#ThingsIWantToExist Heat-exchanger optimized for quietly moving substantial amounts of air between indoors & outdoors without wasting too much energy, even if large temperature diff.
Have been thinking about this in the background for awhile, but @m_ashcroft's tweet reminded me how important fresh air is. Thermal was the type of system I least grokked when studying Systems Design Engineering so I would need to do a bunch of reading in order to math this.
But the basic idea is that you have air coming in and air going out, and you run them past each other so that the incoming hot(/cold) air gets cooled(/warmed) by some room temperature air that you're about to get rid of anyway! Get rid of that CO₂ without messing temperature.
Original last line of that tweet was "Fresh O₂ without much heat delta." but then I recalled air's already 20% oxygen vs CO₂ measured in parts-per-million, so the issue is "humans get stupid when there's too much CO₂ in the air" (how the hell was this a useful adaptation?)
It seems like having plants would be good too, but if the issue is mainly at night and plants mainly absorb CO₂ when photosynthesizing... would need some grow-op style lights in a diff room, then a fan to cycle air to/from bedrooms.
I looked a few years ago and was unable to find good data on how much CO₂ a given plant absorbs and which are best. Just looked again and it's all crap. This quora answer has some tidbits but it measures gases in volume without specifying pressure 🙄🤦♀️ quora.com/How-many-indoo…
Seems like one obvious way to do the math would be some multiple of "how much mass does the plant add (above & below ground) per day?" This shit is surprisingly hard to google, but you could take some measurements. Could also make airtight box w CO₂ meter + grow lamp!

oh shit yeah - "self-employment" is a bad frame. I'll still fill it out that way on govt forms where that's the only option, but yeah, damn so what am I? not sure if "feral free agent" is quite it let's explore frame ideas! a mentor used to just say "freelance person" - not bad
but idk, a freelance etymologically is a mercenary warrior, and in more recent times still carries a "for hire" connotation, as opposed to my attitude which is very much more "I do what I want!"
while I'm musing about phrases here: "I am my own boss" is another one people use, but "boss" is clearly the wrong metaphor here since I'm kind of a Rebel in Gretchen Rubin's 4 Tendencies framework, ie
I aesthetically very much like the phrase "funemployed" = fun+unemployed but it wasn't designed for my situation and in any case it doesn't evoke the extent to which I am pulled by not just fun but also purpose to do things
the purpose thing though... that feels pretty central!

If you want to try this yourself, take an item from @made_in_cosmos' list, and gently ask yourself: "does this resonate for me?" As you do, invite any images or memories to come to mind of when this was true for you in your schooling. They may be super vague, just listen.
Speaking the sentence out loud can help, both with the initial inquiry and once you've got an image or memory in mind, to amplify the felt sense of truth.
If you notice parts of you quickly objecting "no that's not true" before you've really felt into it, say to them: "ok, I know that's not the whole truth, I just want to find out if parts of me feel like this is true, and what they think about it" & see if they'll give space
So yeah, your aim here is to gently feel into what part of you is genuinely holding one of these statements as feeling true. That part of you might not know that you're an adult now and you have way more freedom in various ways!
You're not trying to argue with that old perspective. Overwriting doesn't work! Just invite it to know what it knows, fully, and offer it whatever other data you have to help it form a more complete picture of the world.
Oh man probably it would make sense to actually *do this myself*, rather than just telling other people to. Okay, will make a new thread for that, and link below when done.
Oh another suggestion, based on how I'm approaching this: to start with, scan down the list for the first one that really stands out to you (it may already be jogging a particular memory at that point) and do this exploration on that one

A few months ago, I got excited about a course on the Ideal Parent Figure protocol, and I wanted to do it but I had the curse of enough self-knowledge to know that if I just bought the course I was unlikely to make it through even with its live calls.
So what I did was recruit a few friends to go through the course videos with me instead of the live calls. This turned out to be a way better idea than I'd even imagined. Having friends made there be an obvious time to go through it, but it was so different than live lecture!
These co-watching sessions were what allowed me to realize that one of the hidden lessons of school is:
We were listening in parallel, and if someone started feeling uncomfortable with what the teacher was saying, that person would post in the chat with a critique, and others would chime in, and we might even pause the instructor altogether to share concerns.
This is so inconceivable in the context of a live teacher in a classroom. Can get part of it with sidechannels, but there's a qualitative shift that happens when you get to HIT PAUSE on the teacher and speak your own voice out loud instead, uninterrupted. Profoundly empowering.
You can do this with writing too, which I highly recommend! Either pull something into a google doc or use an app like @worldbrain to comment directly on webpages or PDFs.
If your approach to learning doesn't on net encourage you to feel what you feel and know what you know, it's probably net traumatizing.

