Why "unhealthy for you" doesn't mean "you should feel ashamed"

there's a very prevalent conflation, that drives people into two different kinds of crazy worldview depending on whether they take the modus ponens or the modus tollens horn:  "this is unnatural/unhealthy for you"      ⬇️ means ⬇️  "you should feel ashamed about it"

How people end up with crazy (to you) ontologies: they have some experiences they don't know how to make sense of and a crazy ontology comes along and says "hey look here's how it makes sense" and it is legit kinda helpful (but then obscures other things obvious to you)

classic flavor of stupid resulting worldview tries to shame problems out of existence, without fully realizing that this just tangles them up the problems may pretend to not exist, but hide elsewhere (including from you, which sucks if it's your kid cutting contact)

in reaction to that, this conflation causes people who (correctly) identify that feeling shame is fucking them up, to aggressively insist that the thing is natural or healthy or whatever. a flip to pride your sense of self can just be a mess, that's ok <3

a lot of current discourse says "no, this is natural/the-real-you, you don't have to feel shame about it" so people embrace the identity to stop the shame but imo the issue is we think it's appropriate to shame people *at all*; if we stopped *that*, identities could loosen

to be clear while there are correlations between left/right politics and these two, it's not a perfect match

the discourse: "are you woke, or right-wing?" me: "well, the important thing is that I've found a way to feel superior to both"

obviously conservatism + [this conflation] will result in shaming anything that seems different, as a way to try to maintain the social order

conservativism, properly held, has a very humble tone: "we actually don't quite know why what's working is working, so let's be careful as we change it. it's very precious and our wisdom may not be deep enough"

but many leftists likewise direct shame towards anything they oppose, and this also drives dissent into hiding (but doesn't make it actually stop functioning) & they seem oblivious to the obvious: this makes their movements incapable of steering

Any movement that condemns anyone who says "maybe this is too far" will inevitably go too far. bariweiss.substack.com/p/there-is-no-…

shaming someone (including oneself) is a form of punishment and what do we know about punishment? it can't aim! malcolmocean.com/2022/02/toward…

moreover, shame as a social performance is largely a way to signal that you have accepted someone telling you that you're bad, to get them off your back; it has nothing to do with (well, is antithetical to) deep learning & growth

shame is defensiveness defensiveness is shame shame is not other than defensiveness defensiveness is not other than shame

meanwhile, if something is actually bad for someone, then help them see that, and they'll change naturally*, no shame required but the focus on "bad" is kinda already in the dualistic frame that will tend to encourage shame (*well, also this 👇)

the general problem i have with advice of the form “do this different thing” is that it consistently fails to respect the reasons why people are not already doing the different thing

instead, get curious about why things are as they are (why the person is how they are, and is doing what they're doing) and about how whatever factors you're seeing might also be present in a way that would matter to someone. co-investigate! and

maybe we can figure it out together

and, as always, if you can't get curious enough to listen to them and their experience, get curious about yourself and listen to yourself first!

Three steps for empowered dialogue: 1. see & affirm your own perspective deeply 2. hear the other person & take their perspective to their satisfaction 3. when they feel so heard that they can't help get curious about how you're seeing things, share your own perspective

in conclusion: returning to the original conflation:  "this is unnatural/unhealthy for you"       ⬇️ means ⬇️   "you should feel ashamed about it" this is FALSE. the shame is the 2nd arrow. extra. but that doesn't mean you should feel pride!

don't give kids extra problems either: 😑 they already see a problem; empathize &/ help solve it (now or in future) 🙈 they don't see their problem; point it out 🤔 they don't have a problem, you do—tell them something isn't working FOR YOU & seek a win-win 🤷‍♀️ no problem twitter.com/darcyjae/statu…
