounters hard times (say a major injury/illness) the other person isn't just going to leave. Yet that may involve unpleasantness.

5 likes 0 RTs

@reasonisfun I find myself wishing I were doing more YesAnding of you here. I do think there's a deep wisdom in what you're saying about BATNAs and not forcing yourself to suffer. I also think there are pathological ways to take this advice, and I want to point at those failure modes.

2 likes 0 RTs

@reasonisfun And related to this: What if you find getting feedback unpleasant? What if something you're doing bothers or hurts someone, and you don't know, and when they tell you you don't enjoy them telling you, but you also don't want THEM to leave?

Lulie @reasonisfun ·

You can just not tolerate unpleasantness. You can demand from life that you only do things you enjoy. (It genuinely won't kill you.)

@Malcolm_Ocean Sounds a lot more like life! Rivalrous folks might be excluded from smaller games, one day at a time — or! They can amend their ways between rounds. But the larger games that take place in the background — it’s evident that we tolerate cohorts of the oncelost rivals.

@HunterBergsma "More like life" is exactly what I was thinking! The idea that you're stuck randomly encountering individuals and coordinating only by fucking each other over or not is... well, becoming more true due to modernism & markets. But not inevitable.

🎃 Mark 👻 🟡⚪️🟣⚫️ @meditationstuff ·

2/ To re-summarize, the market is eating everything in a way that's making it alarmingly more difficult for people to have the social relations they want. It's alarming because social relations used to protect people from the market.

1 like 0 RTs

@HunterBergsma & beyond "not inevitable" it's also not necessarily the most accurate or generative way to model situations even when it does somewhat apply to them. eg you *can* build up some amount of real trust with some companies, and have a real conversation about needs. Worth looking for.

@Malcolm_Ocean Different sense of unpleasant, maybe? Driving your child to the hospital because he fell on some glass is 'unpleasant', but you 110% want to do it. The existence of death is 'unpleasant', but it's not actively coercive. Caring for someone sick or sad is nice when from love.

@reasonisfun Yeah, "different sense of" seems to be a lot of the challenge I find in orienting to your tweets. They seem to sort of assume everybody knows what you're doing with each of the words you use!

2 likes 0 RTs

Replying to Lulie @reasonisfun ·

@Malcolm_Ocean Yes, although not finding out what's going on might be better if it's unpleasant. Depends on the situation. Criticism should always be wanted, or it's coercive education. Getting over whatever's in the way from feedback seems 👍 though.

@reasonisfun Hmmm again I have a feeling of in order for any of this to make sense we'd need to clarify what's meant by "better" and "unpleasant" and "criticism" and "wanted" and "coercive". I'm aware that critical rationalists use "criticism" differently than me: malcolmocean.com/2016/08/decons…

1 like 0 RTs

@reasonisfun Also my experience in this comes from being in a learning context where the whole point is to unlearn the coercive patterns. Which means that necessarily, as part of the learning process, those patterns are going to occur (or we'd be done). How does one respond gracefully?

@Malcolm_Ocean "Problems are inevitable" — despite it being possible to avoid or solve any problem. Sometimes, you may accidentally spill hot coffee on your child. Framing that as "necessarily … part of the learning process" would seem absurd. 👆 I'm trying to use that same intuition here.

@reasonisfun You can avoid coffee, but I would say that necessarily, as part of learning how to parent, you are likely to make choices that cause your child pain/discomfort, if for no other reason than because you live in a world with incomplete information and can't get it all before acting.

1 like 0 RTs

@reasonisfun This is necessarily part of living & learning. However, incidents of pain & discomfort do not have to lead to trauma or be part of coercive dynamics! But they will tend to, if they can't be: - emotionally released (crying, shaking) - talked about (meta-communication)

Why do so many ppl (esp youth) blame capitalism for the world’s ills—+not gov't? Why is capitalism so unpopular as a construct relative to legitimacy of gov't? I hear “capitalism is inherently bad”, but not gov't What pull does gov’t have on ppl that capitalism fails to have?

@eriktorenberg If "govt"="our way of making collective decisions" then there exists no option without govt (including anarchy). Whereas ppl naturally long to live in a world where people aren't commodities => blame capitalism. (Ofc, this can happen under communism too.)

@TheMusingMind @callumflack I basically don't believe it's possible to be anti-something. You need to be for something. _Meaningness_, the book, is weirdly bimodal. It clicks for some readers; others find it nonsensical. I'd like to test a hypothesis from @andy_matuschak: it makes sense to meditators. Do you meditate? Does it make sense? (Please don't answer unless you've attempted to read.)

@Meaningness @andy_matuschak "clicked; no-med" b/c it clicked for me back in 2016 when I hadn't really done much meditation. Probably wouldn't've clicked before 2015. Hard to say exactly what made that difference. My 2016 meaningness deep-dive was inspired by an acute need for more fluid collaboration.

7 likes 0 RTs

@Meaningness @andy_matuschak I'm guessing meaningness clicks iff you've had meta-experience X, which many people get through meditation but not everybody does, and it can also be acquired elsewise. What is X? A glimpse of fluid mode? Some spark of the reality of nebulosity? Experience of limits of system?

@reasonisfun @diviacaroline @Aella_Girl @rothosphere One key difference between what I'm calling "intuition" and "feeling" is: • intuition🧠 (~right neocortex?) is context-sensitive & aware of complex factors • feeling🧠 (amygdala etc) is simple & atemporal ("I feel scared because you spoke loudly like my father did when drunk")

@NeoSomaliana @danlistensto It seems clear that the left neocortex is very much oriented towards closed, complicated systems that can be reasoned about logically. Whereas RH naturally handles complexity & emergence & unknown.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@jondubin @QiaochuYuan @Conaw @HareeshWallis It makes sense to me that the left neocortex would treat everything else as a big blob, because it first & foremost makes a categorical distinction between its coherent articulable worldview (which it trusts at a level before awareness) and, well, everything else.

@Malcolm_Ocean @webdevMason 😄 I think some changes could be good. Theoretically consolidating our options to interact with tweets/ideas, it seems we have 3 main options: 1. Comment 2. Share: retweet, rt w/ comment, q/t, h/t, new app/media/forum 3. Emote: liking, +more = situationally appropriate

@HunterBergsma @webdevMason HT? I've thought a bit about the various kinds of relationships that tweets could have in principle... linear stream, parenthetical/tangent, revision-of-another, footnote/citation, tree, summary of many tweets. Many not at all supported by current twitter

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Another piece on the importance of QTs. But there are like 4 non-existing relationships tweets could have! And the links between apps-for-reading and twitter are still too weak. Including no ability to copy-paste original text as text (because screenshot). x.com/micahtredding/…
