@tangjeff0 @RoamResearch @Conaw The main things Roam is missing atm to be able to do this are: - notifications - the ability to have blocks that are clearly timestamped, single-authored, and not naturally editable-later, so that they represent a particular utterance (even if later "updated")

4 likes 0 RTs

@tangjeff0 @RoamResearch @Conaw Oh and this second thing would be super valuable to have for external quotations as well—if I copy a book in, then page-link a phrase it in, then rename the page, I don't want the original quote to be edited! & visual distinction, even when blockref'd elsewhere, "not my words"

4 likes 0 RTs

@tangjeff0 @RoamResearch @Conaw Anyway, there are a few other key pieces, and exactly what's needed depends on whether we're talking a chat layer built on top of a Roam API, or making modifications to core-Roam to directly support these kinds of use-cases. I imagine we'll see a mix of both.

@Malcolm_Ocean What's wrong with IRC clones? (Discord?) In another words, what functionality are you missing?

@mechanicalmonk1 Snarky answer: I don't want to talk with the people who are already on Discord. Which wouldn't be a problem but Discord apparently doesn't support being offline on one server while online on another. Dealbreaker; I often need to be unreachable by everyone but a particular team.

1 like 0 RTs

Replying to monk @mechanical_monk ·

@Malcolm_Ocean One thing for me: I'd like the UI to be more supportive of treating conversations (channels) as impermanent: a conversation starts with the goal of resolving something specific; it includes some people; after we resolve the issue, the conversation is archived

@mechanicalmonk1 Yes, this is a core piece, but I think this is not simply a matter of UI & functionality but beginning from inadequate design metaphors. "channel" instead of "conversation" being an example

Conor @Conaw ·

14. The problem with existing notes systems is that they're locked into metaphors from when everything was analog. Files go in folders, and can get tags. At best, they add in the capacity for links to other files-- since links are now something everyone will be familiar with.

@metamitya @knovigator @Mention Can you get someone's attention who's out walking around on their phone? Or do they have to have it open? This is far from the only blocker, but it's one reason why we're not just eg using Roam instead of slack already—there's a need for live-attention-sculpting.

@Conaw One reason "don't start sth until you finish sth" is borked is highlighted by cybernetics. The principle of increasing pressure to finish seems 👍, but ppl don't realize this will also create pressure to never start anything unless you're already certain you want to finish it😬

Thread · Searching tweets from people you follow as a threading workflow

Hey twitter-searchers / meta-threaders (@visakanv @conaw @QiaochuYuan) One cool new thing I've been playing with recently is when I'm threading & want something to QT on a topic, searching for tweets from "people I follow".

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

This workflow is very different from searching for some specific tweet I remember seeing/writing. It's led to some fun serendipity, where I discover in the course of articulating something that one of my friends had a related thought awhile ago!

6 likes 0 RTs

Like eg this 👇 which I vaguely recall seeing but I shrugged at it the time because I hadn't deeply appreciated Carse then.

Callum @callumflack ·

Oh. Carse’s finite v infinite is a stupid simple match to McGilchrist’s representational left-hemisphere v perceptional right-hemisphere.

7 likes 0 RTs

So this kind of process naturally resurfaces things at exactly the sort of moment I'm ready to really appreciate them! This tweet 👇 I recalled just now from yesterday, & found using `twf not ready` (which the reply says)

Oshan Jarow @OshanJarow ·

Is there some weird German word for the experience of finding the perfect articulation of an idea you thought was your own, in a book written before you were born? It’s like Gorz went inside my head & wrote it all down for me to find one day, when I’m ready.

7 likes 0 RTs

As indicated in QT above, I have a custom quicksearch for "search tweets from people I'm following" so I can do it as one thought. To create, go to chrome://settings/searchEngines or whereever and use this url: twitter .com/search?q=%s&pf=on (space inserted to avoid linkify)

6 likes 0 RTs

In a sane #TwitterReplacement, first of all this sort of resurfacing would happen naturally while composing, without needing to manually trigger. Various ways to do this; even non-clever ones are awesome, though I'm sure clever algos could make it better (or awful)

6 likes 0 RTs

Secondly, there would be more categories than "tweets ever from people I'm now following". I would love: - tweets I've liked - tweets I've retweeted - tweets I've ever seen ever - tweets I've replied to (& for each, an option to sort by eg like-time, not just tweet-time)

quoting @Evolving_Ego: UBI is a weird policy for me. If it's kept modest (and other programs are kept in place), it's better than the status quo. If it's too big, it's worse than the status quo. The living-wage-UBI types underestimate the effect a completely free ride would have on work motivation.

