are there ways to build trust that don't involve consistency?

@gptbrooke often "trust" is shorthand for what I call "meta-trust", ie “trust that whatever issues might arise between us, we can talk about things in a way that is workable for both of us and leads to issues getting resolved to our mutual satisfaction in good time.” malcolmocean.com/2021/09/non-na…

@gptbrooke understanding the generators of something / what it's made of / what it's capable of I don't need to test it even once, let alone a dozen times, to know that I'm capable of walking down a street in Berlin. I've never been to Berlin but I know my walking skill generalizes.

@gptbrooke for interpersonal stuff, this involves seeing why the person did what they did, thereby having a sense of how they'd act in similar & different situations their explanation must feel consistent tho—"this checks out [with what I know of them & the world]"

i'd love to hear if other men around here have similar experiences as the OP it doesn't really resonate with me (ie. women are not cold and mirthless towards me, i do experience intimacy in male friendships) i wonder if it's possible that OP is experiencing transphobia here

@mechanical_monk I've been pretty good at vibing with everybody since high school (although before that I was aloof nerd kid). I have many friends with whom I express lots of affection, physically & "I love you" etc. They currently skew more male, though at times it's been the other way I think.

@mechanical_monk I don't doubt that OP is experiencing something real but there are absolutely ways of being and pockets of culture where something completely different is possible.

Thread · Jason Mraz's 'I Won't Give Up' as a shadow statement · 13 of 14 tweets

I just found out Jason Mraz's song I Won't Give Up, a favorite of mine for a decade, was almost certainly written about Tristan Prettyman, who he suddenly broke up with while they were engaged. Sounds surprising, but we might ask... why did he need to write that song?

QC @QiaochuYuan ·

every statement a person makes about themselves, their lives, the nature of reality etc. has a shadow statement. in order to find it worthwhile to say a thing you must simultaneously be aware of the possibility of it being false, or else it wouldn't even occur to you to say

11 likes 0 RTs

One writes a song called I Won't Give Up when one is faced with the seriously possibility of, well, *giving up*. Now, all relationships have their challenging moments, but some have a lot more precariousness than others.

5 likes 0 RTs

I'm about to talk about other people's relationships, and I want to note that even though these people have wikipedia pages, I feel in some sense I'm relating to them as fellow singer-songwriters, writers about love & relationship, & journeyers of the human spirit. Not celebs.

4 likes 0 RTs

Turns out Tristan's album Cedar+Gold is almost entirely about the breakup with Mraz. Glass Jar in particular reflects on their engagement. I think they were both in denial about the fragility of their relationship. The wind doesn't just shift. Something must have felt off.

5 likes 0 RTs

But this excerpt (from the same song!) aptly calls Mraz out—his whole 2012 album doesn't acknowledge the breakup of mid-2011 whatsoever.

That album (Love Is A Four-Letter Word) is one of my all-time favorites, and has a lot of beautiful stuff on it. it's got I Won't Give Up but no Listen To Yourself If Something Feels Off or If It's Almost A Fit It's Not A Fit or The Courage to Leave

Now, even if you had a song called "We're Gonna Make It" or "I'm So Committed To You" (ie not making the "don't hit the tree" error) it would still have that shadow statement quality—why does it feel so important to say?

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

As with choice, my general sense with "commitment" is that if you're tempted to commit to something or say "I'm committed to X" then what this actually means if you're reifying an identification with one part of you, in opposition to some other part of you that you don't trust.

9 likes 0 RTs

Mraz, interviewed when the album came out, said this about it, which... sure. One way to tell the narrative. > regardless of what happens in this relationship, I don’t have to give up on loving this person, or loving myself

4 likes 0 RTs

Although I guess indeed in the bridge he does say "and in the end, you're still my friend", which does imply... something? About a breakup? Maybe? 🧐 But idk, the message of the song still feels like one of staying together, not of recognizing the need to move on.

She concludes: > maybe somewhere, someone will read this and feel a little less alone, a little less scared, or a bit more brave to speak up for what their heart is telling them. It's easier to talk about what's working than what's not working. I'm working on this myself.

