I want to hear about people’s interactions with God Obviously it’s a complex thing and we don’t always know what we’re interacting with, but if you’re inclined to describe it as an interaction with God, I’m curious to hear about it Normal boring interactions not just crazy ones

@michaelcurzi When I was... I think 16, at summer camp, I suddenly got inspired to go talk to god (I don't now recall the context exactly) and went out to a field with a drum and asked about the meaning of life and got back some sort of answer in the form of a short song.

@AskYatharth I didn't make any comments on *how* to do the thing. I maintain that forcing is the wrong approach. Better to explore the implicit conflict preventing effortless resolution of the thing and resolve that first.

@m_ashcroft @AskYatharth ...I think the paradox is in the word "just". If you can find a way to "just" do the thing, then "just" do the thing. Inasmuch as the resistance is to taking-in-not-having-done-it, it may not actually be in the way! But don't assume you can always "just":

@aaronzlewis What if, as a conversation like Twitter forks, one could “scroll” in different directions to follow other threads of conversation? Feeling like your text blog format, but adding dimensionality? It’s a riff on this chain of reasoning: x.com/hunterbergsma/…

quoting @HunterBergsma: Multidimensional scrolling X = Timeline Y = Home (predictive) Z = Type/Topical • current news • object level • meta level • history • predictive • inquisitive A = Media (images/video) B = file shares C = web link shares etc. Choose 3, or more?

@HunterBergsma @aaronzlewis Relatedly I saw a tweet (I think recent, but can't seem to find it) about a spectrum of    public ↔ private broadcast ↔ direct  content ↔ convo and organizes like classic news → facebook/twitter → chat/DMs it distinguished fb & tw, but I forget how and it's important 😕

1 like 0 RTs

Also! Do you think that the percentage of deaths by suicide, globally, between 1997 and 2017, went up or down?

1 like 0 RTs

Soooooooooooooooooooo turns out it's 1.4%. It felt fair to round that to 1.5% given that probably suicides are substantially underreported in some countries. Probably more people would have guessed that if I hadn't made it the highest option; biasing is a thing.

3 likes 0 RTs

I was surprised by this! Would probably have guessed 0.5%. Based on the first couple dozen poll results, seems like many of you were also surprised, though I guess fewer than I'd thought.

3 likes 0 RTs

It's weird that suicide has as much stigma as it does, given that probably at least 3% of people have made a suicide attempt. Tho not surprising, given challenges of talking about it. (Hard to find stats on this; <8% of attempts are successful, but many repeats are same-person)

As @catherineols aptly put it, GPT-3 is like an improv player, who picks up the scene and is able to play along. And you can even play that improv game "shoulda said" where you rewind and the player generates a different response and the scene moves forward with that!

Raphaël Millière @raphaelmilliere ·

I asked GPT-3 to write a response to the philosophical essays written about it by @DrZimmermann, @rinireg @ShannonVallor, @add_hawk, @AmandaAskell, @dioscuri, David Chalmers, Carlos Montemayor, and Justin Khoo published yesterday by @DailyNousEditor. It's quite remarkable!

@JeanClaudeFox2 What's important is that when we say "chair", we're communicating *enough* for our purposes, and if it turns out that an important thing hinges on "is this a chair", we should just jettison the word "chair" and figure out what facts are actually relevant in this context.

@ChanaMessinger @JeanClaudeFox2 further on chairs:

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@Meaningness @StephenPiment I mean, Korzybski would claim that saying "this is a chair" is a M-T error, because "is" is busted. And people DO get in (usually useless) debates about whether some particular X "is" a Y. They wouldn't do this if they weren't making this M-T error.

Hey kind of handles Correspondence with "Reply Later" and kind of handles TODOs with "Set Aside" But utterly fails at listservs because it filters just by sender and it matters who the receiver is too. & I think Paper Trail would end up eating some FYI & TODO items

I've written some pretty cool songs (lyrics+melody) that kinda want to be electronic songs? I don't have the tools/skills to produce them. Could learn, but instead... who wants to collaborate? I sing & give high-level creative direction, you make it a real track.

By "high-level creative direction" I mean things like 🎷 "I feel like this part wants a sax solo" 🥁 "Here's a beatboxed rough take of a drop after the first verse, can you make it with actual electronic drums?" ✨ "What if we did stutter edit here, like [demo]?"

