I would have given lightning to the airbenders, not the firebenders. It seems appropriate both physically and symbolically in the sense that lightning kind of comes out of nowhere and from a difference in electrical potential (like how wind comes from a diff in air pressure).

This, of course, would also have balanced out the combat between the bending arts, and might have prevented the Fire Nation from just obliterating the Air Nomads so easily at the start of the hundred year war. 🤔

Part of me kinda vaguely feels like the reason that the color wheel seems to wrap around, with violet comfortably next to red, has something to do with how the wavelength of red is almost double that of violet. Kinda like how 440Hz & 880Hz are both "A", in music.

@Malcolm_Ocean Harmonics work in hearing because there's a single membrane in the cochlea that vibrates in response to all sounds. For light, we have different photoreceptors for different wavelengths of light, so I don't think harmonics apply Sorry if I'm harshing your vibe :-p

@Malcolm_Ocean In other words, they're not sensitive to frequency. The brain is just comparing relative intensities of three buckets of light.

@complexulous Yeah great point. And tetrachromats would have a completely different perception of things. Moreover, a species could in principle distinguish pure yellow light from green+red light, and have a hue-space not adequately summarized by a triangle. They'd find RGB screens unnatural.

0 likes 0 RTs

@complexulous Such a species would be able to perceive, directly, the unnaturalness of pink{=red+violet}, ie how it's unlike narrow-spectrum light of any particular wavelength. It would *feel like* the two ends combined.

It’s more of a derivative, 2nd-order sense than a direct sense. I don’t typically think to ponder “am I worthy of kindness?” - rather, I have a lot of experience of people being unkind to me, and that has informed my worldview accordingly I *also* have experienced great kindness

@visakanv I mostly understand "deserve" to be very broken as a concept. That may not be that helpful to this small part, but seems worth pointing out as a thing to orient to.

Suppose you found out that the rest of your life will be equally good (according to whatever your personal definition of "good" is) as it is now, getting neither better nor worse. Would this feel good because your life won't get worse, or bad because life's not good enough yet?

@xuenay All 3, in some sense. I know almost nobody with whom I'd be even slightly tempted to trade lives with. I have a sense of huge as-yet-unrealized potential in my life. I'm concerned about global disaster so assuming the guarantee isn't "relative to others", that'd be relieving.

What's the "holy grail" in your industry? ie a description of a problem that many have tried to solve (or claimed to solve) but everyone knows nobody has, and if someone *actually* did it would be a total gamechanger. (interpret "industry" however you want, above)

Speculating (based on very little detail so far) that the buddhist "two truths doctrine" might be related to reality as experienced by the two brain hemispheres. LH: "provisional" (saṁvṛti) truth RH: "ultimate" (paramārtha) truth

I would furthermore posit that much theorizing that has been attempted about the topic would thus be confused, because it would be the LH trying to understand both.

Yo @Heroku / @HerokuStatus I just shipped new code and I'm getting an H20 "App boot timeout" and when I rollback to a release from 4 days ago that was working fine *I'm still getting H20 timeout!* Can't figure out how to get complice.co back up.

I think to some extent Bruce Tift's book Already Free might be a decent pragmatic unification of the two neurological models I looked at last year: McGilchrist's brain hemisphere model ↔ Fruitional View Unlocking the Emotional Brain's coherence framework ↔ Developmental View

People often say some thing can only "learnt by doing it”. What could the explanation for that possibly be?

@MatjazLeonardis Much of learning (skills, traits, &+) is not storing facts nor explanations, but reorganizing ones' perceptual and motor systems to be able to effectively respond to situations. That reorganization requires encountering how the situation relates to your existing organization.

@MatjazLeonardis Even learning that seems like it's on the level of "explanation" is often reorganization, because many explanations happen before consciousness. "Observations are theory-laden" & theories include emotional stuff: "world is safe", "crying is not ok", etc

@Malcolm_Ocean Tides is something I've been meaning to look into How can the moon be so far away and be pulling such a huge amount of water this way and that? Something doesn't add up

@moshwey Haha I mean it's rly big, and water is rly sloshy. But yeah it's also rly far. Beyond the above, I don't have an intuition for why the moon should do that from how far it is.

