Has anyone improved on the SMART goal framework? I want to go a little bit meta on goal setting practice. Has anyone done any innovating here?

@VividVoid_ here's our framework for goals, which is pretty contra SMART this is just saying "what is a goal"; doesn't directly say what makes a goal well-defined

Intend (12/100 threads) @IntendApp ·

Goal = recognizable desired state in the future, that causes you to act differently in the present so as to realize it. If... 🛣️ no recognizable state = "trajectory" 😣 not desired = "should" 👀 not future = "regret" ☁️ no action = "dream" 🤠 actions just for show = "signalling"

7 likes 0 RTs

@VividVoid_ notably absent are several of the items from SMART:

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

This is a very spacious meaning for "goal". It doesn't require:  📅 a due date (usually embarrassingly over-optimistic)  #️⃣ a numerical metric (which is just a proxy for what really matters)  🏁 a state of finality (it has to be in the future, but it can be ongoing)

1 like 0 RTs

@VividVoid_ and then I did another thread about why I don't think due dates, numerical metrics, or states of finality are required, how they can mess you up, and why/how you might want them anyway so directly addressing SMART

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Last December, I broke down the vital ingredients in the goal definition we use at Goal-Crafting Intensive workshops. 🎯 Goal = recognizable desired state in the future, that causes you to act differently in the present so as to realize it. @VividVoid_ as for what makes goals *good*, we use something called CSI Approach, a little-known framework that we got from Nick Winter's book The Motivation Hacker and I think he cites Piers Steel Challenging (not default) Specific Immediate (can start now) Approach-oriented (vs avoid)

@vividvoid Whitmore partly anticipated habit/system focus by saying that there can be end goals as well as performance goals. The latter is what @ScottAdamsSays, @shaneparrish, @JamesClear et al have highlighted well. But goals are needed as @Malcolm_Ocean argued well 2/3

@r_ganesh @VividVoid_ @ScottAdamsSays @ShaneAParrish @JamesClear (here's my take on why you can't do without goals—not just "mustn't" but how it's literally impossible and you're better off not pretending)

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

The term "pre-success failure" from @ScottAdamsSays' book is a gem. His related idea that you should have systems and not have goals is absurd. (have both!) Scott cites Olympic athletes as examples. 🤨 Take 3 guesses what goal an Olympic athlete has... 🥇🥈🥉

@jasonwallerphd @KemtrupTweets If you need to 'process' an emotion, that means it didn't get metabolised somatically & mentally when you initially felt it, so there's probably a resistance, so processing involves noticing & negotiating or dialoguing with the resistance to allow it to safely, coherently pass

@utotranslucence @jasonwallerphd @KemtrupTweets I've sometimes analogized this as "you know when you get interrupted mid-story and then the conversation moves on but you're preoccupied with wanting to finish telling your story? it's like that but for your amygdala"

70. if you're speaking to someone in a different time zone about scheduling something together, it's polite to speak in terms of their time zone instead of yours

@tasshinfogleman most polite maybe, but not best I use an equals sign between both times I also think there are many other heuristics for using only your own timezone (eg if the other is travelling, or they happen to be very familiar with your tz but not vv)

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

btw, here's a simple format for effective unambigous scheduling between different timezones: if you're in PST scheduling with someone in EST, write "how about noon=3pm?" = means both timezones no more "your time, my time" blah. just "the time that's both noon & 3"

this immediately seems kinda dumb but there it is it’s like judging or blaming past me for not being good enough to meet the needs and expectations of me now some of those (like “be fit”) could be been forecast, others less so still, default frame is to judge past me

@m_ashcroft One thing I've learned is it can be helpful to pause at this stage and say "wait, why do I feel the need to judge this perception as dumb?" Sure, it may be framed in a way that seems obviously confused, but every thought makes sense in its own terms!

@RichDecibels That’s in the vein of what I want! Here’s context for how I want to use word “this group has strong X” = the power of the group far exceeds the power of each of its parts individually “this group has no X” = the group greatly inhibits its members, they’d be better off alone

@beigege @deepfates @RichDecibels Deutsch seems to me to be making some hugely unqualified assumptions about minds that negate the orthogonality thesis without addressing it. @Malcolm_Ocean @beigege @RichDecibels Where's his work on memetic evolution?

