@jonnym1ller The book Spectrum of Ecstasy pointed me at a vital connection between wealth & generosity: one who feels poor can never find anything to give no matter how much they have one who feels wealthy can always find something to give no matter how little they have

Thread · Claiming to be the godfather of #roamcult

Not many people know it, but... I think I'm the godfather of the #roamcult. Here's my case: @Conaw wouldn't have been active on twitter if I hadn't pitched him on how @visakanv was already using twitter kind of like roam with interlinked threads:

Conor @Conaw ·

@QiaochuYuan @uncatherio @Malcolm_Ocean @visakanv Malcolm also used @visakanv to drag me back to this glorious cesspool. My current feeling is that it is a new app, and max 10,000 people are using it.

42 likes 0 RTs

This was 2018-2019, before Roam had shipped publicly—Conor would just show me a demo every few months and I would stare at it and tell him that he was doing amazing work but that something was still missing.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@cwdaniels What I'm saying here is... for example, I've felt loved—personally, not abstractly—over the last few years, by @Conaw's work on @RoamResearch... well before I even started using it, just based on seeing the prototypes and his dedication to honing it into something amazing.

8 likes 0 RTs

I was thinking a lot about twitter threading at the time, inspired by @visakanv and @GRITCULT among others, and I told him there was something he needed to grok there. I could see the power in what he was trying to build and wanted that to happen.

Conor @Conaw ·

@KHPavle @Malcolm_Ocean Malcolm is amazing alpha tester. Happy to give feedback as well if you're open to it. Also recommend pinging @amyhoy

Anyway, so Conor got active on twitter and started stuff like this around that time - this thread includes multiple pointers to @visakanv.

But that's only half of my claim to being #roamcult's godfather. The other half involves @QiaochuYuan, who prompted the creation of both the @RoamResearch account and the #roamcult hashtag.

QC @QiaochuYuan ·

future historians will probably conclude that this (the first instance of the #roamcult hashtag) was my objectively most historically consequential tweet

quoting @QiaochuYuan: @visakanv @RoamResearch @sharifshameem hell yes visa's joining the #roamcult

7 likes 0 RTs

...and I not only introduced QC to Roam (afaik)...

QC @QiaochuYuan ·

@jondubin @Malcolm_Ocean and i have been brainstorming about synthesizing different modalities in Roam (@Conaw, Roam really meeds its own twitter) and it’s a wild ride man, talk to him if you’d like access

1 like 0 RTs

...but also to twitter! (he'd had an account before but hadn't been using it, and I explicitly encouraged him to get on there and get involved in threading as well as what would later become known as strangely earnest twitter)

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

I'm introducing @QiaochuYuan to twitter, and I'm like "find some meta-rationality people to follow in the list of who @utotranslucence is following", & also follow @visakanv & @GRITCULT to learn threading. "Seriously, this is important for understanding the power of the medium."

what marks a "goal" or "project" out as smooth and non-coercive for me is when I start writing it down and it feels instantly like I've already been doing this all along (ideally I don't write it down until I've already started it and checked there are no emotional blocks)

@captain_mrs yeah I resonate with this and I have some hazy thoughts like "it would be good if the Complice UI allowed you to backdate the creation of goals, and to fill in stuff you've already started noticing yourself doing towards that newly emerging goal before it crystallized"

I would like to complain about how we count time. It doesn’t make any sense that we switch between pm and am as we go from 11:59 to 12, and then the cycle of numbers restarts *an hour after* that, that is like counting 12 1 2 3 4... What kind of counting starts with 12?!

@AgnesCallard I switched to using 24h time but also to correct for the colloquial usage of "tuesday" where it's still tuesday 10 minutes after midnight (until you sleep or sun comes up, basically) I refer to 10 mins after midnight as 24:10. 1am is 25:00. I was up til like 27:45 last night.

Thread · Trying to find an option trade that pays off if the UK covid strain hits

In this thread, Malcolm tries to figure out whether there's an stock option he can trade to make money iff the UK strain fucks shit up hard. Was messaging a friend who knows a few things about finance, & I figured what the hell, might as well just tweet about it. #GarageDoorUp

15 likes 0 RTs

I would like to find a way to make $2-5k turn into: <$100 if the UK covid strain turns out to be a nothingburger >$20k if the UK covid strain causes a huge 4th wave in the USA and elsewhere 11:06 my understanding is that is broadly possible using put options, but I don't know how

2 likes 0 RTs

(my situation: - Canada - some money in WealthSimple but not on their trading platform, and don't otherwise have any investments (although for awhile I was set up on... Scotia iTRADE) - have some crypto, if that somehow helps )

1 like 0 RTs

One issue is that I'm not exactly sure what would move in the markets if the UK strain fucks shit up (4th wave, everyone sick). I'm interested in that question (reply to this tweet with ideas) but I don't want to get lost trying to figure that out at this phase.

