Thread · Culturally constructed emotions and inventing new emotional language
Had heard about @LFeldmanBarrett's work before; this article piqued my interest on a different level hearing how's affected her own speech: > instead of saying “I’m scared,” she blurted out: “I’m experiencing high arousal from uncertainty.” theguardian.com/books/2020/sep…
This assessment—that emotions are culturally constructed—seems to have a sort of trivially true meaning, which I think I'd already integrated. It also implies something much bolder: the capacity to consciously construct entirely new emotions as part of culture change 😮
This is, as I see it, part of what Barrett is doing in the excerpt quoted above. This could seem like just deconstruction, which is also accurate, but I think it's still constructive, because by using the phrase "high arousal from uncertainty", in the moment, it gains meaning.
On a different level, I think the modern meme environment does this unconsciously already, just... less verbally. But having a specific image/gif/emoji handle for a feeling *is* different than just having associated gestures. I think sometimes I *feel* nathan_fillion.gif
This is like how sign language differs from pantomime—the former has actual signs, with precise shared meanings. It's symbolic, rather than directly trying to evoke something. The gif itself kind of does both, but "nathan_fillion.gif" is a sign (to those in the know).
There's a lot of richness in the historical feelings, and I think it's really important not to disown the meaning that they hold. I discovered when I learned Bio-Emotive from @DougTataryn that I had repressed all sorts of feelings that consciously I thought didn't make sense.
This included feelings where I had reasons for saying they didn't make sense (such as "shame" or "worthlessness") as well as just feelings where implicitly I was constructing my life in ways seemingly incompatible with those feelings (such as "sadness" or "panic")
When I've facilitated the Bio-Emotive NEDERA process for ppl who grew up speaking a different language, they've often found phrases that don't resonate nearly as much in English as they do in the natural language of their younger selves whose memories they're working with.
This is entirely compatible with Barrett's top-level claim that emotions are culturally constructed—in fact it supports it greatly—but it suggests to me that we might want to take great care when deliberately reframing our emotions. Meanings are sacred, &
This has me a bit concerned about the account of how Barrett is working with her daughter in this excerpt from the article. The sigh and the "are you happy?" reveal a tension from attempted overwriting. (This still seems better than most parenting, tho that's not saying much.)

For reframes that support integrity, try on the new phrasing gently: "Hmm, I feel uncertainty & high arousal" Allow yourself to say "No, I feel ANXIOUS!" You don't get to tell others how they feel or what it's okay to feel. Your intellect doesn't get to tell *you* how you feel.
Neuroplasticity is a thing—the brain can change, and retain changes. So I'm bullish (is that a feeling? hm🤔) about reculturing with a better feeling-toolkit. A feelkit. I think that's both worthwhile & possible. *And* it requires upgrading the existing one, not overwriting it.
In this case, that means bringing your old words & meanings into dialogue with new concepts, whether those are the neuroscience concepts that Barrett promotes, or concepts from something like Buddhism. And both have lots to offer, which is exciting!
eg I've been reading Spectrum of Ecstasy: The Five Wisdom Emotions of Vajrayana Buddhism, and it is pointing at how certain contracted feelings are clouded expressions of certain expansive feelings, eg anger & clarity. Learning this ontology requires *feeling* its truth.
And in the meantime, and always, it is okay to feel exactly how you feel right now, and to name that feeling however it wants to be named.

@avagadasa Yeah, there's a need to differentiate between: - world as you experience it - creating shared narrative & situational assessment If your system experiences a feeling of abandonment & that word resonates, important to validate that internally. Not usually helpful interpersonally.
@mattgoldenberg @LFeldmanBarrett Mmm, appreciating you sharing this 🙏 Curious what gave you that sense initially! I'm re-reading this here and not feeling clear what it would be (unless you just mean my overall resonance with what Barrett is saying).

