@visakanv @m_ashcroft wow, that would have been right about as I was graduating high school I have no memory of such a song though, interestingly, and there are few I've forgotten. but it sounds like a sort of contrived rather than inspired one
@visakanv @m_ashcroft Oh, same year though, I wrote a Meta Song:

@MasterTimBlais @__justplaying I think I was half-aware of that when I wrote it. Like there's a reason that I posted it as a thread rather than just leaving it in the messenger chat where we were originally talking!
@m_ashcroft Mmm yeah, this is part of what's going on with my trust-dancing & frame-dialogue stuff too. The difference between an assertion "you are X" and "I can't confidently say you're not X" is HUGE.
@Prigoose @CurziRose I'm mostly not taking new ongoing clients, yeah, though I'm down to do some one-off sessions with people if they're interested in exploring the Internal Trust-Dancing process I've been developing. @jonathandubin Ohhhhhhhhh true. Yeah it was this:
@utotranslucence Oh shit there's now a new contender for "most meta thing I've ever done" although it's arguably about the same amount of meta as the jamming-honing 2×2. It's these 4 tweets:
The 🟪🟧 graphic maybe kinda does a bad job of explaining jamming & honing. The actual relevant question is simply "[on a given scale] is there some particular meaning that one of us is attempting to get understood? if so, we're honing on that; otherwise, we're jamming"
@jonathandubin tho
@metaLulie @m_ashcroft @TCSphilosophy Oooh, exciting! I was just on @tasshinfogleman's podcast this morning. Looking forward to hearing y'all jam ❤️🔥🤸♀️🤩
@AskYatharth what book is this!? 😮
Revisiting the original post, it seems that while the initial examples are very clear, the later discussion results in me confusing these concepts for something closer to explore/exploit in ways that I can see led to creating the misleading diagrams.
eg with this excerpt👇—too much jamming isn't about whether the ideas are getting critiqued or improved. Too much jamming is about people just saying shit that sounds good and not actually paying attention to ensuring that anybody has actually been understood by each other.

Similarly, the main failure modes of honing aren't necessarily about "critique" per se, but about a lack of space for adjacent ideas to get considered, or simply that a conversation is exclusively honing on one person's ideas without ever trying to get the other's meanings meant.
@DanielCJonas sure

🧵 thread for new pronoun proposals that aren't about one's whole-self identity but about clarifying part-whole relations #neologisms
relatedly, fractional pronouns! (my original phrasing of "zeroth" was mistaken; this could be 1st person, or 2nd, or 3rd) plural : singular :: singular : fractional
this thread (scroll up and down) features some conversation about the difference between we-the-whole and we-the-individuals "we're dating, but uhhh... not each other"
(that same thread also features a foray into my youngest take on pronouns being bad)
Also just gonna say I added "y'all" to my lexicon a couple years ago and that was a great decision and I would encourage more people to do it. It's pretty boring but it's a good first experiment in intentional pronoun refactoring for increased referential clarity.

@ponekarl will acknowledge that he's got a whole model around "self-control & self-regulation", plus the bit about getting kids to eat stuff they don't want to eat, that's evidence that he has a pretty mainstream/coercive view of parenting and selfing

Thread · Tracing the barn-raising idea back through DMs and goal data
I was suddenly struck today by how this idea was in some sense incubating in the back of my mind since last fall when I first wrote about the self-energizing meta-team meta-vision like "but what was I doing that catalyzed the clarity here?" the answer: DMing w @nibrasibn
which was downstream of this reply...
to @utotranslucence asking "What is your plan?"
Which means I think I've just converted one of my middle dominos from a "???" to a specific!
@CompliceGoals helped me track this down. I looked at my data for my meta-team goal on the day I tweeted the original barn-raising tweet, and saw "more messages w Nibras" and was like "RIGHT!"