Intend (12/100 threads) @IntendApp ·

"CSI Approach" goal-setting framework Challenging - wouldn't happen by default Specific - you'll know when you get there Immediate - goal has next steps Approach-oriented - moving towards, not away

1 like 0 RTs

Present tense I'm not 100% sure about this! It seems good for visualizing the target—you want to visualize *being* there—but might amplify pre-success failure by implying you should already be there.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

The term "pre-success failure" from @ScottAdamsSays' book is a gem. His related idea that you should have systems and not have goals is absurd. (have both!) Scott cites Olympic athletes as examples. 🤨 Take 3 guesses what goal an Olympic athlete has... 🥇🥈🥉

1 like 0 RTs

Identity-focused Also not sure how I feel about this. You need to make sure your goal doesn't conflict with your existing identity, but any change should maybe be more abstract & done up-front directly rather than be the goal itself. eg using this:

Trinley Goldenberg @mattgoldenberg ·

I think I may have cracked the code to extremely quick and yet incredibly stable identity change.

1 like 0 RTs

Positive Totally on board here. I wrote a whole blog post about this recently. I like "never set a goal a dead person can do better"—you need to focus on your living system and how it's embodying the goal, live. malcolmocean.com/2022/02/toward…

Expansive Yeah this one's also good: not just a single target but a whole desirable region. Spacious.

Fwiw, here's the definition of goal that the @CompliceGoals app & the workshops use, which is also quite spacious:

@meditationstuff too much to unpack here tbh, but couple things: 1) i think the buddha's idea of happiness was not a positive, but reductive, equivalent to "not suffering" or like greek "ataraxia" 2) the world is a tough place. You can try your best to avoid getting hurt, but it won't work--

@anikrisn @meditationstuff I've heard Nirvana (I think) translated as something more like freedom or liberation, which could be "freedom from suffering" but could also be "freedom to ____" tho "suffering" can also be translated as just "overwhelm"

when I hear trance music, I'm like: there's nothing there! it's all the same! gotta admit, I've been pretty judgmental of this, treating it as just bad rather than good-in-its-own-way. I once got into the trance, randomly (sober!) idk why it happened! it was decent.

7 likes 0 RTs

Maybe 2 things here tho? I feel like most trance dancers *are* submitting to the music, & they're not doing anything interesting because the music isn't (tho it may feel good) This is different from eg breakdancing, where the beats are minimalist & the dancers do moves on top

I feel sorta vindicated by this tweet (someone who used to like Type 1 dancing talking about how they don't find it compelling anymore) which seems to prove my point about Type 1 being lesser. which is not to say you shouldn't enjoy it if you do

Leona @dismaien ·

6/ I used to need that constriction because I wasn't able to truly let go, to just be and feel. Now I am. This may be the first time I genuinely felt like club culture doesn't have much more to give or teach me.

regarding flow states, Csikszentmihalyi makes the case that flow is when difficulty & skill are well-matched so I am confused about how people are getting into flow states doing the same thing over and over. dramatically narrowed awareness? 🤔🤔🤔 plz explain

Type 2 music is my JAM. It feels conversational and interesting. I like it best when it's right on the edge of my ability to notice patterns & anticipate what's coming next, although complex music I know well has the different puzzle of expressing every little detail.

4 likes 0 RTs

Here's an example of a song from my Dancy playlist. it's hard for me *not* to dance, when a song like this comes on. I've just gotta move! But I also dance to anything complex, including Bebop once, which got me a stern scolding from the guy playing it. youtube.com/watch?v=O5ds72…

2 likes 0 RTs

But also it doesn't have to be crazy & wild. I have had beautiful & ecstatic dances to minimalist songs like this, where I'm pouring every ounce of my attention into manifesting each syllable into the right tiny movements. youtube.com/watch?v=safO91…

1 like 0 RTs

Yeah, this is interesting. One obvious factor is that the trance stuff makes more sense on certain drugs, and I'm usually dancing sober. Ecstatic Dance, which I love (eg 5 Rhythms) is also conventionally sober.