@ben_r_hoffman Really well put, Ben. The memes are defending other memes, not the people themselves.
@BlackForestBoi It seems to me that if this happens, things have gone horribly wrong: the politicians & media aren't serving ppl. Snarky idea: all of the candidates & debate hosts get sentenced to 2 years community service and election is re-run with all new candidates & debate hosts.
@BlackForestBoi As stated, this is not a real suggestion, to be clear; the incentives would go some weird-ass sideways direction that we can't even guess. But it points at something important.
@BlackForestBoi I agree with your point tho—this is the obvious issue with such a system: it explicitly allows for a possible outcome of "nobody is elected". OT1H, if all of the candidates are shit, this seems like the appropriate result! 💩 OTOH, someone needs to run the govt in meantime 😬
@BlackForestBoi This could be a situation where… say this were instituted for the US Presidency, and this result happened (which it probably would this year 😔). Succession etc would give the seat to the Speaker of the House, who presumably still exists. Not ideal, but vaguely reasonable.
@BlackForestBoi To be clear, I'm not suggesting that candidates who don't get 66% minimum acceptance would always get this sentence, but if *nobody* does then this is actually everybody's responsibility because it means that they probably spent too much time slinging mud rather than real talk.
@BlackForestBoi Which inspires me to think that there could actually also be some other red flag situation that occurs if only one candidate gets above 50% approval rating, as it probably means they've been playing dirty and making their opponent seem evil. (Am I rn? 🤔)
@TomLisankie @Conaw Also it's not the same thing but I found myself thinking you might appreciate this:
@RobertHaisfield It's nuts. Daniel Schmachtenberger is working on creating a nonprofit news outlet that analyzes and synthesizes a wide range of perspectives, steelmanning & critiquing and trying to sort out what's known/unknown, accessible yet deep. Cool talk about it:
@BlackForestBoi Agreed. Pulling the text onto twitter: > "If you feel a combination of outrage/scared, and very certain with a strong enemy hypothesis orientation, you've likely be captured by somebody's narrative warfare and you're thinking its your own thinking. 1/2
@BlackForestBoi > That will, even if you win at a local battle, whatever tech you use to win. Social tech, info tech. The other side will reverse engineer and come back. You're just escalating an arms race and not moving toward shared sensemaking and coordination." — Daniel Schmachtenberger 2/2
@acesounderglass Awhile ago I thought of a distinction like: Surprise is if a 1-1000 random number generator outputs some specific number you guess beforehand. Confusion is if the random number generator doesn't output a number at all. The phrasing still feels off but there's something there.
@TrungTPhan @BlackForestBoi Yeah it's not obvious to me that this isn't worse than the existing incentives. The main issue here is that there are too many people in various media roles to hold them all responsible, and punishment doesn't really work well anyway (barely at all for psychopaths actually).
@wgalyean Oh huh! That feels to me to be a different question entirely—has more to do with whether you have a 1yr use for the money or a 2yr use, or something like that.
@Human__Age @DougTataryn At a high level, what I would say is: 1. the original triune brain model is clearly oversimplified 2. it's really important to remember that our limbic and hindbrains are completely up to date, not static reptile modules from 1M yrs ago. Just as evolved as prefrontal cortex.
@robertskmiles @corywong Totally. They fucking GET it. Have you watched the Madison Square Garden concert yet? Fucking 💯 youtube.com/watch?v=rv4wf7…
@BlackForestBoi Hm? Not sure I understand what you're saying. If it's "making a higher bar for getting elected while allowing the existingly elected people to stay in power seems autocratic" then I'm with you! Maybe: Step 1: ranked voting Step 2: minimum 50% acceptance Step 3: increase
@BlackForestBoi Not that anything we're discussing here is remotely close to what seems possible in terms of reforms to existing systems.
@Neats29 You should always phrase things as first person experience rather than as "you should do this". 😉…contrast with… I usually tend to phrase things as being about my own experience rather than prescriptively, and I find that helps.
@Neats29 Honestly a lot of the time I just aim for "enthusiastically tell someone about something that will also excite them". That's not advice at all. I didn't really know what Conor would do with seeing VV & GC, I just guessed he'd be interested and find it valuable.
@Human__Age @DougTataryn 3. "Limbic language", experientially, is CLEARLY a thing. Whether it maps exactly onto limbic system matters but what else would it map onto? LL = 1st person/embodied, present tense, usually relatively simple feeling words, evoking (vs discussing reasonably at arm's length)
@_StevenFan Say more? Constructivism taking over affective neurosci? I think issue here is failure to disambiguate between the raw circuits which don't exactly have a "meaning", and all other feelings, which have an interpretive element, and are thus constructed.
@_StevenFan @DougTataryn does a great rough job on this front by disambiguating feelings vs emotions: feelings = everything from "worthless" to "alone" to "connected" to "betrayed" emotions = raw bio circuits, in Doug's model 😀☹️😡😨 but could include Panksepp 🧐😏😱 etc plus maybe 🤢😮

@BlackForestBoi @RobertHaisfield Yeah! And great point re kicking off revolution. Yeah, similar to how other apps are getting on the backlink train, this might force news outlets that *want* to be at least remotely nonpartisan to up their game.

Me in defense of misattributed quotes as being like as cover versions of songs—themselves valuable for what they evoke.
The standard version of this being done consciously is not a cover but a parody:

But it's like, there's actually kind of an art form here; the issue is that in order to really properly evoke it, you essentially have to lie/bullshit.
I guess that's not true if the quote is sufficiently famous. And then you can do all sorts of other stuff with it too, actually, beyond creatively misattributing it…
Attribution Art. Hit QT on this tweet, then in the body of your tweet, tweet out a quote (could be famous or something you or your friend said) with it attributed to someone else (could be someone you know, a friend on twitter, or a famous person) to play with the effect.
@trenteatspeople @SusieusMaximus @J_Salzer Kind of like how I didn't actually rip a bong before tweeting this 👇 —bong rip is a tweet genre. So is "my friend casually dropped this mindblowing comment on me"
@trenteatspeople @SusieusMaximus @J_Salzer Anyway, this has inspired me to make a thread suggesting people misattribute quotes on purpose as a form of art.

@katarinag @sashachapin Just came across this and am curious how the experiment went / is going! (My curiosity is more than idle; I've been recently thinking about the power of coaching relationships as part of friendships & communities, and idk the context here but this seems relevant.)
@coponder You might be interested in DSchmacht's Consilience Project; aimed at fixing this.

@ciphergoth @coponder @CloneOfSnow A moment of silence. We could clone the snow we wish to see in the world! But yeah, it was not a sloppy endeavor, by any means.
@coponder Mmm, reminds me of when I pondered the question "what do I want the underlying message to be that people receive from the Complice app?" QT below is what arose for me at the time, but your tweet could also be an answer!
Creating software is doubly-advantageous. First, it's just a super fucking useful skill. Second, since almost all of the tools I use are software, knowing how it's created helps me understand why it functions (or dysfunctions) the way that it does, and to guess hidden features.
@m_ashcroft Goes way back… - HTML via neopets tutorial age 12 - ActionScript (Flash) making game age 13 - CSS & JavaScript & PHP as indie web dev age 14 - Java in highschool CS class - C++ & datastructures in uni - Android as software intern - various side projects & internships - COMPLICE
@m_ashcroft In basically all of these cases, I was always building something, and I highly recommend that as a way to learn.
@m_ashcroft On which note, I'm serious when I say complice.co is a major item on that list. I would say a majority of my software engineering training came from Complice, though I definitely didn't *not* know how to code when I started.

