Thread · Why "safe space" norms create blame and double binds · 4 of 5 tweets

Replying to maybe gray @maybegray ·

@mauve_sky mmmm yes "safe spaces" deserved scare quotes

@maybegray @mauve_sky any place where people are encouraged (either explicitly or just by incentives) to reason "I'm uncomfortable → somebody is doing something wrong" are doomed to be shitshows. This has two forms, inward & outward blame. "safe spaces" probably usually create the outward version

15 likes 0 RTs

@maybegray @mauve_sky Everybody is traumatized and of course they will be triggered by things that have very little to do with what's happening. That's to be expected and needs to be held with love—so does the inclination to blame, which also comes from cultural trauma!

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@QiaochuYuan @visakanv My latest frame for this: everyone is basically living in a dream mashup of their current external situation and their old emotional meanings. Like dreaming you're at school but it's also on a boat somehow. & as in dreams, somehow the weirdness of this mashup goes unnoticed

5 likes 0 RTs

@maybegray @mauve_sky So yeah, "safe space" style norms say "it's your job to never trigger me", which isn't gonna work. People are already in the dream mashups, so no matter how hard you control your behavior, you can't *always* prevent them from projecting past abuses onto you! (& vice versa)

14 likes 1 RT

@maybegray @mauve_sky There can also be a kind of oscillation here, where to the extent that someone knows their discomfort isn't fully about the other person, if you feel obligated to change to accommodate them, they may end up avoiding sharing their experience.

David R. MacIver @DRMacIver ·

Talking about feelings is important, but people need to be able to present feelings to you as information without creating an implied obligation. If they can't do that then they will avoid telling you their feelings in order to avoid creating that obligation.

Thread · Developing a felt sense for scales at the keyboard · 6 of 7 tweets

1yr after having a 🎹 keyboard next to my desk listening to the first few chapters of Victor Wooten's Music Lesson, I've developed a WAY closer relationship with musical scales. I confidently hit a note, & can often just FEEL where in the scale it fits.

Visakan Veerasamy @visakanv ·

"When there's a note that doesn't work, there's a note on either side of the note that DOES work." NOBODY TELLS YOU THIS. "It's always easy! but we make it hard!". "A minute ago this note didn't work, but now it does. I can *erase* the wrong note by *making music*." Amazing

12 likes 0 RTs

Just now, listening to Inner Peace by @ClozeeOfficial, from her 2016 Shambhala set, and I'm like fuckyeah and just whack a C. Hmmm yeah, wants to jam up to the D, and that feels like home. So I noodle on down the D minor scale. But this isn't theory: it's Dm, not "Dm"

2 likes 0 RTs

I had a bit of fluency with this implicit scale feel on the guitar, but being able to see all the notes on the keyboard is making a huge difference, as is having it next to my desk and reach-out-able-to-play-with-one-hand-while-reading vs 🎸 in corner of room.

Other day was improv'ing on top of Coldplay's Up&Up , which has a funky thing where it's in G but during the chorus it has an F, so went hard on that F during other chords, and fucked around with a Bb. Realized after that's the blue note in Gmaj Blues 🔵

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@visakanv Something that blew my mind in that video, that seems obvious but I'd never noticed before: The blues scale is a pentatonic scale with one additional note added! (If you're familiar with black keys = pentatonic, here's the E-flat blues scale! 👇) Thanks @JacobCollier ♥🎶

2 likes 0 RTs

But I wasn't thinking about a "note" in a "scale", I just knew that that Bb sounded dirty as fuck. It was so raunchy I felt like I was violating a sexual taboo. It felt like I was getting away with a crime. It was so right, and so wrong. Fucking amazing 👅

8 likes 0 RTs

Anyway, it was all a bit intense, so as the song wrapped up I did a bit of aftercare and gently played the straight B and the F# that usually hangs out with G. Told @SarahAMcManus afterwards it was kind of like ruffling the cat's hair the wrong way, then setting it right. 😽

quoting @vgr: Motivation is a skill. Wanting things is not something you can just “do” beyond lollipop level at age 3. You have to learn to zoom in on the thing that vaguely attracts you, with enough precision that the motivational feedback loop kicks in. Like a starter motor.

