changing twitter pfp and display name as a magical practice

@QiaochuYuan I've felt deeper and more mysterious with this paint-then-filter-mask-on-my-actual-face avi... maybe a little more playful, a bit less assuming strangers would have any reason to trust me since I don't look bland-friendly like my old professionalish one.

Any method makes assumptions about its level of completion. Some say: I am complete & final. Some say: I will be refined in these ways. Some say: I will be refined in any way (oops not like that! - hidden assumption) Some say: I will always be refined in ways I can't yet fathom.

Guy @nosilverv ·

Very often it is PRECISELY your method that fucks you up. You can't THINK your way into self-transcendence and you can't work alone your way into good social relationships. Most methods are not recursive and so can't bootstrap FROM THEMSELVES into better methods. Many such cases.

@QiaochuYuan also "don't know how to play a more fun game" includes "don't know how to SAFELY play a more fun game" even if there's a simple confusion that could be untangled to result in safety, "it hurt itself in its confusion" is a real thing!

constraints in place for my life planning: - no dayjob ever if i can possibly get away with it - enough free time to spend a lot of time with kids - enough financial freedom + free time so kids don’t have to go to public school already quite strong constraints 😬

@QiaochuYuan this is way more doable than most people think current economic & employment systems are fairly efficient in legible terms, and absurdly inefficient in absolute terms you can definitely export enough value to the world to feed your family without dayjob

uncatherio @uncatherio ·

@QiaochuYuan I think you’re saying “neither parent travels to master to work a fixed hourly amount for salary or wages” achievable, yeah - and/but think for it to be feasible for both parents to do, more net exported production needs to be happening, because you import so much

I'm starting to understand why I can't get into fiction. This book I'm reading has taken 2 WHOLE chapters to say that there's a heatwave 42°C and 60% humidity, plus maybe 1 or 2 sentences on the consequences is all you need 🤷 I know the point is immersion but it's too verbose

quoting @neats29: I've never been able get into fiction because anything improbable immediately takes the joy out of it. The need for things to be factual and realistic is too strong for me :( But I'm determined to keep trying, because I'm curious about it AND I want to improve my imagination...

@Neats29 I couldn't stand Tolkien for this reason. His incredibly detailed descriptions of the scenes make for amazing cinematics, where you can take it in all at once, but I ached for plot. Lots of authors I didn't have this experience with. Is there any fiction you *have* gotten into?

What does it mean to "generate value"? Some examples of situations where a small amount of effort has huge results:  🎄 plant a tree  🚣‍♀️ build a boat & now you can get so many places!  😍 introduce two people who fall in love  🕗 write a script that saves hours of boredom

Those examples are designed to be proof that such a thing does happen. Sometimes the effort-to-reward ratio is less extreme. I think @paulg has an essay—ah yes. I don't agree with it all, but this section on craftsmen hits the spot. paulgraham.com/wealth.html

@Levi7hart A related mind-blowing fact is that when someone loses weight by burning net calories, that weight is lost not as 💩 in the🚽, but as CO₂ expired. Literally burning fat in the sense of being the opposite chemical reaction as trees fixing carbon, although no smoke involved.

@QiaochuYuan @fortelabs yeah, "argument for the value of a human life" is a type error it's like an argument that you should enjoy a piece of music or food: if the enjoyment is possible but missing, the thing to do is perhaps create the context for an enjoyable experience. but there's no *convincing*.

@QiaochuYuan @fortelabs even "inherent" feels to me a lil like "inarguable" if someone has got themselves into a tangle where they think only *some* lives have value, again the solution is not argument but *meeting and connecting with* someone. music definitely helps npr.org/2017/08/20/544…

One way that my moral intuitions are slightly askew is that I tend to dislike Incompetent/Good a lot more than I dislike Competent/Evil, and Incompetent/Neutral is literally the worst. I'm not entirely sure this intuition is wrong, but I'd probably not advocate for it either.

