Thread · Auto-generated flashcards pull trivia instead of core insights · 5 of 6 tweets

got really excited about the automated anki-decks.com for generating some flashcards so I could better internalize core concepts from The Unaccountability Machine but it keeps pulling out trivia, or details from case studies that are completely irrelevant to core points

4 likes 1 RT

some of these are okay. but not like... good. they don't contain insights.

0 likes 0 RTs

this answer is PRECISELY beside the point. the whole point of the example and the entire book is that it doesn't really matter who ordered what—everybody was just following local policy!

0 likes 0 RTs

anyway what disturbs me is that these kinds of facts & flashcards   —totally irrelevant to me as an adult wanting to retain and integrate the insights I'm having reading this book—     feel disturbingly familiar to the kinds of things school would ask about

0 likes 0 RTs

note that some of these outputs are after I already gave a custom prompt to "ignore historical incidents, examples, trivia, facts, and focus on core insights, technical concepts, and arguments" or something like that curious how this system works under the hood

@Malcolm_Ocean @softmaxresearch I believe I have all of these already -- i wonder if they didn't make it to the shelf? i thought i clean-sweeped Beer

@eshear @softmaxresearch at a quick glance I don't see either of them, although I tweeted this from my phone without having actually re-checked (tUM is white & black on red, on the spine) (BotF is I think usually emerald green on white, on the spine)

Emmett Shear @eshear ·

Been building my Softmax library. The shelf is starting to feel good. Open to suggestions for what I’m missing.

0 likes 0 RTs

@eshear @softmaxresearch but yeah, I'm continuing to read tUM (which is a 2024 book, not by Beer but about his work and really fleshing out how corporations are like AIs) and it's defs super relevant to what you're doing. also @IvanVendrov.

0 likes 0 RTs

@eshear @softmaxresearch @IvanVendrov it's helping me get key intuitions about black boxes, and making me wonder WHY corporations tend to be relatively sociopathic compared to humans, if both are a form of intelligent life. less evolution time? lack of good pain signal? where DO you put the accountability?

4 likes 1 RT

@eshear @softmaxresearch @IvanVendrov like arguably it's something about the structure, but why? you could explore this bottom-up (are individuals trying to evade accountability, so they make heartless orgs?) or top-down (do the market/regulatory incentives favour profit-maximization, and singular-goal => evil?)

if a corporation is a person, then why can't you send a corporation to prison?

@PlayWithBeing I regularly can't remember by mid-afternoon whether I worked out that morning. I'll find myself thinking "didn't really do much today" and then I scan my mental timeline and go "oh, well at least I worked out"

@PlayWithBeing sometimes it does produce a kind of "I'm on a roll" vibe but mostly via the psychological satisfaction, same as any other solid move checked off early in the day, not via any sense that I've changed my physiology

puzzle I want to ask @AndyAyrey about based on his experience with @truth_terminal—when you post-train an LLM on dialogue between A & B, with the purpose of having it output B sections, does it train it equally to output A sections? if not, why not?

@Malcolm_Ocean @softmaxresearch @IvanVendrov Sending a corporation to prison = constraining its action space to only those operations required for its survival. No new business lines, no hiring beyond replacement, no new territories. Profits are confiscated beyond the needed to attract required capital.

@eshear @softmaxresearch @IvanVendrov seems like the right track, but don't those constraints basically ensure that it dies much sooner though? because it still has to compete in markets (unlike humans, who get fed in prison)

@Malcolm_Ocean @eshear @softmaxresearch @IvanVendrov Yes., and that is fine! Unlike humans, corporations don't have natural rights, and having them displaced in the market if they should not exist seems good. (Whereas some "death penalty" of disbanding them immediately seems like it would often be bad for the market as a whole.)

@davidmanheim @eshear @softmaxresearch @IvanVendrov my "but" here was not "but wouldn't that be cruel", it was more checking the fit of the prison metaphor! like the "constrain action space" I'm like "yeah that sounds like prison" but then I was like "hm it has this different implication tho maybe-kinda"

0 likes 0 RTs

@davidmanheim @eshear @softmaxresearch @IvanVendrov having said that—reading about this black box stuff in tUM, I'm less confident than I used to be that corporations oughtn't have natural rights! like why IS it that I have rights and my cells don't? (and of course this debate shows up in full force with abortion)

@sonikudzu @the_wilderless and maybe specifically the part where I posit that people are in practice (wittingly or not) communicating some sort of commitment-to-stay at a time where that's premature. concretely eg saying "I'll love you forever" when they're not engaged to be married

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@1a3orn we're used to computer systems being kind of (at least ideally) white box. and we now have ones that we kind of have to treat as black boxes. and this is unnerving. for PRACTICAL purposes. bricks are not black boxes for practical purposes. but corporations are!

