Thread · Frame battles and critiquing in service of understanding

thinking about frame battles I think most arguments about personal or complex topics would benefit from each person assuming that the other has something important & meaningful to tell them but can only speak in Klingon (or some other language you don't know) #metarationality

11 likes 0 RTs

the key idea here is basically defaulting strongly to an assumption that you don't actually know what the person means, rather than thinking that you know what they mean and they're wrong after all, they think they're right, so if you really knew what they meant, you would too🤯

7 likes 0 RTs

the previous tweet is oversimplified—of course it is! 🦜 the joys of compression! 🦚 part of the magic of twitter, when it works, actually, is that common knowledge of a character limit encourages a recognition of the very principle I'm talking about here 🕊️

2 likes 0 RTs

okay, so > after all, they think they're right, so if you really knew what they meant, you would too I tentatively posit: 🟢by the point when you've fully understood what someone else is saying, either it will make sense to both of you or they'll have also realized it's confused

3 likes 0 RTs

this notion requires that as part of ensuring you understand, you also voice every part of your own understandings that seems to contradict what they know (by this definition of "fully understood", most conversations don't reach full understanding, in case that's not clear)

3 likes 0 RTs

to elaborate: you have to voice those critiques in order to be sure you understand, because otherwise you'll get an understanding that still seems false, as opposed to one that seems true, which means that since their understanding seems true, you won't have understood! 🙃

2 likes 0 RTs

but of course maybe you have the missing piece of information! in which case, by you voicing what it is that you know that is currently preventing you from understanding what they understand as they do (including the part where it seems true!) they will learn from you instead

2 likes 0 RTs

this "critiquing in service of understanding" is a very different concept of criticism than we're used to. it takes for granted the other person knows something and does not attempt to fight their knowing knowings are sacred!

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Healing from trauma amounts to learning that it is okay to know what you know, and feel what you feel. — Bessel van der Kolk (quoted from my notes of an out-loud remark, so maybe slightly paraphrased, hence no " marks)

not fighting someone's knowing doesn't mean not saying "I think when people hear you say ABC, they'll think you mean BAD, and thus I think it's misleading/dangerous/etc to say ABC in that way. But I'd love to help articulate what you do mean." twitter.com/chaosprime/sta…

oh whoa! as I was feeling into the type-of-conversation described above, I just realized that it's a deeper and properly meta-rational articulation of what it really means to be honing in the sense I describe in this blog post! malcolmocean.com/2016/05/honing…

Listening to a groovy album but it's almost entirely break-up songs with an obsession of fear-you're-with-somebody-else. What's that fear? Fear of being replaceable? New partner makes breakup real? Seems dysfunc from both poly & mono frames 🤔

Musing about creating a colorblind emoji font that literally replaces all of the peopley people codepoints with yellow smiley-shaped entities. So 👮 would look more like 🤠. (I considered a color other than yellow but most have meanings already: 😡🥵😈👿🥶🤢😨😱)

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

I also think making yellow peoply people was a mistake emoji-wise. As soon as they have hair, you've lost it. Ok: 🤠 Not ok: 👮 Yellow hands should have been kept to go with the yellow smiley color which I'm pretty sure was chosen because yellow is considered a happy color.

Stupid question: why are there multi-person emoji for families and not for teams? I can combine 👩+❤️+👨 to represent a couple (👩‍❤️‍👨) but I can't combine 👩‍💻🤝👨‍⚕️into a single emoji to represent a medtech team. To be clear, I think both are a terrible idea.

My proposal is that for a person to be resilient against both stress and undue persuasion, they should sit on a three-legged stool. Three different bases of support, identity, meaning & help. Family, workplace, church (traditionally) Friend group, Circling, sangha (now?)

@utotranslucence Reflecting on this I think the way I would approach this would look something like: 🏡 the people you live with 💼 the people you work with 💞 your mastermind mastermind = group for mutual support but not interdependent or closely entangled, so not fixated on changing each other

5 likes 0 RTs

@utotranslucence (mastermind could do things like circling or other relational/therapeutic practices. would ofc fail to be completely disentangled if members fall in love, move in together, cofound a business or hire each other... I think that would happen, so membership might need fluidity)

@quotidiania I think that the default result when people try to meet anger head-on is that someone ends up layering. So people are understandably defended. But the defendedness creates the very problem it's defending against, which is the meta-puzzle:

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

The paradox I'm currently in love with: 1. existing culture is fucked up in ways I'll collectively call "A" 2. "A" is trying to fuck you up 3. "A" = "people trying to protect from being fucked up by A" 4. thus to shift "A" to "B", one must protect against "A" without protecting

Part of what I find confusing about the whole thing is that the entire thread is indeed about the far-reaching consequences of bad actors, but way more the sort of thing I'd expect to read from someone who doesn't think more penalizing is really gonna help — which is my view.

1 like 0 RTs

Maybe this is (unconsciously) intentional? Designed to kinda pull people in who vibe with the initial statement, but then shift most of the emphasis onto a pretty different frame of the whole thing. Clever if so. Sry-not-sry if my thread blows ur cover🙃

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

I think that this onboarding pathways thing is really key. People stuck in shitty attractors need gradual steps, where the pathway starts with something that makes sense to them in terms of what they already know & understand. Best people to create = people who've been there?