Occurs to me that it would also be amazing to read an article written in the early 20th(/19th) century called "big 20th(19th) century ideas the world is counting on you to know". I bet it'd be a mix of: - now commonplace - now still rare - now forgotten - now considered confused
it's interesting to ask, for any given thing that could get goodharted, what would actually happen as a result?
for instance, suppose you set a @bmndr goal to complete 20 intentions per day via the complice.co integration that obviously goodharts into "now you break tasks down into smaller and smaller pieces" ...but maybe that's itself worth causing!
so you might not get more done total, but it might take you less time & stress getting that stuff done, because breaking things down into smaller pieces will give you a lot more clarity on what you're trying to do and plus satisfaction & motivation as you make progress
By total coincidence, I swear, I happened to tweet about this thought I've had before (including the above example) ...the day after I added a new feature to @CompliceGoals that allows you to break intentions down into smaller steps:

@visakanv I went to try on a dress at a sort of middle-aged-woman's clothes store once when shopping with someone else, and the storeclerk woman was a little nervous but then she was like "huh, the wide shoulders of that actually suit you better than any woman I've seen try it on!"

@visakanv most lady-dresses are designed around a bust though, and often have a sort of sash thing that pulls things in below that in a weird way, that doesn't suit male bodies usually (also have to deal with how non-poofy dresses can easily have their contours disrupted by crotch bulge)
@visakanv even if not awkward about crotch bulge or whatever, it's still visually not great jeans & other men's pants have a lot of ambiguity there; the fabric naturally folds a bit, bulges could probably make a dress that does similar! hadn't really thought about that before

Subtle but important update for complice.co today, realigning something that had been slightly off for years: a source of staleness. The existence of this feature is cool, but isn't the important part. The important part is a constraint: an old path replaced by this!
Complice, in a different way than Twitter, is all about TODAY. It's a to-do list app, but it doesn't have a big backlog of tasks queued up of bullshit that your past self thought was a good idea but your current self couldn't care less about.
These backlogs are what I call "staleness", and it's one of the main issues most people face with almost any productivity system. And those systems can hide almost anywhere. I realized I had a backlog growing in my browser tabs! Apply aliveness to that:

Anyway, about 5 years ago I added something people had been asking for, which was a slightly easier way to grab things from yesterday that hadn't been completed. I didn't want them to roll-over automatically, and I wanted some friction to aid awareness: blog.complice.co/post/149127901…
Unfortunately, the reality is that people tend to bypass sources of friction, so the "write about how you're going to approach this differently today" just turned into people writing a single character to get through the prompt, then deleting it. Hazard of adversarial design!
What I've now done is still slightly adversarial, but should be more attractive: • it has a nice interface for actually doing the breakdown • *after* breaking down clears the staleness marks: ")))" - makes sense since the new steps are fresh!
The main thing I think will help is that I think that breaking things down will actually WORK better than trying to type some sort of "what are you going to do differently this time?" answer. If so, people will associate the breakdown UI with relief rather than obstaculousness!
This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of designing more elements into Complice to nudge people towards loving relationships with themselves and their goals.
One I'm planning to work more on soon is what I call the "metacognition module", which will be a series of prompts that helps people figure out why they're stuck. Feel free to share any ideas for exercises or components to include in that!