I'm open to a wide range of how involved I would be, depending how many degrees of freedom you want. In some cases I've figured out chords, harmonies etc. In one case I recorded a whole multitrack demo with acapella & guitar & beatbox, but the audio quality is shit.

I did actually make an album, mostly-self-produced, at a studio in 2012, so I broadly know the deal with production, I just can't do it to a level I'm satisfied with, and I think now's not the time for me to take on a whole learning arc around that. maleidoscope.bandcamp.com

@Malcolm_Ocean Say there’s a delay in perception. Slow down the inflow so you don't overshoot/oscillate. Say there’s a delay in execution. Likewise. @Malcolm_Ocean Do you have an example where addressing a delay in perception/execution involves speeding the system change up?

@AskYatharth Hmm... I'm first wanting to note that sometimes the answer is to reduce those delays in perception or execution. eg I switched from getting complice-is-down alerts via email to getting them via slack, for faster notification.

0 likes 0 RTs

Replying to yatharth ༺༒༻ @AskYatharth ·

@Malcolm_Ocean System change = amount/temp of water in bathtub. Delay in execution = after you turn knob, takes while for flow to change. Delay in perception = you can only tell how much water there was 5 minutes ago.

@AskYatharth > Delay in execution = after you turn knob, takes while for flow to change. Re bathtub, it's more like: - after you turn knob, takes awhile for bathtub to *fill* - after you turn knob, takes awhile for water to become hot (which is sort of isomorphic)

0 likes 0 RTs

@AskYatharth I sorta feel there's something we're not understanding together here… not sure what it is. But if you look up PID controller you can see examples of physical control systems and how adding faster derivative feedback can compensate for delays. Intro/math:youtube.com/watch?v=UR0hOm…

@AskYatharth And here's a demo. When he starts saying "subscribe" around minute 2, jump to minute 7. You don't need the stuff about 3D printing in the middle. You can see how slowing down (Kp) doesn't solve it. Need to add velocity-based (Kd) feedback loop. youtube.com/watch?v=JFTJ2S…

@Malcolm_Ocean But in your usage, delay in execution and rate of system change both refer to the same thing: rate of change in stock. Which also makes sense. You could speed the rate of system change (make bathtub fill faster) to reduce delay in execution (how long the tub takes to fill).

@AskYatharth Yeah I think this is probably somewhat arbitrary, based on where you draw the boundary between "you" and "the system", who are ofc not fundamentally separate. But yeah, "time to fill" is rate of syschange. Execution delay more like if you had to cross room to turn faucet

1 like 0 RTs

@AskYatharth So like, you might see from across the room "ahh crap the water is about to overflow" but by the time you get there it has filled up more. That's the delay in execution.

By *slowing down* her response delay to better match the tempo of the delivery delay, the owner is able to reduce the oscillations instead of increase them. Dampens cycle of overreaction to gap (in both directions: ordering too many then ordering too few)

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Leverage Point 9: lengths of delays Delay can be in perception or execution Often issue is too much delay (overshooting oscillations, eg shower temp🥶🥵🚿) but too little = overreaction (eg 👻➡️😱) Delays are RELATIVE to rate of system change—often easier to modify the latter

For substantial elaboration & clarification on this, check out these tweets:

Just found a great case study in Thinking in Systems, of a situation where *increasing* a kind of delay can reduce system oscillation, clearing up a confusion @AskYatharth and I had had last week. The pages in this tweet have the context; next tweet has the solution. twitter.com/Malcolm_Ocean/…

@rothosphere Something something emotional schemas that predict helplessness, and in their fear of that helplessness act to generate experiences of helplessness. The original tweet sounds profound in part because of equivocation/ambiguity in the word "you".

@Malcolm_Ocean Something nuanced here is the line “The car dealer isn’t stupid.” This could be interpreted as either:

@AskYatharth Agreed there's nuance. I think this is intended to basically mean what it literally says. Someone with plenty of intelligence (IQ?) & domain expertise, but no grasp of system dynamics & feedback loops will often exhibit behavior that has results that are clearly suboptimal.

@Malcolm_Ocean Which is it? With the shower example, clearly the agent could do better, not scald/freeze themselves. With the inventory system, well, 🤷‍♀️ who knows. Maybe the oscillations *are* the right thing to do given future customer demand is unknown and might be fluctuating.

