@jon_stokes Tough choice. Block makes it more difficult for them to appear in your TL. Mute makes trolls waste energy. In warfare, having enemies waste resources is a positive. Muting upends trolls' playbook and uses their own tactics against them: x.com/jgarzik/status…

quoting @jgarzik: @davidzmorris What's the alternative? The goal of a troll is to cause you to waste your most valuable resource - time. The prime goal is not communication or persuasion or education, but to distract, anger, create chaos and doubt. They win when you respond, or even listen and

@jgarzik @jonst0kes yeah ideal might be if you were able to hell-ban people within the context of your own tweets they could still try to reply and start shit but as long as you were the top-level tweet nobody else would even see their stuff that could have other issues tho

I want to have Complice be able to be embedded in iframes so people can use it in personal dashboards or like @AbhayPrasanna in their @RoamResearch sidebar... ...with minimal clickjacking risk. How does that work? Most anti-clickjacking advice sites say "just block iframes" 😕🤷‍♀️

3 likes 0 RTs

From what I've read, the main way clickjacking works is by having the user click some UI element that causes some significant effect with only one click (eg Amazon's one-click ordering) Complice mostly doesn't have that—few big effects, and these have "confirm" dialogs etc.

0 likes 0 RTs

But *why* is it limited to one-click effects? Is it just because otherwise the user tends to realize that their clicks aren't having the effect that they think they are, and bail? Or is there some more technical reason I can feel reassured by?

When Sarah & I walk, I sometimes end up ~1' ahead. We were reading some shadow shit into this til we realized that I just have a faster default pace, & my system would only slow down once the error of me being ahead reached about 1'; she had a similar threshold for speeding up.

7 likes 0 RTs

Hence me being one foot ahead was a stable point, what PCT calls a "virtual reference level" formed by two control systems in a tug of war. Neither *wants* the current situation, but neither has unilateral access to a move that would improve things in terms of what they do want.

5 likes 0 RTs

So yes, the fact that part of you wants some shit that is socially unacceptable and/or bizarre from the perspective of your conscious desires, doesn't mean that want is any more true or real than what the other parts of you want.

6 likes 0 RTs

Your shadow stuff may be "deeper" in the sense of "more buried" but that doesn't make it "more profound" or whatever. All your egosyntonic desires also matter!

Thread · Why subconscious drives outmaneuver conscious intentions

Your subconscious drives are reorganizing your mind to try new strategies til one works, and since they aren't conscious, they aren't constrained by: • what you think is okay • your own… belief… that you're not allowed to fuck around and find out?!? 🤯

71 likes 7 RTs

Holy shit that actually explains why your subconscious seems (/is?) smarter than you! This came from @jondubin pointing at the question of why a given part wins an internal conflict. Not sure I'd seriously thought about it like that before.

18 likes 0 RTs

From a PCT lens, when there's a direct internal conflict, nobody wins, it's just a tug of war that either stabilizes at some compromise (with both sides still tugging full-force!) or oscillates if perturbed from that compromise.

12 likes 0 RTs

But what if the internal conflict is indirect? Brain is a learning system and in general tries to reorganize itself in order to achieve the various aims it's pursuing at various levels. And I've long been aware eg school traumatizes ppl away from that natural learning process…

12 likes 0 RTs

…but I'm realizing that there might be a sense in which the learning process itself goes underground a bit, and renders shadow parts more capable of outwitting you than you are at outwitting them! Hence the experience of these persistent weird desires that can't be tamed.

12 likes 0 RTs

The brain's learning/reorganization system is kind of endlessly creative as long as it's able to run. But when we're doing things consciously we often think we know how they should work and we don't let the reorganization happen naturally. Or if the first try fails, we give up.

15 likes 1 RT

By contrast, if our unconscious drives are, by their nature, not under conscious control and thus also can't be criticized into giving up (to avoid fear of failure)… …they'll just keep trying stuff, and sooner or later come up with a new way to thwart most counteractive moves!

11 likes 0 RTs

The takeaway here is that just because your shadow parts manage to win a bunch of your internal conflicts, doesn't mean that those desires are more true for you. Conflict is a whole phenomenon itself!