0 likes 0 RTs

Another issue with punishment is that it's really hard to steer! You can't aim it, all you can do is say "away from here!" But in high-dimensional spaces, that's almost everywhere. So it's not stable unless it has somewhere to arrive.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@cosimia_ Part of the issue is (and this is why I say positive vs negative motivation are different in all systems) you can't AIM awayness based motivation. In 1-dimensional systems, this is fine because there's no aiming to do (as long as you don't go past the repulsor)

5 likes 0 RTs

@visakanv *obviously* knows this thing about role-models I talked about with @Conaw. that's kind of his whole thing

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@cosimia_ Talked with @Conaw last fall and he pointed out that this is why role models are so important. It's not enough to have a sense of which behaviors will get you punished (btw: reward is just the temporary relief of punishment). You need to have a multi-dimensional destination.

4 likes 0 RTs

re "reward is just the temporary relief of punishment" this is part of what's so important about developing self-respect if you have enough self-respect, others can't yank on you by promising respect in exchange for you doing something they want u don't

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@cosimia_ @Conaw "reward is just the temporary relief of punishment" might surprise; it connects with my remark at the top that most humans are in chronic fear. Reward represents temporary relief of that fear: don't worry, you're okay, you did the right thing—this time. Implicit threat.

3 likes 0 RTs

Anyway, it encourages me to see Visa also adding this important piece.

Visakan Veerasamy @visakanv ·

bad actors do need penalizing, but you have to be careful not to become a bad actor yourself in the process don't be so eager to wield the blade unless / until you're really sure of what you're doing and never be eager to summon demons (contempt) ever x.com/visakanv/statu…

does anybody keep a keyboard (piano) by their desk so they can noodle around while scrolling? tempted to do this

@visakanv It's amazing. I can't find a good photo of the finished set up but in 2019 I borrowed my friend's keyboard… …& built an extension for the stand so that it would be at the right height for my standing desk. (Have since moved, so can't take a pic now)

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

I had a bit of fluency with this implicit scale feel on the guitar, but being able to see all the notes on the keyboard is making a huge difference, as is having it next to my desk and reach-out-able-to-play-with-one-hand-while-reading vs 🎸 in corner of room.

@MasterTimBlais @goblinodds @thepericulum @acidshill it's possible to have full-body orgasms as a man various ways to approach it but the main one that has worked for me is: 1. get head from someone who loves giving it 2. relax everything as much as possible 3. gradually start breathing more intensely while muscles relaxed

5 likes 0 RTs

@MasterTimBlais @goblinodds @thepericulum @acidshill the effect, as far as I can tell, is that your parasympathetic nervous system is strongly activated by the relaxing (which on its own means indefinite pleasure without cumming) then your sympathetic gets more activated by the heavy breathing. both active at once is a whole thing!

@michaelcurzi Yeah, in practice the "no, by definition it's not that" has to be articulated uniquely to each person, for them to actually trust it. You have to figure out how to say it in their language. Which is a fractal of the whole eutopia puzzle! (same as this)

WHOA. Just accidentally discovered a gamechanging feature about WordPress. If you type a short url it automatically guesses which page or post you might be referring to based on the slug. I put in malcolmocean.com/ar and it took me to my archives page (normally /archives) 🧵

3 likes 0 RTs

afaict from 2 experiments, this is using some sort of slug-starts-with logic (slug is the part of the post/page url that is human readable) eg this post is /a-laptop-employed-as-a-nightlight/ and  /a  /a-laptop redirect to it, but  /nightlight 404s malcolmocean.com/2015/11/a-lapt…

this is gamechanging because it means I can link to any of my posts, from memory, without needing to look up the url, as long as I know what the slug starts with (uniquely!) ...in particular, you don't need to know the date, also!

1 like 0 RTs

I tested this on another wordpress site I know that's not even running the latest wordpress (v5.0.12) and it also works there. I'm not the sort of creature who enjoys looking up exactly when this change was made or what it's called, but I'd be curious to know it if you 🐇 ⬇️ 🕳️

@fortelabs nice. part of the puzzle with 2 & 5 is that pointing at these truths usefully (even internally) often requires constructing an entirely different frame than you're using already, so that you can actually see them.

Just ordered some new contact lenses and I'm experimenting with getting half 0.25 weaker than my current ones. They might be noticeably worse for being out in the big wide world (we'll find out!) but I'm sure they'll be just fine for days spent at my computer.