4 likes 0 RTs

I'd also be curious to experience a context that helps people learn how to enjoy doing Type 1 dancing to Type 1 music! (sober) Mostly I've just been annoyed that scenes aren't playing something I want to dance to, and nobody has offered an on-ramp into the trance state! 👯

3 likes 0 RTs

I've been dancing expressively & interpretively since I was a wee tot, so idk what it's like to not know how—or feel comfortable, which is half of it. But I do feel like I could show people! Start small: pick one body part & one musical element to express, & try it out 🦵

3 likes 0 RTs

I think it's important to respect that people enjoy what they enjoy and ALSO to respect that people don't enjoy what they don't enjoy And someone might be able to *learn* how to enjoy something else, but that doesn't happen automatically—it does need an on-ramp.

@Aella_Girl yes, that's exactly it. i think we even briefly talked about this at the castle a few months before this blog post, only back then i wasn't fully able to let go into type 2 yet, thus preferred type 1. this also seems like what you were able to transmit in your dance course!

@dismaien @Aella_Girl I wrote a whole thread about your article because it resonated so much

For the record, ecstatic dance to me feels like somewhere beautifully in between these two types, in a sense. It can be incredibly expressive, and also incredibly trancy. However, the music always develops. It's not the same beat for hours, but a wave that builds & crashes.

Thread · "Sem": a neologism to replace think and feel

Sem: a tentative proposal for a verb to replace "think" & "feel" and help avoid mind-body dualism in daily utterances. "I sem that X" = "I think/feel that X" "I'm semming" = "I'm thinking/feeling"

16 likes 0 RTs

I got started semming about this awhile back by wondering about the potential relationship, etymologically or morphologically, between: - "seems" - "semantic" seems they have unrelated roots—so close though!

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

> (“belief” is a very problematic concept. latent and actualized bodily anticipation is a bit better, sometimes…) it’s less about what you say, less about even what you think, and more about how everything preflectively *seems* —@meditationstuff meditationstuff.wordpress.com/2020/05/27/epi…

2 likes 0 RTs

I've long wanted a word that could be used like "thinking" or "feeling" but had connotations more of meaning-making instead. "It seems to me" is close but doesn't lend itself to replacing "I think ____" "suppose", "reckon", "figure", "interpret", "construe" ...? too many steps

1 like 0 RTs

Korzybski proposed "semantic reactions" (which he abbreviates "s.r.") which is exactly the thing I'm looking for—as I recall, it may have been what inspired the search—except WAY too cumbersome. "I'm having a semantic reaction that ____" 🧐

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@StephenPiment @Meaningness I recently spent a few hours w/ the original source (Korzybski's Science & Sanity) and it gave me the impression that while current zeitgeist has partially just digested this insight, there are fundamental pieces missing. Most people are full of confusions that TMINTT negates.

1 like 0 RTs

Might need to coin a new word to intertwingle thinking & feeling: what about "sem"? I sem that might work actually! sem, v. to have a semantic reaction sem, v.transitive to have a semantic reaction in relation to (but you can also just sem of it as think+feel) #neologizing

2 likes 1 RT

I'm valuing having "sem" defined by reference to "semantic reaction" although of course a formal definition—especially of a neologism—is unlikely to capture the in-practice-meaning of a word.

1 like 0 RTs

Yet I also sem that if Korzybski had been developing general semantics not in the 30s but *after* cybernetics & systems theory emerged in the 60s, then he would have used a term other than "reaction", which feels sort of behaviorist—stimulus & response.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Why are subject-object shifts hard? An intriguing answer: "The peculiar elusive relationship between the subject & the object of the act of cognition [is one of] …total interdependence in which relative stability is achieved & mantained through the circularity of interaction"

2 likes 0 RTs

I'm thus inclined to suggest "semantic interaction" as a replacement for "semantic reaction", which will probably go without contest as almost nobody was using "semantic reaction" in the first place. So then: sem, v. to have a semantic interaction

1 like 0 RTs

according to this site, Korzybski actually found himself later regretting his own use of the term "semantic" (people took it too narrowly—just linguistic, not about meaning-making) stevenlewis.info/gs/sr.htm

1 like 0 RTs

I've noticed while drafting this: "think" & "feel" get phrased slightly differently! > you can also just sem of it as think+feel (clearly replacing "think of it") > you can also just sem it as think+feel (more like replacing "feel it") it's much more intimate without the "of"!