No, I spoke too soon. The *real* takeaway here is that you can't beat your shadow in a fight.

Thread · Why text-based tools can't produce real common knowledge

[[Common knowledge is almost impossible to do without synchronous communication or a hell of a lot of redundancy]] 💬 open ended design rant ❤️‍🔥🧵

14 likes 2 RTs

To be really clear: common knowledge is not just "everyone in the group knows X" or "everyone in the group knows everyone in the group knows X". It's: 1. everyone in the group knows X 2. everyone in the group knows 1 3. everyone in the group knows 2 4. <repeated ad infinitum>

4 likes 0 RTs

The recursive infiniteness of this sounds exhausting but in practice once you actually hit *infinity* it suddenly becomes simple again. If you're in a scene where there's some secret and you're trying to track who knows it & how to speak, and someone blurts it out, it collapses.

5 likes 0 RTs

Say you're with friends, & you know some of you are going to a party, but you don't know if Bob is invited so you don't the mention the party in case Bob feels left out. Then Chad says "can't wait to dance with you all tonight!" and Bob goes "yeah!" Instant relief & clarity.

4 likes 0 RTs

But suppose Bob goes "uhh... what?" Common knowledge breakdowns, when people act on a basis of thinking everyone's on some same page, and they're not, tend to produce distrust/betrayal, whether social shame like the party, or literal death if trying to coordinate battle tactics

2 likes 0 RTs

Group chats are the closest tool we have for common knowledge in text-based mediums, but they have a lot of gaps. They solve the secret problem (above) because once something is in the group chat, you know it's not a *secret*. But they don't let you *ensure* common knowledge!

4 likes 0 RTs

If I post X to a 3-person DM and later I see the other two people both have reacted or replied, have we achieved common knowledge of X? Not remotely!

2 likes 0 RTs

For one, they don't know that I've seen their responses. But even before that: whoever responded second doesn't know if whoever responded first saw *their* response.

1 like 0 RTs

In practice, this somewhat resolves iteratively: as we keep chatting we assume we've all seen the previous messages, but stuff DOES get missed, especially as the group gets larger. It's no match at all for the obviousness of seeing everyone in the room react to X at once.

2 likes 0 RTs

"So!" I declare triumphantly, "let's make a Common Knowledge module for Roam or Slack or whatever, where once the whole group reacts to some content, they all get a notification saying they've all reacted to that content!" Problem solved?

1 like 0 RTs

Better, probably, but not quite. You see, how do I *know* that everyone has received & read that notification? I don't. So we'll just make a button to acknowledge the notification, and once everyone has done that, we'll... send another notification? ...shit. 😅

1 like 0 RTs

I want to be clear that this is not a strawman critique of a proposed solution—this is what my brain generated while attempting to solve it, and it's still as close as I have to an answer that doesn't involve having everyone's attention in the same place at the same time.

1 like 0 RTs

If an organization has enough consistent shared habits (via discipline or otherwise), I suppose this can be a good approximation too. If everyone knows that everyone knows (×∞) that everyone gets & reads the same morning briefing, then you can treat that as common knowledge.

2 likes 0 RTs

I suspect that in the days before decentralized/personalized media, it was effectively common knowledge among certain groups that everyone would have read the same newspaper that morning. Now that only happens for the biggest items, and barely/fuzzily

maple cocaine @maplecocaine ·

Each day on twitter there is one main character. The goal is to never be it

1 like 0 RTs

Some remote teams may be able to have such a practice, but don't underestimate how long it takes to build the trust that everyone consistently reads the briefing, and how quickly that trust is destroyed (if one person skips, even secretly, *they* know the system is untrustworthy)

0 likes 0 RTs

I think in practice the solution is to make good use of live meetings for this purpose: Have attendees bring in things they want to get common knowledge on, & then just speaking those things creates comknol (assuming everyone can tell everyone at the meeting is paying attention)

Thread · Perceptual control hierarchies vs reinforcement learning in game agents

Replying to @IAPCT @iapct ·

People generalise easily across games; RL takes millions of trials. Perceptual control theory agent gets to top on Breakout & Pong with no training. Preprint: arxiv.org/abs/2108.01895 @akbarth3great @sklausdev @sqlmelody @kerberos007 @asifrazzaq1988 @bantamcitygames @bananadata