The barn-raising tweet literally started as a DM. I wrote to Nibras: > in my ideal world, once a month I'm helping run a hackathon for someone who has an app/business idea and a—welp, apparently I decided this thought wanted to be a tweet:
It feels important to track this sort of thing down, because otherwise I could forget that there was a causal chain at all to this great idea. But clearly I wouldn't have had it if I hadn't been being active on twitter, both in tweets and DMs!
So yeah, if you want to trace my thinking on this back even further, you can check out the self-energizing meta-team meta-vision thread:
@made_in_cosmos I've considered exploring this (I definitely have some ADHDesque properties and could certainly get a diagnosis without much squirrelling) but haven't gotten very far.
@Austen so many assumptions people really don't appreciate how many assumptions there are
Important thing to know about this study: it's from 2011, well before "ivermectin bad" needed justifying by covid consensus machine. Someone else shared it as "a new study" and that would be WAY less trustworthy. Article doesn't mention date either 🤦♀️ wfla.com/community/heal…
Important caveat is that this was after 11mo of treatment at 150ug/kg per day IVM. So decent odds acute treatment of covid infection with five days of 300ug/kg per day would be safe, but I know a few smart people taking IVM prophylactically and uhhhh I'm gonna be forwarding this.

@mmasnick @KendraSerra I'm so impressed by the extent to which you managed to describe Complice without having seen it. Most people don't even get it that well *after* they've seen it. Mad props.
@mmasnick @triketora @KendraSerra @CompliceGoals "changing my views on managing tasks" yeah, most other systems have dead metaphors and aren't seriously thinking about what it *means* to have things you want to do people have learned a bunch just from trying Complice, let alone using it long-term
@pomeranian99 @dimatosj @triketora this is baller, Clive. @joyurge and I were talking of starting a podcast where we interview people about {death and productivity} because obviously finitude is profoundly related to what it means to do things, or to prioritize but it doesn't get talked about much!

@pomeranian99 @dimatosj @triketora @joyurge I also intentionally put death front and center on the Complice homepage (the line in Mary Oliver's poem *before* these ones is "Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?" but I left that implicit so as not to come on quite so strong)
@acesounderglass @KenBearIsland @yashkaf yeah fair and this guy doesn't seem like the sort of person to say "the woman is always right" or "my wife definitely knows better than me" 😅
@pomeranian99 @dimatosj @triketora @joyurge Tbh Clive you might like Complice! It's an app with similar constraints as paper—you re-enter your tasks each day, and not-dones don't automatically roll-over day-to-day.

@pomeranian99 @dimatosj @triketora @joyurge It does have a system for grabbing yesterday's notdones for today, but they're left to the past if ignored for a few days. And if you don't do something 3× in a row...
@MasterTimBlais somehow what comes to mind is "you've kissed a guy ever" thinking mind is second-guessing this but I'm just gonna hit that button before I can stop myself
@dthorson @DougTataryn @meditationstuff I may be very confused, ofc. I'm very far from these sorts of ends, though I have a vantage point from which there's some obviousness that what I'm doing will work, albeit with many unknowns. Might die first ofc.
@QiaochuYuan this is not quite true but it has a grain of truth that is mostly unstated elsewhere, so... keep up the good work. I think the missing piece is ~ the value of the smile is itself multiplied by some other factor of partner-quality, which includes sex appeal, wit, & <everything>.

@jambarree @utotranslucence @tristanharris ahh terrible syntactic ambiguity. lojban when I meant adaptive defenses in the attention arms race, for the people [as opposed to the corporations] not adaptive defenses, for the people in the attention arms race [as opposed to people who aren't]

@irishdrug1511 Yeah! I wrote a thread about the design of it here (if you or others are curious)
Thread · Designing a site for on-demand design rants
boom, purchased whatifitweregoodtho.com 💥 for my design rants but currently... it's bad! it's just a parked domain. so... what if whatifitweregoodtho.com were good tho?
my first idea is that if you type any url, eg whatifitweregoodtho.com/xyz, then it would perform some sort of search for "xyz" and if it found something, it would redirect you to that and if it didn't, it would prompt a tweet: "Hey @Malcolm_Ocean, what if xyz were good tho?"
and I could alias a bunch of things to the same thing, eg "spotify" and "ytmusic" and "tidal" and "deezer" and "musicstreaming" and many others could all point at this thread:
an example of the prompt→thread workflow in action