Crowdsourcing a deeper meaning: what is therapy? Not just "what happens at a therapist's office," though it could be there. Or alone in the woods, or with a shaman or friend. What does it mean to say someone experienced effective therapy?
Thread · Two meanings of "therapy" and the licensing racket
"therapy" is doing a tricksy ambiguity 1. therapy = "go see someone registered as a therapist" (may not help, or retraumatize) 2. therapy = "untangling your stuff, particularly via therapeutic reconsolidation process" by defn #2, @visakanv's DMs may actually just *be* therapy
Meanwhile, by definition #2, it's entirely possible to *go to a therapist and not get therapy*. Not dissimilar to how a mechanic might fail to repair your car, some product you buy is not what it says on the tin, or court might have a injust show trial, etc.
(Defn #2 needs to be expanded on in order to actually be useful. It's just a placeholder, to point out that there's an actual process that can happen-or-not. Expanding on defn is out of scope for this thread you're reading now, but check out over here👇)
From this perspective, someone who went to a therapist and didn't get therapy is a customer who got ripped off, and telling them they got therapy is institutionalized gaslighting.
Therapy boards have got a nice jerky circular regulatory racket with defn #1. Defining "therapy" as "what therapists do" implies: 🤷♀️ if it didn't work for you, that's your problem. can't say it "wasn't therapy" 🙅♀️ if you're not a licensed therapist, can't do therapy
It makes sense to me that there be ways to verify who's gotten which kinds of training, but the idea that some people are legally qualified to help and others aren't is second only in absurdity to the idea that all "therapists" provide the same service. </hyperbole>
I don't know what the solution looks like, but one piece is encouraging people to trust their own sense of what works for them 🙏 This is, however, the very self-trust that schools traumatize out of people, by telling you they know how you should learn.
Giving adequate therapy to the world is a major bootstrapping process, involving both better frameworks (like Emotional Coherence & memory reconsolidation - see Unlocking the Emotional Brain) and also increasing numbers of people able to guide other people to & through it.
Also bootstrapping because in order for your brain to fully unlearn coercive culture, you need a real experience that something else is available, which is only possible to the extent that it exists for you to experience *even while you don't fully trust it* ❤️
And here's a great thread from @QiaochuYuan on how therapy works and doesn't, from last year.
@mattgoldenberg Mmm, nice, this is great. I've been reading You Are The One You've Been Waiting For by Dick Schwartz who invented IFS, and I've actually been finding the notion of Self at least as important as the stuff around parts.
@the_aiju ❤️😞 lots of resonant comments if you look up `cbt gaslighting`, which... is sad that it's such a thing, but encouraging that people are talking about it that search: twitter.com/search?q=cbt+g…
I recently got a dark pattern cookie prompt, where one option was "accept" and the other option, hidden in pale text, was "don't sell my data" Looked like it was actually basically getting me to unthinkingly "agree" to aggressive tracking cookies 😬 (Lost screenshot unfortch)
this is ofc a natural result of the EU mandating that sites make a meaningless prompt to accept cookies - people get used to clicking it without looking
Leaving aside the question of ownership rights, how much would it cost if I wanted to fund the creation of an audiobook based on a favorite book? (per book, per word, or per hour all helpfil. rough estimates appreciated from those with experience.)
What if instead of talking about "paying attention" we talked about "investing attention"? 🤔 #MetaphorsMatter
@SarahAMcManus Ahhh same minds! I actually wrote this tweet seeking elaboration on the non-bureaucratic answer, having written a thread/rant about the confusion between the two meanings.
@visakanv @Kirsten3531 Ooooh didn't actually see that you'd started reading McGilchrist. Curious what you think of it, Malcolm said 𝘶𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘶𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘺.

@RyanGady I originally had the thought Nov 3, 2019, and was just today listening to a recording of the conversation in which I had & expressed the thought! idk if that makes it a weirder or less-weird coincidence haha 😛
what if every "Lol" was replaced with "Lo!"...
Consider that if you only have one form/context/relationship for welcoming & validating your experiences, then any experiences that cannot or may not be felt or expressed within that context will feel chronically unwelcomed & invalid. Those experiences are welcome too. ♥️💞🙏
There is but one duality: between everything and nothing.

@QiaochuYuan I can't explicitly explain what I felt I understood but when I saw Figures 2.1 & 2.2 my jaw dropped and I made a "ungh!" sound of realization. I think some part of me gets the proof. (I studied torque in engineering, so I have some intuitions for it.)
@QiaochuYuan Reading the actual description, yeah, the math checks out too. Not sure I've fully hooked up the math to the intuition moment (legit no pun intended!) but yeah, this is really cool.
@FateOfTwist_ @Nick_Yawn @eric_ruleman @QiaochuYuan even this proof doesn't actually prove that it works with all angles—could be literally just one I've tripped myself up exploring geometric patterns and generalizing my results to situations where they didn't actually apply, since I hadn't tested those other situations carefully
@maybegray I mean I think part of it is guys are afraid of being hit on by other guys and not being able to protect themselves from advances. Whether or not that's an accurate fear in a given situation is beside the point.

This excerpt makes a great point that a contradiction requires multiple things to contradict each other, it doesn't backdate to the first. The contradiction between slavery and the "all men are created equal" didn't exist *until* the second phrase was declared, in 1776.

The article also points at something that people consistently misunderstand when they try to do things, which is that if you try to just do things that others don't like, turns out they will fight back and do things that *you* don't like! 😮🤦♀️ How inconvenient.
I'm decent at chess, but not very good, and one of the things that limits my skill is that I often come up with strategies that underestimate the extent to which my opponent will thwart my plan. "But it would have worked so well if they'd just let me..!"

When I feel into the tone of inconvenience/frustration described here, and the way of thinking involved, it feels clear to me that it's characteristic of how the left hemisphere tries to solve problems. And if thwarted, tightens grip, which ofc causes an arms race. 💪💪

I'm looking for a company I heard of, maybe by someone in my network... It lets startups raise cash by basically having investors buy/sell not stock shares but subscription revenue. So say someone subscribes $12 monthly to complice.co, I could sell year's $ for $130.
@reasonisfun Yeah this was part of what was so funny when we first started talking goals and you were so anti-goals, because my main answer to this would have been "I thought of stuff I thought I wanted to do then decided I was gonna do it" which I usually call goal-setting.
@reasonisfun And I think there's value to pursuing your best hypothesis of what you want to do, even if you're not sure, because then you get more information and maybe find out if that's not the thing.
@AbhayPrasanna @earnestcapital That... is not the thing I saw! But seems similar. The thing I saw was a platform/SaaS itself, so they didn't do the investing themselves, but like, anyone (or maybe you needed a qualification idk) could sign on and invest.

