this grokking faith project is coming along AWESOMELY here's a teaser of a relevant fragment, from a recent Scott Alexander post reviewing a sequence on Trance.

I've very nearly gotten the same amount of clarity about what faith is, that I've had for years about what trust is y'all ain't ready

@tasshinfogleman like if this is really a core facet of what trust is, that's so obvious to everybody, then... that shape should appear elsewhere, and should have deep correlates in subjectivity? I don't think it's the same as the objective-reflexive distinction @Morphenius makes here... 🤔

LLM prompt I use many times a week: write a 1-paragraph summary of the core thesis of this writing, not as "this essay presents" / no reference to the author or the piece being summarized or "the thesis". just walking through the idea/logic in such a way that a very smart person reading it would immediately see the implications (which can also be spelled out, to be clear! ...but don't refer to "the implications" either)

119 likes 10 RTs

LLMs are very good at summarizing but by default they interpret "summarize" as more like a book report rather than a purposeful compression. they end up commenting on the writing as writing, or hitting each sub-point without attempting to convey the overall thrust

probably due to being trained on a lot of both random internet crap and on guess-the-teacher's-password homework. what are the purposes of such pieces? - content marketing - dumbing ideas down - getting people to read the original - convincing someone you read the original

I had to add quite a lot of caveats to get Claude to stop referring to the summary as a summary / adding outside text! like I had "no reference to the author or the piece being summarized" but it would say "the thesis" 😂 but now it treats the ideas directly, and it's great!

6 likes 2 RTs

this is likely to be quite helpful for using LLMs to summarize other pieces of writing, which is a very useful use for them so that you can get on with writing your own takes!

Catherine Olsson @catherineols ·

IMHO this is an *ideal* way to use LLMs' own words directly in your own writing, which usually is bad! For functional sections that *aren't* an expression of your ideas and taste — such as a summary of someone else's work — let Claude do that part, and put it all in italics.

quoting @LinchZhang: https://t.co/7YTZESUPn0

0 likes 0 RTs

before I added " ...but don't refer to "the implications" either" it would of course often say "the implications are profound:". now often I'm having it summarizing something whose implications ARE profound... but that phrase has got LLM smell, and also distracts

0 likes 0 RTs

also what's fun is that with popular enough ideas or books or essays, you don't even have to put in the full text! you can just say "...the core thesis of Michael Levin's work" and it'll lay it all out! here's it compared with a simple "write a 1-paragraph summary" prompt

0 likes 0 RTs

I wanted to speed up my loop on being able to run this prompt, so I built a system with keyboard maestro that lets me with one hotkey turn whatever's on my clipboard into a "core thesis" - and it'll fetch a url's content, or can just use a phrase copied from something I'm reading

I have a loose intention soon to take a bunch of works that have been influential for me, as well as some of my own writing or other unpublished pieces, run them through this, and then put 1-2 dozen summaries into a context window to get an LLM that's more on my wavelength

some outfit pics for a friend who wanted his style to go more in my direction. keywords: wizard mars semiformal style fashion clothing outfits flared

some of these I bought, some I didn't. ironically the main full-body shots I have of outfits are at clothing stores, because otherwise without a mirror it's hard to take a pic of my full outfit!

@Malcolm_Ocean Paired prompts, is sperate sessions: 1. "Come up with a dozen ways to approach (problem X)" 2. "Explain why most or all of these aren't promising or don't work" 1. "Based on this feedback, come up with a plan for X" 2. "Explain why this plan is still flawed" 1. "Update the plan"

@davidmanheim I've been wanting to make better systems for chaining alt-identity prompts like this I have a system for talking with an LLM in which it can make sub-calls to another LLM (that has no outer context), which I guess would mostly handle this although it's a lot of steps

at first I thought Claude was ultra-inclined to search because I asked "what are those again?" (implying some previous context, although I just meant I'd read them and was trying to recall them) but I removed that and it still search. it switched to drive after I turned off web

@Malcolm_Ocean @xuenay @Meaningness Oh wow, I get very different results in an incognito chat (claude 4.5 sonnet). Wild how such minor prompt differences lead to such drastic differences in output.

@_joshd @xuenay @Meaningness huh. still has claude's 2k word system prompt tho, whereas mine which is an API call does not oh and yours had extended thinking mode on — probably the biggest difference tbh

@Malcolm_Ocean From now on, I want you to act like a philosopher being peer-reviewed by your smartest, most hostile critic. Every claim you make must pass the test: ‘Would I defend this under oath, in front of someone trying to destroy me for even the smallest exaggeration or omission?'

@Shmoooooosh I'd love to see an example of that, including the kind of context where you use it

@Malcolm_Ocean Sure, but then you're suggesting that someone put up the money and time - while you don't have a way to bootstrap, like Khan academy, and you don't have financial incentives, like Uber, etc. It could be solved, but you need far more than just someone making an app!

@davidmanheim yeah the question of how to bootstrap is an interesting one. that's a good point.

@HephaistosF sure! but for many people, even noticing that dad is has different motives than he says he does is something that will require the kind of journalling that I describe (can eventually tell the dad but may have trouble getting the thoughts to consciousness first if that's step 2)

@HephaistosF guessing that you implicitly underestimate the degree to which most people don't experience these hypocrisies be glaringly obvious & unignorable (like, on some level they experience it as subtle distrust, but they are running strategies that involve not being conscious of them)

@Malcolm_Ocean And even when it doesn't apply, it still does. If we can't logic our way to an agreement, we must have different priors (or values). It makes me assume that other people's positions are consistent and can be understood, which makes me kinder.

@lolalucxy yeah I'm all for that. and agreed that if you're in more like a scientific context with a shared sense of how to go about measuring things, then you can approach it more like this!

2/ To re-summarize, the market is eating everything in a way that's making it alarmingly more difficult for people to have the social relations they want. It's alarming because social relations used to protect people from the market.

it seems genuinely important to not have algorithms in the critical path of democracy that you can’t explain to 99.9% of voters and this seems like a fuckup

quoting @SenatorBanks: The 2020 Census was a fraud. The Biden admin used a shady “privacy” formula that scrambled the data and miscounted 14 states. It included illegal immigrants and handed Democrats extra seats. Americans deserve a fair count and I’m fighting to fix it. https://t.co/668JGQqNwT

Non-doing or just-sitting meditations are practices for learning. What can you learn from inaction? You learn inaction’s consequences. Your mind has a theory: if I feel this, I must immediately fix/repress/soothe that. And sometimes that’s true, and much more often it’s not.

@eshear yeah I did some solid hours of this at a multi-day meditation retreat a couple weeks ago and at first I thought I hadn't learned anything but then I realized I have a new "dislike something but not get worked up about it" move and I'm like "wow this is great"
