Just watched this video with @LordChisholm, of @AnnaLeptikon & @vervaeke_john talking about reunderstanding rationality in light of relevance realization & the latest cognitive science. some notes/thoughts/intertwinglednesses in thread youtube.com/watch?v=c6Fr8v…

32mins: "you cannot optimally overcome framing effects! because the framing does often matter, because we are embedded in a social environment" "What matters depends not only on the numbers!" Relevant:

@Meaningness If I suddenly found myself on a trolley platform with perfect knowledge of trolleys and a weird choice to make, my attention would be on trying to understand the context of how the fuck I got there, not on the ethics of the weird choice.

at 39mins they're talking about use of procedural rationality as a way to step back from a default response. My thought was "why not go straight for expanded awareness directly?" see @m_ashcroft's work on this:

Michael Ashcroft @m_ashcroft ·

I have a talking point that I want to bang on about more in different ways that is "you can only respond to what you notice" not being able to notice something (if it lies outside your awareness) renders you choiceless expanding your capacity to notice things gives you agency

41mins: self-knowledge as a way to debias This is good but you can't simply apply a correction. Instead ask "in what ways does this situation remind me of ones I know myself to be biased about? can I tell how it's different?" See [[dream mashups]]

Everyone's basically living in a dream mashup of their current external situation & their old emotional meanings. Like dreaming you're at high school but it's also on a boat somehow. & as in dreams, somehow the weirdness of this mashup goes unnoticed malcolmocean.com/2021/06/dream-…

49mins: interface theory of perception I'd say in some sense "there is no non-veridical", there's just overgeneralizations. Though this may be the mistake JV says the pragmatists made of "reducing truth to relevance".

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

overgeneralizing is inevitable, because we're always explaining the whole of our experience (so far) with whatever models etc we have, and the models don't have enough detail, so we need to stretch them to cover the whole

53mins: stoked to hear a mention of Gary Klein's Naturalistic Decision Making framework. It also gets a mention in my Dream Mashups post, talking about how triggers & PTSD are poorly organized manifestations of how the brain is designed to encode wisdom: malcolmocean.com/2021/06/dream-…
