> kick the can down the road to the next group of unwitting people who may not have access to any of this deserves to be emphasized: people literally don't notice that if all you do is kick a bad actor out, they just go somewhere *else*. that's how brent dill ended up *here*

quoting @gptbrooke: @IsoldeMoorey @the_aiju -my thing with him was bad but his record was misrepresented to me & I walked away from it feeling like he had knowingly done wrong but that I had bad boundaries -I nonetheless took it seriously enough that I worked to inform event organizers & people loc

@QiaochuYuan I'm glad he ended up here. I've learned a lot from talking with him here in public that would have been hard to learn any other way. like I don't know WHO else I could learn it from, and it required the convos happening in tweet-reply form both structurally & socially

@QiaochuYuan he doesn't seem to know how to participate in an in-person community in a way that's safe for him or for others (let alone both) but this isn't an in-person community (it's not a community at all). it's an open graph, where people associate as they choose

This part of twitter is oasis. There are norms, and not rules - and you cannot rely even on the norms. There are strange and dangerous people, there are hermits who live nearby who you may never see, there are ranting prophets and tired travellers.

@QiaochuYuan and one feature of that is that anybody who wants to block him (understandable! a lot of his tweets are tone deaf & full of caustic hell realm energy) can just do so, and never see any of his stuff again

if you feel like it would be a relief to not see someone's tweets again, I encourage you to mute or block them with no further reason needed. letting people make you uncomfortable is not a virtue

@QiaochuYuan regarding communities (which again, tpot is not) there's "if all you do is kick someone out, they go somewhere else" and there's also "if someone gets kicked out everywhere, they have nowhere to go" and these both suck & there's no good solution with society's current skill level

@QiaochuYuan chaos said, aptly: so an environment full of people with 18 sigma psychic defenses who can just make space for him to claw at their systems 24/7/365.24 and not be bothered by it would be fine — optimal, probably. unfortunately neither he nor i know where to find one of those