I'm happy to do a design rant on almost anything, though not necessarily for longer than the duration of a single song. (You can propose a song if you want, though no guarantees I'll use it. Certain ("swagger") moods better for thinking outside the box.)
So! This overarching design of the whatifitweregoodtho.com website means that basically you can always get an assumption-busting redesign of anything either • one that already exists • one I come up with in response to your query.
And I guess in rare cases I would simply have it redirect to an actual product that I consider good enough to be the answer to "what if X were good tho?" whatifitweregoodtho.com/todolist → Complice 🤑 It'd be sincere! Maybe should redirect to complice.co/philosophy, not homepage.
Okay, I have a design for whatifitweregoodtho.com, but... it still needs building! I think I could do this manually with WordPress but it'd get unwieldy to maintain. Probably wouldn't take long to hack together a simple NodeJS website I could keep updated very easily tho.
But while part of me is tempted to just dive in and do that right away, I know from experience that "wouldn't take long" when it comes to software development is often overlooking a lot of abstractions.
OH WAIT. Maybe @davidfactorial could build this for/with me as one of his 100 tools! twitter.com/davidfactorial…
Although… part of me is asking if this current idea is anything other than a url shortener 🤦♀️ So I shall @AskYatharth: what do you use for yatharth.link? surely some simple service exists for that. Ultimately probably would be good to be able to customize things tho.

At one point I was like "maybe this thing is just a company?" but there's a necessary type of liberatedness—of thought, or perception even—that isn't possible within traditional (or modern/postmodern) companies, for structural reasons.

The number keeps going up, non-monotonically (as of this writing I'm at 4926) but its rise no longer gives me a feeling of excitement, more just bemusement and gladness that it isn't growing faster.
Probably some of this is downstream of having heard people talk about challenges of having more followers, such that I imagined making a tool that would stem the tide.

@nowtheo I think that it's mostly a way that people justify something that's better for them as being better for someone else, and it would be better for everybody if they just owned that. Relates to self-other boundary problems
@nowtheo tough love can also map onto the kind of bs where schools tell you they're made for your learning, as opposed to acknowledging that a lot of how things are are for the teacher's benefit or something else
@acidshill @visakanv relatedly, I hate commuting, by which I don't mean "driving to work every day", I mean "going anywhere then going straight back" going for a walk = great going to place A, then place B, then back = great single roundtrip = ugh it's a really strong response, not sure why
@chaosprime @palecur Assuming by "gestural typing" you mean eg swiping, I disagree. You have to express the word you intend, *before* any algorithm runs. So you're generating it rather than recognizing or receiving it. It's in that sense not much worse than spellcheck.
@chaosprime @palecur Although spellcheck is kinda bad too, and I guess gestural-typing is categorically worse because it will completely prevent you from typing a word it doesn't recognize, not just highlight it after the fact. But still nowhere near full on markov chain.

Thread · Announcing the first virtual barn-raising
Announcing the first virtual barn-raising! Want to help get a business off the ground? 🚀 October 9th all day (9am-midnight pacific) Featuring a bookings platform by @Prigoose & @__drewface. I'm excited to have them be the first barn-raising, for a few reasons shared below 👇🧵
Reason 1: main difference between barn-raisings & hackathons is that usually nothing ongoing happens after a hackathon. Sometimes a project gets legs anyway, but it's not the default. But Priya & Andrew have been working on this for months, and they're not about to quit!
Reason 2: They're exactly at one kind of get-over-the-launch-hurdle stage where a barn-raising is pivotal. Too early = not enough surface area for people to plug in = won't get anywhere satisfying in a day Too late = too much complexity to bring people up to speed
Specifically, the stage they're at is that they've got 2 beta customers, and they've got a prototype version of their product that one of the beta customers is using in a production application. Good signs of viability.
Reason 3: I feel this will do something really good for the momentum of the barn-raisings as well. We'll definitely do barn-raisings for projects less far along or smaller, but it feels important to make it clear that these one day events are for realizing something long-term.
Reason 4 that I'm stoked to have them go first is that there's a ton of different stuff to do: • clever sales & marketing strategy • redesign logo, website elements, name • open-sourcing some of their work • & more!
Reason 5: Their product is a platform/API, so we can also have people hacking *using* the platform, in parallel! What Stripe is for payments, they're that for bookings. Got an idea of something you wanna make bookable? Help by working on your own thing!
Reason 6—which wasn't in the first draft of this thread—is that they've been really engaged & creative around designing how the barn-raisings will work! So I'm feeling like this 👇 is already coming true a bit 🥰
On which note, there's tons of meta-work to do—the first barn-raisings will also involve working on the format itself. So if you want to help build, iterate, or document systems for self-energizing teamwork, that could be another great reason to come!
So what now? Here's a sign-up form for the Oct 9 event with @__drewface & @Prigoose! It just takes a minute! (go ahead & fill it out even if you're busy that day but want to stay in the loop—you can mark that on the form) ajroberts0417.typeform.com/to/xyEW680E

