subway stations should totally have mask dispensers. KN95s for $1 each, epic markup, you'd make a bunch of money and make the trains safer. could even pay by tapping your transit card. busy bus stops too, since busses are much less well-ventilated

if, while you're compartmentalized, part of you makes an agreement with someone else (implicit or explicit) then if we see that agreement as having agency, part of that it will use its agency to do is to keep you compartmentalized so you keep the agreement

suppose you're compartmentalized. some parts of you are running the show. and they make an agreement w someone else (implicit/explicit) ↳ that agreement (viewed as having agency) will tend to act to keep you in your current compartments, so that you keep the agreement

Thread · Corporations as black boxes and the incentive to build accountability sinks

taking seriously the idea of corporations as black boxes... the og Stafford Beer idea that they can be organized in such a way as to perform actions that not only do none of their constituent parts (eg people) understand, but none of them even WANT

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@eshear @softmaxresearch @IvanVendrov it's helping me get key intuitions about black boxes, and making me wonder WHY corporations tend to be relatively sociopathic compared to humans, if both are a form of intelligent life. less evolution time? lack of good pain signal? where DO you put the accountability?

3 likes 0 RTs

it's fairly obvious that it doesn't make sense to try to hold a person's cells or organs responsible for what they do as a whole person… but also in the extreme of death the cells kind of DO reap these consequences whether via malnutrition or revenge or state-sanctioned violence

0 likes 0 RTs

the fact that key parts of corporations have nearly unbounded upside from their corporation succeeding (profit, founders getting rich) but very bounded downside not only to failure but unethical behavior… means that there's an incentive to set up accountability sinks

0 likes 0 RTs

(I think? Need to think this through more. It's obviously a source of much innovation that individuals can get rich, and we do also obviously want to limit liability at least somewhat. So maybe part of the issue is just incentivizing the outer structure)

2 likes 0 RTs

Meanwhile it seems absolutely plausible to me that with enough cybernetics insight, a country could actually come up with laws that would ban the most egregious forms of social organization that cause accountability sinks and other pathological corporate behavior.

3 likes 0 RTs

Obviously lots of issues to this, from deception (same structures exist but are now illegible) and general draconianism or limits on innovation and play. Clearly we DON'T want to just have all corps have exactly the same structures

0 likes 0 RTs

@dsquareddigest proposes in The Unaccountability Machine a first step for stopping the leveraged buyout approach: an entity buying out a living company would have to guarantee the latter's debts. it still allows limited liability where it helps, but not this hack

found an essay comparing LLMs to mentalists/psychics, who seem to be able to read your mind. it's from 2023, & underappreciates some of the real applications to come (eg actually solving coding problems) but is a good lens on ways in which we can be fooled. link below

@Malcolm_Ocean It’s world-model alignment all the way down and this necessarily entails lossy heuristics.

@mykola say more about the second half? doesn't make sense to me (too vague)

@Malcolm_Ocean My immediate phenomenological experience is embedded within my worldmodel, in a sense. Some specific claim someone makes may or may not immediately resonate within my immediate phenomenological experience -- but I can often tell, in a sort of lossy way, whether or not this claim

@mykola mmmm, right. @meditationstuff has some writing on how surprisingly unlossy human neural worldmodeling is. kind of like how PNGs can do lossless compression but even so, in what sense can the whole thing be beheld at once, for updating? holographically?

for a visceral example of me working through how two people in a heated convo might go through these steps, check out this thread:

"My wife refuses to get rid of old sex videos she made with her ex" redditors are like "who is wrong in this situation, me for wanting this or her for wanting that" — wrong question. you each want what you want. what do you want together? comments are closed so here's a thread

@DefenderOfBasic and it seems to both of us that there's an inherent nature to this—these steps aren't arbitrary. it's not a coincidence we landed on the same basic approach

@Malcolm_Ocean reducing temperature and pressure in self so that we can hear another person out (and hence reduce their temp/pressure) ... I found it helps to separate those things. I can hear you & pay the viewpoint some respect, acceptance isn't agreement. "I hear you" is just and only that

@forthrighter it can go further than "I hear you" or even being able to parrot/reflect back what the other person said you can get to a point where you can say "I can see how that makes sense". you can make the sense they're making of it, without denying your view

core thesis prompt, for reference:

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

LLM prompt I use many times a week: write a 1-paragraph summary of the core thesis of this writing, not as "this essay presents" / no reference to the author or the piece being summarized or "the thesis". just walking through the idea/logic in such a way that a very smart person reading it would immediately see the implications (which can also be spelled out, to be clear! ...but don't refer to "the implications" either)

this is cool "there's an ad hoc generated interface for that"

Dominik Lukes @techczech ·

Ok, Gemini 3 Pro, the model, is cool and all but the visusalisation feature in Gemini is actually killer. The future of interacting with LLMs is not chat but custom interfaces. Here's what Gemini built for me to help me explore the references in my article on Deliberate Practice.

I bet there's some way you could trade a transformer on baby babble in such a way that it would let you learn what your baby is saying a few months earlier than you could have decoded it yourself

Replying to quite quiet @babarganesh ·

@Malcolm_Ocean the important task though is for the baby to learn to speak to humans which means that humans or a good proxy should be giving rewards to the baby

@babarganesh absolutely! I'm positing that the learning gradient could maybe be improved by getting an earlier sense of win for the babies. not to remove the gradient

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

huh. if parents were 100% perfect at inferring kids' needs, the kids would never learn how to intentionally communicate like there'd be no gradient there

my tweet was inspired partly by my own 15mo and partly by a neighbor who commented that when she looks back at vids of her kids from that age she can understand way more babble in retrospect than she could at the time it's already proto-English!

earlyspark @earlyspark ·

@Malcolm_Ocean i wonder what language it would speak. no, it wouldn't have that kind of language at all, would it? but would need to be translated into one we could understand. like that episode in the Simpsons

@Malcolm_Ocean Maybe something that takes a vibey essay as input, goes through it step by step and finds scholarship, stats, and quotes to support it, and integrates those? Confirmation bias as a service. (I really wish such an app could work without turning into that).

@everytstudies oh man I don't want external stats to confirm my ideas—that's a terrible idea for the reason you describe I just want detailed specific examples and more evocative quotes on the topic from my own notes/recorded convos

Image generation was better when it was worse. Could the prompt "receiving true death and forgetting the world" generate such an image today? No. This was, in Baudrillardean terms, seductive (leading astray), whereas current generation is merely productive (bringing forth).