1 like 0 RTs

Here's VIX, the volatility index, over the last 5 years. All-time high is initial covid shock, latest spike was just before election. Suppose I think that if UK strain fucks shit up, VIX will go above 40 sometime in the next 5 months. What do I do with that?

3 likes 0 RTs

One thing ofc I could do is just straight up buy VIX, I think. But that wouldn't 5× my money even if the spike is way larger. Somewhat higher-leveraged option would be to buy a call on VIX I guess? not sure exactly how that works, would love a lil example

1 like 0 RTs

even higher-leveragedly, in principle I could find another trader who thinks that VIX is not going cross 40 and is happy to sell me 50 [somethings] each worth $100 if VIX crosses 40 [by some date] and worth $0 otherwise, for like $10 apiece (though how do I find out how much?)

0 likes 0 RTs

okay now I'm on yahoo finance for VIX options and I'm seeing this: strike price is... relevant! I think I vaguely know what's going on here? But this graph is only for like, tomorrow, and I want something that spans like 4-6 months.

0 likes 0 RTs

Now got this chart which has a date of May. Before buying I'd obviously double-check that means what I am guessing it means (that I could exercise the option anytime until May). (idk where I picked up the jargon "exercise the option"—I've barely traded except a lil crypto)

1 like 0 RTs

Ok let's take the lowest blueish line on the left. Afaict, this is telling me that for about $5, I could be the proud new owner of the option to sell a VIX for $25. So my master plan is: 1. buy one for $5 2. then VIX hits $25 3. I buy VIX for $25, sell for $40, net $10 = 2×!

1 like 0 RTs

Okay that's pretty cool. Can we do better? I'm fine with higher risk. $4 for $30 call... that's... $6 profit on $4 I think, which is worse. $8 for $20 call... $12 profit on $8... same as previous $12 for $15 call... that's $13 profit on $12... slightly above 2×

1 like 0 RTs

Okay, so I could basically double my money here, assuming (A) UK covid strain or something else actually causes VIX to hit 40 (B) I've got the balls to actually exercise the options at the right time.

1 like 0 RTs

Ofc, if VIX hit 50, some of the above trades become much better (not sure which is new best—can whip up a quick spreadsheet; surely there are apps for this)

2 likes 0 RTs

Okay, this spreadsheet helps with situational awareness... one thing it highlights is that if I were thinking it would cross 55, then I'd make more money buying a higher strike option, presumably because the options themselves are just way cheaper at those prices?

1 like 0 RTs

In other words, those options are way cheaper because fewer people think it's going to hit that price. That makes sense. Riiiiiiight, and what this really affects is the *ratio*. I can get twice as many $35 calls as $24 calls for the same amount of money.

1 like 0 RTs

I'm not certain, but the overall shape of these options suggest to me there isn't a 10× or nothing trade to be made on VIX hitting 40. The $30 call though would be 1.5× at 40, 2.75× at 45, 4× at 50... and 9× at 70 (which was the previous all-time high)

1 like 0 RTs

The reason why I care about 10×ing rather than just 2×ing is that even doing this sort of investment is itself a large investment of time, I don't have that much money that I'm game to completely lose, but losing/gaining a few thousand dollars doesn't make a big difference to me.

2 likes 0 RTs

I am perhaps unusual in this regard but also I want to be clear that "losing/gaining a few thousand dollars doesn't make a big difference to me" is relative: it's on the scale of the difference it would make to me (and the world) for the UK covid strain to fuck shit up hard.

1 like 0 RTs

so it's like, both of these situations feel like ones I can be glad in: - "oh god shit has hit the fan really bad but also now I have an extra $20-50k" - "I lost $2-5k but the shit and fan are at ease and not entangled"

4 likes 0 RTs

You can see this as kind of a grand hedge, or something. I didn't do this last March despite confidence, because I still mostly felt like I could do something about the situation and didn't want to feel like I was rooting for disaster. bet I considered:

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@Jess_Riedel Simpler summary: If you're saying "the US [won't] do nothing as thousands die in real time" This article says "by the time 1k have died, 800k are infected" (at a low 1% death rate + 3 doublings in the average time it takes to die) Once 800k infected, not enough hospital beds.

