suddenly struck by a realization that in almost all circumstances "the alternative" is a really really weird thing to say 🤨 (as in eg "better than") *THE* alternative? as if there's exactly one and everybody knows what it is? wat.

14 likes 0 RTs

Replying to Patrick Lam (@va2lam@mastodon.nz) @va2lam ·

@Malcolm_Ocean Getting old is better than the unique alternative.

@va2lam this one is better than literally every other one as far as I can tell insofar as "dying young" is reasonable general category and is for most people pretty bad no matter how it happens (even though there's a huge variety and some of those ways are more awful than others)

1 like 0 RTs

@va2lam having said that, "old" means at least 2 things: • existing longer, the alternative to which is ceasing to exist • senescence (biological aging process) which goes slower/faster depending on some factors, & can possibly be halted or reversed in our lifetimes

1 like 0 RTs

@va2lam in addition to simply "existing longer", in the context of humans "getting old" also implies a ton of things about gaining some kinds of wisdom and also usually shifts in values towards eg family trees, and also usually becoming less paradigmatically fluid.

@taoroalin and even there, those candidates might reify what they think their BATNA is as "the alternative", when actually there are other possibilities they haven't considered!

Quicksearches a lil better, mostly worse. Can right-click a search field to add easily, but no way to directly create a new one, even by keywordifying & %s-ifying a bookmark. Gotta *modify* some other search and that works, but that's super jank. +Worse preview=harder to trust.

EW. It handles ctrl+left & ctrl+right slightly differently than everywhere else (chrome, sublime, terminal, gedit, nautilus, unity) Wanted to add "now" to end of "It's fucking fast!" and ctrl+right took me *past* the "!" That's just....... wrong? That's just wrong. @Firefox wtf

0 likes 0 RTs

I literally might not use Firefox just for that. The whole fucking point of having & using ctrl+right, ctrl+backspace, etc, is that they function in an extremely consistent way so that you can do stuff without having to stop and ensure it's understood you.

@VVlifts I have a friend who used to be terrified of being such a person, which seems like a whole different layer. He wasn't able to relax into the idea that we were co-creating meaning with a convo, kept feeling like he had to perform at it and prove he was worthy of respect.

Thread · Why blindspot feedback is so hard to give and receive

And yet... blindspot feedback is hard. It usually creates tangles for one or both parties involved, and little net benefit. A thread of some of my realizations about this over the last year.

Sad Champ @atlaz_chugged ·

"Nobody knows what’s wrong with themselves. Everyone else can see it right away." —Stephanie

80 likes 7 RTs

Afaict, this is basically true: > "Nobody knows what's wrong with themselves. Everyone else can see it right away." Two addenda: 1. This applies to groups too. Every group has a blindspot. 2. By default, nothing A says about how B's wrong will be comprehensible to B.

46 likes 3 RTs

Let's start with this—the core of the blindspot feedback puzzle: > By default, nothing A says about how B is wrong will be comprehensible to B. Importantly, this is mostly true for communication patterns and other unconscious stuff. Can usefully give eg golf swing advice ofc.

30 likes 1 RT

Okay, so suppose you do something that systematically causes issues in your relationships. Unless you're a sociopath, you probably don't want to be aware you're causing these issues, and you probably *aren't* aware. Things just seem to happen to you. But someone else has a sense.

28 likes 1 RT

When they try to speak their sense, though, what they're saying will inevitably be attempting to point at something your worldview is set up to avoid looking at. This is not a comfortable situation for *either* person, generally.

38 likes 1 RT

It's uncomfortable to have someone point at your blindspot, because to the extent they're succeeding, they're generating errors for your subsystems whose job it is to keep you from looking there. Key: this is NOT something to be ashamed of. Doesn't mean you're bad or don't care.

42 likes 4 RTs

It's also uncomfortable to be sincerely trying to point at someone's blindspot, because the more you try to adopt their frame (necessary in order to communicate),the less sense the thing you're trying to say makes—because it's that frame's blindspot. So you end up dumbstruck.

53 likes 0 RTs

One assumption that keeps people stuck is the idea that if what you're doing is causing problems, you should stop it immediately. Not only is that not wise, it's usually not even possible. Practice this sort of response to feedback instead:

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Someone recently told me, "When you talk about X, you sound like you think you have all the answers." I replied, "I can sorta see what you're pointing at and why that undermines X. I don't know what in me is generating that… until I understand why, I'll probably keep doing it."

36 likes 4 RTs

Develop the ability to entertain someone's feedback without feeling a need to change. Without that, here's 2 ways people usually respond to blindspot feedback: 1. "omg sorry uhh I'll xyz" (which may half-work but not longterm) 2. "uh what are you talking about? you're confused"

30 likes 1 RT

Both responses result in "layering" (from @meditationstuff's meditationbook.page/#47) In the first case, the feedback recipient adds a compensatory layer trying to subvert their own behavior. In the second, the other person adds a occlusive layer to avoid seeing the problem.

