Happy New Year! (from Nova Scotia where I'm visiting my family, which is 1h east of Eastern Time)

@piva_jonas Mmm nice :) My grandfather lived up on the hill in Chester when I was young and we would go visit him once or twice a year there. Fond memories of running around with my cousins in his front yard.

Pretty wild as humans also do this, developing psychological defense mechanisms in response to trauma. So we get triggered when people run up against our prickly leaves

quoting @LeifBersweden: If Holly (Ilex aquifolium) finds its leaves are being nibbled by deer, it switches genes on to make them spiky when they regrow. So on taller Holly trees, the upper leaves (which are out of reach) have smooth edges, while the lower leaves are prickly 🤙 https://t.co/J1qvjceXC5

@PrinceVogel yeah I am considering this too they're saying "not all reported as covid" and like, are we checking what they actually are and ruling out "definitely not covid"? for most of 2020 at least, many parts of Canada had more net-increase-opioid-overdoses than covid deaths

3 likes 0 RTs

fun puzzle 👇 in some sense, non-coercion has the potential to be just... better, which if fully understood generates a natural inclination towards using that approach however, sometimes we have compartmentalized understandings and the overall system is still based on fighting

it's pretty common for people to have a stage like this on the path, as far as I can tell. you bootstrap the new understanding by trying it within the old (coercing yourself towards noncoercive) until it can untangle the old

many make the mistake of reifying the relationship, bringing it onto the same ontological status as the people within it; this is a grave mistake, as it allows you to do such nonsense as prioritizing the sake of "the relationship" over that of the person ur supposed to care about

quoting @embryosophy: @cognazor relationships are egregores

@pee_zombie seems related to this, re parts & wholes

👁️ autosurveillant 👁️ @pee_zombie ·

this pattern is a manifestation of the same command hierarchy bias that drives the conspiratorial impulse; people tend to privilege explanations of phenomena with a single agentic actor over epiphenomenal explanations where it emerges from the behavior of many independent actors

quoting @dystopiabreaker: a pattern i've noticed with some loud blockchain critics: if something about the system isn't ideal or they don't like it, they often consider it to be a consequence of Improper Management in reality, these systems are organic and organically adopted (a messy process)

"what if I die tomorrow?" is helpful for releasing narrow-view frustrations but is useless for trying to prioritize what to do with your life. You Only Live ONCE, not You Only Live NEVER. You in fact have to figure out what to do with your ONE wild and precious life.

@IlIIlIIIIlIIIl yeah I grew up in the 90s without a TV and I remember thinking I would raise my kids without a TV, but that's just an incoherent notion now used to be able to cleanly easily separate TV (passive consumption) from computer (creative: coding! MS Paint!) but it's all a mess now

0 likes 0 RTs

@IlIIlIIIIlIIIl this is important because our parents were able to give us a more creative environment to grow up in without having to *control our behavior* in any way. they just didn't buy a TV vs trying to "limit screen time" or prevent kids from downloading apps that are right there... 😬🤷‍♀️

loving concept of "modal confusion": 1. try to solve being mode with having mode (objectification, eg trying to get love by *having* sex) 2. try to solve having mode with being mode (spiritual bypassing = "too heavenly to be any earthly good") (@vervaeke_john➔@JimRuttShow pt2)

9 likes 1 RT

Vervaeke talks about how:  having mode = I-It  being mode = I-Thou in Buber's terms he doesn't mention it for whatever reason but I'm sure he knows these modes map onto the hemispheres since he's talked with McGilchrist in depth youtube.com/watch?v=JdB-BM…

2 likes 0 RTs

@jim_rutt asks the excellent Q "what about doing?" Vervaeke answers: doing has 2 modes:  work (having: real goals, trying to actually change something about the world)  play (being: game has goals, but you don't want to shortcut them and just declare yourself winner)

1 like 0 RTs

so modal confusion here would be either: - treating a game like it has to be won at all costs - treating something that matters like it's just an attachment to be transcended eg Buddha referring to his son as "fetter" James Carse's Finite & Infinite Games is relevant here

2 likes 0 RTs

I have the sense that @vervaeke_john & @m_ashcroft would have some very interesting conversations to have, as the Expanding Awareness stuff dovetails quite richly with a lot of what I'm hearing in this podcast

@HephaistosF but trying to get someone else to notice that they're in such a frame and break out is essentially enacting such a frame, which is almost always a weaponization

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

In my experience, people trying to wake each other up directly, whatever that means, and no matter how spiritually wise they feel in that moment, tend to be doing it in part out of discomfort with being with the "asleep" person. I've been on both sides of this countless times.

