Does anyone have any theory as to what the six flavors of quark “mean”? I realize they have no obvious classical correlate, but like even directionally they just seem so arbitrary.

@eshear I don't have an answer, but I love the question! eg like, do up&down have more direct-oppositiness than charm/strange? what can be said about how the pairs have different relationships? can we make sense of them in terms of 3 different types of romance?

@mbateman I had a job making widgets once and I had spare attention while assembling the pieces, which I had to count, so I decided to play around with counting in different bases tried 2,3,4,5,6,12,16, & had special words to ensure each sound meant exactly one quantity (eg 10₂ = "two")

i keep hearing from men that male sexuality is pathologized and demonized, but i've never had that experience is this a christian thing? american thing? can men from other (especially not-very-religious) countries weigh in?

I recently talked to someone who said that the fact that men have to pretend not to be attracted to 16 year olds otherwise get labelled as a sexual deviant results in absurd repression (puberty ends ~15-17! this is separate from whether it's socially/ethically wise to act on such, for reasons aside from arbitrary age cut-off dates) (to be clear, I'm not saying I agree per se here or that I have any particular proposals, nor do I know what his proposals were, but I do think laws around this are probably a bit crude and this makes society stupider than it needs to be and worse at dealing with various kinds of threats)

people get conflicted about this, but i think the straightforward thing to note is that Umberto was himself a prolific author who wrote ~30 books and a newspaper column for ~30 years. it doesn't seem THAT unreasonable to have 800+ books for each book you write + 800+/yr of column

quoting @Pergament_F: Umberto Eco, who owned 50,000 books, had this to say about home libraries: "It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use

@visakanv yeah keeping books around feels like trailheads to potential conversations. changes the space to know that these ideas are within reach in a physical way sure I could "look it up" but it's a different affordance.

quoting @eshear: Advanced Memetic Warfare 207: Encircling When you notice a proliferation of other smaller factions which, despite having little in common with each other, but still oppose your memetic framework, see if you can group a bunch of them by aesthetic vibe and name the cluster.

@eshear what about times when it's creating an allegiance within that group? same phenom or a cousin? eg unifying catholics & protestants in the 80s to create a religious voting bloc eg the invention of hispanic identity eg the invention of "whiteness"

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@sparr0 imo that's a totally reasonable way to create a copy of a small plain javascript object it's a bit slower than other methods but depending on object size it can still be 100k+ ops/sec, so if you're only every few minutes then it's hardly a problem

@tyromper resonates with the "don't give kids extra problems" approach. the kid is making a problem for others... instead of accommodating that infinitely, conveying the problem back to him (in a direct non-escalatory way) lets him see the natural consequences

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

don't give kids extra problems either: 😑 they already see a problem; empathize &/ help solve it (now or in future) 🙈 they don't see their problem; point it out 🤔 they don't have a problem, you do—tell them something isn't working FOR YOU & seek a win-win 🤷‍♀️ no problem twitter.com/darcyjae/statu…

@tyromper I like the specificity of how you responded here. I think a lot of people might have assumed that your "you won't get sympathy" would have meant a harsher response here but it's almost like, you'll get empathy and warmth but no pity or coddling or whatever

I like this and its details. my parents tried to give me "natural consequences" but they mostly just were punishments but named "consequences" (and maybe slightly more relevant than other parents') but here there's something about how the basic physical reality shines through
