yo @brianluidog, I'm getting into this "flow on demand" thing, and wondering if you can give an example or two of this step—both how it goes if you do it, and what would happen if you didn't: > Preparing follow-up tasks addresses the subconscious worry about "what's next" that can pull me out of flow as I near completion. I decide in advance what I'll work on after this session, which creates a psychological safe landing zone.

When people attribute injustice and tragedies of the past to "ignorance," I think this is mistaken in an important way. It's almost never a true lack of knowledge, but rather false knowledge or pretend knowledge resulting from pathological methods, that is at fault. This is

quoting @literalbanana: "What we call their ignorance was the received philosophy and wisdom of their day, accepted generally by the great scholars...taught in the universities, recognized in law and in medicine...and carried out in the proceedings of public tribunals and legislative assemblies." https:

yea; a lot of the “best” instructions fall on confused ears. as a result we “require” tedious elaborations. hundreds of pages or years of “no, not like this,” “no, not like that”, “the instruction did not say to do that”, etc etc etc

@sharifshameem Oh finally! I rigged up my own version of this for AI augmented coaching, also using discord. A dedicated product would be cool. Why has it been 2+y and no one's done this? x.com/sharifshameem/…

quoting @sharifshameem: @dmvaldman not a bad idea, the first prototype was a discord bot which worked decently well, but you quickly run into many limitations, (you can’t do token streaming due to message edit rate limits, etc)

@ChrisChipMonk @sharifshameem yeah I've prototyped this in a few variations but haven't released it yet I think a big piece of why it hasn't been released is that releasing AI tools either costs you $ for tokens or requires getting users to pay. building tiny apps/demos wasn't like that pre-LLM

@Malcolm_Ocean chatgpt had an easier time, not spoiling more in public. why tho

@aleksil79 it was a test of whether there were ways to scramble text that would make it easy for LLMs to parse while looking like noise (not even necessarily encrypted signal) to humans and the answer is definitely yes; this was my best attempt so far.

honestly something that has irritated me is that this is not true for me. whatever immediate psychological benefit is supposedly available from working out is not a thing I've found, and so all my motivation has to be to enjoy the act or to stay healthy

@__justplaying Pretty privilege tends to function because underlying it is the secret/explicit expectation that there will be sexual reward. When the reward doesn’t come, there is trouble. This means that the privilege comes at a cost that most people wouldn’t pay if they had the choice.

@AnalogWhole @__justplaying I think that's true at the extremes but I've also noticed I just prefer spending time around people who I enjoy looking at more, on the margin. and this must have some effect

0 likes 0 RTs

@AnalogWhole @__justplaying also something like, if I have attractive (in any dimension, not just physical) friends, they're more likely to be able to attract other people who are more attractive (on all dimensions) so to some extent, being prettier can translate into having cooler parties

no reason you couldn't train an LLM to do previous-token prediction instead, and then you get a simulator that finds causes instead of effects

what i want is simple, really. i just want every part of the experiential field to be singing in perfect harmony with every other part, a universal angelic choir of existence in which every voice is perfectly distinct and also perfectly blended together in exaltation

It's been ~1 year since I updated the tacit knowledge video directory. Today, I added 32 new videos! The most interesting videos are below.

quoting @parconley: I spent 60+ hours finding 78 tacit knowledge videos. After going viral last year, my LW post is the Schelling point for sharing the type of vid Richard is talking about. If curious, check out the vids and pls share videos of this type in the comments! https://t.co/Gcok46bDOg ht

@parconley @utotranslucence we gotta add this to our video archive

coworker said his son started a presentation in school by going "certainly! here's a presentation about [topic] you can use" and got so embarrassed he went home LMAOOOOOOOO

@justalexoki yeah as a joke this is HILARIOUS like imagine if you say this at the start of the presentation, but then you show your notes you're reading from and they don't say that

@Malcolm_Ocean Hmmm, fine for pre-training. But how do you do backwards RL? I suppose you give it a completion and reinforce it for finding the true cause, or at least the cause you prefer?

@eshear yeah I posted this without thinking about more than the base model I think it sort of depends what problems you're trying to solve with it. and maybe in practice most of them are pretty reversible.

0 likes 0 RTs

@eshear occurs to me that like... with a lot of transformer training, mightn't it be possible to get more data out of your existing data by rotating/reversing it? one might assume that already happens (either manually or automatically) but evidence is no:

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

wtf image models cannot handle "a guy doing a handstand". incredible shape rotation problems this is google's imagen 3. they look okay for a beat til you realize somebody took the barbie apart and put it back together backwards

1 like 0 RTs

@eshear like I'm pretty sure that if all of the shirtless guy images had been fed into midjourney upside down as well, captioned as "[whatever the original caption was] image upside down" then this would actually increase its understanding of anatomy despite no handstand physics

I've been enjoying timing my 10mo baby climbing up the two flights of steps at our apartment so far: 3:48 4:17 3:25 3:48 ...but that last one would have been sub-3mins if she hadn't tried to go back down near the end!

Wow. One year ago Syria was a glorified country-sized IRGC base, and now it looks like they're joining the Abraham Accords. What a shift. More importantly, what a massive loss for the broken islamic regime in Iran.

@NiohBerg I don't know a lot about this, can you explain this part? genuinely curious > what a massive loss for the broken islamic regime in Iran. because it represents a break from "islamic brotherhood" vibes? or something more specific

The potential spread of the Abraham Accords has the potential to reshape our world. In my lifetime, this may be the first chance for a Muslim reformation I’ve ever known. We’ll see.

@proteinwisdom can you say more about how this nudges towards a Muslim reformation? I've been curious for awhile about how Islam might get out of its long-time attractor basin