1 like 0 RTs

@moshwey Oh! I think it's got something to do with… Surface-of-earth-scale heights are actually tiny on a planetary scale. Earth is super smooth! If it were the size of a billiard-ball, it would be smoother than said ball! So what seems like a "big" tide is 0.0001% of earth diameter

6 likes 0 RTs

@moshwey Not crazy to think that the moon's gravity might be enough to cause the earth to bulge by a millionth - barely perceptible, unless you're a tiny creature standing on it.

1 like 0 RTs

TIL that in addition to the moon's gravity creating the tides by pulling water up about 1m (=~3ft) it ALSO stretches the solid Earth by 30cm=1ft Which means "water is sloshy" is… only part of an explanation for how gravity's so strong at such a distance:

That doesn't, intuitively, to me, explain why high tide is twice a day though, moon-side and far-side. Something I've been looking at in this quest today said something about inertia for that though. Hmm…

@Malcolm_Ocean Hmm I watched the video and it sounds like it makes sense. But why does the centrifugal force only act on the water on the other side of the moon? Surely on the moon side you would get centrifugal force AND the pull of the moon so that tide would be higher than the other...

[long tweet — read the rest on Twitter]

@moshwey Hot take (which is sort of what one of my sources said) is that the moon can't actually pull water *up* for shit (ie away from earth's gravity) but the sideways pull on the water that's sitting neither towards nor away from the moon, causes it to go sideways, which… I still dk.

0 likes 0 RTs

@moshwey Oh right, centrifugal. Okay, so simultaneously the oceans want to bulge on the whole equator because centrifugal, and ALSO the moon's orthogonal-to-earth's-gravity-gravity on the two sides tangent to the whatever, flattens those sides. Somehow.

@josephflaherty @mseebach I think you might both be right. Maybe there are ~100,000 such people, within which there are multiple groups of ~10,000 where if all 10k were lost, it would bring everything to a halt. Critical number is lower than number of people who are critical.

@cameronconcarne @QiaochuYuan Ironically, "pathological" functions are much (much, much) more common than "well-behaved" functions

@necoleman @cameronconcarne @QiaochuYuan This is true of most ways abstractions get taught: ignoring the majority of cases. In my years of engineering degree, all of my mechanics courses *except* Mechanics Of Deformable Solids assumed that all objects we were modeling would never bend or deform.

2 likes 0 RTs

@necoleman @cameronconcarne @QiaochuYuan Similarly, all of my courses in mechanics and in electrical systems basically assumed linear performance. Of course, almost no real systems are actually linear except "approximately, within certain ranges". Keep doubling voltage or pressure and something explodes or breaks.

Thread · Rethinking 'any mistakes are my own' acknowledgements

I really don't like when authors say "any wisdom herein is from [my teachers], any mistakes are my own". I think I see what it's trying to do and I think we can do better. I'm not totally sure how but I have some ideas. Thread 🧵👇

18 likes 4 RTs

I get that it's intending to honor the wisdom of one's teachers and not make them responsible for ones' mistakes. But I think we can do that 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵: 📉 implying the entire enterprise of knowledge is always lossy 🤦‍♀️ over-humbling oneself 🤩 pedestalizing one's teachers

12 likes 0 RTs

What might that look like? I'm interested in your thoughts. Newton's "if I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants" is one approach I like. Honoring both ones' forerunners stature as well as… ones' own… uhhh… capacity to balance on someone's shoulders.

8 likes 0 RTs

I might write… "I have learned so much from [specific/general teachers]. I could not have even begun to approach this topic without them. I also wouldn't've written this if I didn't think I had something to add. My teachers are not responsible for my errors, nor my wisdom!"