Could a new way of valuing density lead to truly affordable housing? Here’s how changing policy could help.

@UBC I saw this and got excited thinking it might be about Land Value Tax but it seems to be... the opposite? Can't just "control prices" directly. Supply & demand gonna do their thing. But you can drive prices down by making rentseeking not profitable. See astralcodexten.substack.com/p/your-book-re…

6 likes 0 RTs

@UBC > to solve the affordability crisis, we should be looking at how policy to densify cities results in inflated land prices. That means the benefits of density go to landowners, not renters. Densifying cities is what cities are about. The issue is the land is too profitable.

2 likes 0 RTs

@UBC The land is profitable because: 1. you can rent it for far more than it costs to hold it. property taxes are tiny compared to the actual value of the land to the public 2. thus, you can also sell it at profit since someone else will want to rent it for more than it costs to hold

2 likes 0 RTs

@UBC > “[...] double the density of the land, suddenly that land doubles in value. All that advantage goes to whoever is lucky enough to own the land.” The trick with LVT is that the land is valued highly before it's even developed, & taxed at such rates. So no longer lucky to hold!

@haideralmosawi @devvnomad @arvidkahl I also have a thread pointing at how you need both goals & systems! (Although "plans", as in the OP are yet different and indeed you actually kinda don't need plans although you do need a theory of change, ie a model of why your system will do the thing.)

Dee W Hock @deewhock ·

Response to my post of May 10th wondering why this site had so few followers and if it should be continued was huge, and overwhelmingly positive, resulting in a huge increase in followers, and expressed desire that it continue, and just so it shall be.

3 likes 0 RTs

@Coscorrodrift @RichDecibels I tried opening up a conversation here about it but given that he is probably not checking notifications (or directly checking replies to his tweets) he presumably hasn't seen my replies. An interesting self-reinforcing situation!

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@deewhock In my experience, most of the value of Twitter is in the conversations that emerge here. I would ask: 1. Who do you want to talk to?  (whether specific individuals or categories like "people creating chaordic organizations") 2. What kinds of conversations do you want to have?

1 like 0 RTs

@Coscorrodrift @RichDecibels "makes me wonder if the site should be continued" this is a hilarious take misparsed as "should we shut down twitter.com" but it's pretty clear from his other uses of the word "site" that he's referring to his microblog, hosted on twitter

Dee W Hock @deewhock ·

I have little or no confidence in the logistics of this Twitter site. Notifications show a steady stream of new followers, but the total is stuck at 21K. It is difficult to recall, edit and post new observations twice a week, which makes me wonder if the site should be continued.

@innerchildscre1 now, some things you do might cause them to form generalizations about you, including generalizations that sound kind of essential (eg "shy" or "asshole") but that's all still a function of interface+their model any expectation of betrayal they have is about the interface

Thread · Facts about Complice, the intentionality app

> what's (legitimately) good about Complice that not enough people know? (from @s_r_constantin) complice.co is the intentionality app I built and have been iterating on for years. it helps people take small steps towards big goals thread of facts about complice!

6 likes 1 RT

complice started as entirely email-based. you'd email in your list of intentions for the day, then your list of outcomes at the end of the day. only later was a database added to record these, then a website, then login. intentions→outcomes is still the core workflow!

0 likes 0 RTs

on complice, you have a list of things you can check off, called "intentions", but it's very different from an ordinary to-do list, since it's fresh every day if you don't do something today, it slides into the past, rather than staying on the list & growing stale!