Context: with a small team, I've been running online workshops a couple times a year (30 sessions total) since 2017, and we're about to clear $100k revenue. The GCI is about life-effectiveness, but the event format could be used for many other topics! complice.co/event/gci?tw=m…
📅 Long One-off Event Why? Self-paced courses end up never-paced courses, and cohort courses are easy to fall behind in or feel burdened by. Instead, get some huge progress made in a single 5h session! Participants only have to make it to one date.
📅 Long One-off Event 2 When? Pick a weekend and host 2 events at 2 different times if you want to suit a global audience. We usually do North American Saturday night (suits East Asia & Oceania) & Sunday morning (suits Europe & Africa). Can do a few weekends in a row if demand.
📅 Long One-off Event 3 How? For a 5h session, it's good to encourage folks to take breaks. We do set-up & wrap-up in the first & last half-hour, and the remaining 4h is divided into 8 half-hour blocks which we do as 25min pomodoros with 5min breaks.
📅 Long One-off Event 4 During the breaks, I encourage people to stretch their legs & look away from their screens. We also note that while usually you wouldn't chat during a pomodoro, the coaching channels are totally great for that purpose.
⚔️ Choose-your-own-Adventure Workbook Why? Your learners are all starting at different places and may have different goals and different struggles. This is very obvious in the context of a goal-setting workshop like GCI, but it applies to some degree with any course.
⚔️ Choose-your-own-Adventure Workbook 2 How? If you're thinking of running an online course/workshop, presumably you've got something to teach. You may even already have your own teachable, YouTube series, or other writing people could apply to their lives. Host that somewhere.
⚔️ Choose-your-own-Adventure Workbook 3 Where? We've got a simple password-protected wordpress site. Easy for multiple editors to access & update. The videos are hosted on gdrive & embedded. Could also use a teachable or other platform.
⚔️ Choose-your-own-Adventure Workbook 4 What? Have a few default recommended content+exercise combos. Some people like video but others don't, so offer both where possible. Aim for exercises that can be usefully completed in 30mins, but with more value if someone spends longer.
⚔️ Choose-your-own-Adventure Workbook 5 What else? Have a solid high-level framework & Table of Contents that shows how it all fits together and guides people on how to go about choosing what to look at. (More on "how to steer" below)
⚔️ Choose-your-own-Adventure Workbook 6 Key: CYOA is different from self-paced in that there's no single linear path. Some people might spend the whole session on exercise 1, start partway through, or even spend most of the time talking with coaches about a unique situation.
💬 Chat-based Coaching Why? People get stuck. They may have Qs that need answers; they may just need encouragement. Chat scales & parallelizes unlike video/audio. For goals workshop, coaching is often psychological, but for eg photoshop workshop, it might be more technical.
💬 Chat-based Coaching 2 How? Set up a new slack workspace for each 5h session. Add custom emoji ❤️🔥 Public channels: #_general #_intros #_links #_techsupport As each participant joins, make new locked channel: 🔒name_coaching & add {them + all coaches}
💬 Chat-based Coaching 3 Why coaching, not open discussion? Not just privacy. It's… many people are helpful to a fault 😅 Given this choice: • face my own challenges • help fellow participants …guess what they'll focus on? Tell those folks "you can coach next session!"
💬 Chat-based Coaching 4 Indeed, some coaches are past participants (in addition to friends etc). Our coaches are all volunteers, since it's fun & low-stakes—just show up & say stuff & ask Qs. They also may get blog post ideas, & find ongoing clients (if they're looking).
💬 Chat-based Coaching 5 We aim for 1 coach for every 4-7 participants, but it's pretty flexible. Fewer coaches just requires more focus on workbook. Above ~50 participants it's hard to coordinate coaches between all 50 channels though! We do have a private 🔒_coaches channel.