Still lots of unknowns here, but I enjoyed this experience of thinking out loud. Oddly enough, this is an interesting experience of twitter actually *improving* my focus on something!

Anyway, for now I'm just going to let all of this investigation I just did simmer, both in my personal cerebellum and in the lovely distributed consciousness that is twitter. Share thoughts!

Twitter is the fucking coolest note-taking app. It’s like Evernote with a slot machine attached. Sometimes you get incredible feedback or a response that gives you 10x more value than you expected, and sometimes you get people discussing your genitalia! So exciting

Have been aware of @Focusmate for awhile as one of the main alternatives/competitors to complice.co/rooms coworking, but it didn't occur to me somehow until today that maybe I actually just want to *use* Focusmate for stuff I've been wanting accompaniment while working on.

4 likes 0 RTs

Checking it out now. Loving the onboarding—was sort of hoping I could just book a call without choosing what I was gonna work on, but nope. And that's probably good. Have tried such calls and I usually end up with something random. (& they have a quiet "skip for now" button)

0 likes 0 RTs

I think I'm just gonna go with Yearly Review, in which I'm bucketing both my blog post (half-written and showtime scheduled for tomorrow) as well as private reviews. First task: finish an adequate full draft of blog post (it currently has a bunch of placeholders & blanks)

0 likes 0 RTs

Watching the intro... I like how they have the timer at the top... was expecting them to actually have a separate 1-2min timer for the "tell your partner what you're working on". For me there's something that feels good about committing *then* hearing the bell.

0 likes 0 RTs

They also don't have a clear separate timer for the debrief, which I was expecting even despite the lack of that at the intro. (Could be fun to have a lil chatbot in the Complice rooms that asks "how'd last pomo go?" when break starts & "what's next?" 1min before pomo starts🤔)

1 like 0 RTs

Now I'm into "ready to book a session" and it's asking me for a session title and I'm like... do I put my goal there? Hmm... it's not showing me that goal anywhere. Ah yeah, title only visible to me. So I could use it for that, or not, or whatever.

0 likes 0 RTs

Oh nice, automatic buttons to make it repeat daily or weekly. Easy to get it to stick. This is a well-made product. I can tell lots of work went into making it as simple & functional as it is.

2 likes 0 RTs

Very curious how they do the match-up. I seemed to somehow immediately have a partner the moment I picked a time. I would have guessed some people have a kind of auto-availability, but I don't see that option anywhere! They said something about gcal integration though maybe?

0 likes 0 RTs

I guess maybe I got lucky that there was someone already waiting for that slot? Seems there are lots of people who have booked slots...

0 likes 0 RTs

(Oh. Thought I'd tweeted the above stuff last night.) Anyway, I just tried my first few sessions and can confirm that if you sign up for a slot that nobody else (in this case 9 minutes away) has then it puts you in a "Matching..." state.

0 likes 0 RTs

But literally 2 minutes later someone grabbed that slot. Impressive! Curious how they bootstrapped the initial volume of users to make that possible, although ofc pairwise matching means there's only ever at most one odd person out for a given slot.

I know from my experience with the Less Wrong Study Hall (a coworking room originally on tinychat, now at complice.co/room/lesswrong) that people thought it would take dozens of ppl signing on a few hours a week, but critical mass actually looked more like a few ppl 40+ h/week.

Thread · Decentralizing vaccine rollout by giving orgs autonomy over criteria

musing about simpler distributed-intelligence covid vaccination strategies... ...take say 100 orgs that can administer • give each 1000 doses • top priority: use all of them • give each org a general focus area • let them figure out relevant criteria themselves

3 likes 0 RTs

the general focus area at the moment would be things like: • long-term care homes • healthcare workers • frontline workers • people with comorbidities • elderly folk (the usual stuff people have been talking about)

2 likes 0 RTs

because each org has the autonomy to decide its own criteria, fewer people will fall through the cracks, because they won't all be the same and the small orgs can move quickly to fill in gaps. and no vaccines wasted because the orgs are supposed to use all of them

1 like 0 RTs

the current USA* laws around prioritization are slowing things way down because orgs are trying to prioritize *not vaccinating people they aren't supposed to* instead of *vaccinating whoever seems best* (*Canada seems maybe half as bad)

2 likes 0 RTs

these laws are based on a profound distrust and the impression that if not regulated people will do bad things. sure, some vaccines will go in the arms of friends and family, but that'll happen anyway and punishing people for getting caught does not help

Thread · Thinking out loud about censorship, deplatforming, and freedom of reach

Hmmm... seeing this has me thinking about the nature of censorship and whether there's a way to do it better. In this thread I'm going to think out loud to grok the meaning of censorship both conceptually and pragmatically. (Context: POTUS banned from twitter today)

James Lindsay, anti-Communist @ConceptualJames ·

One way out remains. Judges have already ruled that government officials can't be censored, but they did it anyway. That might get this in court and force the end of tech censorship.

