Slowing down AI development without pausing or degrowth

there is no reason except Moloch that we can't slow the fuck down do you want to be Moloch's bitch? or do you want to hold your head high and say "if I don't do it, maybe someone else will, but it won't be me"

some people say "delaying AGI one day means more people dying" and that is TRUE *iff* we get it right but cringily dumb if we get it wrong. and rushing means mistakes

and as betterwithout.ai points out, we might just destabilize our society in the meantime by turning over too many things to algos we don't understand that are optimizing for profits, nevermind eventual AGI

I'm making a conservative case here, but I'm NOT saying stop, pause, or go backwards. I'm saying slow down. breathe. sit at the ocean's shore for an hour and watch the tide move.

conservativism, properly held, has a very humble tone: "we actually don't quite know why what's working is working, so let's be careful as we change it. it's very precious and our wisdom may not be deep enough"

short thread that makes my point better than I did

This will ultimately be cited as one of the finest examples of mob irrationality. It's saying: "We're upset, so we're instinctively polarizing and threatening to hand over the world's most powerful company to Microsoft for $0."

quoting @ashleevance: 700 of 770 OpenAI employees saying they will go now. What is the board going to be board of?

"too fast" means your OODA loop is fucked

It turns out the real danger in e/acc is that things accelerate to such a speed that humans can't recover from the emotional shock of large events quickly enough to make well-considered decisions. Remember that this is 700 very (nomally) intelligent people doing this.

To be clear, I'm not arguing for degrowth which is one of the stupidest and most unholy ideas of all time. There's a kind of forward pace that breathes, that retains awareness and poise, rather than rushing headlong foolishly. That is the way.

The thing about “degrowth” is that it’s actually just an arc toward death. And while its most eloquent advocates make it sound like a high-rent hospice center for the species, the reality is that the unwinding such policies would trigger if enacted leads quickly to the most

quoting @oftenuncommon: "Degrowth" is a dangerous path for humanity.