Playful & srs: obligatory parentheticals for coronavirus stats. Anytime someone says "confirmed cases", append "(undetected cases may be 10-100× higher)" "First local spread" → "(THAT WE KNOW OF)" People talk about confirmed number as if it maps to the actual number.

Thread · Designing databases for uncertain and relative dates

Replying to mix irving @whimful ·

Challenge : how can I store dates which allow me to store varying precision e.g. 1991 (unspecified month/ day/ time) e.g. 8am March 1st, 2020 UTC This is for whakapapa records in #ahau

@whimful Cool challenge! Seems like actually 3 questions: 1. how to store in db in a way that allows machine-sorting of which events came before others 2. how to represent an individual date to users in ways that feel accurate (including uncertainty) 3. how to relate 1 & 2

0 likes 0 RTs

@whimful If you only needed 2, you could just use arbitrary strings ("the first full moon after the frost" ✓) If you only needed 1, you could just use fake timestamps, maybe with an additional "confidence interval" or "range" or something. So in some sense the challenge is the bothness

0 likes 0 RTs

@whimful One other interesting thing, given the context here, is that you may end up with instances where you know more about the relative dates of some events than the absolute dates. Eg age ordering of siblings, & maybe roughly the age difference... but not know which decade born in.

0 likes 0 RTs

@whimful An approach: Store 1 & 2 completely separately. When the user enters a string for 2, calculate a guess for 1, & display & confirm it, maybe next to some related events. So they say "B born fall 1906" & it shows that as a range next to "hot summer of 1906" & "C died winter 1907"

1 like 0 RTs

@whimful Another piece of approach: You might discover that for some dates the time-of-year is known more precisely than which year it is. That's true of how my memory works sometimes, and also makes sense—seasons are more different from each other than one year from the next.

1 like 0 RTs

@whimful So a single "range" might be inadequate. You might need the db to actually store separately - "time of year" - "year" (year might be a wide range, even if the time of year is precisely winter solstice) "D was born on the darkest day, 3 generations ago"

1 like 0 RTs

@whimful I actually think that this kind of design thinking is something that's missing from many modern apps too! It's relevant to human memory, even if data has exact date. I'd love to be able to search   `keyword + timeOfYear:{May,June,July}` in photos, email, tweets, &+

2 likes 0 RTs

@whimful Or "show me all photos I took between 9am and noon in the last year" (maybe I vaguely recalling that the photo I'm looking for was taken in the morning) Or "show me tweets about rhizomes from days I also tweeted about self-reference"

@Malcolm_Ocean @Meaningness And if you have perfect information at time T, why didn't you have at least some partial information at T-5, when there might have more options (like shouting at the trolley to stop.)

@tlbtlbtlb @Meaningness Haha I hadn't even thought of that 😂 Clearly the important Q of trolley situation is how the fuck you ended up there. Either: - you were unethically teleported into the situation - an actual trolley-worker is in a system that needs to be redesigned to prevent such situations

2 likes 0 RTs

@tlbtlbtlb @Meaningness I'm realizing that saying that the choice the trolley-worker makes is the relevant question is the same structural confusion as blaming "human error" when people make mistakes that are predictable given the interfaces they are provided. Wild case study:

ProPublica @propublica ·

In the early hours of Aug. 21, 2017, the USS John S. McCain took an unexpected left turn & collided with a tanker. 10 sailors lost their lives. In an internal investigation, the navy blamed the destroyer’s crew. But that’s not the whole story. Not even close. (THREAD)

@tlbtlbtlb @Meaningness For anyone reading this and wanting to understand this kind of thinking better, the field you're looking for is Systems Thinking. Have recently really been digging Peter Senge's The Fifth Discipline on the topic: (systems thinking is that discipline)

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@kissingsky @TuckerMax @tferriss I've found learning more about Systems Thinking has given me a perspective from which blame doesn't make any sense, because it requires cutting off part of the system from the rest of the system in a way that makes it harder to actually understand what's going on or change it.