1 like 0 RTs

Conceptually: I forget where I got the phrase but someone pointed out to me there's a difference between "freedom of speech" (a vital right) & "freedom of reach". You have the right to speak your mind in the forums you are in, but you don't have the right to a megaphone.

2 likes 0 RTs

"censorship" refers to many very different things. A few: 1. dictatorships in which you vanish/die if you're caught dissing leadership 2. self-censorship caused by fear of mobbing/cancelling 3. deplatforming, which in practice sometimes amplifies messages or polarization—oops.

2 likes 0 RTs

Proponents of freedom of speech are broadly opposed to all of these, but it seems to me 1 & 2 are profoundly different than 3 as they employ *harsh punishment*, whereas deplatforming is more like "you don't have to go home but you can't stay here".

1 like 0 RTs

What we're talking about with tech censorship is much more like #3. The risk of losing your platform may be a deterrent—a kind of punishment—but on a different scale than 1 or 2. Losing your platform may set back your cause but it doesn't end or ruin your life.

1 like 0 RTs

The issue that we're facing here is one of symmetric vs asymmetric weapons. Banning someone from a platform can be done to anyone regardless of whether they're trying to use the platform to foment hate & violence or whether they're trying to use it to understand all views.

Remember: we're not going to get anywhere good trying to eliminate evil.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@vgr from Carse's Finite & Infinite Games: > Evil is the termination of infinite play... to eliminate the play of another regardless of the rules. > Evil is never intended as evil. Indeed, the contradiction inherent in all evil is that it originates in the desire to eliminate evil.

2 likes 0 RTs

It is somewhat a historical contingency that people who make tech platforms have the technical power to decide who gets to do what on those platforms. But even within those orgs, who gets to decide, and why?

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Who gets to decide? Who gets to decide who gets to decide?

2 likes 0 RTs

So the design question, of course, is "could a platform like twitter be modified to deeply *actually* incentivize both free speech *and* empathic listening, in ALL directions, without it losing its magic and having everyone (or half of everyone) just leave?"

2 likes 0 RTs

Although there are two different things that "half of everyone" leaving could mean. If it's one side of a political polarity (along any axis) that would probably reinforce polarization, escalating tension medium-term though short-term the remaining side might feel relief & ease.

1 like 0 RTs

If instead the "half of everyone" who left was the most extreme people at multiple poles... well, this might create space for those who want to talk to others who see things differently and understand each other. Will extreme folks find other platforms? Ofc. They have already.

The generator of many of the above tweets feels related to the one that generated this voting system idea:

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Novel voting system idea 💡 Ranked choice plus in order to win the winner needs >67% of people to have actually ranked them at all. Any candidate acceptable to less than ⅓ of population simply disqualified. No more alienating half the population while riling up your base.

1 like 0 RTs

The obvious critique is "what if nobody gets 67%" and my main answer to that on a presidential scale is "well, there are succession laws. who is Speaker of the House?" Approximately this falls back to the prime-minister model used in UK & Canada already.

1 like 0 RTs

Too easy to game things like this 67% thing on smaller scales than elections though, if we were try to hold referendums on things like whether a given tweet is trying to communicate in good faith or not.

1 like 0 RTs

But there is the advantage that unlike changing an electoral system, with a privately-owned platform, to some extent the people who own it can decide how to run it, without having to pass votes in order to decide that.

Thread · Gumroad's operating philosophy as inspiration for meta-teams

Whoaaaa this article about how Gumroad works is very cool. I resonate so hard with "freedom at all costs." Very much how I created @CompliceGoals and how I've continued to run it. Lots of inspiration here for my meta-team concept too. 🧵 sahillavingia.com/work

Finding this article a really powerful inspiration for something I've been thinking about about collaborative self-energizing meta-teams. Rest of thread written as if reader has read this thread, though you don't have to go read it if you don't want.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Wanting to write a thread on the larger meta-vision I have that inspired me to make this move. This really resonates with that philosphy: > People can work on what’s fun or rely on their intuition, because as long as we remain profitable and keep shipping, we tend to get to the important stuff eventually. Our public roadmap helps Gumroad's creators hold us accountable.