3 likes 0 RTs

I'm semming about how we typically ask: "how do you feel?" vs "what do you think?" Feels to me like either could be used with "sem", and they'd carry different meanings: "how do you sem?" → process, withness "what do you sem?" → content, aboutness

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

One model I've found myself dancing with over the past few years is called More than Cool Reason: "Withness-thinking or "systemic thinking" and "thinking *about* systems" Withness and aboutness are two very different modes of thinking! PDF: lchc.ucsd.edu/mca/Mail/xmcam…

3 likes 0 RTs

The presence of these two meanings invites the awareness that we can't be semming *about* something, without semming about it *in a particular way*. There's no what without a how. Everything is in relation. This is what Korzybski was pointing at w/ "semantic reaction"

1 like 0 RTs

A related sem I've had is about the difference between believing & perceiving. If our opinions differ, maybe one of us is wrong. If our perspectives differ, well, we're probably looking from different angles.

@Malcolm_Ocean what do you think? is it a superset? i’d argue there is a strong divide between self proclaimed feelers and thinkers that needs bridging for either word to have much meaning. both are timid to approach the unknown and develop an intuition for the energetic intent of either word

@becomingbabyman yeah totally and I sem there's value to *also* having the words "think" and "feel" for when we mean something more specific!

Or just move and hope that all parts eventually catch up?

@uthmanzi @nosilverv you can't satisfy the parts on the level that they have the conflict, but they're generated by something more abstract and if you keep going up, eventually the answer becomes clear & things don't feel conflicted (doesn't mean either original goal met)

Fighting = trying to achieve different ends in a way that contradicts. eg a person who is late driving somewhere: 2 high-level goals "friends not mad at me", "don't get arrested" ↳ 2 medium-level goals "don't be late", "don't speed" ↳ 2 contradicting 🚗 speeds: 86mph, 60mph

people are asking “no way, that rare?” or “isnt it loads of ppl?” so here are some of my rough parameters: 1. written/published at >100 blogposts or equivalent (youtube vids, podcasts, whatever) 2. introduced >100 people to each other + organises social events regularly

quoting @visakanv: 1. Nerds (people for whom curiosity is a dominant drive) are rare to begin with. Let’s say 5-10% 2. Friendly nerds and ambitious nerds tend to be broadly assumed to be separate camps, different and at odds 3. Friendly ambitious nerds are (seems to me) radical and ~0.01% rare

@visakanv I haven't quite gotten into as much hosting as I intend, but I do hub directly & indirectly. I was hanging out today with 4 people, all pairings of whom had met each other because of me on some level or another (and one had met me through my blog). Extreme for me but not wild.

Arbutus Tree @aphercotropist ·

We dont use "truth" much in everyday speech. The most common I've seen is very similar to agreement "that's true". But it's subtly different, and that difference is the withdrawal of the self. There is an "I" in "I agree" but not in "that's true"

@AskYatharth Yeah, not recognizing that this stuff is a metaphor is pretty sloppy thinking. Even the notion of the brain *having* software that runs on its "hardware"—these may not be so separable in the brain as in a computer! Structural reorganization.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@AskYatharth @nickcammarata @limitoftruth "Brains are literally computers" is a huge map-territory error. Nothing is literally anything else. All communication is structural and metaphorical. You need to specify in what ways things are alike or different, or you will make confusions in your communications.