@WatsonLadd the existence of Quebec honestly is probably part of it as well—we have more language-difference-border inside the country than we do at its outer reaches
@marcio_lopes Oh true! Yeah, that would be the main other place like this, ofc. And I guess Arabia. And then Africa has a whole different kind of arbitrary nation-state borders that ignored local languages.
@luispedrocoelho Hmmmmmmmm I think you are mostly incorrect although I'm sure that it helped solidify & reify it. Language diffs predate westphalian sovereignity. To the extent the causal arrow does point the other way, I'd guess it's not about "legal" borders so much as limits of empire reach.
@tasshinfogleman I scrolled through a lot of these before discerning that you're being very context-aware in assigning them, and thus deciding that I would accept. (btw, have not forgotten that I promised you in 2018 I'd make a WardleyMap of Upstart & have not done so 😅…hope this goes better)
@luispedrocoelho Ahh yeah totally. The fuzzy linguistic borders still seem like a way less arbitrary thing to base a nation-state border on than uhhh the 49th parallel. That's all I'm saying.

@luispedrocoelho The eastern side I guess is a bit more reasonable, divided by the lakes and by french and by which colonies stayed loyal to the british king at the time of the revolution.

Updating one's OKCupid Q answers is actually one of the best ways to find out which opinions of your have changed. Aside from all of the noise, and the other issues. But I suspect there isn't an alternative that's better and widely used. (—me 2015; still no better tool exists)
Thread · Inner conflict in a letter to a child one chooses not to have
I've decided to respond to this, because it seems to express confusions I've myself had, and illuminates something about the nature of inner conflict. (This thread written assuming someone has read the post, though you're welcome to read my framing first) zenrants.substack.com/p/dear-son
I want to start by saying that I have tremendous respect for the author, @AlfieriJamie, for the courage to share such intimate thinking with the world ❤️🔥 Seriously. Revealing oneself in process and in detail helps others find clarity, whether in resonance or in dissonance 💞
Like the author, and like @dthorson who shared this post, I've also struggled with making sense of where having a kid fits in with uhhh the urgent global everything situation. For me it was "I don't want a distraction from xrisk" plus roughly this:😅
And I respect whatever decisions people decide to make on this front. There are no right answers here. Yet... something about the vibe/tone in this piece creates a response in my body of disturbance & disgust. The piece reads... like a dark ritual, sacrificing something vital.
I first wrote in my notes when I read it: > It feels like an act of violence to speak to this son he's choosing to not instantiate > (says some part of my gut) I'd now clarify: "to speak 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘢𝘺 to this son he's asserting that he won't instantiate".
In the language below, of "ritually sacrificing the child", it feels to my body that the child is... not laid to rest, but still suffering on the altar of this man's indecision and turmoil.
There's a place for heroic sacrifice, but it has a totally different energy. True resolve comes from conflict being *resolved*. This piece of writing looks to me like someone trying desperately to convince himself.
He speaks with a conviction that doesn't match his own self-recognition as a "deluded fool". He's trying to convince himself; in so doing, he's cutting himself off from what else he knows.
If the kid were laid to rest, he'd feel peace and clarity and determination to save the world on service of everyone else's children, or something. He might have even written to such a child instead—a real child, not born of him but the living recipient of his fatherly energy 👑
Maybe not—who am I to say? Sometimes one writes letters that one never sends, in order to let go, and that was clearly the attempt here. But those are usually about the past, when someone has died or a relationship has ended. Not about a decision that could still be re-made.
Some of what I'm saying here is specific to this one author, but I have some sense that this attitude is supported by the "cult" he feels he must join. Partially just priors. Partially because when I was at a BioEmotive retreat at MAPLE in 2019, most residents seemed desperate.
But *particularly* my sense here is because of a specific story about MAPLE's founder that suggests that > the principle at its root is “disregard what you want in favor of what Must Be Done” (source: facebook.com/caroline.f.hub…)