4 likes 0 RTs

There are other things that resonate less. Gumroad seems very focused on shipping: > There are no retreats planned, and no social channels in Slack. There are limited opportunities for growth. Whereas my meta-team concept is very much oriented to deep-connection & also scaling.

4 likes 0 RTs

> In 2020, Sid left Gumroad to start his own creator economy company, Circle, together with former Gumroad coworker Rudy Santino Okay this does resonate. Piece of team incubating ideas, breaking off to do something new. I'm imagining often more fluid transitions though maybe.

2 likes 0 RTs

> Working on Gumroad isn't a majority of anyone's identity. I'm imagining this kinda in the meta-team, re any particular team, because people would be doing multiple things. But at least some people might have some identity in relation to being in this meta-team.

Been thinking a lot about "deserving" lately. Trying to decide if I believe in it at all. Think it almost certainly makes no sense to ask myself if I deserve something, but on the other hand, I want to be able to say "everyone deserves happiness" so I can include myself.

@AaronEstel I mostly think deserve is a broken concept, although it's important to integratedly learn how it's broken, which means not negating any parts of yourself that are still thinking using it, but rather coming to understand what it's doing and how that can work better.

@utotranslucence Important diff between: - feeling the general truth "you couldn't have done anything else" - actually *seeing* exactly why they did it. If both of you understand why, it'll either already have changed or no change possible yet. Builds trust on level of shared expectation.

Thread · Listening to anger by hearing the collective pain behind it

Beautiful lil thread. Relatedly, a technique I have for listening to someone who is angry with me, when it feels like their anger is too big for the situation and my individual role in it, is to imagine everyone else who's ever been angry at anyone about the same sort of thing.

Nick @nickcammarata ·

To me it’s sort of beautiful that humans usually repeat roughly the same kinds of mistakes When I make a big mistake I imagine myself in a pub drinking and singing about it with people throughout history who made it too

6 likes 1 RT

So someone's mad because I didn't text when I was going to be late, and they had to wait. Can I feel the collective structural sense of what it feels like to be in that situation, and how anyone would feel that way?

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

3 likes 0 RTs

I get this image of a chorus of every time anyone has ever said "why didn't you tell me you'd be late?!" It's cacophonous to actually simulate hearing it all at once, but the point is to feel the intensity of the collective unheardness of this particular pain, as a shared pain.

2 likes 0 RTs

There's an aspect for me in this of kind of burning off karma or something. The more I can really listen to this person in front of me and hear their anger, the more humanity can collectively be heard about this shape of thing.

2 likes 0 RTs

This also applies to my own experience, in that moment. Maybe the way they're chewing me out is connected to a deep archetype, but maybe the experience I had of not knowing how to do anything different is too! I don't have to *like* them yelling at me.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

idk who needs to hear this, but…   You don't have to like it. That thing you don't like? That book? That person? That situation? That awful sound? That thing your partner/parent/roommate/kid does? You don't have to like it. You get to have whatever experience you're having.

1 like 0 RTs

I also don't have to sit and listen to them yelling at me at all if it doesn't make sense to me to do that. Important to not feel trapped in such situations! If the frame I'm offering here feels like it empowers you to do something you want to do, then great! No obligation tho!

when I tell someone on twitter that I'd love to hear about some possibly quite personal thing about themselves / their life, is it necessary to add "if you want to share" or is it implicit that they should feel free not to indulge my curiosity?

@ElodesNL I think it's often redundant and implicit, AND also often nice. In my recent research into trust, I've found one often needs to say things that really feel like they could "go without saying". Makes a huge difference to some, but it's hard to tell who needs to hear it!

1 like 0 RTs

@ElodesNL One way I've pointed at this is like, people have been sufficiently traumatized around the validity of their own experience that it's not enough to not invalidate it—we need active regular validation by ourselves and others, in order to feel safe (in the meantime, while healing).

From the outside, I can say "well, it's partially an incentive thing". And that's true. But from the inside, "the incentives" are no excuse, as this article (aimed at academics) makes clear many times over: talyarkoni.org/blog/2018/10/0…

What are the actual leverage points? Is it the case that $10/mo for [ALL THE MUSIC] is just too low to pay the artists enough and the company enough? Can't spend it twice. Some numbers would definitely be too low. How do we know $10 is enough?