@AskYatharth The simple PID controller I described in another tweet, if well-tuned, could also avoid oscillations here... if you can't tell that customer demand has just bumped up but otherwise is unchanging, you're not measuring important variables. (the derivative, specifically (D in PID))

I know the difference between "its" and "it's", and I just found a typo in some rough journal notes today. Finding myself asking if there's any value to differentiating those (doesn't seem to reduce any ambiguity) besides signalling educatedness/polishedness.

15 likes 0 RTs

Like, for what ought I care about "it's/its" in my notes? When in the future of English might either of those become an "acceptable" spelling for the other usage? Why not now?

4 likes 0 RTs

Linguistic prescriptivism is almost always a helpless cause, but I think it's further worth distinguishing between cases where it's taking a stand for a meaningful difference, vs "it's/its". An example of meaningful difference: drift of "literally" into intensifier like "very"

2 likes 0 RTs

(Although as I understand it, "really" and "very" both themselves in some sense used to have non-intensifier meanings, and went through a similar process as "literally" is now. We will, I suppose, find a new word to mean "literally", literally. Necessity & invention & all that.)

@lisatomic5 The problem is that this is another of those things where the official answer and the unofficial answer that everyone actually does differ. I'd guess most people aren't working anywhere near 9-5 and a lot of those hours are spent browsing reddit or twitter or something.

@DRMacIver @lisatomic5 there are stats on this and last I checked (7 years ago) most knowledge workers spend 2-4h/day doing *actually vital work*, with maybe another couple hours doing work-related stuff like reading through emails, that may or may not cause anything meaningful, even indirectly

@lisatomic5 I say yes. Even if it's not stated, or even if it's explicitly denied because shorter hours for some people would do weird things to morale, that's part of the point of a salary (vs an hourly wage)—that you're not having to stress about clocking in & clocking out.

Thread · Victor Wooten's "You are here" game for finding the key by ear

Victor Wooten 🎶 game: "You are here." Difficulty: moderate (maybe advanced?) Put on a song. Strike a note on your instrument. (You can move one semi-tone up or down if it feels totally "wrong".) Then keep hitting only that note and try to feel where you are in the scale.

Visakan Veerasamy @visakanv ·

"When there's a note that doesn't work, there's a note on either side of the note that DOES work." NOBODY TELLS YOU THIS. "It's always easy! but we make it hard!". "A minute ago this note didn't work, but now it does. I can *erase* the wrong note by *making music*." Amazing

I've been kind of doing this implicitly for awhile. Just had another experience of striking the non-dominant 7th note in a minor key song (as in the QT below), this time a G in the Am key of Linkin Park's Burning in the Skies

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Just now, listening to Inner Peace by @ClozeeOfficial, from her 2016 Shambhala set, and I'm like fuckyeah and just whack a C. Hmmm yeah, wants to jam up to the D, and that feels like home. So I noodle on down the D minor scale. But this isn't theory: it's Dm, not "Dm"

2 likes 0 RTs

While writing the previous tweet, I tried out an E in When They Come For Me (I've got Linkin Park's Ten Thousand Suns album on 🥰) and it was weird, so I dropped down a semitone to Eb, and just kept playing it and I was like "mmm yeah this wants to go down to D then C" - Cm! ✔️

Lest you think I've got perfect pitch, I had some trouble with Robot Boy just now, though I just looked up the chords and it's kind of fucky, with both Bb (Bb chord) and B (G chord) in it. No wonder my initial F# then G felt weirdly natural but also foreign.

tried out a C in Waiting for the End... nope. B... yeaaaaah B feels pretty chill, pretty stable, can just hang out here and hit this B a lot and it works with whatever's underneath... but it's not home. Home is... E. Yup! Song is in E.

Anyway, this skill took me a lot of noodling around on a keyboard over the last year to develop, and this after years of other instrumental explorations, piano & guitar and otherwise.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

1yr after having a 🎹 keyboard next to my desk listening to the first few chapters of Victor Wooten's Music Lesson, I've developed a WAY closer relationship with musical scales. I confidently hit a note, & can often just FEEL where in the scale it fits. twitter.com/visakanv/statu…

But internalizing the bit from Victor Wooten made a huge difference! There's no wrong notes, just… notes that take a bit more ummm explaining to do if someone walks in on you.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

But I wasn't thinking about a "note" in a "scale", I just knew that that Bb sounded dirty as fuck. It was so raunchy I felt like I was violating a sexual taboo. It felt like I was getting away with a crime. It was so right, and so wrong. Fucking amazing 👅

6 likes 0 RTs

I have no idea if this skill is accessible to other musicians at whatever skill level or just a weird quirk I've developed over the last year. Based on some of the recent videos I've watched that analyze jazz, my sense is that jazz would train this 10× as much as most genres.

