post author has ethics 100% backwards the whole point of talking about ethics *at all* as opposed to just *how to be awesome* is precisely about how kindly you relate to the other, the not-yourself (and I would say your capacity to create win-wins, not altruistic sacrifice)

if your concept of what's good to do involves negating or ignoring your own drives & desires, you are making a very fundamental confusion. those are the very place from which goodness comes from—the question is how to create win-wins between people

So much of what we are is constituted by self-fulfilling beliefs. The upside is you can (sometimes) give yourself mental & physical superpowers by believing you already have them. Kids experiment with this all the time by playing pretend

@heynibras exactly what I needed, thanks. I've been aiming to do this but it's been hard to operationalize the "between things, pause" and this might help 2+ mins sounds like a lot when the things are small, but right now I'm usually not hitting even 2s, so...

@the_aiju Christian hell is like that too only you get about 90 years to try and not go there but it's still your choice to go there.

@BreatheLesss @the_aiju are you saying it's the same in all the other ways though it feels to me like it has a different nature. concretely: getting out of buddhist hell in this sense doesn't require following a particular doctrine, obeying, or even per se "being moral"

buddhist hell is a much more striking concept to me than christian hell. while the damned are simply trapped in christian hell, those comdemned to buddhist hell can leave at any moment — all they have to do is simply stop being angry about being in there. they just won’t.

@the_aiju and it makes sense that they won't! there is wisdom they don't know how to keep if they leave wisdom that includes full empathy for those who are in there and full respect for those choosing not to leave and all this makes this in-some-sense-simple choice not so simple

@smolderingwurm @the_aiju more precisely, it is POSSIBLE, although difficult, to get out while staying in touch with the clarity of all you can see while in there so there often seems to be a choice between peace & clarity and for some people, they'd rather suffer with the clarity than be free and forget

Thread · New Year's Eve as a celebration of chronos time

new years eve, as currently practiced, is among other things a celebration of chronos time and coordination via standards I watched from a hilltop as hundreds of people set off fireworks at the same moment. a collective presence experience: NOW.

QC @QiaochuYuan ·

what makes it real is that we decided it's real together. the new year is a collective spell we all cast. you are participating in a real flow of collective energy, that acquires power from how we do it every year. magic is real and it always has been. happy new year

quoting @holy_schnitt: I know that there’s no real difference between today and tomorrow but damn if i’m not a slut for the symbolism of it all! a blank page! a fresh start!! new year new me!!!!

⏰ chronos time is named after one of the greek time gods, and refers to linear predictible fungible clock-time 🍂 kairos time is flexible, fluid, seasonal time: mythic time, where moments are eternities and synchronicities are abundant

3 likes 0 RTs

chronos can feel kind of stifling if you see it as controlling and constricting you but I noticed NYE that it's also possible to see it as sort of a scaffold, that you can fall out of (into mythic time) and then come back to when you want it

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

one of the sad things about the world is that attempts to point the way out of victim mindset often appear to people stuck in victim mindset to be victim-blaming this legit sucks. I'm not sure what to do about it, but I'm working on it. seems it involves patience & scaffolds?

3 likes 0 RTs

oh also the way that "original spin" shows up in relation to buddhist hell is essentially victim blaming the idea that because (in some sense) the person COULD just walk out, that they therefore SHOULD do so and are to blame for their suffering and others' 2nd-hand suffering

@diviacaroline huhhhh say more about that difference? I think I know what you mean, like when I'm in a very overtly externally-busy context and then suddenly I get a few spare hours or whatever, it's like "oh man I have a chance to DO STUFF, LFG!"

Hmmm I guess one approach would be to something like... budget deep work time in 1h, 2h, 4h, 8h blocks, and try to have say 8h of each of them every week and then I can move them around but I commit to making them happen At Some Point each week.

