Rebranding the Goal-Crafting Intensive as a Beyond Goals workshop

I've been part of running online intentionality workshops for 6+ years, and we're pretty seriously considering rebranding them this year given how much our philosophy & approach has evolved in that time. "Goal-Crafting Intensive" ➔ "Beyond Goals Workshop"? Some reflections:

The workshop centers on "goals". We love how this focus has meant that even as the workshop has started involving partswork and a lot of inner untangling techniques, it keeps things focused on moving towards a positive future, not just fixing yourself.

The author discusses the difference between people who 'flow' through life and people who feel the need, and attempt to, explicitly self-improve. He (you know it's a he) is pointing at a real distinction, tracking Heidegger's: that between present-at-hand and ready-to-hand.

And actually, we've had a pretty fluid relationship with goals from the outset. No need for "SMART" goals with their Measurable and Time-Bound qualities. This sort of goal is something that everyone has—we might as well get good at it.

Goal = recognizable desired state in the future, that causes you to act differently in the present so as to realize it. If... 🛣️ no recognizable state = "trajectory" 😣 not desired = "should" 👀 not future = "regret" ☁️ no action = "dream" 🤠 actions just for show = "signalling"

And we've recognized that people may want a different focus. If people already have a clear sense of their desired future, we encourage them to focus on whatever blocks are in the way. Or if you're just super overwhelmed, we can help guide triage.

But nonetheless, the name of the workshop and the default structure (1h each on Goal-Setting, Planning, Execution, & Reflection) has given some people a sense that you're "supposed" to be focused on goals, even if you associate the word "goal" with self-coercion & stress.

So we've been exploring a bit of both how we might liberate people more deeply to truly use the 5h of the workshop in whatever way feels most alive to them. We want this to be a container where people learn more wholesome ways of being! 🤩 twitter.com/abhayance/stat…

One idea is to rename the workshop. I like the name Beyond Goals since it still talks about Goals (which themselves can be so liberating for some people) but it also speaks of the limitations that goal-focus can bring.

🤔Complice helps w/ adult psych dev 🤯 In terms of Kegan stages: 3→4 Choosing & focusing on personal goals helps ppl break from being reactive to society demands. 4→5 Fluid goal approach (vs rigid plans) helps ppl break from being subject to own goals. twitter.com/Malcolm_Ocean/…

We're also exploring how we might create more affordances within the workshops for people to really feel into what's right for them and stretch in a direction that feels really good. the appropriate developmental mixture of support & challenge.

We're still really stoked about the overall workshop format, which combines: 📺 videos to inspire/frame 📝 exercises to apply it 🍅 coworking to focus 💬 coaching to unstick (honestly I'd love to see other online courses converted to this workshop format)

Guide 🧵 How I run Online Workshops (an alternative to online courses) TL;DR =  📅 long one-off event  ⚔️ choose-your-own adventure workbook  💬 chat-based coaching  📺 video call for co-presence  🤔 optional advance content  🎡 intake form for steering  💸 pay-what-you-want

So if you want to evolve with us as our workshop evolves, you can come to one of the upcoming sessions in July! It's PWYW (with a $25 deposit), which combined with the open-endedness means it's almost certain to be worth it! intend.do/event/gci?tw=M…