4 likes 0 RTs

The beginner version of this game ofc is just "put on a song, and hit notes on your instrument until you know what key you're in." This is also a lot of fun and is improved by a wootenesque philosophy that says there are no wrong notes.

@mattgoldenberg @xuenay @visakanv > Creative tension is also needed, and it's definitely not a default way of interacting. Creative tension would seem, based on a PCT model, to be utterly structural to how the brain works. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you? I think CT isn't default because we learn oscillating T.

@AbstractFairy @bigmastertroll @Malcolm_Ocean has a lot of interesting material around blame, which will have some interesting relationship to forgiveness

@meditationstuff @AbstractFairy @bigmastertroll Not-not-forgiveness is vital. Forgiveness is a patch on having a blame-based paradigm in the 1st place. Blame-based ways of understanding are confused like geocentrism is confused.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Forgiveness is sort of a backwards concept, like phlogiston (which ~= "the absence of oxygen"). Forgiveness ~= "the absence of resentment". So if you don't resent in the first place, then you can reach a state of "forgiveness" without actually performing an act of "forgiving".

@meditationstuff @AbstractFairy @bigmastertroll "Punishing bad actors" is pretty confused. Sociopaths don't respond to punishment, basically at all. Inasmuch as non-sociopaths are fucking shit up, they need their trauma untangled, not to be tangled more by more punishment.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@Timber_22 @QiaochuYuan @jim_rutt This article suggests that a substantial number of sociopaths (80%?) might also be well-modelled as operating based on trauma, and that this is somewhat treatable—just not with punishment or repression (which have been the usual approaches for decades). theatlantic.com/magazine/archi…

@meditationstuff @AbstractFairy @bigmastertroll Turns out most people, broadly speaking, care about other people and want to do nice things for others and the world, and if they're not doing so it's because they're scared or confused. The idea that that's not so is self-reinforcing dualistic propaganda.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@patrissimo @OperationMoksha @QiaochuYuan I have some sense that this concern is structurally similar to the classic Christian propaganda "if people weren't afraid of hell, they'd murder and steal and stuff" 😱 ...turns out that there are lots of atheists who are totally prosocial, because they care about other ppl 🤷‍♀️💞

McGilchrist resonates: > "It’s a fool who says anything positive about the nature of God, but I’m not convinced that God is omniscient and omnipotent, either. I think God is in the process, is becoming. God is not only just becoming, but IS becoming, you see what I mean."

@Malcolm_Ocean @xuenay @visakanv From this frame, oscillating tension is an inevitable result of a control system that doesn't learn to look ahead (Ie, the default state of our brains)

@mattgoldenberg @xuenay @visakanv Hmm seems to me that non-human animals, maybe relatively simple ones but at least crows, obviously have control systems that look ahead at least somewhat. Human non-look-ahead seems to be due to trauma-trained overwhelming sense of present not-okayness.

@micahtredding @Malcolm_Ocean I’m curious what your take is on this definition of shame and fear. (Nice explanation above, but basically: it’s the gap between what is possible, and where we’re at now.)

@reasonisfun @micahtredding "shame" and "fear", to me, point at something much much more specific than such a gap. shame is one way of relating to such a gap, and is part of the coercive anti-rational memeplex. could try to rehabilitate the word "shame" to mean something else, but it's not a natural move

1 like 0 RTs

@reasonisfun @micahtredding for instance, I would say "shame is secretly a defense—it makes something about me which is not about me, and reifies a problem. this is true whether I'm ashamed of hurting you, or whether I'm ashamed of my art"

0 likes 0 RTs

@reasonisfun @micahtredding in both cases, it's a distraction: from the hurt I've caused, or from the art itself shame, as an emotion, is trying to say "I submit, don't hurt me." social fear works similarly it blocks actual learning

1 like 0 RTs

@reasonisfun @micahtredding fear is a natural emotion and not intrinsically part of the coercive way of organizing human beings, although it is profoundly overused as part of coercive societies, and is awful for steering things because it mostly just says "avoid this" try giving someone directions that way

I'll note that there are 2 elements to this. One is learning not to fear feeling whatever you're feeling. Bruce Tift speaks brilliantly to this, in eg this excerpt: (a substantial chunk of the dharma seems to be learning how to not need feelings go away)