@iapct @akbarth3great @SKlausDev @SQLMelody @kerberos007 @asifrazzaq1988 @BantamCityGames @BananaData Just read it! Cool stuff. The fact that the control hierarchy was designed for this task makes me feel the comparison to RL is weak. Good for saying "PCTagent is closer to what humans are doing" but still kinda far unless "explain instructions to human player" = premade model

0 likes 0 RTs

@iapct @akbarth3great @SKlausDev @SQLMelody @kerberos007 @asifrazzaq1988 @BantamCityGames @BananaData Still, very exciting. Next step maybe a more general-purpose control hierarchy learning by playing, and developing its *own* model via reorganization, resulting in new onta.

ontum = a unit of ontology Using a PCT lens, each of my perceptual control systems is responsible for perceiving & regulating exactly one ontum, and the set of all such onta in my system *is* my ontology.

Thread · Loch Kelly's effortless mindfulness and the attention/awareness split

Yoooo @m_ashcroft, Loch Kelly's book "The Way of Effortless Mindfulness" is an AT handbook disguised as dharma. It features many little "glimpse" exercises for accessing an expanded nondual awareness state. Here's the first one:

25 likes 2 RTs

I think Loch Kelly's book will also be of interest to @SarahAMcManus, @QiaochuYuan, and other folks who've been inspired by @Meaningness and/or @_awbery_ to look into Dzogchen since his approach seems to be to Dzogchen & Mahamudra what Jon Kabat-Zinn was to Zen & vipassana

6 likes 0 RTs

And of course, anything talking about attention as distinct from awareness is going to end up being profoundly relevant to the brain hemispheres!

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

1/ Reading Spectrum of Ecstasy (thanks @QiaochuYuan & @Meaningness!) ...and the parallels between it and Iain McGilchrist's @divided_brain model are... like 100%? If it weren't for the fact that IM doesn't use the term "non-dual", these pages could literally from IM's book.

2 likes 0 RTs

McGilchrist's work gives an *intellectual* vantage point from which statements like "awareness is already enlightened" can seem obvious. This is WILD. (excerpt screenshot from Loch Kelly's book)

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@meditationstuff @Timber_22 @noididntreadit Quote from Dzogchen book Roaring Silence that I like: > "Intellect itself needs to taste the manner in which it functions as a method of obscuring the nature of Mind." It captures a piece of the value I got from learning McGilchrist's hemisphere model: showed LH what it is.

9 likes 0 RTs

However, there's still something weird that needs bridging between the broad notion of two hemispheres with radically different modes of perception (attention vs awareness) and thus radically different basic experiences of the world and self and self-in-world.

1 like 0 RTs

I and others have hand-waved around this by talking about the right vs left hemisphere being "in charge" or whatever, but whatever the hell that is doesn't show up as obvious lateralization on an fMRI! A study found big effects in the Default Mode Network (DMN) and TPN though!

4 likes 0 RTs

So there's clearly some sort of mapping between {the left & right brain hemispheres} and {problem-solver mind & nondual awareness}. I don't know how to relate that to the DNM & TPN study. A hint: the hemispheres themselves are very intertwingled: not-two.

David Chapman @Meaningness ·

@micahtredding @meditationstuff @nosilverv @Morphenius @JakeOrthwein Specifically, in Dzogchen, the main things asserted to be non-dual are: duality and non-duality. That probably sounds like nonsense on first reading. It *can* be understood intellectually. Doing so may be useful. It’s easier to approach through meditation experience, however.

1 like 0 RTs

(I looked up the study to see if I could find relevant images but the only scan image I found was captioned in such a way that I didn't have a particular sense of relevance to our point here. here's a link to it though) frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…

Thread · Civium: superlinear city scaling and the single global virtual city · 15 of 16 tweets

Cities are attractors because of superlinear real-productivity scaling. Now that we can do collaboration with anyone in the world, we can have a single global virtual city. Then way less need to pack tightly! = summary of @jgreenhall's Civium concept 🧵👇 youtube.com/watch?v=yXBAtd…

30 likes 10 RTs

The premise is based on Geoffrey West's book Scale, about scaling laws & network effects. Dissipative systems (as in QT below) often have sublinear scaling effects: animal twice as big has +85% metabolic rate, ie it's slower.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

What's that term for an open system that maintains homeostasis/negentropy internally? eg a cell eg an animal eg a city it's on the tip of my tongue

10 likes 1 RT

Corporations also scale sublinearly, in terms of productivity & revenue per capita. It asymptotes as you add more people. However! In cities, there's just a superlinear scaling function—more people means not just more income total but more income *per capita*.