@deepfates @beigege @RichDecibels it's in The Beginning of Infinity, mostly some of the later chapters. I wish there were a better resource online to link to but I'm not aware of one QC and I discuss the ideas in this thread:

QC @QiaochuYuan ·

@AdeleDeweyLopez i asked @Malcolm_Ocean a version of this question once and he responded with a hypothesis by @DavidDeutschOxf that basically we have ancestral trauma that is good at reproducing itself (in a cycles of abuse kind of way) but not necessarily good for its individual human hosts

3 likes 0 RTs

Replying to Jake Orthwein @JakeOrthwein ·

@Malcolm_Ocean I'm also very unclear on timelines, though i didn't necessarily read the tone as "you should panic" so much as "we should close the gap between what this world looks like and what the world in which we solve this looks like." Agree there's a gap; ~agree it's urgent to close it.

@JakeOrthwein idk how much it's in that post specifically but the overall EY/xrisk memeplex has a strong is geared towards bodily dysregulation equivalent to panic. I've spent years extricating it from my bodymind there's a gap and it's urgent to close it, but also:

If there are outliers that unlikely, your distribution IS NOT NORMAL, full stop. The first sentence is therefore NOT A FACT. You have a fat-tailed distribution, maybe more like a Cauchy distribution or maybe some other function. Grokking Non-Gaussian statistics is table stakes.

Probability Fact @ProbFact ·

Male heights have a normal distribution centered at 5' 10" with a standard deviation of 3 inches. The probability of an 8 foot tall man is on the order of 1 in 1,000,000,000,000,000,000. And yet there are men taller than 8'. The record is 8' 11".

22 likes 0 RTs

in this case, you probably don't actually have a Cauchy distribution, because iirc with a Cauchy distribution the sample mean never converges—positive and negative outliers exist that are SO FAR that when you sample them they yank the whole mean away from center

1 like 0 RTs

likewise with a single tailed fat-tailed power-law distribution, the mean goes to infinity this too is an approximation—you can use these to model earthquakes but in practice an earthquake can't be bigger than the size of the earth but it CAN be bigger than any we've ever seen!

@RyanHaunfelder @emareaf @ProbFact @DataSciFact Also, things don’t ‘have a normal distribution’ you can sometimes when appropriate under certain assumptions approximate with it. This tweet showed a clear violation of a normal assumption (tail risk) then just pushed past it like everything is fine.

It pretty strongly seems to me that toy problems in game theory, decision theory, and (a folk understanding of operant conditioning) are all less likely to have ~cooperative solutions than more complicated real life situations—thoughts? Does this seem right to other people too?

@diviacaroline Absolutely. I've thought about this and I feel like we need an entire new field of omniwin game theory. In many real situations, the best outcome involves finding a completely new option that both parties prefer over the preconceived ones. Not allowed in toy problems!

8 likes 0 RTs

@diviacaroline The answer is *always* "do the win-win thing". The hard part is *finding* the win-win thing, not doing it once you've found it. I think we could design games to help practice this. I've done a tiny bit of thinking on this.

Andrew Rettek @oscredwin ·

@oscredwin @diviacaroline yeah so I think part of the confusion here is that in reality afaict, most people often actually straightforwardly *do* care about each other's values/preferences/needs (more or less depending on their relationship) so me losing a lil and you gaining a ton can be a win for me!

I struggle to cut through the pattern where someone asks me a question and their whole framework and hidden assumptions of the question dont fit, so i dont want to / cant answer, and then they feel hurt and offended

@wholebodyprayer "I want to answer your question, and I'm not sure how to, given how it's framed. Will you work with me to find a better framing?" This is itself a bit of a frame move I guess since it puts some onus on them for ensuring the question is answerable, but I think that's fine/apt.

Am i gonna get cancelled for admitting that I get very confused when “they” is used multiple times in the same couple sentences to refer to both a single individual and a group of people they interacted with? Cuz it took me like 3 reads to parse what was happening there

@the_wilderless I basically don't use singular they for this reason. If someone wants they/them pronouns I restructure my sentences to avoid having to use pronouns at all.

Hot take: there are unconscious agendas that are opposed to the needs of the participants (memetic colonization or shadow dances) and there are unconscious agendas that are sort of paraconscious, beyond any single consciousness's fathoming but deeply wise.

That thing Jung said about how if you don't deal with the unconscious, it will rule you and you'll call it fate - Applies just as much, maybe more, to groups of people If you don't make your agenda clear, your group will be run by unconscious agenda, and you won't even notice

If "here we go with this again" triggers "should we end this?", that's a sign that people are in some sense in too far and/or in denial about what to expect. Promising themselves it'll be different this/next time when they have no ground to expect that.

One common pitfall in trying to create co-consciousness / IFS-Self-for-groups is having a single person (facilitator, leader, whatever) in the role of trying to ensure all ppl are heard. This is isomorphic to one part therapizing another. Self is emergent.

@xuenay yeah, was loosely aware of this in a family there's obviously a sense in which the family's parents play a different kind of role but I would still say the collective Self is in the whole, not in the parent!