0 likes 0 RTs

complice is also one of the only listy apps that encourages you to log not just things you're planning to do but also other things that happened spontaneously during your day! you can do that midday (start an item with '+' and it'll be checked off already) or at the end

0 likes 0 RTs

it's super satisfying to realize that a bunch of stuff you didn't even set out to do has happened and made some sort of difference re something you care about not everything worth doing takes effort!

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

I want to find the things that are worth doing & where it'd be harder   for me NOT to do them than to do them.

1 like 0 RTs

what makes it so satisfying to add stuff is you can see what it all adds up to each intention is tagged towards whatever big-picture goal(s) it relates to, and then when it's reflection time, the progress is separated out by goal see what's 🚀 & what needs more ♥️

0 likes 0 RTs

then there's weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly reviews they're all optional (unlike GTD where if you don't do them the system breaks down) and they're also based on seeing the progress you've made towards each goal & reflecting on next steps

0 likes 0 RTs

that's the core. what else? probably lots of people don't know that complice has coworking rooms with video (& no audio, for focus) most of these are pomodoro-based 🍅 so that you can clearly chat during breaks but you can also make custom schedules! complice.co/rooms

complice not only has a hotkey for almost every feature, it also has hotkeys for at least half a dozen hidden features. I'm constantly testing out new stuff, and it often starts out buried under hotkeys, to a) not clutter the UI b) keep it not-discoverable while likely to change

0 likes 0 RTs

complice is one of the only web apps I'm aware of that doesn't just have dark theme but supports: 🌜 automatic darkening at night & lightening during the day 🌞 (maximizes friendliness & readability at all times!) blog.complice.co/post/145832019…

1 like 0 RTs

I'm sorta tempted at this point to just name everything from complice.co/features but that feels outside the spirit of the original prompt incidentally, when I first felt into the prompt what mostly came to mind was just "random facts re complice", not per se *good* stuff

0 likes 0 RTs

the random facts are kinda good tho! eg complice's day doesn't tick over at midnight everybody knows it's still "thursday" til either you sleep or the sun comes up & this is important since the daily workflow shifts modes when the day changes (defaults to 4am; can customize)

1 like 0 RTs

Thread · Noticing someone's blindspot as unacknowledged control systems · 4 of 5 tweets

what it feels like to notice someone's blindspot is that you notice that their control systems seem to be controlling for something they're systematically unaware of impossible to be certain what someone is controlling for exactly, but you can notice what resists perturbation

32 likes 4 RTs

concrete example: if someone always has an excuse for not doing something but they act like each excuse is just a one-off thing then you'll naturally sorta detect they have some resistance to doing the thing that they can't seem to acknowledge (to you, if not also to themselves)

12 likes 0 RTs

importantly—don't assume you know anything about the NATURE of the resistance! it could be on many different levels of abstraction: - they might have a resistance to some element they falsely assume must be part of the thing - they might just not want to be told what to do - &+

@ElodesM a steelman for it would be something about saying the obvious, but I guess imx when I say the obvious people aren't like "so true" they're either like "wtf that's not obvious to me" or if it's a useful tautology "huh. how tf had I not noticed that?"

people will always give you the feedback you need but they won't always give it to you in ways you'll be able to hear in fact usually the feedback we most need is the feedback we're worst at hearing (given how ppl know how to say it) for reasons that are obvious on reflection

@quotidiania Yeah! I've found it really helpful as a model. I'm now quite fluent in both conversational styles, having grown up high-involvement then spent much of my adulthood immersed in a very attuned high-considerateness mode. They're both lovely and I kinda want everyone to learn both.

@sashachapin I also don't really have a running inner monolog. I mostly think in pictures, unless I'm simulating a conversation. So that might be why I have trouble relating to the concept of a "self conflict".

@BrianSaetre @sashachapin one way to pose it would be "do you ever experience procrastination?" or this thing:

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

you know that thing where you spend a lot of time NOT doing something? like you can't actively do anything else (spontaneously nor decisively) because you're supposed to be doing the thing, but you're also not doing the thing because of some conflict/resistance

@sashachapin without negating the idea that there might some fraction of people who've achieved enough environment-self fit to kinda just do stuff I would love if you asked the 10%ish folks if they ever procrastinate, or experience this thing:

@sashachapin I guess the quoted tweet explicitly says "because of some conflict/resistance" but there might be another way to point at it. Like basically do they always feel like they're doing something that makes sense?

