Two goal-setting workshops on the same weekend

I have at least personal 2 facepalms from this announcement, maybe 3. 🤦🤦‍♂️🤦‍♀️ I'd actually be stoked to attend Tiago's workshop, but I'll busy that weekend (Jan 9-10)... running my own goal-setting workshop 😆 This was almost averted... 1/

If you'd like some guidance in setting your own goals (and identifying your own windows of opportunity) for 2021, join me next weekend for our two-day virtual workshop The Annual Review: learn.fortelabs.co/p/the-annual-r…

quoting @fortelabs: New free post on the Praxis blog: Windows of Opportunity: A Fleeting Chance at the Impossible https://t.co/25bR9SeVwL This is the most important leap forward in goal-setting since SMART goals were introduced in 1981, courtesy of @ec_anderson

Last year, I did a thread talking about the remarkable similarities between my workshop and one that @fortelabs was hosting, and wondered if they'd based theirs on ours (not to their knowledge!) 2/

Similarities • virtual workshop • Zoom video call • hours of Slack-based Q&A etc • time for private reflection • group accountability • much more course content than you can actually use during this one event ...and of course the purpose: review last year & plan next year

Anyway, we concluded "let’s coordinate next year to not do it the exact same weekend!" but I'd kinda forgotten about that in November, when our team decided for the first time to try doing *three* weekends (Dec 19,20, Jan 2,3, Jan 9,10) 3/

@Malcolm_Ocean I usually try not to replicate what’s already being done, since I’m starting from scratch on something you’ve already learned a lot about. But let’s coordinate next year to not do it the exact same weekend!

A few weeks later, I remembered that old exchange and thought "well, maybe they're not running it this year, after all, Tiago had a kid, and it was an experiment last year, so maybe it'll just be fine" but I guess in general they tend to arrange the event later in the season! 4/

But it's all good! While the events are very similar in some ways, Tiago is probably mostly marketing to his huge email list, of people who are happy to go to his event and were never gonna hear about ours. 5/

It’s harder than you expect to get someone to subscribe to your email list, but easier than you expect to sell them a product once they do Gaining a person’s attention is 9/10 of making a sale

And we do a bunch of marketing in our own private channels / on Twitter—and in the latter context, competition can actually be helpful for everyone! 6/

You guys are savages 🤣 @fortelabs @Conaw #roamcult "Conor and I hatched a plan: we would start an online "beef" that would attract some attention to the fledgling PKM (Personal Knowledge Management) space. I never could gave predicted how successful that beef would be."

(I'm not very good at beefing though 😛...I have an irrepressible tendency to just try to overtly make positive-sum things happen, as exhibited in the image & QT below, as well as in this whole thread.) 7/

Wanting to write a thread on the larger meta-vision I have that inspired me to make this move. Initially wrote this in response to @andy_matuschak's response "Y'all, this attitude is rad", but wanted it to be a top-level thread because it's important and stands on its own. twitter.com/Malcolm_Ocean/…

Anyway, my main recommendation is to pick one of the workshops and go to it. Either will blow your mind and set you up to totally rock 2021. I'll try to sketch out in a few tweets why you might pick 1 or the other if you're considering both! 8/

The content of one vs the other might seem like an obvious reason to pick, but I can't say much about it since I don't know their content & by definition would be inclined to favor mine. Main question is which will be the better container for you personally. So... 9/

Come to Goal-Crafting Intensive if: • you want lots of direct private chat coaching from many coaches, vs a bit of support from 2 • you prefer a $25 ticket + PWYW over $299 up front • your schedule fits better with one 5h event on Jan 2,3,9, or 10 10/ complice.co/event/plan2021…

Head over to @fortelabs & @david_perell's The Annual Review if you want to: • immerse yourself for the entire Jan 9-10 weekend • interact a lot with other participants during the event • focus on a big picture review (vs goals+plans+systems) 11/11 learn.fortelabs.co/p/the-annual-r…