@ESYudkowsky @eshear QC didn't say "that the future outcomes are ~infinitely good or infinitely bad", he said "that doing a thing is". and that's maybe important here? the argument cites the future outcomes, sure, but the sense created in many people is "I MUST DO X" not "this matters a lot"

few realize this, but the human species has different sexes, biologically, than it did before hormonal birth control and we're still at the very early stages of adapting to the impacts of that

79 likes 3 RTs

the word "woman" existed 100 years ago, but the creature it referred to at that time basically doesn't exist now (in developed countries) merely the *option* to unilaterally take birth control already makes women now different from women before

I use "biologically" in the first tweet because I'm trying to tap a certain intuition; it's technically false but it might as well be true, because human biology doesn't exist separate from human memetics

both social punishment and physical consequences can be treated as a natural part of the learning process, or as something you should have averted in the first place up to you

I feel more whole, simple, like a person, less other, less oriented towards "race". and, as I noted last year, less implicitly racist.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

I've recently been noticing that I don't have a way to conceive of anybody as "white" without it increasing my racial prejudice it's a fake category whose main (only?) uses are: - justify white supremacy or defaultness - blame people based on skin color both of which I reject

3 likes 0 RTs

whenever there's a race dropdown, I select other, or check no boxes if there's no other box. recently it was "list up to 3 racial/ethnic groups you feel are appropriate to your heritage". I put "Scottish" & "Canadian" (I forget which order)

3 likes 0 RTs

I don't identify as white anymore. it was never a particularly salient feature, but I felt pressure to adopt it... ...and I think it's *good* to stop identifying as "default race". but bad to identify with a fake race invented for the purpose of racism

@Malcolm_Ocean race was a highly relevant category for most of the united states' history it doesn't disappear overnight, even if its original basis was "fake", because those centuries of existence on their own leave a marked impact

@AskYatharth I agree but I think the concept is toxic and we should destroy it and use it only in scare-quotes or in phrases that don't say "white person" but instead acknowledge who is doing the assigning of whiteness eg I would say "I can pass as white if someone is using that category"

the heritage of whiteness as a concept isn't anything to be proud of—it's made of racism, as much as having a specific culture—and that's why "white pride" is racist

@Malcolm_Ocean yea, wrt "pure meaning": - logic is a symbolic interpretation of meaning - emotion is an identifiable response to meaning both are downstream evolutions/chain-reactions to the pure MEANING itself, which can get all genetically twisty if you're not careful with your steps

@__drewface reminds me of Alfred Korzybski trying to replace "think" and "feel" with "have a semantic reaction" but this was too cumbersome so I tried to shorten it to "sem". didn't catch on much even in my own notes/thoughts/sems

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Sem: a tentative proposal for a verb to replace "think" & "feel" and help avoid mind-body dualism in daily utterances. "I sem that X" = "I think/feel that X" "I'm semming" = "I'm thinking/feeling"

having trouble finding an adequate definition for "life" that doesn't include companies and cities and I feel like this is sort of obvious when considered, but then we go back to acting like it's not true I don't know what the implications are of this

16 likes 2 RTs

obviously, I'm a living thing. I'm also made of a bunch of living things. and in some sense, but not 100%, I can't live without them nor them without me but {me, the guy walking down the street outside} is not a living thing. it lacks the wholeness / center.

6 likes 0 RTs

companies and cities definitely have a center but they also have components that aren't living, like money and buildings and furniture and roads and so on but if you zoom in enough, my body also has nonliving elements 🤔

6 likes 0 RTs

my guess is there ARE key diffs between companies/cities and uhhh bio life, and this is part of why the slippage occurs eg you, like most people, have probably committed a crime (jaywalking, speeding, copyright-bs). but you're not "a criminal" in the ordinarily-connotated sense!

likewise, "life" connotes a bunch of things, including: - capacity for experience, suffering (moral patience?) - needs to breathe & eat & shit - evolved, has a genome - it is wrong to end it - ....probably more

@Malcolm_Ocean As I see it given how large the search space is and how time and energy intensive it is to explore it the expected time before that happens is decades.