2 likes 0 RTs

That sounds weirdly formal, but so does… "If there is any value to be found in this book, it is entirely due to the inspiration of [teachers]. Any faults are entirely due to our own inadequacies." …which is on the dedication page of a dharma book I'm reading & loving atm.

2 likes 0 RTs

That phrasing seems to be essentially saying "my teachers get all of the credit and none of the blame", which is a beneficent gesture but still instantiates blame as an appropriate kind of explanation. (Blame is, as far as I can tell, incompatible with the dharma.)

3 likes 0 RTs

Reflecting further on my phrasing: > My teachers are not responsible for my errors, nor my wisdom. The perspective of mutual causality (or "dependent co-arising" in buddhist lingo) says that this division is nearly as bizarre as "they get all the credit & none of the blame"

3 likes 0 RTs

My teachers 𝘢𝘳𝘦 partially responsible for my wisdom & errors. This is true in the obvious ways: to a large extent, I learned what they taught, both wise & erroneous.

4 likes 0 RTs

This is also true in non-obvious ways: Some of my errors may come from things my teachers understood so well they took for granted & forgot to explicate. Some of my wisdom may come from my teachers' confusions or blindspots—necessitating my inventing a way to make sense of that!

2 likes 0 RTs

Ha! Okay, a snarky flamboyant take: "My teachers were brilliant & wise, otherwise they would not have have had anything to teach. My teachers were also fools who couldn't see what I now see. I am also a brilliant fool. Your job, dear reader, is to be your own brilliant fool.🙃"

12 likes 0 RTs

Also, in all of this, worth dissolving your concept of whether the role of "teachers" is teaching. Wooten says it best: "I teach nothing because there is nothing to be taught." "But you said that you're my teacher." "'Teacher' is just a title..."

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@QiaochuYuan relatedly, from Victor Wooten's The Music Lesson: (HT @alifeofmovement) "I cannot teach you because no one can teach another person anything." "What do you mean by that?" "You can only teach yourself... I can teach you nothing. I can only *show* you things."

@tasshinfogleman I think it's worth exploring some of what eg @_awbery_ has written about differences between sutric & tantric buddhism. I'd guess that *some* of these misconceptions probably arise from a unclarity of which is being talked about. vajrayananow.com/2020/07/10/sut…

@tasshinfogleman @_awbery_ As far as I understand it (not very far!) monasteries historically have been totally renunciate (and in the case of buddhist monasteries, sutric). MAPLE is clearly doing something different ("semi-renunciate"), but it's not clear to me *how* different or if it's even coherent.

1 like 0 RTs

@tasshinfogleman @_awbery_ And it seems like MAPLE would probably benefit from having good maps of the space outside of renunciate monking. @eka_mark_moon @QiaochuYuan @moshwey Yeah that's what's weird about rotational mechanics, as opposed to uhh ordinary mechanics, or whatnot. Maybe put another way, if something is rotating, it's moving with respect to itself, which is not true with something that is just translating. Still don't quite know why.

@thesravaka Uhh and by "Canada" I guess I mostly mean "the British colonies that would later become Canada" since Canada didn't exist as a thing til 1867 (oh and come to think of it, maybe some of them landed in the USA and then moved north? idk)

If you notice your life sometimes oscillates between 2 or more different stories based on salient facts & feelings, see if you can find a meta-level story that can hold all of it without oscillating. I've found this often helps me & others.

New Complice user: so how do I go about choosing between competing goals/priorities? Me: there's a few ways you can do it, such as <examples>, but also don't forget that sooner or later you're going to die and that some items on your list will never happen, and that's okay.

Thread · Productive and burnt-out modes as one system, not two selves

Replying to @btohtoh

@btohtoh The boring/trivial meta-layer is instead of "I'm sometimes a highly effective nerd and sometimes a burnt out anxious emo slob" "I'm a mysterious creature that operates effectively for a period of time then is dysregulated during my recharge process" point is: one you, not two

15 likes 0 RTs

@btohtoh A maybe more detailed/useful model (may or may not be accurate to your specific case!) might be something like: "My left hemisphere skilled at suppressing certain needs/parts of mine in order to get important things done, but at a certain point they rebel and do random shit"

6 likes 0 RTs

@btohtoh Either example constructs the two modes of you are part of one system, and helping to generate each other, rather than as separate. Even if you don't have a clue how they're connected, you can still hold a basic assumption that they are, because they're parts of a whole you.