@GeniesLoki Maybe something like, in practice values differences can be reconciled; a competent adversary would often rather collaborate than have a costly fight, especially if you're both considering long timescales. Whereas Incompetent/Good might score a bunch of own goals.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

if someone can't trust me in some way, even if I or others *do* trust me in this way then I cannot ask them to trust me more than they can trust me each person has been betrayed in different ways, and their trust must thus be earned in different ways

0 likes 0 RTs

@liminal_warmth I'd incline towards a version of this that's like, neither voting-based nor "speak in front of" based, but like: - each candidate has a 30min circle dialogue with whole company about joining & the mission - then whole company has deep convo before hiring

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

Shall we take this action? Shall we vote on whether to take this action? Shall we vote on whether to vote on whether to take this action? Shall we vote on whether this vote needs 50% or 60% to pass? Shall we vote on what to do if we can't decide whether or not to vote?

@liminal_warmth I know an org that used to have a hiring process where person would do a trial week-ish, then they'd discuss, and they'd get all members to freewrite on paper responses to like 5 Qs: • "if this employee saves our company, why would that be?" • " " " ruins " " " " • etc

3 likes 0 RTs

@liminal_warmth and then they'd discuss each of those questions & answers, reading out the answers *anonymously* so that nobody had to bear the burden of raising a weird concern eg "this person seems 10× more likely to have a psychotic break than most people; still not that likely, but still"

Thread · Microsolidarity, fluid teams, and whether collectives want anything

Great conversation I had with @RichDecibels last week about microsolidarity & fluid teams, asking him more about Enspiral since it seems really similar to some of what I'm envisioning with my ideas of a distributed self-energizing meta-team. youtube.com/watch?v=P3mZEs…

We talk a lot about how to build trust, manage power dynamics, shape membranes, etc. I like their multi-membrane form, with a core of ~30 you can only join if supermajority approves, who each have individual autonomy to invite ppl to join larger ~200.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

15a/ Membranes. Monists go on about how everything is one, which is true in a sense but also have you noticed that some things are inside and some things are outside? The role of skin, or the walls of a house, or a windshield on a car, is it keeps inside in & outside out.

4 likes 0 RTs

One thing I was struck by was him saying that Enspiral neither has agency nor wants anything! So it's neither necessary nor possible to get the whole group to agree on a direction. Instead, you go do a thing and invite people into it.

3 likes 0 RTs

I think this is a huge and necessarily about-face from the image of a corporation as almost being a person, with needs, desires, and agency. At the same time, superorganism metaphors also appeal to me deeply. Maybe teams have agency & wants, but collectives don't? Hmm hmm hmm.

5 likes 0 RTs

Stoked to hear that since @RichDecibels put out his thinking on microsolidarity.cc he's had >30 communities reach out saying "you put a name to what we're doing!" Name also enables mutual recognition, though we don't yet know how these entities will relate to each other.

2 likes 0 RTs

I'm digging the upward spiral of how some of these conversations are moving into the public sphere. When I reached out to @RichDecibels to chat, he said: > Maybe it would be interesting to record and share? I like that QC is pushing this out in the open

@ckmcdona @reasonisfun Lots of fear is internal. Fear of hell (whether fire and brimstone or the hell of social rejection) causes many people to habitually suppress any thoughts or desires that seem at odds with that. It creates the "do this or else" because the why is arbitrary & too big to fathom.

We can't expect therapy from our relationships, we need distant support to project and not be judged.

@joseschmitty @LindsayBramanMA I truly think both. I used to be like "nah, therapists not needed" and I still think that's more true than most people realize, in the limit. But I also now think that in the meantime, people underrate the power of high quality coherence-aware therapy.

Thread · Ontum: a single unit of ontology in perceptual control theory · 8 of 9 tweets

ontum = a unit of ontology Using a PCT lens, each of my perceptual control systems is responsible for perceiving & regulating exactly one ontum, and the set of all such onta in my system *is* my ontology.