11 likes 0 RTs

This explains why cities keep growing. "In some very strong sense, cities are to people as stars are to atoms. If you increase the population, you increase wealth & population." But outward pressure of physical limitations on how close you can pack'em (& still feed 'em etc)

6 likes 0 RTs

These two pressures generate huge creative pressure to use the city's wealth & innovation to solve these problems, whether by building aquaducts, elevators, or hyperloops. Then you can add more people—until you have more problems that require more solutions!

6 likes 0 RTs

That's the first half of the vid—Jordan summarizing this bit from Geoffrey West's book Scale (which I recently bought because I'm trying to do things on a bunch of fractal scales at once. The index already has me drooling!)

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

My aim is full fractal buy-in, without compromise.

6 likes 0 RTs

JH then goes a few step further. His first extension is that effectively the entire population of a region is composed of a city and its support infrastructure. But there's a logistic fragility to that, since everything is operating at critical limits.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Taylor uses a discrete grid-based sandpile model developed by Per Bak etc in the 80s. You can also model this dynamic with straight up physics: any given grain has a maximum slope, above which it collapses. Gradual addition of sand moves to critical, then avalanche corrects.

6 likes 0 RTs

The key insight here though is that the reason the city is so productive is not about packing bodies tightly together, but minds, in relationship 🤯 "It's because minds are embodied, that we have cities." Relationships are subject to the limits of travel & telecommunications.

7 likes 0 RTs

But now we're at/near the tipping-point, with zoom, VR, etc (@visakanv & I would add twitter!) where the geographic limits to collaboration & innovation fall away. Thus! the Civium concept says: we can have a single virtual city, where everyone can communicate with everyone.

13 likes 0 RTs

The superlinear scaling laws then imply that the shift from our current largest cities to a 7,885,232,461-person city produces a 3-5× increase in wealth. (I think this referring to real wealth, not just money)

7 likes 0 RTs

*Meanwhile*, if we can do a lot of our creative collaboration virtually, with people all around the 🌎, then we no longer still need to cram all the bodies in one place. There can be lots more smaller, more walkable communities, where people know each other and can be in nature.

10 likes 0 RTs

"And, I suspect that this is not just *awesome*... I suspect it's actually going to be obligate, to enable the virtual to be as powerful as it's going to be!" "Most people are now [mid-2020] experiencing that interactions via zoom conference are more draining than in-person"

9 likes 0 RTs

"Now imagine if, when you finish that zoom conference, instead of dropping into your body in the context you're in now, you dropped into a context that's extremely nurturing to human beings."

11 likes 0 RTs

Anyway, fwiw, I'm in the early stages of plotting such a context on Vancouver Island. Get in touch if you are someone (or know someone) who might want to be involved on whatever level.

I've described before that "if people weren't afraid of hell, they'd murder and steal and stuff" is basically Christian propaganda

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@patrissimo @OperationMoksha @QiaochuYuan I have some sense that this concern is structurally similar to the classic Christian propaganda "if people weren't afraid of hell, they'd murder and steal and stuff" 😱 ...turns out that there are lots of atheists who are totally prosocial, because they care about other ppl 🤷‍♀️💞

4 likes 0 RTs

but... huh, what if in some sense that *was* largely what was happening between the dawn of civilization ~10k BC and Christianity's advent of a sense that this was "evil" and we shouldn't do it? (there's also ofc the Q of what tamed non-christian cultures similarly)

2 likes 0 RTs

While watching the vid w/ @LordChisholm, I brought up this spiral dynamics graphic and pointed at how "good-vs-bad" ~= RED & "good-vs-evil" ~= BLUE. I put out: "did we need to go through BLUE to get to ORANGE?" He said "ORANGE critiques BLUE's objective truth, which RED lacks."