I've been reaching whole new levels of self-integration recently and part of me is raising the concern that somehow having fractional pronouns would cause fragmentation. I appreciate thou, part, for raising that concern 🙏😛
And... I find myself noting that the same argument could be applied to claim that people would be more united if we got rid of "I/me/mine", and that's literally one of Ayn Rand's communist dystopias (Anthem—only novel of hers I've read, and it's quite good)
Anyway, I seem to also think having fractional pronouns may be less problematic than having *names* for given parts. Internal parts are slipperier than individual people, whose neurons don't tend to migrate between craniums. (Not saying naming parts is bad, to be clear!)
The self-integration work I've been doing lately hasn't involved reifying any particular parts in any ongoing way. I simply recognize that each of my thoughts represents the output/process of some subsystem. These systems evolve, and also may overlap. Can't neatly carve them up.
I refer to the parts contextually, eg "Ahh, there's a part of me that is fending off blame here. It's fighting. Hello fighty <3 Yeah, you're trying to insist that I'm completely powerless and blameless, because you really don't want me to feel blamed." No ongoing "fighty" part.
In this case, the next day I ended up going a lot deeper in dialogued with this part. Turned out it cares a lot about me not being blamed, & sometimes blames other people, but doesn't particularly *want* to. Just wants to not be blamed—okay! Blame nobody.
(The perspective from which it's actually coherent to blame nobody is a whole treatise in itself, but as far as I can tell, blame as a framework for explaining behavior is outdated in the same way geocentrism is outdated. Study Systems Thinking for initial sketches at helio.)
Another example: "the part of you that wants space right now" Later, that "part" might want something else, and/or another "part" may want space. These arise and pass. We relate with what is here to be related with.
Sometimes I feel a sense of unity around what I'm thinking. It feels like the whole picture. Often it's not tho! In fact, invariably no perspective is ever the whole picture, even if I have a unified sense of myself in a given moment. Others still see things I don't.
In particular, I'll also note that anger & frustration, being very left-hemisphere lateralized, tend to block out the presence of other perspectives, including whatever fears or shames or panics they're guarding. Can welcome them and also ask "what else is present?"
Anyway! Rather than thinking about myself as "having" parts, ie "whatever thoughts of mine I don't identify with" (aka egodystonic) I'm trying to not identify with any thoughts in particular, and to identify myself with the process that observes and organizes these thoughts.
The "observe" part may sound like I'm talking about some nonconceptual awareness, and I think that's sorta true inasmuch as I'm probably referring to something right-hemisphere lateralized. But it's also, I think, what IFS calls Self. Not denying self. my "selfing function"
This seems to me to be very compatible with the dharma as I understand it, although many people approach the dharma in ways that may not be compatible with this.
@nickcammarata @PoemsWeBurned Welp, accidentally summoned a whole thread with my recent thoughts on partswork.

In particular, "no-self", ie anatta, might actually just *be* the thing I'm referring to when I say I don't reify or identify with any parts of me! Would love to hear thoughts on this from @xuenay, @mattgoldenberg, @meditationstuff, @Meaningness Start 👇
@BraveSampson @danlistensto @brave Yes and no. I opted into Brave Rewards on the new tab page without knowing it would send me push notifications. I figured it would be like, certain sites I visited, instead of having banner ads blocked, would show these ads instead. Totally inobtrusive.
@BraveSampson @danlistensto @brave If the first "ad" hadn't shown up for another few days, at which point I might've forgotten about BR, I might've thought I'd gotten malware on my computer. I was NOT told what to expect by opting in, and thus I had the experience of being an unsuspecting user who was pushed on.
@BraveSampson @danlistensto @brave I'm reading the thread above a bit more thoroughly. It didn't manage to show a push notification explaining, the moment I opted in. I had a different user profile window fullscreened; that sometimes blocks... ..but just a few minutes later, ad for tquorum came thru fine.
Tbqh, even tho it's not enabled by default, the mere *idea* that the designers of Brave think that the world would be better off with people getting random push notifications multiple times an hour is making me seriously reconsider my alignment with its entire design philosophy.
FFS, it's hard enough to focus on an internet-connected computer as it is, without your browser throwing random shit at you when you're trying to single-task.
@BraveSampson @danlistensto @brave Sampson, appreciating you coming into dialogue about this, and wanting to let you know that this has me concerned on a pretty deep level.
@BraveSampson @danlistensto @brave I appreciate that y'all are trying to do something different in relation to ads, monetization, etc. I was an early adopter of flattr. This is a tough challenge and it hasn't been cracked yet. And: we can—we MUST—do better than paid push notifications.
Also I had no idea what the actual compensation was likely to be for these ads, but looking it up it seems it's maybe 1 cent per ad, sometimes maybe less than 0.1 cents. Absurd. Anyone who needs such a tiny amount of money cannot afford to buy anything from advertisers anyway.

@KHPavle @lilmaudlin I've not done this yet but I'm excited to. Dad recently started scanning a bunch of old photo albums and I went through them a few months ago. Here's tiny-me hiding under a table at a function.

@BraveSampson Hmm... "incrementally better"... it sounds like you think this is a pareto improvement, which it clearly isn't if one acknowledges there's a cost to random notifications at all, let alone a huge cost (as I think). Twitter's not a great place for clarifying disagreements tho. hm.
@TylerAlterman @_kirro @nosilverv I did a tantra yoga meditation retreat 3y ago and we did a walking still point meditation where we imagined a jewel in our chest that was stationary and that we were pulling the world toward us by walking. I tried making *other* ppl stationary and it was hard but trippy af.
@BraveSampson > that is better than today's Web ads You don't get to tell me what my values are.
@BraveSampson Trying to take your perspective right now, I imagine you feel pretty defensive, which makes sense since I'm kind of attacking the thing that you're working hard on! ❤️ I'm feeling defensive and pretty not heard, myself, about how the intended opt-in experience failed to be one.
@BraveSampson I think that the approach of replacing banner ads etc with some other ad is the way to do it. That would have a chance at being an improvement. When I first heard about brave last year, that's how I assumed it would work.
@BraveSampson I try not to be paternalistic about this stuff but I actually think that offering the user what they think they want here is not necessarily a caring move, because most people don't understand the costs of attentional disruptions. Sort of like a tasty food with trace toxins.
@BraveSampson I get the impression from this thread that the @Brave folks *also* don't deeply understand the risks of the attentional additives they're putting in the food (although you kind of think you do) so it's not like I think you're trying to poison people.
@EpistemicHope Doesn't really tell you much given the variance in what people mean by buddhism and stoicism. Either can involve lots of suppression of stuff, or a lot of welcoming in reality. eg I'm not worried about @peternlimberg

Thread · Google's new logos and why they're worse · 3 of 5 tweets
I feel like Google accidentally hired too many designers a year ago or something (maybe some projects got cancelled to eat the devs?) and so they've redone the logos for Google Photos and Google Drive, but like... the new logos aren't any better? They're fine, but who cares?