@MatjazLeonardis wait you think that 99% of people are in the happiest possible situation they could realistically find given any reasonable amount of moves? or are we using "randomly" differently? in practice nobody is capable of making a properly random move even if they try; always steering

@jonnybhoy219 Yeah it seems like many people think the fraction of lives they'd hate is close to 0% and I think it's pretty close to 100%. That appears to be the difference.

@MatjazLeonardis @jonnybhoy219 is anybody suggesting people swap lives with others at random? I'm talking about single concrete changes: - move out of that city/block/apartment you hate - break up with your gf/bf - stop picking up calls from that annoying acquaintance - shut down your business - quit your job

The reason for this is that your current life is the result of hundreds of decisions, most of which weren't random but optimised for something. Even if there were large errors in all that it is difficult not to accumulate at least some things that fit you in the process.

@MatjazLeonardis they weren't random but they were made with less info than you have now you thought you'd like this job/relationship/city/hobby but it turns out you don't! if you don't reconsider those sometimes, you are DEFINITELY not living a well-optimized life

@Malcolm_Ocean @jonnybhoy219 Yes so the point is many of these things need to be replaced with something. If this replacement is random it will be better than what you left behind <5% of the time.

but the replacement isn't random. it can't possibly be. famously, people tend to date someone who has the opposite traits of the ones that annoyed/frustrated/disappointed them about their previous partner which is a sign of learning. not necessarily net-better, but non-random

Thread · Arc browser's broken hotkeys and incoherent metaphors

was already sick of @ArcInternet browser and planning to switch and the final straw was when I hit cmd+w a few times to close out all the open tabs in a given space... and when it ran out of tabs in that space it closed the entire browser

2 likes 0 RTs

now arguably this is just code they left in because that's the behavior of an empty browser *window* in other browsers, but there's also no such thing as an empty browser window, there's only a window with one tab close last tab, lose window

0 likes 0 RTs

but Arc's whole deal is that it doesn't work that way. there's no new tab page, but it sometimes enters a mode where there's no tab at all so I think somebody actively added this behavior

0 likes 0 RTs

so this behavior of cmd+w shows some mix of: - a lack of attention to the meaning of the metaphors they are trying to employ - a blatant disregard for not overloading hotkeys to do different things in different-but-similar situations, when other hotkeys already exist for that

1 like 0 RTs

I already knew they had that disrespect for serious hotkey users, bc they fucking overloaded cmd+z to "undo" closing a tab IFF there was nothing to cmd+z on the page itself. but there's ALREADY cmd-shift-t to unclose!!! let me hit cmd+z however many times I want inside the page

0 likes 0 RTs

likewise, in today's situation, there's already a hotkey on mac (by default cmd+q but I changed it to cmd+shift+w because I don't like to quit that easily) for closing the whole window!!!! if I wanted to close the fucking window I would fucking use the close-window hotkey!

0 likes 0 RTs

this is the hotkey equivalent of if your toaster, if you ran it without any toast in it, would unplug itself it's the hotkey equivalent of going to a restaurant, ordering "burger with no tomato and extra onions" and they come back "no onions so we gave you extra tomato"

2 likes 0 RTs

I wonder if there's a fool somewhere at @browsercompany who thinks that hotkeys should always do something in all situations, and is going around adding fallback behaviors for situations where the default behavior isn't relevant

0 likes 0 RTs

they were like "these are your SPACES. you can think of a space as like a ROOM" 🤨 bruh then why didn't you call it a "room"? answer: because it's not. it really doesn't act like a room. the metaphor doesn't hold up. it's incoherent.