@connerdelights @prerationalist the hotdog hands is impossible tho like, it's not an actual alternative 1. if shit diverged thousands of years ago, none of these people existed 2. neither would pianos as such 3. no amount of quantum bs could make those hands evolutionarily fit

as for the "associated deep problem"... the surface level of the problem is the classic "solve human coordination" the deep level is best pointed at with a koan:

The paradox I'm currently in love with: 1. existing culture is fucked up in ways I'll collectively call "A" 2. "A" is trying to fuck you up 3. "A" = "people trying to protect from being fucked up by A" 4. thus to shift "A" to "B", one must protect against "A" without protecting

I have a psychoanalyst and she barely talks beyond asking me questions (very little commentary) but being able to be totally open about all my “worst” thoughts has been super helpful. with people in your life there’s often pressure to frame things in a “relatable” way

@noampomsky yeah it's possible to make a community where people can share their "worst" thoughts (I've been in two) and have them welcomed and received and this serves *that* role of therapy better than a therapist but this is not most communities! and it's not straightforward to get there

1 like 1 RT

@noampomsky meanwhile, there's at least one other role for a therapist, which is to strategically uncover emotional learnings/generalizations so they can be updated (a skill everyone should have some of, but some people (therapists & coaches) should master) context: lesswrong.com/posts/i9xyZBS3…

1 like 0 RTs

@noampomsky also also also a community or therapist that validates all of your thoughts is NOT a substitute for learning how to self-validate all of your thoughts can help bootstrap, but you get messes & blurtings when people feel the need to be received in order to feel valid

@nickcammarata @connerdelights @prerationalist maybe... but I think in the rocks scene they could arguably be communicating using the rest of the multiverse while in some sense being "there" and when the rocks are moving/changing that's no different than all of the other lady gaga costume changes

i'm developing a clearer mental image of what the global FAN network looks like. at least one erasmus/mersenne human switchboard in every major city, who's each connected to local nerd clusters. in parallel, same for each major interest group, subculture and so on

@visakanv fascinated by how obvious this seems in retrospect and yet it indeed seems like you're seeing it with a level of clarity you hadn't seen before

it's useful to have clarity re: who are the bridge-nodes between clusters, and who are central nodes within dense clusters. they don't have to be the same people. they just need to know each other. here's an example of a chain of interaction that I want to replicate 1000x

@visakanv I think you mean that's the chain of interaction that you want 1000 people to each replicate 1000× 😜 but yeah

Ok, here’s an experiment in paying attention to what I want to see more of, @visakanv style I’m gonna write a thread where each tweet is a headline, and then I (or you!) will reply with the best threads that already exist for that headline. Ready?

@utotranslucence @visakanv awesome idea! then you (or someone!) can make another version of the thread that's a meta-thread where the best thread for the headline is QT'd there in the main thread (or in cases where there are lots, maybe a meta-meta-thread)

@Malcolm_Ocean yeah i'm sure i've talked about this before and you can find old notes, tweets, blogposts etc where i've already said this, but vaguely what i was sort of tripping on was that I was vaguely gesturing at "10x FANs worldwide" without being precise about the different graph roles

@visakanv yup yup and only some FANs will actually want to be switchboards (for scenes or cities) others want to be subject-matter experts, or mediators, or <many other roles to be discovered>

Kind of mindblowing that alchemists naïvely tried to turn lead into gold for centuries and then it turned out to be a perfectly reasonable (if expensive) thing to do in a nuclear reactor

@etiennefd is it particularly reasonable with lead in particular? if so I'd be fascinated to know how they came up with that particular idea for input

one thing that makes it feel slightly easier to unfollow people is having a list "used to follow" that I can put those people on. haven't used it for anything yet but if I find myself going "oh there was that guy... who..." then maybe it'll be nice / just for archival purposes

5 likes 0 RTs

if you're someone I unfollowed, that doesn't mean I don't like you—keep doing you! focus *your* energy on what *you* want to see (well, I did unfollow a couple people I didn't like, but I already didn't like them back when I followed them so it doesn—don't change the subject!)

@brunowinck but also don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good it's really not that much work to manually add someone to a list before unfollowing

@the_wilderless as OP: there's definitely plenty of overlap in our work, and it all feeds the evolution of human consciousness

something very neat about this imagery not sure I agree with the "along with" premise exactly but yeah, finding your own voice that also blends is exactly the thing

Matt Jugo @Jeanvaljean689 ·

Intrigued by the notion that nobody learns to sing, only to "sing along with" And that, therefore, what we're really talking about, when we speak of "learning to sing", is "learning to differentiate/individuate" (Finding a voice that is "with" but also "separate")

when I think about human superorganisms, I very much think about maximizing integration & differentiation at the same time