Update: while researching the above tweet for like 2 minutes I saw that they're fucking even worse with other logos, so I have rescind my "they're fine" and now I agree with @TechCrunch: Google’s new logos are bad. Snarky & spot on article: techcrunch.com/2020/10/06/goo…
So many things I could quote from that article, but most of the awfulness of the logos is (imo) self-evident, so instead I'll quote this: > The message is clear: Out with the old — the things that built your trust; and in with the new — the things that capitalize on your trust.

Thread · Doing Byron Katie's The Work with parts instead of ego
I was skeptical of Byron Katie's The Work as it seemed close to CBT's idea of wrong thoughts needing to be negated. New take is that it might work—IF you can encourage the part that's generating a given thought to explore its thinking process, without in any way doubting it. 🧵
Clarification 1: encouraging the part to explore its own thinking process, as different from trying to interrogate the part using your ego. It's like, inviting the part to take charge of more of your mental resources, and expand & elaborate its thinking process.
Clarification 2: respecting your thinking process means not just not doubting the output, but not doubting the frame either. Allowing that your thinking is happening within a frame, and makes sense within that frame. How the frame gets integrated with the whole is a separate Q.
For reference, these are the 4 Qs of "The Work" 1. Is it true? 2. Can you absolutely know that it's true? 3. How do you react, what happens, when you believe that thought? 4. Who would you be without the thought?
If you ask these questions of your parts, using your ego (which is the default way to approach something like this) the parts will likely experience it as interrogation, rather than inquiry. (I have a thread about below 2×2 but twitter search is down so idk where it is)

Oh, though the "turnaround" seems pretty cool. Invert the belief in various ways and look for ways the other forms also resonate. eg "My husband should listen to me": • "I should listen to my husband" • "I should listen to myself" • "My husband shouldn't listen to me"

I recently read that caffeine increases broad activation in whole brain (makes sense, since it affects wakefulness) whereas dopaminergic stimulants (eg ADHD meds & their illegal counterparts) primarily cause narrow activation (makes sense, since left hemisphere favors dopamine)
@DougTataryn Haha in this case easier to rewrite it since it was just a few written intentions for the day. Totally appreciate your response though—would use something like that for a review. (And yeah, not sure if doable on phone unfortunately)

The general pattern is "Thing everybody knows as if it's a PSA. Thing not everybody knows, that we're implying is (or should be) as obvious as the first thing." This... is actually a kind of underhanded way to argue. Maybe effective, but... 😬 Can also carry contempt.

@daemonhugger @visakanv @reasonisfun @theorangealt @samuelbars I've thought about this a bunch and as far as I can tell it isn't intrinsically coercive but usually is part of coercive motivation. That's not saying much though since almost everyone's motivation is coercive (even simply "do X or feel bad" has this kind of structure)
@daemonhugger @visakanv @reasonisfun @theorangealt @samuelbars Punishment is known (even by behaviorists) to not work. Perceptual Control Theory explains why: learning happens via reorganization. Punishment just produces reorganization until the punishment goes away, which could be avoidance, goodharting, lying, etc.
@daemonhugger @visakanv @reasonisfun @theorangealt @samuelbars One articulation of what commitment contracts do, in a neutral non-punishment lens, is: - create clarity about a timeline - tip the balance on a scale (no pun intended) ↳ you know this worked if the choice now feels obvious - pre-emptively shift story/identity
@daemonhugger @visakanv @reasonisfun @theorangealt @samuelbars I'll also share a case study of a recent iteration on my blogposting system. I used to have a commitment contract, now I have what I call a "showtime" (which I explain in the post) malcolmocean.com/2020/10/deadli…

Yo @Songify where's the "this song is annoying never play it again even if I hit play all on the artist/album" button? This seems like an obvious thing to have, like blocking an unwanted user on a social media site.
@GooglePlayMusic & @youtubemusic at least have a 👎 button. It doesn't do much (maybe made song not show up in radio, idk) but it made it easier to manually pick out unwanted tracks when putting on an album, at least.

@mattgoldenberg @xuenay @m_ashcroft Maybe you're pointing somewhat at not reifying parts particularly much? (ie not giving them names like you might with IFS) That makes a kind of sense to me.
@mattgoldenberg @xuenay @m_ashcroft One of the most potent books I've read on addiction, The Biology of Desire, was written by a researcher and ex-addict, and it describes addiction as something to be unlearned rather than as a medical issue. Not saying that disagrees with what you're saying, but seems relevant.
@mattgoldenberg @xuenay @m_ashcroft re addiction, I think it's also worth separating the "strong reward loop" neural cluster from the associated thoughts & feelings & reasons that show up in relation to it this approach ⬇️ points at something important here, & can be part of partswork:

I eventually realized that invoking a whole Date class to handle what were only days (times and timezones completely irrelevant) was silly. Takes this many lines of code to solve the problem perfectly using string manipulation:

@dankuck you don't like my swearing? 😉 it actually has more comments than most of my code. what seems missing to you? (it also has 500 days worth of unit tests—leap & non-leap Feb) (probably could use a check at the start to make sure it's actually a "YYYY-MM-DD" string though)