27 likes 1 RT

Examples: • individual sense cells have their ontum baked in, eg a cone cell detects certain light wavelengths • one level up there's an ontum of PINK 🌸= {blue, red, no green} • a few levels further is an ontum of PINK as a *concept* with associations to gender or panther

12 likes 0 RTs

Motor examples: • lowest level: an individual muscle cell tensing • 2nd level: the overall position of a finger • 3rd level: the hand in the shape of a G chord on this particular instrument (much higher is the concept of G across 🎸🎹) • 4th level: transition between G & C

7 likes 0 RTs

More examples: • ontum: air with a skunky smell • ontum: "skunk" as a species • ontum: "cannabis sativa" as a species • ontum: "stoned/high" as a state of mind someone could have • ontum: "bloodshot eyes" as a perception • ontum: "how high am I?" • ontum: THC

3 likes 0 RTs

Yet more examples (these are just pointers; diff between ppl) • ontum: money • ontum: my money • ontum: my income • ontum: rich • ontum: "the rich" • ontum: value • ontum: GDP • ontum: the thing GDP is a proxy for • ontum: capitalism • ontum: $GME • ontum: billionaire

4 likes 0 RTs

For a given ontum, you can set the reference level to something else, eg "I should have more money", but it's hard to deliberately create/change/destroy a given ontum, at least at very high and very low levels. In between, not hard to eg find out about a new food you like.

@QiaochuYuan I dislike the "layering vs. unlayering" frame because it perpetuates the idea that all we have to do is remove all our trauma and then we'll respond perfectly to every situation. Even if you get rid of all your hangups with people, communication is still hard, skills are needed.

@mattgoldenberg @QiaochuYuan Ooooh yeah, great point about the metaphor—I'm also resistant (though differently to you) to the image of "clean it all up then you're done". Though @meditationstuff's "layering" frame has done a lot for me, including in my programming work! eg:

11 likes 0 RTs

@mattgoldenberg @QiaochuYuan @meditationstuff I sometimes frame it as "untangling" too. I guess what I might say is something like, no amount of *just* delayering is sufficient, but since most techniques and experiences *add* layers, it is an utterly vital dimension to track and attend to in organizing anything (psych &+).

@DaltonDEmery you can kinda just check! try saying out loud “i want ___” a few times slowly and see how it feels and then say “i should want ___” a few times slowly and see how it feels

@QiaochuYuan @DaltonDEmery QC had a longer version of this a year ago:

QC @QiaochuYuan ·

@FioraAeterna you can try two sentence stem completions: first, say out loud "i should want..." and let the sentence complete itself as many times as you can, notice how your body reacts to each completion. next the same for "i actually want..."

2 likes 0 RTs

@QiaochuYuan @DaltonDEmery part 2 (see also a lil Q&A in the replies)

QC @QiaochuYuan ·

@FioraAeterna if you find something that your body reacts strongly to then repeat it slowly and feel into it and notice what thoughts or feelings or images come up. the prompt may be too general so you can try narrowing by focusing your attention on one area of your life at a time

QC @QiaochuYuan ·

@goblinodds @mattdiamond @FioraAeterna @CyrusSahba that is, at least the way i interpreted what he said (i could look this up if desired), an internal conflict you actually consciously feel conflicted about is never "i want X" vs. "i want Y," it's always "i want X" vs. "i shouldn't want X, i should want Y"

When / why did it become normal to group kids for education, daycare, based on age? The only benefit I can see is economies of scale. Makes teaching/ daycare more efficient. But there has to be costs. Seems exposure to wider range of ages would be better for socialization.

@nateliason Huge costs in terms of other stuff too—the efficiency is only in increased legibility. In practice, many 5yos aren't ready for math that other 5yos are ready for, but will be ready by age 6 or 7. By forcing same cohorts for all skills, some necessarily way behind & ahead.

@Malcolm_Ocean I imagine it's probably normal that the Dream List exercise ends with me writing things like... "I want to know what I'd authentically want outside of forces like approval, chips-on-shoulders, etc." and "I want to better know myself"

@samlearns Those seem great, yeah! You can explore different kinds of wants using an exercise like this (click thru for full thing)

QC @QiaochuYuan ·

@FioraAeterna you can try two sentence stem completions: first, say out loud "i should want..." and let the sentence complete itself as many times as you can, notice how your body reacts to each completion. next the same for "i actually want..."

