@Malcolm_Ocean @natural_hazard "Punishment is goodhart waiting to happen" is also really good. Consider the asymmetry of a person goodharting on the correlates of good things: but then the reward doesn't come. In contrast goodharting on punishment, punishment doesn't come: Confirmation bias!!!!!!

@RomeoStevens76 @natural_hazard yup! and if you're goodharting on someone else rewarding you, there's still a fundamental separation between the actual good things and your ability to *fake* the good things I've now written this up: malcolmocean.com/2022/02/toward…

thinking about this vis-a-vis "neutrality" insofar as swiss banking is supporting russia's capacity to invade, perhaps (in some sense) to *not* sanction russia would be to "take the side of the oppressor" would it be a stretch to say "staying neutral requires the sanctions"?

Replying to Edward Saperia @edsaperia ·

@Malcolm_Ocean Corollary: much easier to find consensus for awayness than towards ess. That’s why we have rights-based societies.

@edsaperia that's a good point I was looking at this the other day people have argued that: positive rights produce obligations, which can then negate negative rights

0 likes 0 RTs

@edsaperia part of why it's easier to get consensus on awayness is that it's much easier to articulate a problem than it is to have a workable solution (*especially* a workable solution that doesn't piss anyone else off)

@Malcolm_Ocean It‘s a stretch, yes even though it‘s clear to me who the aggressor here is, the definition of staying neutral is staying out of the conflict. staying out oftentimes means not punishing what most agree is an injustice. so yeah, 🇨🇭 broke with centuries of doctrine and that‘s big

@augustiner_h yeah legit, that makes sense and matches my sense of things I put out what I did as my best attempt at making it fit, but it's clearly surprising to everyone and therefore clearly a break from the past simply on those grounds

I admit this part is unfortunate, though I personally think it’s worth it

quoting @mhartl: “Solar noon” is an objective fact of reality (the time of day when the sun has reached its zenith). Having “solar noon” and “noon” permanently out of sync by around an hour is just bizarre. If people want “more daylight”, far better to shift the workday than to argue with Nature.

@diviacaroline Yeah, and this is already compromised by having timezones in the first place, the east and west edges of which have substantial distortion from solar noon.

@BenRatkey interface with the musician: umm... sometimes while sitting in a conversation I like tensing my muscles in my butt & legs to rhythms... could get a simple device (maybe even simpler than EMG!) to convert that into a percussion controller ideally could go on top of pants

@BenRatkey how it makes sounds: this one has honestly been explored quite exhaustively, and everything is a remix I think someone could make a single device that would let people ape @AndrewHuang & sample enviro sounds and instantly turn them into a tone for a midi keyboard (or butt-EMG!)

Thread · Why trust doesn't converge and honoring your own distrust

I'll once again remind people that you can't trust who/what you can't trust I'll also note that it's generally stressful for people to realize that they have differences in their sense of trust—people want it to converge and there's really no reason to expect it to

30 likes 1 RT

in fact, there's reason to expect people's trust *not* to converge in practice: people are different around different people, and some people have psych defenses or vulnerabilities that others don't have

10 likes 0 RTs

you may have some sense of a group of people as trustworthy, and that might be broadly accurate (for a typical member or for most situations) but that doesn't remotely mean you shouldn't listen to yourself if a voice in you says "uhh... this feels off"

9 likes 0 RTs

self-trust is built by honoring one's distrust just because something feels off to you doesn't mean it's inherently bad it might be a false-positive reminder of some other bad situation that you in particular had (someone smells or looks like an abusive ex, idk)

9 likes 0 RTs

you don't need to pass judgment in some sort of objective way in order to honor your own distrust and say "there's something that feels off to me about this" (ideally you also act on it, eg take space, and it can also be good to talk with people about it)

7 likes 0 RTs

now, sometimes things add up and people do need to collectively decide to enforce some sort of boundary but you can't rely on group membership to keep you safe; you need to listen to yourself and inevitably you'll make mistakes and get hurt; this is how we become non-naive

11 likes 0 RTs

here's a beautiful case study of how something being off for one person doesn't mean it's inherently bad

Thread · The marshmallow test as a case study in Moloch and self-trust · 5 of 6 tweets

the marshmallow test is the simplest case study on Moloch—can you not defect against different selves across time? (in the context of "if I don't do it, someone else will, and if they do and I don't, I lose" which is the molochian trap) (—paraphrasing @jgreenhall)

9 likes 0 RTs

but if we screen off The Desire To Pass Tests and look at situations that involve intrinsic structures of delayed gratification or something we might find that the marshmallow test measures something more like "self-trust" than like "will"

1 like 0 RTs

although ofc maybe the actual strategies kids use to succeed at it aren't self-trust-based even though I think that practicing such things would probably cause increased self-trust, at least narrowly, even if the strategy used is distraction

1 like 0 RTs

unless you end up generating opponent processes which mess you up later the advantage of the marshmallow test is that the reward and the cost are in the same units: marshmallow so the only tradeoff is time/selves, not some messier thing that can get out of balance

What are the most unusual ways you've deliberately expanded your comfort zone? One from me to start: in order to expand my comfort zone about incurring social costs, I asked the friends I was talking with to sit in silence for 5 minutes.

@RichardMCNgo I played a game called "Rejection Therapy" a decade ago which had a deck of cards with prompts of things to try doing, with the aim of getting a "no" (if they said yes, you had to try again with someone else) I did one a day

13 likes 0 RTs

@RichardMCNgo cards included: - ask to buy something that's not for sale - ask someone to sit down - ask for a discount buying something - ask someone out on a date - ask a stranger for change from a dollar - offer to pay for someone's order oh they're still for sale! rejectiontherapy.com/game/

Note: the numbers in the image are nonsense placeholders mainly chosen to demonstrate: 1. Inverted-U dose response curves 2. Tail-upside being correlated with tail-downside They should not be treated as valid guesstimates :)

@heybask you should put a "these are made up numbers" in the image itself, maybe even as a watermark overlaying the thing I would honestly suggest deleting it and remaking it to minimize people thinking it's data

@Malcolm_Ocean I've decided the solution is for apps to position all necessary interactiond at the bottom of the screen. Some apps are moving in that direction (firefox can put its address bar down there)

@makoConstruct sure, and (if there's nothing else trying to scroll) I can pull down the notifications bar from over an inch away from the top of the screen but these are layery solutions, compensating for a problem we don't need to have in the first place!

@mattroll_ then there's many little reflections spaced throughout (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly) during which I ask various Qs: - Did what I do today matter? - Are my actions moving the needle in the ways I intend? Any side-effects, wanted or unwanted? - What have I been ignoring?

Feels like most psych stuff (eg ifs focusing etc) ive picked up is about resolving internal conflicts Not much about what to do after

@AbstractFairy whatever you want! if you have no stuck internal conflicts, what to do should be in some sense obvious (even if it's "consider plans for what to do" or "interview people about career paths or important unsolved problems")

@AbstractFairy @CompliceGoals Goal Crafting Workshop is pretty good for this! I guess implicitly a lot of people are doing things and feel stuck (hence internal work) There's a case for "after that what u do becomes clear" but it also is its own work for sure

@altsanabo @AbstractFairy @CompliceGoals haha yeah we've noticed that a lot of people are blocked on being able to do the goal-crafting stuff by internal conflicts on various levels of abstraction (about having goals at all, or about their specific goals/plans) we have some sketches for a workshop on internal conflicts