@andy_matuschak I think @reasonisfun & @m_ashcroft will both dig this ^ It's also making me wonder how @CompliceGoals could be better for nurturing this cultivation. Already better than some things but lots of missing pieces...

@Malcolm_Ocean Agree that A’s argumentation is . . . well, embarrassing. Though in defence: 1. A’s first statement might be better understood not as “I’d like to lower body temp” but “I’d like to reduce discomfort.” Spraying water, while cooling, might very well feel more uncomfortable to A.

@AskYatharth My articulation wasn't adequate, but I'm trying to point at a very specific thing which I think is impervious to your defence: Where there are automatic systems in place to solve problems, people may associate the responses of those systems with the problem, & try to remove.

@Malcolm_Ocean @magghu I see both/and denying incompatibility of anything. Is that your take too? ie, both/and in the framework you described, can reconcile any differences?

@_awbery_ @magghu Hm. I don't think what I'm saying is about reconciliation. I think I mean more "BOTH/AND thinking can hold two (or more) things that appear to be so and appear to be incompatible, without trying to negate one of them to eliminate the paradox."

@jonnym1ller @buster @metalearn It wasn't until I was reading McGilchrist's book that I fully realized what a paradox *is*. 🤯 To left-hemisphere logic, it means "one or both of these propositions need to be rejected". Does one need to get untraumatised in order to do (objective, good) research into psychology?

@reasonisfun It's simultaneously • 98% an incentive problem • 92% a problem of not understanding context & nebulosity (could maybe be fixed by grokking McGilchrist's work) • 85% an ontological problem (presuming you understand the basic terms of what you're studying)

6 likes 0 RTs

@reasonisfun sum >100% because factors overdetermine current shitshow. No matter what else you do, if you don't solve the incentives you can only do 2% of good work. Fake #s. Submission of researchers to these awful incentives is a function of 2 & 3 above, and their own being traumatized.

2 likes 0 RTs

@reasonisfun Current frameworks of psychology analyze pathology, not healthy functioning. However, even if you *were* to switch that, from my perspective there are approximately zero deeply-healthy humans to study, and our concepts of humans reflect this.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@QiaochuYuan @a_witch_in_time Yeah, I generally phrase this as "because the DSM measures deviation from norm, it is structurally incapable of recognizing a dysfunctional condition that everyone has." I tried to say this to a group of ppl at YC120 and one of them literally said "but then it would be normal!"

4 likes 0 RTs

@reasonisfun So unless you've somehow managed to get deeper-than-your-own-capacity insight (perhaps spiritual, perhaps philosophical) into what could be possible for human beings, then the concepts you bring to your researcher would necessarily be at least somewhat limited by your own trauma.

2 likes 0 RTs

@reasonisfun Plus of course inasmuch as the irrational memeplex (as David Deutsch puts it) is still actively functioning within science etc (which it totally is) it is held in place in large part by trauma, and so reasoning clearly rather than rationalizing also requires unlearning thusly.

4 in 10 Singaporeans voted against the PAP, but 9 in 10 elected members of Parliament are from PAP #ge2020 x.com/bignoodlesyeo/…

@visakanv without commenting on whether or not SG has gerrymandering issues (I have no info on that) it's worth noting that the First Past The Post means that if voters were evenly distributed, and constituencies were also even, 61% pop vote overall = 61% votes per area = 100% of seats

2 likes 0 RTs

@visakanv I got nerdsniped & wrote a little script to demo this to myself, with just 10 ridings and 100-350 votes in each. At 61% pop vote, gets all PAP consistently. At 53% pop vote, 0-1 WP seats. At 51% pop vote, 2-4 WP seats. Just toy model, but illustrates how %s don't scale to seats

@QiaochuYuan There's a difference between saying the metrics and incentive systems we use are bad or damaging, and actively attempting to subvert them to make the system worse. Schools are worse than many alternatives, but cheating as a response is a negative-sum defection game.

@davidmanheim @QiaochuYuan It doesn't subvert the metrics themselves, but it may subvert the metrics grasp on one's soul or one's validity. Like setting aside the idea that the school gets to say if you're good enough and that you ought to have to try & prove yourself.