27 likes 0 RTs

IN NEITHER CASE does anything get resolved. Can we do better? I think so. It involves the sort of thing I said above, of being able to acknowledge that you really don't know why what you're doing, and that you'll probably keep doing it until you understand why.

26 likes 0 RTs

This blog post of mine is a short case study of one personal work-in-progress. You can witness a pattern evolving over a period of trying to bring it into awareness without trying to change it. malcolmocean.com/2021/02/lectur…

18 likes 0 RTs

As a feedback-*giver*, my main suggestion would be to explicitly differentiate between your own experience and your own frame and someone else's, and to be clear (internally and overtly) that you're looking for some sort of correspondence, not a direct fit.

24 likes 0 RTs

I ended up with a bunch of layers due to people seeing some of my behavior patterns as selfish/greedy or assholish, and then me trying to find my selfish parts or my asshole parts. Well, turns out I don't have any parts that identify as "asshole", so this was a wild goose chase.

30 likes 1 RT

Instead of saying "you're doing/being xyz", say "you're doing 🤷‍♀️something🤷‍♀️ that in my internal language I'm inclined to call 'xyz'." It's impossible to refute, which in this case is not a psy-op but actually helpful for both people, because it *needs* no refutation!

33 likes 1 RT

Needs no refutation because I'm obviously doing *something*, and you're gonna call it as best you can. This sort of spacious frame encourages dialogue participants to feel like they're on the same team, mapping some hard-to-explicate 🤷‍♀️something🤷‍♀️ from the inside & the outside.

26 likes 1 RT

Importantly, only go in as far as feels safe. If someone comes up to you and says "you're doing something I'm inclined to call narcissism" but you sense they're trying to manipulate you, you don't have to try to have that conversation and try to sort it out! (No have-tos ever)

22 likes 0 RTs

Trusting your own sense of what conversations feel safe to have is paramount. It's your layering detector.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

if someone can't trust me in some way, even if I or others *do* trust me in this way then I cannot ask them to trust me more than they can trust me each person has been betrayed in different ways, and their trust must thus be earned in different ways

Around 28mins @Conaw talks about wanting to get push notifications when authors who've influenced him change their mind about stuff(!) eg replication crisis. Occurs to me that solving this problem would also help with this:

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

I've recently been thinking a lot about how much harder it must become to change your mind about something once you've published a book about it—particularly a popular one. Urge for consistency is strong enough *without* thousands of artifacts.📖 Related: twitter.com/Malcolm_Ocean/…

Liquid democracy seems to me to almost instantiate that push notification thing, in the sense that if I'm deferring to C and C defers to S, then C realizes S is a paid shill and shifts course, then my deferring to C automatically also updates. Hmmm...

The pandemic should end "free market" ideology forever. Service workers have more leverage than ever (essential workers, companies desperately need them, unemployment bonuses gave them hold-out power) and they still didn't get a raise. The free market only works for the rich.

@DanPriceSeattle What do you think solutions might be? Like who needs to do what? I've mostly been thinking solution needs to give people more freedom to not take bad deals (UBI?) so that people can't get any benefit from offering them.

Lots of seem to think raising happiness baselines doesn’t make sense because you’ll normalize and not feel any different. But emperically valence is absolute not relative Being chronically depressed feels worse than normal, and normal feels worse than being chronically happy

@nickcammarata I think this is because of the same classic-but-weird conflation of A:"things that should make me happy" and B:"happiness". People know that "things that should make me happy"++ temporarily causes "happiness"++ then normalizes, but they call A:"happiness" and B:"?????"

PMS is like the single biggest argument I have against the post-rationalist or feelings-oriented approach to life/therapy. Sometimes, it’s just biology and you need to think your way through something because intuitions and feeling-signals are clouded. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@reasonisfun Yeah, recognizing the effect of chemical baselines (which can also be done by paying attention to what seems true when on drugs, including alcohol & caffeine) implies a need for a huge level up in reasoning about implications. Still underlying coherence.

@reasonisfun But figuring out WHAT they mean, or how to trace that WHAT back to these different causes, is not a straightforward puzzle whatsoever. Interpersonally, I often say "if someone's upset with me, that's partially about me. but neither the size nor shape of the upset is about me."

2 likes 0 RTs

@reasonisfun I'm the source of the sense data. But the size of their upset is going to be determined by neurochemical baseline, among other things. And the shape of their upset is going to be determined by the specific betrayal at risk, which comes from their past.

@adolfos_tweets @SSS_music it's not easier but it reduces the chance of someone in not-PST remembering "noon" and showing up at the wrong time which literally happened to me at noon PST today since I only used local time last night since I didn't think the only non-PST person was coming to the meeting 😂

Replying to bitbutter @mormo_music ·

@Malcolm_Ocean requires both participants to know the time difference (otherwise it's ambiguous whose noon you're indicating). '1200 your time' doesn't have that problem.