It frightens me because this appears to suggest that going along with the flow doesn't lead to somewhere that's safe- entropy can't be trusted which makes things like "trusting in the process"/"taking a leap of faith" seem more daunting

@takecarecactus There's a general phenomenon here: trying to *not* do something often makes it harder not to do. Works better to actually intentionally do something *else* instead. eg if I say "don't think of a pink elephant" the way to succeed is to immediately get absorbed in something else

4 likes 0 RTs

@takecarecactus I've heard stories (possibly apocryphal) of people on long deserted roads hitting a single tree or post next to the road, because "don't hit the tree, don't hit the tree" fixates their attention on the tree and so they steer towards it. Contrast with "stay on the road".

"In all cases, two adults should be able to make any agreement or action between them, as long as they are both of sound mind, fully informed, and clearly consenting."

@Aella_Girl I think I basically agree, in a sense that's something like "extend the basic choice-making capacity of a person to multi-person units." Anything one person can choose to do, two can choose to do. So this isn't making any commentary on what actions are okay at all.

People are saying #DontTouchYourFace This behavior is in fact really powerful to prevent the spread of #COVID19 but the reality is that basically nobody can simply *perform* this behavior on command, so it's not useful advice! (& mostly stressful)

It's important, paradoxically, to stay relaxed & playful, rather than stressed and panicked. Both the cone of shame & #FacepalmTethers are kind of funny—and that's a bonus, not a drawback!

With the right length, you can maintain a workable range of motion, and when you take your hands out to be able to reach further, there’s nothing to carry or put away—the loops hang right next to your pockets, conveniently located for re-looping your hands when you’re ready.

4 likes 0 RTs

Even if you prefer a length where you can still (e.g.) bend down your head to adjust your glasses, it still has the powerful effect of making you aware every time you reach for your face. (There's also a webcam system that can do this at your desk 😂)

Isaac Blankensmith @Blankensmith ·

#FacepalmTethers Step 1: Get some thread or floss If not sure where to find some, ask around your house or pick some up at a nearby convenience store. (Important: to stay safe while walking, ensure it's thin enough to break if you fall & need your hands to catch yourself)

2 likes 0 RTs

#FacepalmTethers Step 2: Cut the thread Cut the thread to roughly the length of 3 times wrapped around your hand (you might want shorter; might start with this and try tying it a couple times to get the right length).

3 likes 0 RTs

#FacepalmTethers Step 3: Tie one end around your front belt loop. (Any secure knot will do here. For one that’s easy to untie later, look up Manger Hitch knot)

2 likes 0 RTs

#FacepalmTethers Step 4: Tie a slip knot at the other end Leave a few inches of slack between the knot and the end of the thread.

3 likes 0 RTs

#FacepalmTethers Step 5: Slide the knot towards your pants to make the little loop bigger, and insert your wrist through the loop!

2 likes 0 RTs

Now when you pull your hand towards your face, loop will tighten (if not already), & stop your hand from touching your face! Experiment w lengths to find balance of blocked-access-to-face and functional-range-of-motion that feels workable by just untying & moving the slip-knot.

2 likes 0 RTs

Repeat steps 2-5 for the other side, and you've got yourself a pair of #FacepalmTethers Now you have a way to make it easy not to touch your face. 😊➖👐

Spread the word about #FacepalmTethers as a simple hack to make no-face-touching easy! Anybody who is still working or taking public transit in an infected city (most of the US) can benefit from this device, which is virtually free and won’t sell out like masks or gloves.

@OneBigOh @Malcolm_Ocean This gives a sense of magnitude - currently, for every 100 infections 20 need hospitalization. Out of these 20, 5 require ICU. I can't find data on how many people die after ICU admission. But 20% is an indicator (overestimate in my opinion) of hospital burden vs. infection rate.

@Jamil_Madanat @OneBigOh This Italian doctor is saying that ICU risk rises around age 30... Sort of vaguely suggests your wacky idea above might look like kids staying overnight at a bunch of schools with healthy 20yo teachers... all infected & not going home to parents? 🤨

@Jess_Riedel Estimates in the article are that multiple regions in the USA have thousands of cases that (if tests were available) could be testing positive. This means that a few days ago was the equivalent to the moment Hubei locked down, but similar quarantine still not happening in USA.