10 likes 0 RTs

The ones I have now are -3; I got half -2.75 and half -3 with this order. I had -3.25 a couple years ago and -3.5 before that. When I got the -3s, my A/B test on -3 vs -3.25 was an even split so I opted for less correction.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@then_there_was My contact lens prescription has improved by 0.25 every couple of years for the last few years, and I find this very encouraging. Seems it might be possible to gradually wean oneself off. (Could probably go faster than this)

I once tried asking about an optometrist about this theory and she politely told me it was complete bullshit. But I've seen remarkably little else to explain wtf else could cause worsening vision in youth. (have also heard "reading in dim light" 🤷)

Andrew Ruiz @then_there_was ·

@Malcolm_Ocean @theblanchard @azrirashid The basic premise is simple. If you wear progressively weaker prescription glasses, your vision will slowly improve over time. The same hormesis that caused axial elongation will cause the eyeball to shrink and adapt. But it’s a slow process.

boy i just really really like being able to loudly disagree with the text right next to the text [text says some dumb shit] NO THIS IS DUMB I DO NOT AGREE WITH THIS HERE IS HOW I CURRENTLY THINK IT ACTUALLY IS INSTEAD very sanity-inducing

So much is gonna become possible as people take learning into their own hands with media like articles & videos & interactive demos. And chavrusas. Being able to seriously question things, and have a fellow learning to question them with, seems to me a vital part of learning.

...and it now seems to me crazy-making that in a typical school or other learning context, the students are expected to just accept what the teacher says without being able to turn to their friend and go "this seems sus to me, what do you think?"

@MarcGafni has a thing a transition from pre-tragic to tragic to post-tragic consciousness (which intriguingly has a comedic shape 🎭) The realization of scarcity & suffering ends the naive pre-tragic experience, but there's further to go! marcgafni.com/from-pre-tragi…

Then maybe recall some happy moments from *earlier* bedtime reviews. Keep those unhappy moments firmly sandwiched between good ones. Also tell them about all the moments today when they made me and mom happy and how we love them. Then a bedtime story and wishing good night.

@xuenay the sandwich thing you pointed at here prompted me to tweet this: (something I've been thinking about a bit for awhile — I didn't come up with it I don't think, but I sort of rediscovered it in my own experience)

ah man I forgot about Tuesday #TwitterDayOff again my life doesn't have a lot of weekly rhythm and I don't have a reminder set, and it's felt less important as I haven't been on twitter as compulsively in the last month or two in the first place anyone want to take the mantle?

ie does someone else want to take on tweeting about #TwitterDayOff Tuesday and @-mentioning the folks who have participated in the past to see if they want to again?

So how's therapy going?

@ChanaMessinger Quite well, though slowly. Trying to untangle a meta-pattern that seems to somewhat resist uncovering things because it thinks I would be bad/abandoned if things got uncovered. Making headway.

Does anybody know the source to this? I'm sure I read it somewhere, maybe in a book or paper excerpt that @fortelabs tweeted a couple years ago.

@hmmmcurious Fear of uncertainty. This is the same mechanism that causes gamblers to gamble until their pockets are empty: now the uncertainty of "will I gamble more?" is gone. Similarly alcoholics taking their first drink: removes the uncertainty of "(when) will I drink today?"

Does anyone have a list of questions for people who want to live together, start a relationship, get married, or have kids? We have a lot of unspoken assumptions about the way things should be, and this can lead to *big* conflicts later I wanna stress test those assumptions!

@mesolude One huge one: under what conditions would you move to a different city? Which climates or regions would be yay vs ok vs no-go? doom if both people have strong constraints here and they aren't compatible (eg one "would defs move for dream job" & one "must stay in hometown")

1 like 0 RTs

@mesolude it's particularly relevant for marriage ofc, but it applies to trying to create community of any kind, honestly I've been thinking about this a lot recently in the context of my recent move from a long-time community out here to British Columbia (story) malcolmocean.com/2021/01/2020-f…

2021 vision I’ve shared with team since January but not tweeted: Replace the signal chats where I’ve gotten some of best advice from other founders with an Encrypted Multiplayer Mobile App For @RoamResearch Lot of other improvements and opportunities, but that’s my priority

@Conaw @RoamResearch Holy shit yes 💯 I have been wanting this. Just this week was trying to figure out where to have text comms among a small group that's not on the same slack anywhere, and we concluded: • Signal for coordination+notifications • Roam for actually discussing+modelling stuff

8 likes 0 RTs

@Conaw @RoamResearch But OBVIOUSLY this wants to be all in one place, and having that be totally integrated with Roam would be perfect. Stoked that it's in the pipeline for 2021.

Why is the GitHub forks view *so goddamn bad* at showing *why* somebody forked the repo? Seems like such an obvious win to be able to quickly check if someone has solved a problem you have or made some expansion you're considering making.

12 likes 0 RTs

This is sliiiiiiiigggghttly better. But still close to useless most of the time, and unworkable when there are 100s of forks.

@hyperdiscogirl I like the former as well. Not sure I have enough experience with the latter to have a take, but I'd expect to potentially feel a bit awkward about it depending on the context.

@ChanaMessinger @hyperdiscogirl I liked: > In this book I refer to sources using female pronouns. A gender-neutral writing style felt less engaging to me in this context. Of course, people of all gender identities can be fully creative, yet I think of the role of source as having a powerful feminine energy.

@collinofzion Respect. I keep finding Twitter valuable but navigating that line of criticality where it's deeply worth it is tough (for many things, not just Twitter) and sometimes "no" is the answer. I bid you deep pleasure & solid returns wherever you choose to play & invest your attention.