@davidmanheim @QiaochuYuan Maybe put another way, cheating at the Olympics is dishonorable because it undermines the meaning of it. The meaning of school is already fucked because students are coerced into it, and undermining that meaning has its own validity.

You're an AI trying to pass a Turing test. There is a human who is testing you, and your mission is to get them to think you're also a human, not an AI. The conversation takes place through a chat interface. This is a transcript of that chat log. Tester: (👆the full input 👇 AI)

After the above, it got a little loopy in a boring way, so I re-rolled once and now it's loopy in a self-aware and hilarious way: the Tester and the AI argue over who's supposed to start the conversation, then the AI says: "This isn't how a normal human would react."

Sam re GPT-3. Kinda makes sense. The ability to respond reasonably to chat messages, based on having digested the entire internet is here/imminent, and feels human enough. However—we're going to learn something about ourselves from this experience.

Sam Altman @sama ·

@danielbigham One thing I've updated towards thinking is that the Turing test is less interesting than it seems. A big moment for me will be when AI can prove a new mathematical theorem.

2 likes 0 RTs

It feels human enough partially because it's high quality, & also partially because in practice we don't actually read what others write very thoroughly! I once read a chat exchange aloud & discovered I'd responded without having parsed what was said at all.

2 likes 0 RTs

In this particular case... I'd say I got like 30% of the meaning that was actually there to get, plus like another 15% backwards because I misread it. But the person probably didn't notice, because I was just kind of responding with some related ideas, kinda jamming, you know.

One thing that stands out: GPT-3 does lots of things remarkably well, and lots of things poorly. Here's a nice example of the latter, from @gwern (gwern.net/GPT-3#parity): it fails to learn how to determine the parity of a bit string

@michael_nielsen @gwern Inspired by an AI Dungeon example where math is discussed in simple language, I seem to be having decent results here. I had to... not just say what parity IS but HOW to calculate it ("count the number of 1s") and then it sort of walks itself through decently. Tho kinda confused

Thread · Self-organized criticality and civilization as a sandcastle

Self-Organized Criticality is a really important concept, and basic to how the universe manages to end up being interesting. These dynamics are fractal so they show up on all scales (eg neurons). @TaylorPearsonMe's thread is great. I'm going to share some thoughts of my own 🧵

Taylor Pearson @TaylorPearsonMe ·

Why are there decades where nothing happen? And why are there are weeks where decades happen? Why does volatility cluster? One model I've found that helps me think about this is a sand pile

31 likes 7 RTs

Taylor uses a discrete grid-based sandpile model developed by Per Bak etc in the 80s. You can also model this dynamic with straight up physics: any given grain has a maximum slope, above which it collapses. Gradual addition of sand moves to critical, then avalanche corrects.

7 likes 0 RTs

What's remarkable about this model is it points out that the critical slope is a natural attractor based on these two forcing functions. The system *naturally tends towards* situations in which a small addition of sand can cause a huge avalanche (power law distribution)

15 likes 1 RT

Recently I was struck by a sense that society was in some sense a SANDCASTLE 🏰, built up WAY past the critical slope… but somehow held up with a:  💧 water to make sand stickier  🛠️ fortifications: plastic shovels propped up against it  👏 active hands-on attempts to patch it

11 likes 0 RTs

Sustainability is often discussed in terms of resource depletion This new sandcastle metaphor allows us to talk about not just the consumption of the society, but the instability of the structure itself: It's not simply that it will run out, but that it will fall down.

11 likes 3 RTs

Moreover, like any falling down, civilizational collapse would involve a release of potential energy! Since the industrial revolution we've used more energy than is sustainable, but there's also a sense in which a lot of that energy remains latent & poised to explode.

6 likes 0 RTs

It's clear that society has more dimensions & complexity than just a pile… …which means that the state-space has multiple options, so we can ask:  "what shape would it collapse into?"  "what shape would we like it to collapse into?"  "can we catch it with new structures?"

