Design notes for a conversation-optimized Twitter replacement

🧵🧵Meta-thread For over a year I've been thinking & modelling about "what would twitter be like if it were actually optimized for conversation?" Mostly I've been tagging my thoughts #TwitterReplacement but haven't been collecting them anywhere. (A lot is still in workflowy too)

Here were some early #TwitterReplacement/#ConversationalTwitter thoughts about being able to interact with tweet-tree-structure, nonlinearly, including replying. I realized I'd put money towards something that solved this, and said as much.

@GRITCULT For linear threads: @threadreaderapp. @kriskarzy For branchy conversations: Treeverse chrome.google.com/webstore/detai… I want an app that lets you send tweets in-thread while browsing tree-wise, and would contribute $200-500 towards someone making it. RT if also interested.

This thread is me thinking out loud about densely networked twitter threads, and the emotional experience of being *lost* on twitter being analogous to chaotic malls optimized for impulse buys.

Wrote in my notes: "what is next? that feels like one of the main questions." and recalled I'd tweeted basically the same thing last night. Went to twitter to see if it had interactions... twitter.com/Malcolm_Ocean/…

What does twitter need? One thing is something that right now they're in the process of rolling out, which is better support for Quote Tweets (QTs) No idea if this was influenced by me & @visakanv & @micahtredding & others tweeting loudly about it. 🧵👇

a reply is a way of saying "now that you've read THAT, read THIS" a QT is a way of saying "now that you've read THIS, read THAT" (From my current musings on the kinds of relationships tweets can have. Importantly, in both cases, the "that" tweet is the older one.)

QTs are such a powerful feature. They need: - their own notifications tab - visibility: so you can see when someone has QT'd the tweet you're viewing - better systems for composing QTs (more like "RT with comment" UI, where it previews link) - &+ Context.

Difference between upward-spiral twitter & downward-spiral twitter: - 📈 do you make a point of connecting things in context? - 📉 do you make a point of taking things out of context? Twitter is better than most apps at both. Up to you to decide what game you want to play.

Twitter is currently very divergent: you can't bring 2 tweets together by replying to both or by QTing both at once. That's a HUGE limitation to what kinds of thoughts we can represent here. Ends up as screenshots—cumbersome & loses context.

Twitter has a lot of room for improvement here too, to be clear. The convergence is still very sparse—only one QT at a time, no easy way to explicitly juxtapose 2+, to show parallel or paradox. Here's a hacky example of me doing it with screenshots twitter.com/Malcolm_Ocean/…

@garybasin asked me about how to get network effects on a twitter replacement, and I figured it'd be best to start with a plugin. Various folks (@metamitya, @nosilverv, &+) are working on this. Reply to this tweet with links to others!

@garybasin @Conaw Nah tha's the most important part of this thread 🙃 There's two parts of network effects. One way to bootstrap getting any traction at all is to interlink tightly with actual-Twitter at the start. The app would xpost to twitter Then there's how to grow huge. And I'd rather not!

We've got an emoji-picker and gif-search for tweeting. Why not also a tweet-to-quote-search? This would be especially valuable for mobile.

@visakanv @utotranslucence @verohecko Be the change you wanna see in the world, right?

Oh! And way more conversational notifications. Smoosh together all notifications from a given thread. Don't want ability to mark unread because then it's an inbox aka a todo list aka work aka 😒 But better overviews of what convos are happening, 🔥💯🤩

Ugh, got in all of 4 interesting conversations on twitter and my notifications are a complete mess. Notifs totally have not caught up to the world of threading. It's a tough design challenge to do a stellar job, but there are simple improvements from the current situation

Negative feedback loops. @robinsloan illustrates this beautifully with platforms.fyi—there's no inherent reason why something going viral needs to get huge fast. Could be a mix of automatic dampening plus a button to disable RTs on your tweet.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@QiaochuYuan Mmmm yeah. I like what @RobinSloan wrote about this, as an art installation in the form of a thread on a fictional social network: platforms.fyi Excerpts (but go read the whole thing, it's not long)

Some sort of retract/reconsider button. This is tough, but clearly something like this needs to exist. Somewhat concerned that outrage mobs would start demanding retraction, but that's not really worse than now, and prevents spreading outdated stuff. twitter.com/groundedSAGE/s…

What else does Twitter need? Last idea for tonight: maybe editable threads? (Though NOT editable tweets) This is also tough, for related reasons, but here's a case for it:

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Was thinking about this editable-threads-not-editable-tweets thing again today... And find myself thinking that if someone were building Twitter from scratch today, they might want to make Threads 🧵 be its own thing that's different from just a series of same-author replies. twitter.com/Malcolm_Ocean/…

Ok 1 more: two types of tweets... By default they aren't editable, but you could specify certain tweets that can be updated later, which would look different so it's clear. Synergizes with QTs: can update event details, a forecast, top answer to Q, etc.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

I guess I'll make a page on my roamblog for it, where I can start collecting drafty thoughts. That's another amazing thing about Roam compared to Twitter... (Maybe my ideal version of Twitter would somehow have BOTH editable and non-editable tweets 🤯) roamresearch.com/#/app/malcolmo…

Thread about censorship, free speech, and challenges of creating moderation that is symmetric wrt partisanship but assymetric wrt favoring generative discourse over destructive engagement.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Hmmm... seeing this has me thinking about the nature of censorship and whether there's a way to do it better. In this thread I'm going to think out loud to grok the meaning of censorship both conceptually and pragmatically. (Context: POTUS banned from twitter today) twitter.com/ConceptualJame…

Thread that talks about how quote-tweets are like asexual reproduction and *multi*-quote-tweets would be like sexual reproduction (in the sense of mating two memes together)

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Complete "family trees" aren't actually trees (unless asexual reproduction). Mating process makes it a DAG instead. I was already saying @RoamResearch was a gamechanger (over workflowy or file-folder hierarchies) like the advent of sexual reproduction—turns out it's isomorphic!

(oh wait actually no, single QTs are like horizontal gene transfer and multiQTs start getting sexy. or maybe that'd be multiReply, which is kind of a bonkers idea)