5 likes 0 RTs

I'm getting a way better sense of how each of these value memes critique the one before them. @HFreinacht has a hilariously spicy take on how that works for BLUE→ORANGE→GREEN→YELLOW so I guess this mostly fleshed out the RED→BLUE bit metamoderna.org/from-premodern…

5 likes 0 RTs

anyway, the RED value meme is uhhh kind of sociopathic! the hierarchies and surpluses of agricultural societies enabled this kind of approach to succeed, and the winners wrote not just the histories but also the norms or so the just-so story goes 🤷‍♀️

1 like 0 RTs

perhaps the dominators were initially psychopaths, ie ppl who genetically lack empathy, but then over time as it got normalized, others started doing it perhaps it was needed to justify or dissociate from the horror of some ppl starving while others ate

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@MSlavin But clearly there's a sense in which hunter-gatherer societies were less crazy-making than ag/GameA ones. I have a few theories as to why, the most interesting of which is that in agri society you have to let your kids starve to have seedcorn for next year → dehumanization.

in any case, with Judaism & Xianity came guilt-based morality that condemned the harms of egocentrically just following one's impulses but by using guilt, it failed to adequately create a frame that acknowledges that we ALSO *want* to find win-wins; we care about each other

2 likes 0 RTs

but unless we're plagued with guilt or some other sort of externalized should, we basically *don't* want to give up satisfying our own desires & impulses and we shouldn't want to give that up! that's the font of value! so the puzzle is: can we have both?

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@StupendousGrav1 @wholebodyprayer Some teachers appear to cultivate trust easily by focusing on the dimensions of resonance & insisting points of dissonance are less real. Can be really tough because the experiences of trust DO feel more real, but distrust needs to be proactively honored.

@idontwa86202030 @visakanv there's no one answer to that, because "no school" has many possible versions in different directions. what would people be doing instead? would everybody be doing roughly the same "no school", or...?

I wonder when I will stop being upset by the memory of this injustice. Over the years I’ve gotten more zen about it, learned to see the humor in it. But at the core of it is a story about a system that does (some?) kids wrong, and I think some angry tears will always be warranted

@visakanv part of the injustice is that school insists it's for your benefit even when it isn't

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@mbateman @Aella_Girl As someone else asked above: where has this case been made in the most compelling way? So far I've mainly seen a lot of anecdotes from people who are strong outliers.

@RichardMCNgo @mbateman @Aella_Girl This is I guess still kind of anecdotal, but it names a dozen specific things most people learn in school, which I think most of us would agree are terrible lessons that shouldn't be the basis of a society.

Maria Made in Cosmos is taking a break✨ @made_in_cosmos ·

Thing learned at school that I’m still unlearning: 1. You only have one chance to do anything, and if you fail you’re either stupid or lazy 2. Asking questions gets you in trouble 3. There’s only one correct way to do things, and it’s up to authority to decide which way it is

1 like 0 RTs

@RichardMCNgo @mbateman @Aella_Girl Also school has fake competition. With eg soccer, you need to compete in order to assess skill. With eg math, pitting students against each other is absurd. Opt-in math competitions can be fun—I did them—but bell-curved zero-sum grading is clearly about status, not learning.

ofc, overcorrection can go off the rails if the new overcorrection is WORSE than the old one and undercorrection can eventually converge, but in the process, it has to "overcorrect" on a different level of abstraction, by passing the target altogether!

quoting @jackinwarsaw: @visakanv Did it feel gradual, or more like all-at-once realisation 'oh, i have a following now'? Or does it not feel like that still?

@visakanv as another datapoint, I've grown slowly from 2k-5k (almost 2 years) and I've not noticed any increase in abrasive people (or in total # of replies, kinda lol 😅) so I think it probably was partially the sudden growth that did it, more than the number

Thread on what I got out of Hades (video game) Has a few game element spoilers but doesn't actually talk about the story plot much so probably fine for most people 😊

13 likes 0 RTs

I got into it via @visakanv. This tweet sold me on it 👇 Built-in encouragement! The game really does live up to that. Hell/Hades tries to sell you on "there is no escape" but the larger frame of the game makes you not buy it and inspired to try again 😤

Visakan Veerasamy @visakanv ·

@diviacaroline @ehn Hades does this very explicitly, so much do that I would encourage someone who’s in a rut to play it bc it incepts you with “it’s ok to fail, you’ll do better the next time”

7 likes 0 RTs

There was something really satisfying about beholding the rich archetypes of the various Greek gods that support you. They all have strong, distinct, multi-faceted personalities, and encourage you in different ways. The underlying message is always:

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

I love you. You've got this. It's worth it.