The other element, which is probably in some sense more what @emmalsalinas is referring to, is untangling whatever has your current system organized to produce panicked responses in relation to certain situations.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@jonnym1ller With that in mind, I'll point you at this summary of Unlocking the Emotional Brain, along with their table of wtf sorts of things turn out to be under the overt "symptoms". Summary 👉 lesswrong.com/posts/i9xyZBS3… 🔥 (Read table bottom to top)

Inasmuch as each emotion has a *purpose*, and panic (unlike straight up fear→run) seems to mostly make us helplessly freak out, it seems to me that panic's purpose is probably purely infantile: get comforted by parents, including found if lost.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@QiaochuYuan @visakanv My latest frame for this: everyone is basically living in a dream mashup of their current external situation and their old emotional meanings. Like dreaming you're at school but it's also on a boat somehow. & as in dreams, somehow the weirdness of this mashup goes unnoticed

4 likes 0 RTs

If you're feeling panic, and you're an adult, ask yourself if you feel small. Your system may be having an emotional flashback to a time when you were very young.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@QiaochuYuan @visakanv Pete Walker has a great article about this phenomenon: > Because most emotional flashbacks do not have a visual or memory component to them, the triggered individual rarely realizes that she is re-experiencing a traumatic time from childhood. pete-walker.com/flashbackManag…

1 like 0 RTs

If you're reading this and think you don't have childhood trauma, well... I don't know you! I do know that 4 years ago I didn't think I did and that is clearly false, and I also know that our society is built up to systematically traumatize people.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

@QiaochuYuan @visakanv Note that while he's talking about Complex PTSD, schools are prisons so basically everybody is actually traumatized quite a lot. In some dimensions this has gotten better; in others, worse: x.com/PeterNickeas/s…

6 likes 0 RTs

Important caveat: having childhood experiences that got stuck in tangles and now generate adult flashbacks does NOT mean anyone did something wrong. It just means you faced situations that you didn't know how to metabolize at the time.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

I once did an emotional processing session starting w: "I feel weird/bad trying to get out of bed" I found my way to expressing a hazy memory: "Nobody woke me up and I missed the pancakes!" ...then I suddenly started sobbing 😭 Traumatic meaning can occur in benign situations.

I came up with a dank (but possibly wrong) analogy for non-conceptual (non-dual) awareness. A thread: 1/5

@peak_valley_pea Huh. I did this to myself once with my visual field just based on reading a book about Perceptual Control Theory and then trying to suppress the layer of my brain's processing system that reifies objects. Was like the no-dog. Each object exquisitely beautiful for moments after.

7 likes 0 RTs

@peak_valley_pea My meditator friend (Romeo Stevens) commented that this was very impressive that I could do this but it seemed to me like a pretty straightforward move based on reading this cybernetic neuroscience book. Haven't tried conveying the move to people yet tho. Would be fun to do so.

2 likes 0 RTs

@peak_valley_pea Note that objects and concepts are not the same. I did this with objects—very low level. Just saw splotches of color and light and shape, no things. Vs objects without concepts, you still know what's foreground vs background, even if you have no idea the name/use of the thing.

@madden_barrett @Malcolm_Ocean @paulg I'm not even sure this was human error on the part of the designers. Seems like primarily training issues. The operators did not know how the system worked. That doesn't necessarily mean the system should have worked differently.

@DaveProbably @madden_barrett @paulg On the gripping hand, I would say that any need-for-training that *can* be obviated with design though should be, and modal design is known to cause issues if people can't easily tell what mode they're in (and don't have any obvious cue to tell them they would need to check)

3 likes 0 RTs

@EndersenL @jaltma @paulg If you're in tech support in such a way that you don't have any leverage for redesigning the systems to be less confusing to the users, this does actually seem like a useful classification. Though "problem in training" might still be more fruitful & less contemptuous.

@Malcolm_Ocean @FlowGenome I remember reading that too, incredible book. Lowering heart-rate is pretty straight-forward (long + slow exhales), but increasing HRV in the long run (our capacity to shift from high tone sympathetic >> parasympathetic state) is the holy grail.

@jonnym1ller @FlowGenome Totally, re HRV. And that feels related to what I'm saying. I don't want to learn "a technique for lowering heartrate". @micahtredding Yeah, the challenge is to experience the finitude of time without an accompanying sense of scarcity. The problem that many people run into is *deferred* scarcity where they take out a loan to feel abundance now, promising they'll pay it back later, then realize it's too late.