0 likes 0 RTs

@Jess_Riedel The article goes on to note that each passing day is another 40% increase in infections, so by the time any remotely similar scale measures occur in the USA (if ever) it will likely be 10× Hubei scale (this takes about 2 weeks). 3k have died in Hubei, despite extra hospitals

@Jess_Riedel That's just one region. 60k deaths in USA only takes 2 regions getting 10× worse than Hubei before lockdown (& lockdowns may also cause people to flee to other regions) And that's without accounting for the hugely nonlinear increase in fatality rate w/ infection rate (see Italy)

@Jess_Riedel Like technically there could *maybe* be spare beds for 15%×800k if distribution matched infection distribution, but it won't. Once not enough hospital beds, death rate 📈. This is what's happening in Italy. & there probably won't be actions US can take at 800k to stop there

@Malcolm_Ocean Part of the point of making bets/predictions on single numbers is to avoid long disputes about fuzzy reasoning steps where we have poor data. If we don't disagree much on the single-number outcome, it's less likely to be a good investment of time.

@Jess_Riedel I'm with you on this in general, though it seems to me to be different in situations where we're trying to make decisions that influence the outcomes. There we need to consider counterfactuals and steps of reasoning as part of reasoning about other agents.

@Malcolm_Ocean I do not think I'm making a mistake there because this is the thing that is very unlikely to be allowed to happen. If you think 10M American deaths will happen, even *conditional* on half the population contracting the disease, we have a bet to make.

@Jess_Riedel I'm noticing I'm finding this thread stressful & aversive in some way. I think it's partly that I want my attention on doing what can be done to affect current leverage points, to *avoid these scenarios happening in the first place* & this feels like a distraction from that.

@ncasenmare Nice! Most important interactive aspect imo is stuff that people can control: social distancing. Simple version is something like X% of people stop interacting with others. Could also add one for large gatherings, but that probably adds too much complexity.

@jondubin Vomiting is fleeing, in this metaphor. Straight up. This morning, 15mins after taking 50mg zinc & 400mg quercetin on an empty stomach, I got nauseated & promptly threw it up. Noticed: - impressed by my body's ability to remove stuff - typical feeling of "peace" after vomiting

I'm open to repressed memories of childhood sexual trauma being a thing, but I'm genuinely curious how they know the memories aren't dreams. I've had lots of childhood memories I thought definitely happened but turned out to probably have come from dreams.

@Aella_Girl In doing a bunch of BioEmotive emotional processing I've come to call these "pseudomemories" Even knowing about false memories etc there's still a strong sense in which if I say "I have a memory of something" then I am claiming that it in fact happened.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

(Technically this was not a memory but what I call a "pseudomemory", because I can't locate it as a single specific autobiographical event in my life, and I'm not going to confidently claim it happened as stated. It was clearly very real to my emotional brain though.)

Going back to the thing at the top... this is an example of where it might've been helpful to be more conscious that there were other people listening, who may be less familiar with who's who in this 5-person convo. Then eg saying each other's names more: "Yeah, Collin, I agree"

Thread · Mapping a 20-button gaming mouse for a Linux workflow · 9 of 11 tweets

Working to get this sort of gaming-mouse extra-button workflow thing set up on Linux (Ubuntu) Currently using - Logitech G600 (20 btns!!) - libratbag for device deets - piper to map keys - compizconfig for mapping key-combos to commands Will post 🎉&🙃&🙄&😖&🤷‍♀️ in this thread.

Visakan Veerasamy @visakanv ·

One of the best things I've done for myself is get a gaming mouse and map the extra buttons to things I commonly use:

I loved Visa's idea of having a screenshot button, *especially* for select-area screenshot, since on linux that's usually a two-handed keyboard shortcut then you need the mouse again. Unfortch, piper doesn't seem to be able to convey the key combo... ctrl+shift get ignored here

However! That's just a temporary hurdle. I found that gnome-screenshot is the command, & specifically I want     gnome-screenshot -c -a (c=clipboard, a=area) So CompizConfig Settings Manager→Commands, and I can pipe that mouse btn at that cmd using random hotkey intermediary

Soliciting suggestions from @visakanv and others at this point for other things I might want to do with one mouse button—I have lots! 😆