A tiny meditation invitation, if you'll pause here for a moment. Hi. Think of a dream you have. ☁️ A vision or project, that you care about but it's not happening. 😕 Got it? Okay. What parts of it do you not want to do? 😣 Now imagine someone else would LOVE to do that. 😍
Who are they? How would you find them? How would you need to communicate about it, in order for them to go "fuck yeah"? Would it be a $0 collab, or would you want to pay them? Or would they want to pay you? Or would some third person be stoked to fund both of you? 😮
When people are operating from can't-not-do YESness energy, money is liberated from "compensation" to take on new roles! It can be used to… 🧑💼 free time from bullshit jobs 🙏 clarify the container of a coaching-style relationship 🙃 explore relationship with money …&+!
You're more than welcome to comment on this thread (or QT the top tweet) to think out loud about such a dream that you might be able to energize by connecting other people who'd love to do the things you don't want to do & vice versa.
On the flipside, if you have a skill or gift that you'd like to be using more, that is currently laying dormant or stuck doing busywork, that can be another way into this upward spiral. Maybe someone is looking for you!
Finding myself vaguely amused by how the prepositions "in" & "on" are used on the internet. Something is "in" my private roam or Google Drive. Something is "on" my blog or site or public roamblog. The "in" suggests hiddenness, containedness; "on" suggests accessible surface.
Interestingly, if I'm telling a colleague where to find a shared file, I might say "it's on GDrive"—a surface they have access to, I suppose. Exceptions ofc. Folder metaphor can prompt "in". What would a shared digital workspace with "tables" look like? #MetaphorsMatter
@jazzyjermaine Huh, onteresting! Are they coming from languages that have a similar pair of words, that work differently? Or just one? I'm thinking of francophones having trouble with "this" & "that" because French uses "ce" for both, though it technically has "ceci" (this) & "cela" (that).

Thread · Building a meta-team around what releases energy
Wanting to write a thread on the larger meta-vision I have that inspired me to make this move. Initially wrote this in response to @andy_matuschak's response "Y'all, this attitude is rad", but wanted it to be a top-level thread because it's important and stands on its own.
This is inspired for me in part by tapping into what for me is the answer to "what can I do that releases energy rather than requiring energy?" and finding the answer being something on the design/vision/strategy level that every company needs.
But I can't actually found or work at all the companies! Not enough time, and too much other work that needs to happen. So I need to connect with other people, for whom there's some complementary role for them to play, that they feel stoked about!
Sometimes this may even involve me ideating #ThingsIWantToExist, then finding people & encouraging+empowering them to execute it. But "finding people" is not actually my "can't not do" thing. So I guess this meta-team needs a person who LOVES finding!
But damn, how do we bootstrap the meta-team & find a person who loves finding… before we have a person who loves finding?! One answer: it's okay to do things that take energy, in service of that which releases energy!🔥 Other answer is @m_ashcroft's michaelashcroft.org/blog/how-to-fi…
Which is what I'm doing here, & why I'm writing this as a top-level thread not just a reply to Andy. This is a beacon 🌟 Want to work with people doing whatever most deeply energizes you? Join us! …how? There's no formal thing. Joining = participating in this attitude.
I expect that at some point some more formal structures will emerge so this can scale, and I have a vision of that, but for now let's just start exploring things on this attitude level—tapping & releasing the intrinsic motivation energy.
There's a question here of "how do you go about finding out what sorts of things are energy releasing for you?" There's no one answer to that. For me, I had a hunch, and a series of conversations (including one with a friend trained in Sacred Gifts) helped me get clarity.
Another approach that might be helpful for people is what Daniel Schmachtenberger calls Dharma Inquiry. I've only gotten like 10% of the way through his Qs but they seem potent for this. I have a page about this (context+template) on my roamblog. intertwingled.blog/#/app/malcolmo…
My other suggestion, if you feel lost trying to tap into what would release energy for you to do: start small & try stuff. YESness-based motivation is a skill, & for most people is buried under tangled layers of coercive & authoritarian motivation.
Another suggestion is to focus on the other dimension, of just making contact with people. I'm glad @andy_matuschak is in this thread because he's written about why to [[Work with the garage door up]]. His notes: notes.andymatuschak.org/Work_with_the_… Example:
This thread has been exhilarating & thrilling to write, as it's the 1st time I'm articulating publicly to the biggest vision I currently have that's motivating me, which is a rich network of people who can do this synergic thing really effectively & smoothly, & train others to.🤩
Writing this thread is, clearly, for me, one of those energy-releasing things. However much it has any particular impact, the act of clarifying this, articulating it, and putting it out there, is deeply juicy & satisfying for me.
*AND* it matters that the vision happens. But I'm pursuing it in a way that's energy-releasing! I'm not trying to force myself into becoming a finder-of-people or Sacred Gifts guide. I'm doing what is mine to do, which is "teach them to yearn"
As far as I can tell, there's a kind of RH 🧠 non-doing energy here that is really beautiful. After I release this into the world, I can pause and say "okay, I've done what is mine here for now!" then rest & see what else arises that is mine to do (probably breakfast—it's 4pm😆)
"knowing is half the battle" — GI Joe Some people call this a fallacy, but a more useful approach imo is to take it seriously and modus tollens that shit, which gives you a lovely corollary: "if your battle is less than half-won, you don't actually know [enough]" twitter.com/btohtoh/status…
This inspired by what Barry Gehm did to Clarke's Third Law, which is "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
@andy_matuschak @bmndr @dreev idk exactly what about your comment prompted this, but I started replying and wrote a huge potent thread! Hence my "back atcha" with the "*you're* rad" gif. Was sent before writing any of this, but I felt the encouragement in your comment 🥰
@meditationstuff …put me in the DM group I guess 😂 1 ✅ switchy, yup 2 ✅ straight-ish 3 ✅ non-dysphoric (tho having boobs sounds like fun 🤔) 4 ✅ cis-by-default 6a ✅ feminine male
@meditationstuff @the_aiju I'd guess ~half of the weight of the emotional impact here on @the_aiju was caused by the tweet being declarative ("You are… .") rather than a question ("Are you… ?")
@meditationstuff @the_aiju Obviously it was a question in the sense of being a poll, but by the time you get to that part, you're deep in trying to parse the convoluted 5½-branched slash-and-parenthesis-filled sentence and you're already feeling whatever you're feeling about all that.
@meditationstuff Y'know, cis-by-default is actually sorta my cached 3-5 year old answer to that question. It still probably resonates more for me than many common images of what it would mean to be loudly actively cis-male, but I've touched more potent & resonant masculine archetypes since then.
@visakanv In Dick Schwartz's book You Are The One You've Been Waiting For, where he applies his IFS framework to relationships, he points out that people are freaked out towards the parts of themselves they've repressed, and respond to other peoples' unrepressed versions w the same energy.
@xuenay @meditationstuff your tweet just reminded me of this ridiculous song which says the same thing in a rather extended but not particularly elaborated way 😆 youtube.com/watch?v=wBAE0W…
@meditationstuff Ahh this also resonates:
@meditationstuff As does @ben_r_hoffman's response to @meditationstuff articulating "[in-scene] switch" as "(a) active, investigative non-disgust + (b) receptive surrender"
@meditationstuff @ben_r_hoffman This whole thing, relatedly, is feeling very in touch with tantric non-dual views and mutual causality (eg Joanna Macy's book Mutual Causality in Buddhism and General Systems Theory)