While writing this thread I rewatched this brilliant hilarious deadpan interview. While playing almost clueless, Jack unambiguously cautions would-be IPO investors against the $10/mo streaming business. youtube.com/watch?v=LB1sTH…

Seems like (if you read the original thread I QT'd) Spotify is maybe making it work for the investors by screwing over the actual artists. What enables this to happen? It's not as simple as "capitalism". Who gave Spotify the capital to be unsustainably competitive? VCs? Saudis?

@paulg has a classic essay Do Things That Don't Scale This Spotify thing, and the way Uber has undercut taxis, are sort of the opposite. It's like "claw your way to scale by any means necessary because you can't afford not to". paulgraham.com/ds.html

I have a lot of respect for companies relentlessly seeking the smoothest possible user experience & not settling for existing low expectations. Amazon does amazing work here too! What's confusing: in all these cases, half of the better UX is design, half is externalities.

Has anyone tried building paywalled email? As in: you have to pay someone to email them I've heard a few people mention it… …I guess tough because email is a standard, but... let's see, maybe an extension to SMTP or MIME…

Jordan Moore @jordanmoore ·

@Malcolm_Ocean Inboxes should be paywalled by default IMO.

5 likes 0 RTs

Okay, so some sort of header on outgoing cold mail that says "here's the maximum I'm willing to pay for delivery of this email", and then supporting clients would detect that header on incoming mail and charge or reject accordingly (complex multistep process but doable)

2 likes 0 RTs

Then if such a client receives a message that doesn't have a Delivery-Fee-Maximum header nor an Delivery-Fee-Expected-Waived header (for friends / existing contacts) then the client auto-replies saying "you need to pay $X at <url> for delivery to this address"

2 likes 0 RTs

I guess pragmatically the way to do this would be to just give your actual friends an email address that works normally, but anywhere you're listing an email, list the paid one. Eg I get cold sales emails from people on IndieHacker regularly.

4 likes 0 RTs

I wouldn't want a $2 fee they might pay to turn into me feeling obligated to actually reply to those though. And guessing most wouldn't pay, which is the point. *sigh* I enjoyed this ideation of how it might work though!

How long until twitter supports [[Roam]]-style page ref syntax? I'm serious! Don't forget—all of the following features existed as user-created hacks before they were part of twitter's design:  • @-mentions  • RTs  • #hashtags  • cashtags (eg $AAPL)

21 likes 2 RTs

And what would such a feature DO? Obvious thing for it to mean, I guess, given how it works in Roam, would essentially be a user-specific hashtag—it would click thru to other tweets by that user that reference the same page name. (Plus maybe show other users w same page name!)

This could maybe be implemented by an extension developer, actually, like @nosilverv's @thlpr or @geoffreylitt's @TwemexApp: detect in-tweet roam-style pages and convert it to a link to from:username "page name" [[hackable web]]

@sashintweets the imagery of "broken" is a metaphor with rich connotation. it implies some damage occurred to cause the present limitation a healthy newborn baby has lots of room for improvement but calling it broken would be profoundly misleading about what that improvement looks like

0 likes 0 RTs

@sashintweets the issue here is that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" does not apply to complex organic evolving systems, for which "broken" is not an appropriate adjective (converse would be referring to your car as "sick"; it won't heal itself with plenty of rest!)

Venkatesh Rao ☀️ @vgr ·

It is a category error to apply the adjective “broken” to a complex system. Complicated systems break. Complex systems merely enter hostile configurations relative to you. They’re not fixed by your functional expectations. They’re still working. Just not for you.

@sashintweets here's a thread I really like that talks about the flow-breaking phenomenon of when thinking of yourself from the outside gets in the way of actually experiencing and evolving your life directly

Guy @nosilverv ·

The author discusses the difference between people who 'flow' through life and people who feel the need, and attempt to, explicitly self-improve. He (you know it's a he) is pointing at a real distinction, tracking Heidegger's: that between present-at-hand and ready-to-hand.

There’s nothing to learn about disease or climate from Covid, because, in a risk context, it is a non-issue that we convinced ourselves was an X-risk.

What’s the word for the feeling of sheepishness you get when you’ve been avoiding a task that seems big and onerous for days, and then when you finally do it, it’s easy and takes 10 minutes?

@utotranslucence Idk if there's an existing word but it kinda rhymes with the "all bark no bite" image of a dog... or something about facades (all facade, no building lol)

@utotranslucence I've been looking for a related, more general word, to describe how it's almost always really hard to accurately imagine how it will feel to be inside of an experience different than the one you're currently having. Tho often we forget to even make a serious attempt to do so.