7 likes 0 RTs

You also get to see pairwise relationships between the Olympian gods, both re personalities & in terms of the different ways they make you more powerful or change their attack style. The combinatorics are a lot, and make every run different, even as you gain overall familiarity.

9 likes 0 RTs

Some chambers are "Trial of the Gods", where you have to pick one of two gods to accept a boon from first, & then the other tries to smite you. But after a short battle with the usual underground dudes while dodging lightning bolts or whatever, they forgive you!

4 likes 0 RTs

This forgiveness and fighting-not-meaning-relationship-threat theme goes a lot deeper and permeates a lot of the game. We all have to bear our choices, and if you're immortal, eventually you get bored of holding grudges! Which doesn't mean you get bored of *fighting*!

5 likes 0 RTs

Fighting—the contest of wills, wits, & wiles—is a pretty fundamental aspect of being. Now, if you're mortal, you don't want to fight to the death unless something even more important is on the line, but that's why we have sports and games and uhh status competitions 😅

3 likes 0 RTs

But I can kinda see how if I were immortal, it could be cool to be lovers with someone who I also fight to the death periodically! For us mortals, there's wrestling your partner, or something like this:

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

me & @SarahAMcManus demo a technique we just came up with for healthily expressing frustration towards someone. basically you arrange your arms so they can frustrate you physically, and then you PUSH AS HARD AS YOU CAN 😡💪❤️‍🔥 (& use mechanics/leverage to balance strength diffs)

4 likes 0 RTs

It's been cool to have contact with a metaphor of death being a temporary setback. It helped me feel in touch with other reincarnation myths, and some recognition of how emotional flashbacks are a bit like dying and resetting to an earlier save point.

to be clear, I'm not saying reify the distrust. it's simply the absence of trust. ask it what it would needs in order to trust. see if you can get it some version of that in a way that works for the rest of you. see if, in fact, that resolves the distrust—it may not!

One take: it was an extended visual art piece dressed up as a movie. People forget years later that it was 3D in theatres, and it was GORGEOUS and that was most of the point and what made it so amazing. People told people "you've gotta see this" and so everybody went.

some people talk about books as conversations with the authors having a book just on your device is like having a friend you only chat with, who never comes over and spontaneously bumps into your other housemates sure, you can make an introduction, but that's different

13 likes 1 RT

in addition to the simple value of someone who walks in the room being able to see who you're talking with from looking at the cover of the book you're reading they might also decide to strike up a conversation with them as well if you leave the book on the table

9 likes 0 RTs

visitors to the house would often find themselves at the end of a 3h conversation with a pile of books sitting in front of them, for potential further exploration—or not; but it's a feeling of being introduced the physical books were atomic units in such a context, like QTs

none of these work in physical embodied space unless you have actual books, or maybe photocopies or similar distinct handleable objects we can do versions of this virtually—and we do! last night I tweeted about obviousness, and laid a breadcrumb to impro

there are of course advantages to virtual book-organizing, when it comes to precise references, remixing, tracing things back to sources, searching, and so on my defense of paper books is not an offense towards virtual books

but the virtual is not a replacement for the physical, if we're interacting in physical space! if you want to have a embodied & situated knowledge context, it needs paper books even if you end up reading epubs for better note-taking, the physical books still act as portals

quoting @LevineJonathan: Bari Weiss is now making $800,000 a year on substack 👀👀 https://t.co/VCW5o37XVT

@MasterTimBlais I've held a kind of generic not-wanting-to-get-mobbed sense, but when I look at actual likely trajectories, I'm not that concerned, since it would take a fair bit of sustained effort to convince each of my hundreds of customers to stop paying for a service they like