You Are The One You've Been Waiting For book by Richard Schwartz, founder of Internal Family Systems theory …where he applies the theory of Self & parts, to relationships. You are your own parts' primary caretaker, and your partner is their secondary caretaker, & vv.

Really powerful book. You can find it online. Here's a PDF of the intro & chapter 1: ifsca.ca/wp-content/upl…
Here's one way to point at how "IFS applied to relationships" doesn't just turn back into the "Family Systems Therapy" idea it was based on.
Note that while some "parts" may seem very solid, it's also valuable to just orient to the momentary divisions as they're arising, without trying to pin them down over time. Though ofc notice patterns & connections.
And the most meaningful move is a meta-one, which is taking the stance that you care about all of your parts and all of your partner's parts, not just the ones you/they identify with or feel safest with. All of them.
@AskYatharth Yeah, mainstream social norms involve treating people like their professed intentions are their full deal (although if you're actually doing strategy, you secretly track parts that might betray you). Can create culture with norm of "support all parts"

This is a bit norm-breaking, but if you're the kind of person who reads my threads and wants to do this yourself, let's face it: you want to be in relationships (romantic or business) with people who also want to live like this.
@AskYatharth Creating such a culture works by bootstrapping a meta-modern approach to norms…

@AskYatharth goddamnit I swear I saw the perfect tweet to QT here, literally today... that was saying something like "the reason people are resistant to noncoercive motivation is they think they're supposed to coerce themselves to do it" tagging @nosilverv, @mattgoldenberg, @reasonisfun

An underappreciated implication of things like Core Transformation is that if you generalize it to other people, you realize… …the things your loved ones do that annoy you most are often precisely the ways in which they're most reliably able to care for themselves.
For me, sensing this even at a really high level, even if I don't fully understand the nature of the integrity that is driving the annoying pattern, profoundly transforms my experience of relating with people, and gives me way more space to understand their experience.