💬 Chat-based Coaching 6 Other tips for coaches to coordinate 50 parallel channels: ⭐️ star channels you're active in 🔕 turn off notifications except @-mentions & get participants to @-mention A LOT 🎽 tag other coaches in 🔰 practice: start with ~20 people then scale
(aside: I *think* with software that was actually optimized for this precise purpose, we could reach like 100 participants without losing track of people, but tbh I'm still not sure that'd actually be better than just having 2 sessions—would love to have that software tho!)
📺 Video Call for Co-Presence Why? Just having a chat system, especially without open discussions, people wouldn't get the chance to see each other, and it would be harder to keep people in sync.
📺 Video Call for Co-Presence 2 How? Zoom or similar. Lately we've explored having a few breakout rooms, whether for coaches to do short out-loud coaching sessions in, or for me to run a 7min workout during the long break. Turn on "let participants choose room".
📺 Video Call for Co-Presence 3 What else? Pretty straightforward. We like to have the coaches introduce themselves on zoom at the start & give a 1-2 sentence intro to their interests/specialties. (We also have coach bios listed on the website and in the #_intros channel.)
🤔 Optional Advance Content Since we start selling tickets a month before the sessions, it's good to give people something right away. Plus some of our exercises benefit from not just being done in one block.
🤔 Optional Advance Content 2 One way we encourage people to work on the advance content proactively is saying that they can get access to the rest of the course content before the event *only by* emailing us saying they've finished the advance content!
🤔 Optional Advance Content 3 Important to have this be optional—can get tons from event regardless. We say > "It's not arbitrary homework designed to waste your time. If you feel like this is going to be a waste of time, then change the instructions until it feels worthwhile."
🎡 Intake Form for Steering At the same time as the advance content, we also encourage folks to fill out our intake form. It takes <5 minutes and gives us extremely useful context on what to encourage our participants to focus on during the session.
🎡 Intake Form for Steering 2 The two key Qs, which you can copy: > If there is only a single thing you get from this, what do you want that one thing to be? > If you imagine that you're at the end of the event and you're feeling disappointed… what would the reason(s) be?
🎡 Intake Form for Steering 3 Then, the magic happens at the start of the event, when we have coaches go through the form responses and *paste in participant answers to these questions*, so we're starting the conversation with the person's priorities top of mind.
🎡 Intake Form for Steering 4 Sometimes this we direct them at a particular video or exercise based on their main challenge. Another common "why I'd be disappointed" is "already knew all this", in which case we encourage these veterans to bring it on & talk directly with us.
🎡 Intake Form for Steering 5 Intake form also has a 1-10 scale for each of our 12 submodules, to gauge which ones people already grok. eg G1) I have a hard time knowing what I want or envisioning goals for the future that motivate me It can help see us spot bottlenecks.
💸 Pay-What-You-Want High-level: • two payment options: ‣ $275 up front ‣ $25+PWYW (most pick this) • $25 deposit ensures people aren't never-willing-to-pay-for-anything ppl (& serious about coming) • some no-shows but 🤷♀️ • frame: "flexible pricing", not "donation"
💸 Pay-What-You-Want 2 At the end I speak out loud for a few mins about why we do PWYW, and encourage people to contribute whatever feels right based on: ‣ value they got ‣ their budget ‣ their desire to support our work & other people with less money being able to attend
💸 Pay-What-You-Want 3 I thank people by name as they contribute. We only recently added that part, and it increased contributions significantly! Social proof & appreciation matter to people. (HT @AbhayPrasanna for this idea, inspired by twitch & other streaming contexts)