@Malcolm_Ocean @the_wilderless that’s my problem with the whole thing! “i’ll love you forever” and “we should be partners for the rest of our lives” are two very different sentences being treated as one

@sonikudzu @the_wilderless but insofar as love means romantic love, and insofar as the person might later become monogamous with someone else... "I'll love you forever" DOES imply "I intend to be your partner for the rest of our lives" that's the issue here. your original tweet doesn't say "forever"

@sonikudzu @the_wilderless and like yes, it will eternally be the case that the particular shapes that are having a particular interaction do fit together in the way that they do, and sometimes one is simply observing that fact. but I see "eternity" as more timeless, and "forever" as more timeful

@Malcolm_Ocean @visakanv I don't think the human brain can grab these scales one way or another. The "days" comparison helps to understand precisely that, that it is something immense, way over our minuscule lifespan and capacities. That we're not talking about a moderate or even large increase in

@CrazyAndWildArt @visakanv I think people DO kinda grasp kilobytes and megabytes and gigabytes. like even a fairly non-techy friend of mine had the appropriate jaw-drop😮 when I told her I'd downloaded a 300MB csv file (containing every single thing kaiser can possibly bill you for plus metadata)

0 likes 0 RTs

@CrazyAndWildArt @visakanv again, I'm not saying that the time stuff doesn't also help—it does. it's just misleading in another way, like measuring something on a log scale that isn't log-distributed would also be misleading or saying "billionaire X added $Y to their net worth"

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Probably an unconscious instance of "bad on purpose to make you click" but Bloomberg knows better than to use the word "added" in a headline about net worth increasing $14M due to share price increase. No addition occurred! That's misleading, practically a lie. #MetaphorsMatter

yeah, seems like your options are roughly: 1. sell/work only in contexts where your past doesn't come up 2. begin again with a new identity that's entirely unlinked from your previous one (which would require maintaining enough vibe diff and social graph diff for people to not notice. pretty hard if you want to make a whole vibe) 3. find a way to talk about your story in the context of the stories about you that other people are telling, that allows at least some people to see ways in which they can trust you, even if there are other ways they can't (which would involve some amount of bridging those perspectives, which I know is emotionally difficult given the amount of hatred laced in some of them, in addition to being conceptually difficult).

0 likes 0 RTs

for #3, like... my sense is that aside from a few crusaders, most people really don't care that much, and if they read something from you that was sufficiently self-aware and not trying to make a bid for them to take your side about the whole thing but just to be open to friendly interaction or economic transaction, then they'd be like "okay, idk what happened here but it's not really any of my business. I might not invite this guy to my party but I'll hire him to build my game"

watching this CGP Grey video about memetic hygiene and his description of going on social media being exposing yourself to everybody's sneezes has me wanting to make a social media app where the posts are just called Sneezes youtube.com/watch?v=rE3j_R…

huh, memes becoming so aggressive at spreading that they alienate people... is kind of like cancer getting cancer

nah it's more subtle than that. if you anticipate your problem being solved, you move towards solving it (psycho-cybernetics). having a context that draws you into such an anticipation and helps you participate in it and clarify what you want, is a real resource

@Malcolm_Ocean more like they trigger a well-evolved immune response

@ConvergeToTruth right, but the thing I'm pointing at is that the actual CONTENT of the meme gets undermined by the fact that it evolves into a form that spreads so fast it triggers this response like spreading faster seems good for the meme... until it isn't

i really used to believe there was a good reason for everything until my daughter died. i've been struggling for months trying to make sense of it but i really can't. unironically changed my world view. shit just happens. maybe that's all there really is

sucks 💔 "there's a reason for everything" is confused afaict. what's actually true: 1. there are causes to everything, and more intelligence at work than you might assume 2. everything that happens, leads to everything else that happens after, including things you may cherish immensely before I elaborate on #2, I want to note: the loss of your daughter is utterly tragic and what I'm about to say doesn't imply that it was "good" in some "overall" sense for her to have died, or anything like that. that's not so much wrong as incoherent. there is no ledger like that. it doesn't all add up—there's no way to turn it into numbers. so. you lost your daughter. and your life is going to be very different as a result of that. this is much larger than a little butterfly. and much will be worse. you'll miss her, and you'll ache. and... someday something absolutely unequivocally lovely will happen—a new child, a new friend, a creative work, or some other possibility. and you will know that you wouldn't be having that experience in the world where you still had your daughter. that doesn't make it "worth it"—again, there's no comparison. it's moot. but... there, in that moment of you experiencing the preciousness of what is happening... beauty keeps going, and it builds upon every tragedy. it folds in everything that has happened. and this can be narrativized as "everything happens for a reason", but... that misses something about it all. anyway, I hope that helps! I have more writing/thoughts broadly related to this, but in this context it doesn't feel appropriate to link it unless you specifically ask.

reflecting on how all my life it seemed like there was such a tremendous emphasis on the value of being cerebrally clever, and yet how all of the really wicked problems I’ve had + I’ve known people around me to have had, have come from incompetence with emotions, below the neck

"reflecting on how all my life it seemed like there was such a tremendous emphasis on the value of being emotionally aware, and yet how all of the really wicked problems I’ve had + I’ve known people around me to have had, have come from incompetence with thinking things through" ...is there someone for whom this is true? if you solve your bottleneck, you get a new bottleneck somewhere else. maybe this is a you (and your scene) thing. (I don't particularly think so but it's interesting to think about!)

I got chewed out in high school for calling something a 'quote' instead of a 'quotation', and reflected that yeah, that makes sense in comparison to eg 'calculation'... but now in 2025 somehow the word 'compute' is going through the same shift?? interesting linguistic phenom

much writing spends a lot of time critiquing competing theories (examples in next tweet). this is helpful, but I'd love to see many of them rewritten the way they would be written as a kids curriculum in a world where they're obvious to everyone!

@Malcolm_Ocean usually i try to see if the author has any book or blog aimed at the general public academic works really love their citations, references and minute differences, that it makes the writing style insufferable

@AbstractFairy lots of general public books still have this property of being reactionary in this sense. there's just a general feeling of wanting to define something by highlighting the (common!) errors it doesn't make, rather than by presenting it on its own terms

swatted some houseflies and after a few minutes another fly started poking at their corpses, and at first I imagined it being like "oh my brethren are dead" but then I remembered it was a fly and that it was just as likely thinking "hmm, good spot to lay my eggs?"