Thread · When suggesting workarounds reads as not listening

Sometimes I am temporarily incapacitated in some way (eg tiredness or fixated on a task) and I do things that upset people. When I try to say "you could try getting my attention by...", they think I'm saying that it's their job to ensure I don't upset them, & feel blamed.

9 likes 0 RTs

This is really frustrating to me because, sure, there might be something I can do about this ultimately, to have more capacity in these situations, but in the meantime 𝙄 𝙙𝙤𝙣'𝙩 and it seems to me like there's some lower-hanging fruit they could pick that would improve things.

4 likes 0 RTs

Guessing that part of what is going on here is: 1. they don't yet feel seen re their experience of my impact on them 2. in the convo, getting heard about that is more important than solving thing 3. they read my "here's a thing to try" as not listening!

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

topnotch thread about men & anger I have noticed times myself when I don't have mental space to orient to solutions to my problem because I'm utterly preoccupied with wanting to feel heard more than anything else. twitter.com/ElodesNL/statu…

I think also when people hear my suggestion, they think that if they tried it, it would be sort of enabling me to continue doing a thing that they think I shouldn't be doing. And that may be true in some sense*, but them treating it like that doesn't dialogue with my generator.

3 likes 0 RTs

There's often an assumption that if someone really understands how what they're doing is hurting you, then they'll stop. This piece doesn't account for the extent to which we don't understand what's generating our own behavior in the first place, so we can't change it. Need both.

3 likes 0 RTs

Part of where this assumption comes from is a counteractive model of behavior change where you try to repress the generator and immediately do something different. This is (self-)coercion, and creates tangles & internal conflict, on net.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Someone recently told me, "When you talk about X, you sound like you think you have all the answers." I replied, "I can sorta see what you're pointing at and why that undermines X. I don't know what in me is generating that… until I understand why, I'll probably keep doing it."

4 likes 0 RTs

Anyway, pragmatically, what / can do in this situation is to reaffirm my own intention to integrate rather than layer, and then figure out how to understand what the other person needs, both so I can help where I can, and so they can get space to hear how they can help.

Twitter has a lot of room for improvement here too, to be clear. The convergence is still very sparse—only one QT at a time, no easy way to explicitly juxtapose 2+, to show parallel or paradox. Here's a hacky example of me doing it with screenshots twitter.com/Malcolm_Ocean/…

@reasonisfun @m_ashcroft Whoa! I'm thinking about "if there were a verb for "to believe falsely", it'd have no first person conjugation" & other less poetic ways of making the same point it seems obvious to me now that one can find one's ~false beliefs within "where do I disagree with (or distrust) myself?"

@utotranslucence @RichDecibels +10 to this whether or not you do the contract, this is seriously worth thinking about in relation to values conflict it may be the conflict is more about bureaucracy & approach to defense than defense itself

This is such, such, a potent extension of the original quote about talent & genius! Sometimes the target becomes more visible once you've hit it, which is what happened to @RoamResearch & @Conaw last year.

Conor @Conaw ·

Talent is hitting a target others can’t hit Genius is hitting a target others can’t see Therefore... To the outsider watching Genius at work, tends to appear either like they are a lousy shot, or absolutely insane Please try not to see yourself through the eyes of the blind.

[3 more photos]

quoting @colinmegill: @Conaw if you are visualizing something massive you are going to make 1000s of different decisions yearly monthly weekly hourly and a lot of them are going to be irrational from the standpoint of people who don't see what you see they won't even see it after you've done it

6 likes 0 RTs

Occurs to me that probably part of why I was able to give @Conaw useful feedback on Roam before it fully existed is that while I didn't know how to hit that crazy target of his myself, I was somehow somewhat able to SEE his target & help him aim. 👁️🎯

Conor @Conaw ·

@hmillerdev Few years ago @Malcolm_Ocean told me there were two twitter accounts that were doing Roam on Twitter @GRITCULT and @visakanv Took me a few weeks to make sense of either - but after I did, moved my digital life on here in big way.

#TwitterDayOff Main conclusive thing about this poll 👇 is that if I'm going for T-alliteration between twitter & a day of the week, Tues handily beats Thurs. I'm considering myself doing both Sunday & Tuesday, and encouraging others to join on whichever day(s) suits them best.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

I'm planning to explore taking 1 day every week off twitter, and getting lots of other people in our cluster/ingroup/scenius to join me--the same day! Which day shall it be?