This suggests that for all of its beauty—and there is deep beauty to what MAPLE is doing—there's a basic organizing principle that is going to keep people compartmentalized and make it hard for them to actually maturely & sanely engage with the meaning crisis & xrisks.
I don't know what the answer is, but I'd feel a lot more optimistic about the organization if it found a way to transform & untangle that organizing principle. Perhaps some way that Soryu could go be a mendicant and someone else could step in who more integratedly wants the job.
On the original content level: "if you think conscientious people shouldn't have children, you're saying the world should be inherited by unconscientious people (memetically and/or genetically)" It's an obviously self-defeating strategy under how evolution actually works.
Can raising children be in service to solving xrisk/meaning/enlightenment? I think for some people, it's going to have to be. We can't build a eutopia out of dissociated sacrifice. Others may integratedly discern that in this lifetime they don't want kids, on balance. Legit.
I personally don't think that Alf, who wrote this letter, has achieved that level of integrated clarity, but that doesn't mean I can confidently predict what the resolution ultimately should be. I just don't want him or others to confuse his present declaration with integration.
I wish him & others the best of luck at finding clarity on how to organize their one wild and precious life in the face of enormous pressures in conflicting directions. It's rarely easy but as far as I can tell it's always in some sense possible and nearly always worth it.
If you want to read more of my thinking about common confusions regarding "committing" as a strategy, check out this 🧵👇 Feel free to ask Qs or share experiences that seem to contradict what I'm saying! That's how we deepen collective understanding 👁️👁️

@patcon_ not gonna take any lead on it but I want to support you so lmk how I can help! I was recently in touch with the Canadian coordinator for simpol.org too
@WilliamAEden looollll but nah it's more of a Cascadia thing I'd never lived within a <1day driving distance of friends but with a border in between, prior to moving to BC, so I think it's prompting some realizations
@WilliamAEden although it always struck me as weird that the federal border, with completely different attitudes and priorities to the bay area, gets to decide whether I can visit the bay
@aspiringpeasant @_holyweather Hmm… yeah, broadly looks like Cascadia region is gonna do okay (definitely compared to SE) except for aspects of fires & I guess a bit of coastline sea-level issues. Broadly things look pretty good for Canada except for the part where US citizens have more guns than our mil 😅
@dthorson Hmmm... I don't think it's demonic. And the story about Soryu is just one particularly vivid piece of all the data I've had. The desperation I've seen firsthand among MAPLE residents (and iirc heard on Emerge you speak of in yourself) is a separate source of data that resonates.
@dthorson I would love to read your twenty tweets, and would support you in inviting them forth if I can. As you said, this is nuanced territory and I wouldn't expect you to be able to adequately respond in just a few minutes.
@dthorson I would like to be on the same page with you about these important Qs! Both because I respect your thinking a lot on a person-to-person level and because I care about how MAPLE is going about its navigation, in service of everything we all care about.

@dthorson I guess I'll add that what I'm saying here is broadly not firm conclusions but provisional impressions. I may have over-represented my confidence; I was attempting to speak in a way that would map to my uncertainty. Some of this does seem obvious from my vantage point though.
@dthorson And yeah, reviewing my tweets: > creates a response in my body > says some part of my gut > looks to me like > Maybe not—who am I to say? > I have some sense that > story [...] that suggests that > I personally don't think that > as far as I can tell ...I feel pretty measured.
@tasshinfogleman that seems well worth doing! and definitely matches this sense of criterion
@tasshinfogleman we'll see if, with this having been drawn to my attention, it ends up feeling like this! and maybe we can playfully orient to how to make it feel more like this
part of why we need double negatives in speech is to represent modus tollens "he said some things that he couldn't have said if he didn't understand how this sort of thing works"
(I guess you could say "could only have said if he did", but it doesn't seem to make the point as clearly, at least in some cases)