@liminal_warmth I had an experience this week during my therapy session where we wanted to change a childhood memory from an experience of scarcity to abundance. I found the game gave me intuition around time travel and alternate timelines, which enriched the experience!
Just realized twitter-on-web is a decent medium for a particular conversation workflow: reading to the end, then commenting inline How? ctrl-click to open tweets you want to reply to in a new tab, while reading the whole thread. Can do because each tweet has permalink.
This is one way Twitter DMs fall short. (But even FB messenger, with its reply-to-this-message feature, doesn't make it easy to read to the end first. Also true of slack since only one thread can be open at a time.)

Various truths of physics can also be verified on one's own. Even very weird physical laws, which might take expensive tech to measure, that requires many people to make or understand, you still don't need to get others' perspectives on.

The people asking for money know they're not scamming (those who aren't scamming—and probably most aren't scamming) but QC has no way to know this, and if the standard thing for kids to do with birthday money was to give it away, sob-stories would quickly get optimized to eat it.

ongoing 100k convo has me realizing that I grew up not exposed to huge wealth disparity. was in a small town—smaller than you think! ~1500 ppl basically nobody there was loaded and nobody was homeless the kid who seemed fanciest, his dad was... a really successful fisherman?
sure, some people were down on their luck, or living on welfare, and some had more money from a business or whatever... but the scene as a whole felt coherent. everyone kinda knew each other... one school, one church per denomination, two grocery stores, two gas stations
oh I guess maybe some of the folks who had cottages there that they would visit for a month or two in the summer... some of them were probably wealthier? I used to play tennis with some kids from Michigan who would visit their grandparents, they seemed nice
huh. then my parents scrounged up enough money for boarding school since the small-town school wasn't a good place for someone as nerdy as me & my sisters that was definitely a transition to a different scene
then everyone I met there was upper-middle-class to quite-rich, and it wasn't always clear who was who because the kids didn't necessarily themselves have cash and you wouldn't meet their parents or see their homes (and from around the world so culture diffs larger than wealth)
so I guess I saw a fair range, though not all in one room or on one street
noticing I'm not actually thinking about this as clearly as I would be if I were writing it in a private journal or DMs to friends... not sure who would be reading it or why or what their context of me would be so ig I'm gonna leave this here ♥️ gn twttr

last night laying in bed I was exploring practicing frame dialogue between various parts well—actually, not even so much actual detailed dialogue as just adopting an attitude of respect across frame gaps
like, from a given perspective where A obviously makes sense and B does not, can I find a way to acknowledge that there are other perspectives from which B obviously makes sense and A does not?
so initially I was doing fairly personally-immediate parts, like respecting the experience of a part of me that's feeling sad and lonely, then inviting the sad & lonely part to respect that other parts of me know that I'm loved or whatever
then I was like... what if I just practice embodying the parts of me that most vibe with various more external perspectives, and see if I can respect the other external perspectives they disagree with?
so then for a few moments I explored: - my inner 100k rich kid honoring the perspective of folks desperate for $10 - my inner aggrieved oppressed person honoring the perspectives of people who have more money than they know what to do with
and then... I forget exactly, because it was just as I was drifting off to sleep, but I think I tried on a few different political stances and tried to respect their political opponents' perspectives at the same time

Often these tug against each other—attempts to change things make us dissatisfied, and attempts to enjoy things get us out of touch with what we don't like about them—but they don't intrinsically have to conflict! The conflict is due to certain strategies.
Suffering-based motivation is a strategy for motivating yourself that involves feeling bad until you do the thing you're trying to motivate yourself to do. It can work, but often backfires, especially long-term. Plus it sucks. I have a thread about it:
Given sufficient self-integration, it's perhaps *easier* to enjoy what is so even if it's not perfect and you're also trying to change it... because you trust that you're not going to get stuck so you don't have to make yourself miserable in order to not get stuck.

a @CompliceGoals user wants the app to have better support for backlogs, which goes against the whole anti-staleness philosophy but it has me musing... what about a backlogs feature where each item costs 50¢/day to keep? It forces asking "what's worth it?"
This would potentially be bad, since users would put stuff in there but then still not do them then feel guilty and grumpy at Complice for taking their money. Overt incentives aren't always a match for emotional complexity!
It might also lead to people completing old things that were bad ideas, to remain consistent with having paid $X to keep it around.
Might be slightly better if instead of a flat rate it charged more for each item. Backlog: - first item free - 2nd item 25¢/day - 3rd item 50¢/day - 4th item $1/day - 5th item $2/day - 6th item $4/day ....oh! Or it could increase not per length but based on number of days!
I really do like the idea of a backlog that costs money though. It makes the burden of carrying old stale tasks more vivid. It confronts you with the question of whether it's worth continuing to try to do something you've been putting off.

Would be good to have a button on each tweet called "STFU" that makes the tweet go away, rather than having to just passively scroll past it or close the tab. Doesn't even have to get logged ANYWHERE, let alone counted & displayed or incorporated into the algorithm.
Gotta have appropriate call-to-actions for every situation. Basic design principle. Sure, you don't *want* people to encounter bad takes (you don't, right?) but given that they will sometimes, what are they supposed to do about it? Give some options besides QT-dunks!