@eriktorenberg I remember thinking while I was at @UWaterloo doing CO-OP was that one of the main things I was paying for was license to work at 6 different companies in 5 years without it looking sketchy. Ended up starting my own ofc anyway, because I didn't want to actually work for anyone.

@eriktorenberg @UWaterloo This is making me think that something super valuable a network of companies (*cough* 🤭 @beondeck 🤭 *cough*) could offer is a legible cross-company internship arc where you get to try working at a few different places in different roles as part of one bigger thing.

@eriktorenberg @UWaterloo @beondeck I've been cultivating a vision for awhile of a network of companies that are all operating on a compatible version of a GameB human operating system, and thereby able to have resources & people flow remarkably smoothly between them, smoother than *within* one ordinary GameA org.

That thing about introverts, where they are defined by being tired from being at social gatherings. What if they haven't fully individuated & are still monitoring everybody for cues on how to act and be in each social situation or different person. Exhausting! Poll below.

@DougTataryn Not sure how exactly it relates but I have had a few friends report their experiences of taking bromantane, an unusual anti-depressant & anxiolytic, as something like "I had no social anxiety because I didn't care what other people thought. My friends/partner didn't like this."

@DougTataryn If an extrovert hasn't individuated, then they make things exhausting for *others*. Source: years of feedback I've gotten 😆

@DougTataryn Maybe others have already said this: I think what you mean (or what you meant to mean) is not that the monitoring is exhausting - that's natural, & vital for highQ convo. What's exhausting is monitoring for cues while repressing panic that you might be doing something wrong.

@DougTataryn I think bromantane probably works by inhibiting this panic, which is of course incredibly liberating but makes you into a jerk if you don't learn other generators for caring for others' experience. Which can also happen via integrating the panic.

@dreams_ofsushi @AskYatharth For captain's log in roam, I have an autokey autocompletion thing that when I type a few letters enters "#capslog @ 13:05" then presses enter and tab. And I just do it in daily notes. Works pretty well, though I hate how daily notes are upside down with the most recent at top.

@Malcolm_Ocean @RoamResearch Agreed - think it could be due to performance slow down due to new users? Not a huge programmer but those milliseconds could be the time it takes to search for an existing page with those letters before returning a result?

@ryanaperera @RoamResearch To be clear, the correct behavior (imo) is not adding it at all. And no, it can't be that. If you watch, the existing page results show up near-instantly (they're in browser memory) and the NEW page a few seconds later. Tho could be shown instantly since same as typed text 🤦‍♀️

@aleksil79 @nosilverv Wow I was kinda vaguely hoping someone would do this. I love twitter.

Cool. I've been wanting to read more about Girard. Initial conclusion from reading this is that an important leverage point for creating antirivalrous GameB cultures must be learning to interpret others' behaviors as trying to create upward spiral, while not being naive.

Some pretty interesting cross implications between what @aleksil79 wrote there & Perceptual Control Theory. Both agree it's hard to infer others' internal states from behavior. PCT says that everyone is fundamentally controlling perceptions, not world. That frame might help.

@Thinkwert So long as I could have people visit and hang out with me, probably quite a while. IDK if I could lay down the entire time though - I'd want to hang upside down off the back, practice headstands on it, etc.

@KHPavle @Thinkwert Yeah pretty much with you here. If I couldn't have visits or whatever, I'd spend maybe a few months reading and writing and meditating and other stuff, and then go from there.

@KHPavle @Thinkwert Oh -- can I use the money while I'm there? Could do some really interesting tiny investments in people wanting to start companies or something. That could be a whole fascinating lifestyle.

@KHPavle @Thinkwert Another interesting variation on this, which seems different than what @Thinkwert has proposed, is that you have to pick the number of days in advance and you can't leave sooner nor later. Then would have to hedge against odds of events that would make you want to leave.

Do you read speculative/science fiction? If so, do you think any of it in particular has influenced your perceptions of Neuralink-type technologies? I'm curious what media out there specifically has had / will have an influence on perceptions/uptake of this sort of tech

@lisatomic5 Hmm hadn't thought about this but probably @ramez's Nexus has influenced this for me. Nanobots that allow everything from mental programming etc to collective consciousness. Lots of beauty and fuckuppery.