7 likes 0 RTs

Another question here might be "what sorts of factors play the role of the forcing functions in the sandpile?" Mutual Causality in Buddhism & General Systems Theory, which I was reading when I had the above insight, suggests:  💞 a pull to commonality  ↔️ a pull to distinction

8 likes 1 RT

Obviously it's way more complex than that, but I think that's part of it. She points out how those two need to be in balance for maximum intelligence:  👥 total unity & totalitarianism blocks info flow  🅰️ total chaos & anarchy lacks coordination

7 likes 0 RTs

I have a lot more questions & ideas I'm exploring here, which you can find on my roamblog here on the page [[Self-Organized Criticality]] roamresearch.com/#/app/malcolmo… Here's a sketch I made while thinking about it. Pink star is in the totally-unstable sandcastle region.

Twitter would be a bunch of isolated trees if it didn't have QTs. I would say QTs don't allow full-on *mating* though... they're more like horizontal gene transfer between bacteria?

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

This is part of a much deeper exploration I've had for some time which is like, what kind of relationship can two tweets have to each other? Currently it's basically: - reply - QT (quote-tweet) but there are many implicit things those official relationships can each mean!

2 likes 0 RTs

Full mating of tweets would be if you could QT two tweets at once, or reply to two tweets at once. Currently happens via screenshot, eg my #Twiptych series or the example you can find if you click through below

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Twitter is currently very divergent: you can't bring 2 tweets together by replying to both or by QTing both at once. That's a HUGE limitation to what kinds of thoughts we can represent here. Ends up as screenshots—cumbersome & loses context. twitter.com/Malcolm_Ocean/…

Debates about public vs private miss that the majority of things both ARE and OUGHT to be neither, but rather some other category that's more conscious & contextual. Is there a word for this other category?   "not private, not public, but ______" Do we need to coin such a word?

Specifically I'm talking about utterances here. "Is what you just said private?" "No, but it's not public, it's ______" Again: this is actually the implicit default, in most cultures, but since it doesn't have a name, it can easily feel like "if it's not private, it's public"

At some point I'll need to write up my actual rant about this topic. Wasn't planning to do that today but the TL;DR is something like: "norms of discourse that expect it to be explicit whether everything is public/private are brittle & block learning & nuanced trust-building"

0 likes 0 RTs

Also they prevent flow of meta-information: A to B: "Thing" B to C: "A said Thing" B might not want A to know they told C, if B thinks maybe A was holding Thing as "private" even though not explicitly stated, & even though it made sense to B to share it with C (but not public!)

@pervexists69 The cheap laugh is arguably even prosocial, as it helps people hone their BS detectors. (Not to mention the value of the laugh itself, on many levels)

I think it was Alan Watts who said that laughter and anxiety are both two sides of the same coin. The very serious job of the comedian, as I see it, is to transmute anxiety into laughter. Voltaire I think had a similar perspective

@spearofsolomon @Meaningness @jim_rutt That understates the value of what @Meaningness said above. The situation would be equivalent however if all that people previously knew was "people are dying" and @Meaningness pointed out "they're getting the same disease—malaria—from mosquitos". @spearofsolomon @Meaningness @jim_rutt Doesn't answer where the mosquitos are coming from or how to address it, directly, but it points at a deep underlying structure. People are dying—*of malaria from mosquitos*. People are insecure—*due to diminishing systems for communicating basic adequacy*.

As I've started learning more about the dharma, I've been struck by the Buddha's apparent tendency to teach in third person rather than second person (imperative). Not "do this", but "the skilled practitioner does this and realizes such & such". Descriptive, not prescriptive.

This then seems like a more generalizeable principle: Seek to communicate (eg) the dharma in ways that invite people to recognize themselves in it.

quoting @Malcolm_Ocean: Hot niche take: Kegan's stages are universal only because everyone is universally afflicted with a dysfunction related to left hemisphere fixation. In a culture where this wasn't so, there would still be developmental stages, but they'd be nearly unrecognizable as Kegan stages.