0 likes 0 RTs

anyway, I am getting tempted to try to build a replacement for browsers myself, which is kind of terrifying tbh as it's such a large project I've been chewing on it for awhile but am gradually accepting that nobody else is gonna do it for me

thesis: when websites were passive, having browsers be a neutral tool that let you view them was appropriate. but now that many websites are out-to-get-you, we need a human-web-interface that actively takes your side and protects your attention & intention

23 likes 0 RTs

now trying out @Stack_HQ's browser, reading their philosophy these two highlighted sentences are in complete conflict imo. the whole point of having different contexts is their separateness & distance: not how *instantly* you can switch between them!!

4 likes 0 RTs

if I made a browser or browser-replacement, whatever equivalent of spaces it had would maybe offer some ability to easily *send* something to the other space to deal with later but actually switches spaces would take... 5 minutes? that seems about right

I can see a future where almost all the babies get a long sleeper gene put in and then at a certain age they get to crispr in the short sleeper one. Maybe parents will fight online about whether tweens should have it or if that would be degenerate, like with phones

quoting @ouranometrian2: The gene therapy I'll get when it comes out. 10 year old me would be so happy to be a step closer to being a vampire

@diviacaroline Huh, interesting that something like this wouldn't have already been somewhat selected for as a thing that would just change with age I wonder what else is like this

@Evolving_Ego In my case I have become more willing to say obviously true things, even if they're the sorts of things "only racists say" or whatever. Seems key to distinguish"politically incorrect" from "endorsing doctrines of discrimination"

@Evolving_Ego But also if someone isn't thinking for themselves, then when certain things become more obvious as they age, they may adopt a different worldview as a result, without that being actual paradigmatic progress on their part:

Thoughts are pretty much analogous to music in that you need to listen carefully to others, in order to fully develop your capacity to have your own

@Jeanvaljean689 Maybe tho also hermit archetype. When Bobby McFerrin decided to become a musician he deliberately avoided other music for a couple years in order to develop a distinct sound/voice, and it totally worked.

@goblinodds Woah wait. You're talking about memetic ecology. Strategic interventions to bring psychofauna populations into balance from a dynamic systems perspective. There's a whole branch of sociology here that I've never thought about.

@HamishDoodles @goblinodds I've been tweeting a lil about this as "offramps" but yeah there's a whole thing about how to creates ways to climb out of extreme memetic pits to more balanced places

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@stephlepp Ooooh, this is very cool. Dovetails with something I'd been thinking about which is how to create an offramp or series of offramps for different extreme viewpoints. Your thread here seems like a starting point for a manual on how to do that. twitter.com/Malcolm_Ocean/…

@HamishDoodles @goblinodds and one piece is that people need some mix of: - new experiences that make new things obvious (hard when current memeplex prevents it) - new memeplex that acknowledges the things currently obvious to them AND some other things the extreme memeplex denies

With the understanding that the subconscious does not register negations, should I change my goodnight message to something besides "you are not inferior to anyone?" Poll in next tweet:

quoting @prerat: a room with absolutely no elephants in it https://t.co/j3qRJSDlE4

@VividVoid_ Negation is sometimes useful but in this particular case it does feel a bit waluigi-ish, summoning inferiority to dismiss it I like your images and gns but have long found the phrase very distasteful

@vividvoid i think it's better as a negation tbh. reason: ucs does only register positive contents, but negation opens a space to allow those contents to emerge ("if im not inferior, what am i? hmmm") vs explicit positive contents which you either see yourself in or don't

@qorprate @VividVoid_ I agree with this tho I also just like, don't want to see the word "inferior" that often

Christians believe god created earth 10,000 years ago. I think this story - like the apple in the garden of Eden - is actually a metaphor for the development of tension based self referential meta cognition that now dominate human civilization. Back of the envelope pet theory:

quoting @nickcammarata: maybe non-awakening is what caused human foom? a gravity well of tension that constantly points you towards your thoughts while simultaneously tricking you into thinking you’re in your head seems really useful for humans, less so for animals, if they have fewer thoughts