@Malcolm_Ocean @btohtoh Although I suppose the first step to integrating the system is first recognizing that it is in fact one system.

@mattgoldenberg @btohtoh Exactly. The new narrative needs to explain why this one system has been operating in two modes historically. It needs to be compatible with the past dataset & present behavioral organization without forcing it to change at all. Though it may create possibility for change.

Great example of meta-integration. Likewise, if you find yourself frequently oscillating between two "incompatible values, see if you can imagine a metaphor where both values are working in harmony.

@mattgoldenberg intertwingle all the things! 👆this needs a direct link to this 👇, methinks

Trinley Goldenberg @mattgoldenberg ·

If you frequently find yourself switching between two modes (e.g Productive and Lethargic), one cause of that can be switching between two values that are in tension. If you can find a way to integrate those values, you no longer need to switch between the modes.

quoting @mattgoldenberg: @lisatomic5 One way I think about this is "what values am I missing in Mode A, that make Mode B necessary?" And then "How can I integrate those values into mode A, such that I feel no need for Mode B?"

I spoke with Mr. Carse on a zoom call Q&A a few weeks back. At the time the fact that he was a real person and you could just talk to him/ask questions was a suprise, and the fact that he's gone now is a loss. I did not know him, but I lit a candle and said a prayer

@dschorno Yeah, I resonate with both experiences, discovering that he was going to be a guest on The Stoa and getting to see him there live, and then discovering that… the era of being able to ask him questions is over. 🕯️🙏

@Conaw Ideally you’d have a Roam graph sort of deal where only the candidates are allowed to write in it. Blocks are color-coded by which candidate wrote it. Some mechanism for proof-of-being-written by the candidates themselves. The American people then have full-read access to it

@TomLisankie @Conaw If you wanna read a fictional account of a group who resolves disagreements like this, check out the novel David's Sling. Fascinating stuff. I vaguely recall recommending it to @Conaw in like 2015 or 2016 when he said he was building software that would support argument-mapping.

George Mack @george__mack ·

How to fix Instagram jealousy: 1. Show how many times the person checked to see who viewed their story. 2. Show how many photos the person took before posting the final shot. Show them how the sausage is made and most kids will lose their envy.

@DRMacIver @fvathynevgl @reasonisfun @m_ashcroft The main ones that come to mind for me are actually books about Perceptual Control Theory. There's something about how they talk about conflict, external and internal, as being an inevitable result of trying to control behavior directly, rather than perception. Illuminating.

I really like the idea of non-coercive motivation, but in practice when I *really* let myself do whatever, I spent a month watching anime, playing a mobile game, and barely getting out of bed, never mind the flat

@fvathynevgl @mattgoldenberg has a pretty loud take about how just turning off coercive motivation doesn't actually give you an alternate system. I also broadly agree with this although our takes are probably different and mine maybe not as extreme as his, idk.

Trinley Goldenberg @mattgoldenberg ·

But like no seriously, POSITIVE MOTIVATION IS A SKILL Mfers, it doesn't just come to you when you get rid of your negative motivation. NO ONE WANTS TO BELIEVE THIS.

Does the water from the sides get pulled to the top/bottom? Also seems like weird coincidence that the two high tides of the day are the same height?

@moshwey @eka_mark_moon @QiaochuYuan I guess… moon stretches the whole situation ~linearly? Technically gravity decreases in strength superlinearly… g = GMm/r² But tiny diff in r means ~linear I guess. 🌕 to near 🌎 = 403,600 km 🌕 to 🌍 core = 410,000 km 🌕 to far 🌏 = 416,300 km So diff in r² almost identical.