2 likes 0 RTs

I'm concerned that doing it multiple days though would dilute it substantially unless there were at least a handful of other people down to do the exact same 2 days, or something like that. Don't wanna end up with parallel groups that never talk because opposite days on/off!

First, to get this out of the way: if you slip up and go on twitter when you intended not to, it's not the end of the world. Beating yourself up about it probably won't help. But it's okay if you do beat yourself up about it too.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

My suggestion if you realize you've found yourself on twitter on a day off would be something like, just tweet something that says: "Oops, I just remembered that today's a #TwitterDayOff for me! See you guys tomorrow!" and then sign off! (or just sign off without tweeting)

1 like 0 RTs

Anyway, having gotten out of the way that its not a cause for shame if you accidentally sign onto twitter on a day off, what are some things that might make that easy/effortless/natural/downhill?

1 like 0 RTs

I think it helps to announce it, so it's not just a vague intention but something that actually exists in the world, where other ppl are expecting you to do it. So put #TwitterDayOff or #TwitterlessTuesday in your bio, maybe pin a tweet the first few times, etc. What feels good?

1 like 0 RTs

Then if you're like me and you tend to leave a bunch of twitter tabs open, you may want to stow them somewhere. There's no perfect option for this til I tempt someone into making Tinder For Tabs....

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

brb just reinventing the entire concept of web browser including questioning the idea of "tabs" as a basic metaphor we forget this, but tabs are a weird vestigial bastardization of the old file/folder metaphor am writing about this publicly on roamblog: intertwingled.blog/#/app/malcolmo…

1 like 0 RTs

...but a few approaches to getting tabs out of the way: 1. literally close them. best, but can be hard to do since you may be like "wait I wanted to repl—" 2. snooze them with an extension like Tab Snooze. they'll come right back wednesday! 3. something like OneTab / SessionBuddy

2 likes 0 RTs

more approaches to getting tabs out of the way: 4. drag them to a different window/workspace that you can easily ignore for the day - preserves state fairly well, and pairs nicely with 5. use a userstyle that overlays a thing covering any tabs that ARE open. mine looks like this:

2 likes 0 RTs

and of course you could also use something like stayfocusd, which is an extension that blocks sites. it has a weekly schedule, which could make it really easy to just make twitter go away certain days of the week, with very little effort

2 likes 0 RTs

of course, if you have twitter on your phone (which tbh I do *not* recommend) then you'll want to log out or at least disable notifications from the app, or maybe block the app using some phone tool for doing that

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

I don't use twitter on my phone. Too easy to just scroll forever in the feed and click around and get lost. On my computer, mostly because of the keyboard, it feels a lot more downhill to reply to interesting tweets & start/continue conversations.

1 like 0 RTs

okay, will add more stuff if I think of it feel free to share suggestions here 🚀 oh! one last important thing. if you're the sort of person who will readily just displace your twitter urges onto reddit or fb or somewhere with *lower* ROI, then block those sites too!

2 likes 0 RTs

oh and also decide what the boundary of the day is gonna be for you. for me it'll probably be when I wake up til when I go to sleep, but I could imagine some people wanting to do midnight→midnight for reasons, or whatever just don't have it be ambiguous!

“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” — Howard Thurman I think about this quote sometimes. 🙃ethical framework: 1. perceive the whole world as best you can 2. love as thou wilt

28 likes 2 RTs

If you can simultaneously be experiencing profound ecstatic joy & pleasure to be doing what you're doing, and also be compassionately aware that others are experiencing profound nihilism, despair, & hell... ...and act from there... ...something becomes possible.

5 likes 0 RTs

It's hard to put words to the thing. @HFreinacht has a great bit in The Listening Society where at least names the dimensions (up, down, & range) I'm describing in the previous tweet, and notes them as important and oft-overlooked dimensions of maturity...

2 likes 0 RTs

He notes there's also: • symbol stage (how developed is the culture you are thinking in) • cognitive complexity (how sophisticated are the structures of thoughts you're able to think) These are clearly also key components to what it means to act well in the world.

But then also this!

You don’t have to be effective and you don’t have to be an altruist. You don’t need a logical or ethical framework. You don’t need to maximize impact or minimize regret You can do whatever you want forever for no reason

What might that look like? I'm interested in your thoughts. Newton's "if I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants" is one approach I like. Honoring both ones' forerunners stature as well as… ones' own… uhhh… capacity to balance on someone's shoulders.