@xuenay @mattgoldenberg Mmm nice. I went through a similar progression in some ways and I feel like I'm tasting a step further which is something like "the issue ppl have is they try to use self-modification techniques they don't have full buy-in for, and so resisting parts stop them from using those."
@xuenay @mattgoldenberg And then the resolution goes something like, instead of intending to do "IDC" or whatever else, orienting to a stance of intending to do more like "whatever it takes to have an internal dialogue here that integrates all objections thoroughly and doesn't dismiss or discount any"
@xuenay @mattgoldenberg Worth noting: my articulation above is coming out backwards from how I experienced it: I tasted something that felt like this thing, and then had immediate buy-in from all of my parts to iterate on the thing until it became capable of integrating all of them *in their own terms*
@xuenay @mattgoldenberg And the act of trying and iterating, in such a way, is kind of the thing.
@mattgoldenberg @xuenay @m_ashcroft > recognizing that the parts are being unreasonable fascinating. 1 of the vital tenets of the system I've been using incredibly effectively for the last few months is something like "parts are NEVER unreasonable" (challenge is to figure out how that's so)
Thread · Annoying traits in loved ones as their self-care · 1 of 5 tweets
Also, it must be said over and over: this does NOT mean you're supposed to LIKE the annoying thing the other person is doing. That interpretation of what I've said above is another endemic confusion, like this one:
@RealMackenzieL Years of life ≠ free! I know lots of orgs require hoop-jumping, but does your dream situation? You only need one workable situation. If I were you, I'd eg seek to become a "homeschooler" for a few people at the leading edge of culture etc. medium.com/@memetic007/a-…
@RealMackenzieL I got on your profile via this reply of yours to one of my tweets I was revisiting. No Bachelors of Education I'm aware of has anything useful to say about how much almost all schooling actively contributes to the self-doubt you're worried about here:
Thread · Why parts are never unreasonable, only differently framed
Matt's talking about coherence therapy here, kind of in relation to addiction/trauma, as I understand it. I want to start by thanking him for being my "someone wrong on the internet" today and motivating me to write up this thread ❣️
> recognizing that the parts are being unreasonable Fascinating. A vital tenet of the epic meta-system I've been developing for the last few months is something like "parts are NEVER unreasonable". And this seems core to Coherence Therapy to me.
Saying "unreasonable" seems to me to assert a kind of dominance, of the experience+frame of whoever's saying it, which makes it harder to see what's going on for the part! (I keep wanting to use the term "hegemonic" here. Or "privileging the frame h̵y̵p̵o̵t̵h̵e̵s̵i̵s̵")
Every part is acting 100% reasonably, within its frame. Its frame may be, in some sense, narrow or irrelevant or confused—and it's important to notice if you think so—but good luck having a dialogue with any entity whose frame you disrespect.
And a core finding of memory reconsolidation is that arguing with your parts Does. Not. Work. Well, doesn't work for integration. It can effectively suppress some knowing—you can get appearance of consensus by shocking whoever pushes the veto button.
So dialogue is necessary—whether verbal or not. (By "dialogue" I'm referring to a kind of stance that's the opposite of arguing, where you neither privilege your own frame, nor simply surrender it either. Kind of the top half of this 2×2.)
In original context, @mattgoldenberg says "not all parts can be reasoned with". In narrow sense of the word "reason", I think some parts are "un-reason-able". But their stubbornness is actually deeply sensible, as opposed to being made out of unreason.
"Unreasonable", perhaps, in practice, means "refuses to talk with me how I want to be talked with". In this sense, from the unreasonable part's perspective, you're also being unreasonable! So the puzzle, w/ parts or ppl, is to find a way to dialogue that satisfies BOTH parties.
Agents have a tendency to try to drag other agents into their own frame in order to have conversations, because there's a huge home turf advantage. Meanwhile, agents also resist such drags for the same reason! This, on all fractal scales:
To some extent, I'm even doing that here! Look at me defining "unreasonable" in this uncharitable way. Am I really trying to dialogue with Matt, or score points or something? 🤔😂🙃
Fwiw, I myself held the very confusion I'm trying to illuminate here, til about 4mo ago. So this is in some ways me trying to point something out to past me and people in a similar situation. I'm not sure this thread would have worked for that! But might help someone. Lmk.
So yeah: any person, or part, that thinks other parts are being unreasonable is also a part and (within its frame) is being totally reasonable in holding it that way. So one can't simply decide to not see it that way. As always, must integrate the purpose of seeing it that way.
Personally, I've worked with a few resistances to this idea, including helpless rage when people like @reasonisfun would say things like "all behavior has reasons". One associated w traumatic pseudomemory of my pain getting dismissed bc other person's behavior must have reason 😬
For me, thinking about it in terms of "coherence" rather than "reason" helped tons. Sounded less like justification? Maybe just didn't trigger the association. Who knows. Anyway, turns out the coherence underlying apparent dysfunction is actually deeply reassuring to me.
So find what works for you 🥰 Will probably start with getting a sense of the meaning & integrity of all of your own behavior, via eg Core Transformation. Then generalize. You'll know you've hit on the same kinda thing if it has this sort of effect:
Helping my own parts see this (and integrate it with their existing knowings) and helping other people see this (and learn from them how my own frame is yet too narrow) is one of my top priorities at the moment 🤩🚀 Another: (on a diff abstraction level)
@mattgoldenberg @xuenay @m_ashcroft Turned this into a whole thread!
Thread · Annoying traits in loved ones as their self-care · 1 of 5 tweets
Another clarification, re > the things your loved ones do that annoy you most are often precisely the ways in which they're most reliably able to care for themselves. This doesn't mean their care in this domain is effective, to be clear. Just that it is intense and sacred.
@RealMackenzieL I just wrote a thread and part of that thread is pointing at something that feels relevant to what I'm trying to say here. Something about the stance required for non-traumatizing education.
@nibrasibn hello! I snoozed this tweet for a month to come back and reply to it and remind you about it ☺️
@captain_mrs The reason I'm using "agents" and not parts is because this happens on all scales, eg • interpersonally, between individual people • politically, between memeplexes Regarding mental modules, I don't strictly call them anything in particular.
@captain_mrs And this goes down way smaller to what IFS folks would call "parts": I aim to take a stance towards every little thought where I regard it with respect/honor/sacredness. There's a sense in which you can model the whole brain as being kind of agenty. meltingasphalt.com/neurons-gone-w…
@pjeby @xuenay @mattgoldenberg Hmmm, appreciating your guys' perspectives here. I guess I'm recognizing that I haven't done much work on like... chemical addictions, using these kinds of coherence techniques! Although I had many things I used to treat as being addiction-like and that didn't work at all.
@pjeby @xuenay @mattgoldenberg I think it's still possible to orient towards a misfiring brain system with respect or disrespect, and with an orientation that sees it as orderly vs simply disorderly. And I would expect that to be a difference that makes a difference.
@pjeby @xuenay @mattgoldenberg To take a sort of extreme example, if someone with dementia wanders into the woods, that's not senseless—there's still something going on in them that generated wandering into the woods as opposed to into the neighbor's house. Impairment but not chaos.
@pjeby @xuenay @mattgoldenberg And barring like, a stroke, your brain usually isn't firing in a *random* way. So "misfiring" still sort of feels weird to me, because it focuses on what it's not doing, vs what it's doing. Reminds me of this classic essay: celandine13.livejournal.com/33599.html
Great articulation. I feel like I've sort of been doing a hybrid thing, that is orienting with immense love towards each part (tbh, each *thought*) but not reifying any of them into particular roles or identities.

Vague feeling I'm starting to develop the underlying mechanism beneath perfect pitch. I kickstarted a little music device called @Artiphon Orba, and the 2 times I have reached for it to jam with a song, turns out the song is in the right key (C or Am) twitter.com/tenderlash/sta…
😂 Forgot I wrote this: > no wrong notes, just… notes that take a bit more ummm explaining to do if someone walks in on you.
Usually I would lean over and play on my 🎹 keyboard instead, which is part of what's interesting about this. Here's an older thread about some playing around with this kind of key stuff:
@magicianbrain @pjeby +100 to this. Very glad you pointed it out. I think it's a fun frame to try on playfully, and not worry about too much. And I guess, to hold it all within like... suppose this is true of me? What can I learn from that, in its specifics, without feeling self-distrust?
@magicianbrain @pjeby And it's funny timing for me lol because I just connected with a Coherence Therapist this month, and very specifically sought out that form of therapy (though more because I wanted to understand it better than because I thought it was what my problems particularly needed.)
@mattgoldenberg @Artiphon Like if I could make an online course for it? Hmm… Not at all confident I have anything generalized that I could deliver here, but if someone wants to bet w me on this, I'd be happy to try to coach you through the same process.
@mattgoldenberg @Artiphon Main instruction is: spend 100s of hrs "jamming with experts" which is Victor Wooten's description of how to learn a language natively. That's how babies learn their native language. For music, that means, put on songs and play along. A lot. (And no wrong notes.)
Yeah this feeling hasn't persisted consistently, but I definitely have had more of it the last few weeks than for most of the last few years. This is exciting.
This is part of the context of this current arc for me. I have a sense of assembling an emergent distributed self-organizing meta-team.
@juanlanteri I wanna talk with you about the thing you're building.
