Untangling aversion to marketing and two kinds of fakeness

further progress on this emotional coherence work today, trying to untangle my concepts of what "marketing" is/means I'm enjoying tweeting about my process here in public so I'm going to do that here too! some cool insights + a new model of "fake" in this thread

"It's so important to me to not be trying to get people to buy my stuff, since it's bad to market your own stuff. It's fake—cheating. So I can't really do any marketing at all. I don't even want to! I just want to wait & get lucky, even if that means not making much money rn."

at some point last week, maybe while writing this thread 👇 I noticed some aversion to some sort of marketingy activity and got a lot of delight from just revisiting my index card and going "wait, why am I marketing? I don't want to" and welcoming that

> Spend a day making elaborate plans and then disregard them completely to make whatever you think is most compelling. There's an app for this 👉 complice.co Encourages big picture thinking but doesn't let you actually force yourself to stick with your plan. twitter.com/visakanv/statu…

as I felt into that in today's Coherence Coaching session w @AskYatharth, I noticed a feeling of relief associated with consciously not marketing I think it was partially intrinsic to honoring my resistance, & also partially about these other schemas:

reasons (learned via coherence work today) why my system prefers feeling powerless in relation to figuring out good marketing for complice.co:  💪 "I don't want to be controlling people"  🤑 "then I'd have to decide how wealthy I want to be"  💁‍♀️ more demand on my time

then I noticed something like "if I do marketing, people will SEE ME as fake, they'll judge me, they won't trust my motives" which is a judgment I've definitely had about people! (though not always—some marketing feels good. so that's interesting!)

I realized there are two kinds of fakeness when it comes to marketing: overt aggressive salesy marketing nervous-hiding-creepy marketing

I'm not worried about doing the overt aggressive salesy marketing. I know I hate those godawful landing pages that try to frame it as if only an idiot or person who hated themselves wouldn't immediately buy the product. I'm not gonna do that.

But, maybe because I wasn't always so confident I wouldn't do that, I've learned an opposite pattern! (which is also fake!)

I realized today that in trying to avoid overt aggressive salesy marketing I have fallen into a different kind of fakeness, which is pretending that I *don't* want people to buy my product. = the marketing equivalent of the Nice Guy™ who pretends he's happy being just friends

and so there's a sense of like, huh, if I'm being deceptive in some way, then it would make sense for people not to trust me!

and I'm noting by contrast that when I've seen people be more open about trying to succeed in business, they often get a lot of support from friends & fellow travellers
