Evaluating additions to SMART goals: present, identity, positive, expansive

some interesting additions to SMART goals from @mcrittenden Present tense – not future tense Identity focused – who you are, not what you do Positive – never set a goal that a dead person can do better than you Expansive – leave room for growth critter.blog/2022/03/30/sma…

Some elements overlap with the CSI Approach that we use in our GCI workshops: eg positive = approach

"CSI Approach" goal-setting framework Challenging - wouldn't happen by default Specific - you'll know when you get there Immediate - goal has next steps Approach-oriented - moving towards, not away

Present tense I'm not 100% sure about this! It seems good for visualizing the target—you want to visualize *being* there—but might amplify pre-success failure by implying you should already be there.

The term "pre-success failure" from @ScottAdamsSays' book is a gem. His related idea that you should have systems and not have goals is absurd. (have both!) Scott cites Olympic athletes as examples. 🤨 Take 3 guesses what goal an Olympic athlete has... 🥇🥈🥉

Identity-focused Also not sure how I feel about this. You need to make sure your goal doesn't conflict with your existing identity, but any change should maybe be more abstract & done up-front directly rather than be the goal itself. eg using this:

I think I may have cracked the code to extremely quick and yet incredibly stable identity change.

Positive Totally on board here. I wrote a whole blog post about this recently. I like "never set a goal a dead person can do better"—you need to focus on your living system and how it's embodying the goal, live. malcolmocean.com/2022/02/toward…

Expansive Yeah this one's also good: not just a single target but a whole desirable region. Spacious.

Fwiw, here's the definition of goal that the @CompliceGoals app & the workshops use, which is also quite spacious:

Goal = recognizable desired state in the future, that causes you to act differently in the present so as to realize it. If... 🛣️ no recognizable state = "trajectory" 😣 not desired = "should" 👀 not future = "regret" ☁️ no action = "dream" 🤠 actions just for show = "signalling"