@samuelbars I had to destroy Onetab because multiple times I hit a hotkey that caused it to close all of my open windows *losing state like unsubmitted forms*. Probably could disable the hotkey but I'm triggered by the mere idea of the extension 😬😂

12 likes 0 RTs

like now you're on the attachment page and there's a bullet tagged #article and then a subbullet of that with the article url so it would be like quick-capture, directly from url an extension of "page exists because you type its name"

Thread · Tasks vs urges as a design distinction for apps

Thinking about a really basic distinction between actions, that seems super relevant to product design. Do the actions in your app feel like: 1. TASKS: things to do, planned in advance 2. URGES: things I'm doing spontaneously Netflix shifted 1→2 with mail→streaming.

11 likes 0 RTs

I asked @BlackForestBoi in a convo right now, to illustrate this point: when someone sees a new highlight has shown up in Memex, does that feel more like: 1. a new homework assignment 🙄 2. a new episode of a favorite TV show? 👀 Huge difference in UX based on that sense.

4 likes 1 RT

The task/urge dichotomy is reified by school & work contexts, where what we're supposed to do is almost ALWAYS in conflict with what we feel drawn to do. But we later bring that dichotomy into contexts where nobody is imposing it. Can learn not to:

To some extent this is entirely a mindset thing—open tabs often function for people as todos, even though at other moments the same app/system might function in a more urge-driven way. Twitter tabs from days ago are implicit todos.

Malcolm Ocean 🏴‍☠️ @Malcolm_Ocean ·

as the tabs come back (currently 15) I can cluster them: 5 quick access to an app/context (eg roam, complice, slack) 1 playing music right now 5 TODO / open loops (eg 'listen to song', 'reply to tweet') 3 probably unneeded old steps (eg search results, QS spreadsheet) 1 this tab

1 like 0 RTs

The particular controls in a given app/system do affect this though. I'm sometimes most on top of twitter DMs because they have the least possible amount of snoozing or anything like that.

@metaphrand_ if you want a whole take on how it was evolutionarily adaptive, check out David Deutsch's book The Beginning of Infinity, which has an evolutionary model for self-coercion as bad for individual but necessary for stable culture: people doing effortful things they don't understand

2 likes 0 RTs

@metaphrand_ he notes this is just one attractor in culture space: a static anti-rational society where change occurs but mostly by accident. the other attractor is stable but dynamic, oriented towards ever-clearer understandings of reality. no self-coercion needed

@utotranslucence @QiaochuYuan moved to Waterloo in 2010 for uni stayed because I met a small group of people doing next level Game B culture-design though left (just after the 10 year mark) due to some interpersonal tensions, wanting to not be in crazy snowy winter, and not wanting to settle there

@QiaochuYuan I don't think I got exposed to Calvin & Hobbes in any depth until I was too old for the connection to feel especially-close-as-a-kid. But I might've if I had.

@Malcolm_Ocean @Aella_Girl Whoa, do you need special hardware for this? Could I do it with a crappy webcam as the sensor?

@catascopic @Aella_Girl you need special hardware (and the whole @dynamicland1 OS/platform) to do it in as few lines of code as they do it but in principle you could probably do it with a webcam might need at least a 60fps webcam as sensor just because framerate 🤷

I blatantly ignored the "without downloading new pics" since I couldn't figure out what it meant. I don't keep track of which of my pics are in the cloud vs not. I think in its original form it might've been for people posting meme images, and the idea is you don't get to search?

@twinfrey @liminal_warmth Yes. Does this help? Humans are hardwired to think/act in [both analogically and otherwise constructed] groups, such as tribes. Right? But "groups" are constructs, not entities with decision-making agency. Right? So something deeper must be happening, in a causative sense.

@MJPiercello @twinfrey @liminal_warmth I'm interested & intrigued by the level of thinking I'm seeing from you here @MJPiercello. Rare to see people actually sorting through the gears of cultural/biological causality around social dynamics. Nice to meet you! You might like this tweet of mine:

Is there a form of theatre where there's a set plot, and all actors play well-defined characters, but in each performance it is up to them to improvise their way through the plot towards the ending?

@xuenay I made maps for imaginary video games as a kid. Actually tried implementing them in Macromedia Flash at one or two points, but never finished. Well, I did make a flash game, but that was just a little platformer, not the sidescroller RTS I'd made all the maps for etc.