@selentelechia @meditationstuff @eigenrobot I was taught the alphabet by my older sister before I learned it in school, and I've got great proprioception but it's taken me a bunch to get back interroception
@leashless @utotranslucence @dthorson @MonasticAcademy valuing you weighing in gotta solicit @meditationstuff's take on this, since it seems sufficiently contrary that I'm regularly questioning if yall even have the same referent for where the path goes
@Mike_Drop415 Ahh, good question. I hadn't really thought about it, but I think I'm sort of pointing at "what would happen if everyone who was conscientious agreed with you?" and while a single parent is a small factor compared to global memeplexes, if *all* conscientious people had no kids...
@Mike_Drop415 (and insofar as what I'm calling conscientiousness comes from memes, which is surely somewhat) then their memes would have to be pretty damn impressively good at attracting folks from different backgrounds, or they'd be gone in a generation.
@Mike_Drop415 of course, there are small-scale versions of this, of which monasticism is the prototypical example! historically, monks would be celibate (this isn't true of MAPLE monks, though people don't have sex *at* the monastery) and get new members via memes (and orphans, in some cases)

Yo @EnsoRings. Fix the quality control of your molds. On the left—a ring from 2018, which unfortunately broke. On the right, *allegedly* same product from now. See the ridges? I contacted support and they sent me another one still with ridges. Fix your molds. No excuses.

@EnsoRings left side: 😊 right side:👿
@EnsoRings Frankly I don't buy it. 1. "clean, finished look"? The ridge has a ton of tiny imperfections that look like stretch marks. Hard to capture them even with my macro lens but they feel like a mistake, whereas the old one was consistent. Can kinda below how new one catches light

@EnsoRings Reason 2 I don't buy it.... is the 3D render on the site still doesn't have those ridges. It shows a nice clean curve with a little bevel/chamfer—the opposite of a ridge.

@EnsoRings Personally I think you'd see sales go down if you added the ridges to the 3D render, which is exactly my point—it's a worse product (even if there *weren't* the extra imperfections along the ridge).

@hyponymous oooh, I tried reading Steps to an Ecology of Mind and found it really tough to wrap my head around. the best exposure I've had to G Bateson's work was through Fritjof Capra's Uncommon Wisdom, which has a chapter about GB.

@davidfactorial this is so relevant to why I think the meta-team is gonna be more awesome than we can easily anticipate... people are hard to work with in various ways and we can get better and we can develop meta-trust in that learning process (cc @tasshinfogleman & @this_is_silvia)
> “Generalized trust” or “meta-trust” is “trust that whatever issues might arise between us, we can talk about things in a way that is workable for both of us and leads to issues getting resolved to our mutual satisfaction in good time.” malcolmocean.com/2021/09/non-na…

@davidfactorial @tasshinfogleman @this_is_silvia I talk about what I mean by "meta-trust" in the post I just published last night: malcolmocean.com/2021/09/non-na…

@davidfactorial @tasshinfogleman @this_is_silvia we can also get more object-level trust that we in fact have the skill to ask for changes in ways that are spacious rather than judgmental, and that we can hear others' requests without taking it personally (to the extent that those are true! which is part of the whole process)
@davidfactorial @tasshinfogleman @this_is_silvia and to the extent that we have a large cluster of feral free agents who have this trust in each other, we can do things that random strangers can't do which forms the basis of the meta-company I've been envisioning, and ultimately a new economy (cc @m_ashcroft & @visakanv)
worthwhile distinction to make, re eg scheduling calls: 🕐📆 clock/calendar availability: there is nothing on my schedule at that time 😀😴 energetic availability: given everything else going on that day, I expect to be in a good headspace for this at that time ht @Morphenius
@_koshjelly I think you could have secure attachment but not have the communication skills or shared worldviews to actually solve a particular problem, but broadly yeah there's a lot of connection here. I think you could also have this trust w someone you don't have an attachment rship with