@DanielleFong I've thought about this a lot, and it's a mix of all of those 4 options! Probably 2-3 working more full-time on Complice to generate way more revenue for the team (we'd neat it, to eat!) and the rest learning/writing/thinking/relating/strategizing etc

@DanielleFong I think you could do really effective co-learning because if one of you learned something you could probably explain it to yourselves or evoke the relevant insights, in ~10% of the time it took to learn it in the first place, to some extent (more or less, depending on the thing)

@DanielleFong Moreover, if already 25yo+, could probably attempt to diversify experiences a lot and still find it pretty easy to sync up based on shared background context & neurotopography, so could then have way higher-quality parallax than almost any ordinary team.

> On the whole, you could say that if you are defending your opinions, you are not serious. — David Bohm (page 48 of On Dialogue) This quote, I think, completely upends classic notions of what sincere, reality-oriented conversation looks like.

In case it's not clear, he doesn't mean "serious" in the sense of non-humorous. he means something more like "real" in the sense of "come on, let's get real". He means the opposite of what it would mean for an actor to not drop their role when cast goes for beer after the show.

Software interfaces undervalue peripheral vision! (a thread) My physical space is full of subtle cues. Books I read or bought most recently are lying out. Papers are lying in stacks on my desk, roughly arranged by their relationships.

Strongly endorse adding more screens just to keep apps in your peripheral vision! I have a screen that (almost) always displays my todo list / current task (from @CompliceGoals ). It has saved me from many a rabbit hole :)

Do you think the rate of genetic evolution in human populations has increased or decreased in the last 10,000 years?

@primalpoly I put "stayed about the same" but I could also see an argument for "decreased" based on memetic evolution superceding genetic evolution and thus decreasing selection pressure on the human genome.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@eriktorenberg @DavidDeutschOxf Worth reading Joseph Henrich's The Secret of Our Success, as well, for a detailed description of *how* memes outclass genes from an evolutionary perspective and how humans are optimized for memetic evolution.

Counterpoint: ichneumon wasps are a natural evil, and like guinea worms we might consider eliminating them. Also most people are not evil, mostly bleh at worst, and regarding someone's natural pity as evidence of their evil is a sign of a disordered philosophy.

quoting @wolftivy: @StephenPiment @WilliamAEden Ichneumon wasps are the agents of God. Most people cant handle this, because most people are evil. Evil is universalizing your own parochial impulses and interests as morality-as-such, rather than as a subordinate part of a greater whole.

@coyotespike @SarahAMcManus has a thread about the challenges of discerning things like "what sorts of species are bad?"

@coyotespike @SarahAMcManus I really like James Carse's definition of "Evil", which dovetails with what you're saying here

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@vgr from Carse's Finite & Infinite Games: > Evil is the termination of infinite play... to eliminate the play of another regardless of the rules. > Evil is never intended as evil. Indeed, the contradiction inherent in all evil is that it originates in the desire to eliminate evil.

“ADHD” is terribly named. It’s really a euphemism for “obedience” or “compliance” deficit.

@ThePerilousDeer You probably want ctrl+backspace. Deletes entire words and thus works in deterministic chunks.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@nbashaw @visakanv Okay, and while I was writing that earlier tweet, I noticed different times when I would mistype a word, and sometimes I would edit it by hitting backspace a few times manually, but other times I would just nuke the word and start over, and this was faster! Watch live 👁️👁️👇

why the phrase "mental models"? something about it has always felt weird to me… aren't all models mental? / aren't all mental models just "concepts"? is it like "mental math"? ie some models you have external to you to reference, but some live in procedural & working memory?

@ChanaMessinger @Malcolm_Ocean I imagine this has been updated within actual cognitive science, and it's totally possible people are correctly using "mental models" to refer to an updated/broadened construct. (This just hasn't been my impression though.)

@lisatomic5 @ChanaMessinger I looked it up on google ngrams just to find the history of the popularity of the term. One thing intriguing about it (and I think related to my 🤨) is that the plural ("mental models") is more popular than the singular ("mental model"), whereas the opposite for "concept(s)"

I’d like to keep content from two different Roam graphs on my account that meets criteria I specify in a query in sync with each other. For example, I’d like to be able to edit a page from either my public or private roam graph.

@RobertHaisfield OOOOOOOOOOOoh man yeah I also want this. I have 4 roams I actively use, and another couple I use periodically.