@mormo_music yes, requires both participants to know the time difference; if one person is in a familiar-to-both timezone and the other is travelling between timezones then it can make more sense to use that @AskYatharth & I scheduled some calls in PST while I was in EST and he was UTC+1 😂

1 like 0 RTs

@mormo_music @AskYatharth I think it also usefully functions as a common-knowledge collapser; if you've changed timezones (via travel or DST) and I don't know that and I say noon=2 then you might be like "what?" whereas if I say "noon your time" that's unclear

As @EpistemicHope says, "favor" might need to be further disambiguated. My first attempt at that would be: F1: vibing with someone & enjoying their company vs F2: wanting them to benefit in particular, more than others trust or F1 could be reason for F2

This is a great thread, with some useful conceptual clarification relevant, I think, to the mega-conversation that happened this month. But also, something doesn't sit right with me about this distinction. I'm not sure what. ...maybe "favor" needs to be further decomposed?

@Malcolm_Ocean love this. in an age where quality and addictiveness are equated (a good show is what's bingable, a good game is what's endlessly playable), it's good to recall that perhaps once the former was holy whereas the latter aroused suspicion.

@ElodesNL yeah, it's like, it's like, I think there was still something cool about him tying himself to the mast to find out what the song is like, since it's clearly a phenomenon but like, in terms of what to actually *expect*, it's probably not satiation so much as pure hunger

Thread · What pinned Factorio achievements teach about designing goal apps

I spent dozens of hours in the last week getting a couple of achievements in Factorio (playtime shown below is overestimate; I left it running in the background some) and I'm struck by a sense of how it was motivating to be playing with the achievements pinned to the top left. 🤔

3 likes 0 RTs

Feels to me like there's some basic gamification stuff to take inspiration from here with respect to designing apps like complice.co—a goals app moreso even than a tasks app. How to pin your life goals to the top of the screen like that? Figuratively or literally!

0 likes 0 RTs

(Aside: the "pin" icon actually isn't a pin, it's a magnet, which could also be an interesting metaphor for being drawn in towards your goal—I'm probably reading a bit too much into it though 😛)

1 like 0 RTs

Part of what's particularly cool about these achievements pinned to the top left is that the user *chose* them. Unlike the more general victory conditions of a game, which are kind of predetermined, the user is saying "I want to win *like this*."

0 likes 0 RTs

Choosing which achievements to aim for is a very similar flip to what Complice guides people to do. Rather than taking for granted what success looks like, choosing for yourself.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

🤔Complice helps w/ adult psych dev 🤯 In terms of Kegan stages: 3→4 Choosing & focusing on personal goals helps ppl break from being reactive to society demands. 4→5 Fluid goal approach (vs rigid plans) helps ppl break from being subject to own goals. twitter.com/Malcolm_Ocean/…

1 like 0 RTs

Although huh, the chosen achievements still are chosen... from a menu. It would be neat (maybe this is already a thing?) to be able to define your own achievement in terms the game could understand, pin it, and work towards it!

1 like 0 RTs

Life is basically like that, in a fundamental sense. This is particularly true outside of the confines of the prison known as school, but even there—some people sent to literal prison decide to unlock "read 1000 books I'm interested in while in prison" and others don't.

1 like 0 RTs

It's mostly a mindset switch—one that I started with more of than most but over the years I've noticed how much further there is to go. And my developing the Complice app has a mutual feedback loop with my own learning. I make it and it teaches me.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

sure, I may be free from society's concept of what success looks like, but am I free from my *own* concept of what success looks like?

0 likes 0 RTs

So as usual, when I notice something like this pinning achievement thing and ask "how could an app do that for life?" Complice is already way better than most apps. One of the main views is the Next Action tab, which zooms in on the particular thing you're trying to work on.

0 likes 0 RTs

I also just recently shipped a feature that makes that same next action BIG even if you're on the Organize tab. (although some users don't like this and so today I'm going to add an option to disable it)

0 likes 0 RTs

There's also a new-ish feature called the "whole-day intention" which basically makes one of your intentions be your frame for the whole day, and tints the background color of the page to match. Could be a concrete project, or could be something like "take it slow".

0 likes 0 RTs

But that's small stuff. At the other end of the scale, Complice doesn't just have areas of life or categories or buckets for your tasks—everything you're doing is organized towards a list of Goals. Even if open-ended, there's still a towardsness energy.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Realization: the way I relate to my goals on complice.co is… kinda like ritual magic. Basically by naming & enumerating the main careabouts I'm moving towards, I create affordances for invoking them as sources of motivation & clarity. 🧙‍♂️✨ Thread on naming goals 🧵

1 like 0 RTs

I think maybe the place that could use improvement is the Top Priority feature, which actually used to be called "Milestones" (& still is in retrospect—completed priorities are listed as milestones towards a goal) It's on a similar scale to the video game achievements, I think.

