thinking a lot about theology lately - what the fuck is meant by "God"? managed to find 6+ dimensions along which people seem to be talking past each other had claude make a giant chart of these... didn't really help. I'm angry about this whole thing

2 likes 0 RTs

meanwhile turns out my relatives periodically saying "god is love" are literally quoting the teaching that the united church of canada came up with years ago as a way to accommodate the obvious reality that many people were strained on more personal views of god

2 likes 0 RTs

my uncle, who's 2+ decades in with late-stage parkinson's, said "god is hell" love too, but if you just say "love" you're hiding, he says. he sees the charnel ground + pure land thing

that uncle and I were really close when I was younger. it's been hard watching his body stiffen & close from the parkinson's, but his heart is softer and opener than ever, and there's something beautiful about that.

anyway, when I manage to zoom out from the hour-to-hour chaos and look at this as an arc, I'm not worried about who I am & who I'll be in relation to all of this. I trust my transformation process, my ability to adapt... my ability to find out what integrity means for ME, here.

I bet the sense of "wholesome worthwhile challenge" underlies the classic refrain "parenting is the most meaningful thing I've done" tbh I've had things more meaningful per hour but they're harder to focus on; this one is relentless so it drowns out the others in volume

I'm still somewhat surprised by the extent to which I don't feel like I've become that much of a nerd about parenting (yet?). like I read blog posts and books a bit but not a ton. staring much more at theology & AI. would take recs for sure! what writing has most inspired you?

@Malcolm_Ocean 1) because every possible thing / universe exists, equally trivial to nothing existing 2) because it's just param sweeping, this is one of all the possible configurations 3) you decide good, and it gets modulated by what persists, and that leads to pro-social behavior & coherence

@exgenesis so I had a long debate with someone about #1 (in the form of mathematical universe theory) and I think it's wrong and caused by an inappropriate projection of physical object permanence onto mental objects; they share some properties but mental objects are not "out there"

@Malcolm_Ocean 1) this is a maximally decontextualized hypothetical, and hypotheticals need context to be answerable

@aphercotropist do you have a similar such question in you? or are there versions of the context that you can fill in? thinkers who are fairly respected (eg David Bentley Hart) have argued extensively that there's something profound to be found in attending to this question. I wanna know what

okay time for an experiment. if you can see this, hit "copy link" on this tweet you're reading right now, and like it, and we'll see if that gets it an absurd amount of reach despite zero RTs/QTs/replies

Looked into this a bit, because whenever someone does the “cancel culture political correctness ruined it” tour they refuse to be specific about wtf actually happened TLDR the men’s group has initiation rites that overlap with/were taken from Lakota practices. In 1995 and 2021

people love to pretend that “it’s not my job to educate you” was just a copout & never pushback on the expectation that the responsibility for stopping bigoted behavior falls entirely on marginalized people w no responsibility for self-education

quoting @simplagoon: Personally, as someone who was deployed to the Woke 1 wars in 2014, i take full responsibility for what it ended up looking like a decade later. "It's not my job to educate you" was actually the most insane, detrimental and endlessly parroted line of that early Woke 1 era

@MarxistHeathen oh huh, nobody had explained that to me before I didn't think it was a copout exactly but it did feel like a conversation-stopper

vaguely imagining a libertarian social services program that's something like "once every decade you get an X dollar payout, no questions asked" (tho at the expense of your credit score maybe?) minor ergodicity fix is good for everyone

my conclusion is that this was not particularly popular; I would have expected more than 6.5k views from another tweet with 200 likes however, the algo doesn't share it based on # of copies, but on EXPECTED # of copies... which this tweet was probably low at

lots of great (and quite different) answers to this question below. I resonate with many of them

Guy @nosilverv ·

People around me really don’t like AI(-assisted) writing. But they like AI(-assisted) drawing! What's up with that? Do we just like AI in the domains we’re least familiar with, as creators? (Most people around me are writers…) Like, many top Substack publications are AI!

as a kid, I had no TV, and learned that people said "omg you NEED to watch [show/film]!" in MANY cases when it was false."...but after all this wolf-crying, I watched The Godfather and it's super relevant like once a month. have you had a movie like that?