Replying to @DaveCBeck

@DaveCBeck @Chiliandgarlic @sashachapin yeah the Perceptual Control Theory model points out that sustained external conflict (of a frustrating kind, not sports) usually requires internal conflict, otherwise you'd either: - just go all out and win - just find a different way to achieve your goal, without opposition

@RichDecibels @euvieivanova I see your point. Though maybe clarifying: sovereignty of what? most mainstream memeplexes deny that we're the sovereigns of our own experiences, desires, problems, & understandings, and that needs reclaiming for ourselves and respecting for others

@RichDecibels @euvieivanova Obviously (afaict) all of those knowings, meanings, feelings, etc, are culturally constructed and can't exist in the absence of the context of other people, but if you feel something, you feel it—and nobody gets to tell you otherwise!

@spiral_virus Hanzi Freinacht has an interesting take on shame as internalized disdain/contempt/ridicule. I disagree with him on some of the implications (I think all negative emotions are bad for steering) but the model provided me some useful food for thought. metamoderna.org/another-kind-o…

@spiral_virus I would in general recommend the Coherence Psychology Institute's stuff for grokking internal dynamics quite generally, though they don't have much specifically about shame. If you can get past the cheesy clip-art, this is an excellent simple overview: amzn.to/32O2hJe

@spiral_virus re negative emotions as bad for steering, I go into this in much more depth here:

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@cosimia_ > difference between negative and positive motivation? Have thought lots about this. Seems there is, both inherently to any feedback system and specifics to human psychology implementation. It's adaptive for fear to overpower desire: those who don't flee don't survive.

been thinking about this more, in conjunction with @visakanv's "focus your time and energy on what you want to see more of" which i increasingly believe is the most important talking point on twitter atm gonna thread several thoughts working towards a rough model of depression

quoting @QiaochuYuan: when people say they don't want to be inundated with "negativity" what they mean is that they don't want to feel powerless. it's confusing terminology tho because in this sense the opposite of "negativity" is not "positivity," it's action

The part of the conversation *before* our recording involves us discussing her & Bill Powers' speculations about a potential 12th level to the PCT hierarchy... 🤫 ...which relates to Donella Meadows' "the power to transcend paradigms"

Leverage Point 1: the power to transcend paradigms to realize that NO paradigm is “true” to “get” at a gut level the paradigm that there are paradigms, & see that that itself is a paradigm, and to regard that whole realization as devastatingly funny to let go into Not Knowing

@nickcammarata @drossbucket @m_ashcroft @metaLulie @goblinodds @mattgoldenberg i haven’t been following this conversation carefully but i’ll just report that i continue to find the concept of “memory editing” deeply violating for me personally, which is not commentary on whether anyone besides me ought to use it

@QiaochuYuan @nickcammarata @drossbucket @m_ashcroft @metaLulie @goblinodds @mattgoldenberg yeah I think @QiaochuYuan & I are functionally making the case that we (& many others) have parts who reject the entire process if framed as "editing", even if there's something good about it, thus for such people a different frame is required for full-fractal buy-in.

@andy_matuschak I suspect a lot of us who do this rapidly burn out on the lifestyle because it's really hard to do independent self-directed research, and if you're not careful it turns into a drifty malaise that draws one back to a more structured worklife.

@DRMacIver @andy_matuschak people need to hire assistants/mentees instead of going to college, 18-25yos could be working for 30-40yos, learning a ton from the up-close interactions (assuming these people actually have a decent amount of money, not just enough to live on)

@DRMacIver @andy_matuschak an early boss of mine commented that vital to his startup's success was that early on they hired some co-op students (aka "interns") and then suddenly it was so much more real that they had to show up for work every day and set priorities

3 likes 0 RTs

@DRMacIver @andy_matuschak you can make your own structure! (there are other ways to do this too; I would have failed at building complice.co if I hadn't (a) had a primitive version of the tool itself, and (b) had a few customers from the beginning)