0 likes 0 RTs

Currently active priorities mostly show up when you go to set your intentions, which makes sense in that once you've set your intentions, you want to focus on what you're going to work on today, not other things you may want to do this week.

0 likes 0 RTs

But what if you could pin a Top Priority to the top left of at least the Complice webapp… or maybe depending on what your next action was, it'd automatically pin the top priority associated with that goal? That'd help connect each moment-to-moment action with long-term goals.

1 like 0 RTs

Okay, a simple experiment. Uhhh turns out the layout I'm using for Complice does not whatsoever afford sticking stuff in the top left like you can in a game where you walk around on a map. Both in normal mode ↙️ and distraction-free mode ↘️, this doesn't work.

0 likes 0 RTs

So I need to figure out something else! But this is exciting. Anyway, time to sign off twitter and get to coding some of these API features. I've got an achievement to unlock!

part of the interesting puzzle with working with her style is that there's a deep holism to each figure since she does them with a kind of one-stroke style, so it's like each time I'm asking for adjustments I'm not just getting "edits" but summoning an entirely new whole creature

sometimes when i see a really good or clever tweet i want to genuinely reply “nice” or “good one” but then remember that’s what the like button is for. but like i wanna appreciate it more than that ya know

@nikitanomo I like basically every tweet I'm glad exists (which is maybe half of the tweets I come across, tho obviously not half of all tweets) so I definitely have to actually say more stuff to actually be like "no, this tweet in particular is noteworthily good"

If you’re stuck for party tunes, I banged together this mix in 2018 for the queers-getting-ready part of the night: soundcloud.app.goo.gl/FwN5QsC1GeGtUi… Caution, it’s an hour and ten of me gearing up, so prep yourself the sounds for the climbdown.

@coladaclan oh you've got a lil bit of 212 in there that is a hot song

The idea that by default when someone is banned all of their past posts should vanish is batshit insane. Twitter does this, so does @MightyNetworks according to a friend, who pointed out that it made it impossible to reconstruct *why* they were banned.

It's awful because it destroys the common resource of all of their past work—very clear in the case of Twitter and QT-castles. It's also awful because it's kind of memory-holing, pretending it never happened. 1984 shit.

> Anthropic’s mission is to figure out how to give [AI Researchers] [tools for grokking what their neural nets are doing], and to get the whole field of AI using safety tools because they have so many practical applications for making more sense of AI. Boom, great incentives.

Rather than trying to get people to think about AI Safety or AI Alignment because of ethical reasons, making tools that already align with the business case. Many details to get right for this to be deeply wise, but knowing the folks working on it they've likely thought of most.

@Triquetrea Often what's going on is a problem-solution bait-&-switch because people don't understand this 👇

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Accepting that something is a problem does not require accepting any proposed solutions. 99% of described problems are real and important, at least in some sense. 99% of proposed solutions are at best irrelevant and at worst actively would exacerbate things.

Thread · Not wanting to be overestimated, and the whiplash that follows

Apparently I have some pockets of insecurity I wasn't aware of! Reading a few comments like this about me has me going "uhh guys wait" I think there's a real thing there, that's like, not wanting people to overestimate me & then get whiplashily disillusioned, which has happened.

nibras ꩜ @heynibras ·

@ElodesNL @liekovarpio @m_ashcroft @pragueyerrr @tasshinfogleman @Malcolm_Ocean Have to second this. One of the most comfortable, grounded people (my read from call with him) I’ve experienced from the birdsite

11 likes 0 RTs

But it raises a fascinating Q about how to actually *do* the having-people-not-overestimate thing. They're ofc gonna have whatever expectations it makes sense to them to have based on their set of experiences (of life and of me). I don't *want* to give them shitty experiences.

5 likes 0 RTs

It's also important to note that as far as expectations & betrayal goes, I've mostly been a source of pain & whiplash to people I've been in really close intense relationships with, so people expecting me to be grounded on twitter and calls are in a sense well-calibrated.

But then there's the question of what sorts of extrapolations people are making from their various experiences, to other contexts. What are the implications of anything?

every experience you've ever had was real but almost none of them imply what you think they imply nor do they imply what other people claimed they imply

@Malcolm_Ocean Reminds me of the distrust many people have for their emotions, and how you can learn to trust your emotions as a powerful guide once you separate interpretation from the fundamental, basic, abstract need it points to. What is your story leading to this tweet?

@markmarijnissen I don't now remember, but it's central to a lot of what I've been thinking about recently and you may find my yearly review blog post of interest in that it discusses similar themes malcolmocean.com/2021/01/2020-f…