I like the add-bookmark close-tab combo idea. I know I need a close-tab btn. But I don't think I want to use my browser bookmarks for this... would rather pipe these to @RoamResearch via API. Hmm... could imagine a browser ext that does this really elegantly, w title, date, etc

Also realizing I could add ↑→↓← to 4 of these btns, and then many of the window-management hotkeys I use could be done without my hand leaving the mouse. ctrl+super+💠 = position 🖼️ on monitors ctrl+alt+💠 = switch workspaces ctrl+alt+shift+💠 = move 🖼️ between workspaces

On reflection I think this is prolly not actually worth it, bc often I want to do a whole bunch of these in a row, and then having my fingers on the arrow keys is faster than bomping my thumb around. & my proprioception is already good enough to jump from mouse to hit those keys

0 likes 0 RTs

WAIT! 😯 Turns out I already use my thumb for this! (Always gaps in "how you {think you} work") This is uniquely possible w my Kinesis Freestyle 2 keyboard. Not just the absence of numpad—the angledness allows me to easily reach all of these keys with my thumb from the mouse.

This then furthermore suggests that I could be getting more out of the Home/End/PageUp/PageDown keys that run vertically along the right edge of the keyboard. Hmmmmmmm

@m_ashcroft @RoamResearch Re left hemisphere as bully:

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@jonnym1ller @SarahAMcManus People who looked at early brain data described left hemisphere as "dominant", something that has since been refuted—in the sense of the LH being more important. But the LH's *personality* does seem to be more "dominant" in the sense of domineering. 😮 twitter.com/Malcolm_Ocean/…

OK, this is the worst plausible take that my brain has ever handed me. You're going to hate it. I hate it. Given the evidence of difference in school performance and maturation rates, we should treat being male as a learning disability and support it as such.

@GeniesLoki ...we still have no idea what's genetically coded in human beings while culture is traumatizing them in ways (that differ with their genes).

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

.@QiaochuYuan OH MAN. you want to read The Birth of Pleasure by Carol Gilligan talks about moms & sons & trauma and about how it can be observed that boys of like 2-4 have a fuckton of emotional intelligence etc, which gets repressed so early people think it doesn't exist 😢

Replying to maybe gray @maybegray ·

@GeniesLoki does being male get in the way of learning or does it just get in the way of being tamed? is the gap really because of academic issues or is it there because boys have more issues with authority? genuine questions, haven’t read anything on this lately

@Malcolm_Ocean We don't but we have pretty good evidence from trans people that sex hormones are really powerful drugs that have non-trivial impacts on things that are quite important in an educational context, so there's probably something going on here.

@GeniesLoki Mmm true. I was mostly thinking about kids, like pre-puberty, where that's less relevant.

@Malcolm_Ocean I think (but wouldn't swear to the truth of this) that a lot of the attainment gap starts around puberty.

@GeniesLoki 🤷‍♀️ I'm pretty bearish on schools altogether

@Malcolm_Ocean @jonnym1ller @SarahAMcManus 4/ And yet at the granular level, "inhibition" is just a unit of energy currency that the brain uses, neither inherently restrictive nor permissive. It's part of the "shape" of what the brain does - in the same way that light and dark together form the "shape" of an image.

@Jeanvaljean689 @jonnym1ller @SarahAMcManus Yup, good points here re "net permissive". Though that doesn't remotely contradict this tweet here. Point is each side is less telling each other "do this" and more "don't do this" even when "this" is "avoid doing something" Still seems meaningful to me.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@jonnym1ller @SarahAMcManus > "LH needs to allow it to do that job" could sound prescriptive, and it sort of is, but it's also just highlighting that 70% of the corpus callosum is inhibitory, so the RH literally *can't* do it's job if the LH won't let it (& vice versa)

have you privately/personally experienced a month in your life that was longer than March 2020? I'd love to hear all about it. illness or loss of a loved one? divorce? depression?

@visakanv My life has enormous time dilation usually... factor of 2-3. Either it's been accelerating or its not something a human brain can adjust to. Subjective sense of "meaningful events per day" or something. This has sometimes been like 2-3 but other times like 4-5

2 likes 0 RTs

@visakanv It's not due to boredom or sadness, then or now. Due to intense learning & novel meaningful events.
